Beauty and Performance ReviewCONTESSE COLETTE DE SAINT-SEINE These days we were reflecting on the influence that women have always had in the field of dog breeding and how crucial this influence has been. Throughout time there have been female figures who, even if they have not been important breeders, have personified the minds of notable breeders. It is fascinating to trace their stories and, when there are, to see their photographs; to note the charisma with which they worked and were able to leave a remarkable legacy over time. The whippet breed has countless female figures. Today we want to begin by recalling one, surely known to most. Madame Colette de Saint Sense, owner of what appears to be the oldest French affix, the Grillemont (taken around 1907 or so) derived from and inspired by the name of her own home, Chateau de Grillemont, purchased in 1850 by her paternal great-grandfather and his family originally from Normandy.Saint Sense, an only child, was born in 1920 as Colette Lecointre, to a couple of hunting enthusiasts and devoted, like their ancestors, to breeding dogs and various animal species. Her mother was Solange de Lancou (born in 1897 and died in 1954) and her father George Lecointre (born in 1888 and died in 1972).Colette, whose parents and grandparents were breeders of horses, goats, chickens, and dogs, grew up immersed in an environment that certainly pushed her in the same direction as her ancestors, her interests, her passions, and life itself, to the point that we connoisseurs of the field remember her as a renowned breeder of greyhounds and whippets, which came much later in her life. The environment surrounding her home was certainly conducive to the art of hunting, and so Colette, of the dogs she bred and their aptitudes, was soon able to appreciate the art of pointing, hunting and retrieving. The first dog that brought her closer to the art of hunting already at the young age of 10 was a Cocker given to her by her parents, partly because in France since 1844 it had been forbidden to hunt hares and rabbits with greyhounds.Among the breeds of greyhounds, the first to enter Colette's life were two greyhounds seen for sale on an ad for about 600 francs, and so in 1930, since such regal and elegant dogs could not be lacking in a chateau, came a female, Erope de l'Irmini猫re (called Eva) born in 1930, and a male Esacos de l'Irmini猫re, who unfortunately died at one year old: the dog, washed to go to the show and left attached in the yard to dry in the sun, caught cold when the sun went down in the yard.Eva's first litter produced Grillemont's first champion, namely Gitane de Grillemont. In 1934, Colette LECOINTRE married her cousin, Count Christian de SAINT-SEINE, and shortly thereafter the first whippet Aladdin entered her life, a breed that amazed her with its energy and suocorage. In the aftermath of World War II, sporting activities began to resume, and although her passion for and involvement with greyhounds (Greyhound and whippet) was not Colette's main activity, certainly the presence of numerous and growing sporting facilities encouraged her participation in competitions as much as her breeding activities. With the whippet she initially probed the show business and then directed her total passion toward sporting lines."I looked where there were faster dogs than in France, in Germany Fullspeed Amazone and in England Andy Thor. They themselves and their offspring fulfilled my aspirations. I judged a little but I enjoyed the races so much more that my dogs, including greyhounds and whippets, won races in fifteen different countries; without them I would never have visited beautiful cities, magnificent places, met so many people of all languages, backgrounds and lifestyles, with one common interest, that of all breeders: CREATING LIFE."She will die on September 18, 2017

Beauty and Performance Review
Referring back to yesterday's post, today we want to share our first interview, which will be in the first issue. Let's talk about whippets, the legacy that breeders like the ones we talked about have left us, and the passion of two young breeders who in a very short time have reached the heights of Europe.
