A couple of months ago my wife and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary. As someone who will produce cards and commemorative images on the flimsiest of grounds, this occasion clearly qualified for a slightly more deluxe artistic response. Ideally I wanted to produce something that would represent an overview of the last 30 years with references, if possible, to some of the pivotal moments. I also wondered if it might be possible to find inspiration from the number thirty, and it was while chewing over this line of enquiry that I remembered sampling a quite sublime 30-year-old Lagavulin single malt whisky during a distillery tour on my 60th birthday trip to Islay last year. Could a fiendishly clever parallel be drawn between thirty years of wedded bliss and the production of a similarly-aged dram? Of course it could! The initial idea turned out to be the easy bit. Actually recreating one of those diagrammatic production-process illustrations, re-imagined as a thirty year relationship with the accompanying text re-written accordingly and then all somehow legibly arranged into a single image was as challenging a graphic design conundrum as I’ve ever grappled with. Here’s the result of the whole laborious business anyway, with enlarged details in the interests of clarity. Don’t expect to understand all the in-jokes.
