St. Joe Fishing Report | 6 March 2020
Headed up the Joe on Tuesday for the first time this year! Still lots of snow up there. Hopefully it melts off slowly. Calder was snow-free but for everything else you'll at the very least need a rope to drag a boat out. Id carefully inspects where you plan to takeout before you put in. Started the morning out with nymphs. Stones, small, attractor patterns as well as san juans produced fish. The streamer game was good with olive being our best color. In the afternoon we switched to a chubby and a small parachute. Found fish on both.

The fall fishing is really amazing up on the Joe! Streamers, nymphs and drys. What ever method you prefer the fish are aggressive and ready to eat a well presented fly.
Streamer fishing with light tips and black and olive mini dungeons and scupzillas has been real productive
Nymph fishing with 5 feet from bobber to point fly Pat's rubber leg size 8 and a bead head or smaller size 14 Pat's or a October caddis nymph gets it done.
If you are dry fly fishing look for pods of fish. Be patient and track what the fish are doing prior to casting figure out the fishes rhythm.
Small bwo's, mahoganys, and October caddis. Fish longer leaders with 5x or 6x with small bwo's and bigger October caddis fish 3x or 4x shorter leaders. Fish high bank and runs with October caddis. Fish the glides with small mayflies..
Steelhead numbers are looking good as well so we will be transitioning to steelhead angling over the next few weeks.

The fly fishing is real good right now.
Streamer fishing check
Nymph fishing always good
Dry fly fishing really good like really really good!🤩
One of our guides, Mike, was up streamer fishing and he found some good fish and action with olive and natural colored streamers under a light sink tip less than 3 ips 7.5' tip. Fish the high bank, buckets and riffles.
Kyle has been driving bobbers down river like a mad man this summer. He is real good at the nymph game.. fishing Pat's rubber legs and a bead head has done the trick. Bobber to point fly formula is 5 feet without weight. Fish the high bank and focus on slow water down low in the run walking pace moving water or even a little slower.
I have been dry fly fishing a lot. I have teo dry fly rods set up and transition back and forth depending on the water. High back riffle fish a October caddis. Glide and tail end of the run fish a small mahogany or rusty spinner size 16-20 5x or 6x longer leader.
Also finding a fair amount of fish on small terrestrials (ants)
Drop by the shop for more info and gear.

St. Joe Fishing Report | 22 April 2019
Took a stroll up to the Joe to take a crack at the high water fishing, flows were over 8000 cfs. We put in at Big Creek and took out at The Cutthroat Resort (Big Eddie). We are excited the Cutthroat is open for business!!! Fish the banks, back eddies and side channels when flows are high. Water temps were running 45 deg F mid-day. We stuck to dry fly fishing for most of the day as the fish are looking up. The bugs and hatches were sparse up the river, and lower sections were fishing well as the bug activity increased.  The best section was the float from Calder to 16 mile or down to St. Joe river city. Fish are hungry for march browns, skwalas winter stone flies. For nymphing, fish with stone flies and worms. Streamer fishing is good with heavy sink tips. Stop by the shop for all the bugs for the Joe!

St. Joe Fishing Report | 15 April 2019
Looks like the report did not load so I'm a couple days late getting this posted. We fished from Calder down to 16 mile bridge. Water temps 44°F mid day. We started the day out streamer fishing and switched over to drys by 11:30. Fish are looking up and eating Skwalas! We did not see many skwalas on the water. There were more March browns and small winter stones flies on the water. Ended up bombing the bank most of the day with bigger foam body skwalas. This paid off in a big way. The dry fly fishing is amazing right now on the Joe. Talked to another guide that put in a big creek, they did real well on streamers and heavy sink tips until the dry fly fishing picked up. Time to get up on the Joe for the spring Skwala and March brown hatch!

St. Joe Fishing Report | 12 April 2019
Kyle and Nate have been up fish all week on the Joe from Avery down to St Joe river city. Flows have dropped and conditions have changed.
Fishing today was phenomenal. We had fish up on dries from 1:30-4:30 eating bwo’s and Nemoura’s. A size 10-20 bwo and a size 16 purple haze got the job done all day. Water temps are at 41-42 and the flows are at 8000 and dropping. Clarity is 6 ft. Skwalas will be coming soon and fish are colored up for the spawn and super hungry.

St. Joe River Fishing Report | 6/24/2018-6/26/2018
FLOWS: 2,120-2,350 cfs
WEATHER: Beautiful
FISH: Westslope Cutthroat
BEST TIME: Afternoon
MORE: Summer is in full swing! Early mornings offer a landscape of a lush misty green canyon paired with a soundtrack of the wild Idaho songbird. Luckily, we got in with the shuttle drivers early since everyone wanted a piece of the Joe this morning. Beware those wild Idaho songbirds. Birds of prey circle overhead, watching us with jealously as we trick westslope trout to the water surface with golden stoneflies, madam x, split wing emergers, pink alberts, and peds sometimes paired with the occasional beadhead prince nymph or stonefly dropper. To those of you holding on to the endurance built from stripping streamers all spring, or still haven't caught your spring unicorn (bully), use olive sculpin patterns under a sink tip. Fish were still stoked on grabbing those imitation fish.

St. Joe River Fishing Report | 17 June, 2018
SECTION: Marble Creek to Calder
FLOWS: 3020 cfs
WEATHER: In the morning, with temp of 72.0 °F. In the afternoon, with temp of 71.1 °F
CATCH RATE: >1-2 fish/hour
HATCHES: PMDs
FISH: Westslope Cutthroat
BEST FLIES: PMDs
BEST TIME: Afternoon
MORE: ALIVE! The contrasting glimpses of a fleeting spring and a impeding yet rapidly approaching summer made me feel alive. Mixed emotions of nostalgia for what was (winter) and excitement for what is to come (summer) were with me throughout the day. I feel the fish were thinking the same thing- reluctant to take a nymph but greedy to take both meaty and petite dry flies given the opportunity. Perhaps the wet versus dry dichotomy was because there’s less invertebrate drift during this interim season that had the cutthroat’s eyes looking up to the surface. Either way, fishing was slower in the morning but picked up to pleasant consistency as the afternoon wore on, with fish of all sizes eager to eat a dry as PMDs began to hatch around noon. I suppose, still shaking off a cold evening, they needed the mid afternoon sun shining through the clouds to warm up their mouths. With the water still dropping from recent spring storms, look for this action in the soft water of eddies and side channels. Enjoy limits of fun and smiles!

We have been swinging flies with trout spey rods using heavy poly leaders and finding fish a few on the swing and others stripping. If you are floating the river, fish the side channels with the higher flows, you won't be disappointed. By Monday afternoon the river bumped up above 8000 cfs and the water clarity dropped some on the lower river. We were still picking up fish despite the lower visibility and the river bumping up over 1500 cfs in one day.
