Dr. Ida Stephens Owens (September 13, 1939 – February 24, 2020) was a scientist known for her work with drug-detoxifying enzymes. She received her Ph.D. from Duke University, making her one of the first two African Americans to receive a doctorate from the school. Rev. Owen Lun West Smith (May 18, 1851 – January 5, 1926) was a minister and diplomat.

He was born enslaved in Giddensville, North Carolina. At the start of the Civil War, he would follow the Confederate army while serving as a personal servant. He would enlist in the Union Army and go on to fight in the Battle of Bentonville.

After becoming a freedman, he worked as a teacher before getting a scholarship to attend the University of South Carolina.

In 1880 he would convert to the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church while attending a camp in Whiteville, North Carolina. He attained a preacher’s license and was ordained as a local deacon. Following his conversion, he would go on to receive an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Livingstone College.

After having been appointed on February 11, 1898, he would serve as the Minister Resident to Liberia (1898-1902). #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
