Why are you learning to code?
I've been asked this a lot recently and feel like I should have a long and elaborate response about how I've always known I wanted to study computer science or that I’m super technologically savvy so learning to code was the next logical thing to do. Both those things are not true.
I never considered working with computers. I like working with people; I'm good at understanding others, listening and communicating. I also really love learning so I pursued a career in education and attempted to teach what I love and counsel others to find their passions.
So why quit my job to learn how to code?
When I was in college and still deciding what I wanted to be, the Internet was different. Having an interest in working with people, to me, meant getting a degree in Psychology and working in a field like education. Over the past decade, however, the rise of social media applications happened and that was the beginning of the change in social interactions. Facebook provided me with a better way to reach out to my students, LinkedIn provided a platform for teaching networking skills  and even Pinterest was a great resource to connect with visual learners. The Internet has become about interactions between people and it's pretty amazing that programmers can create these environments from just a bunch of numbers, letters and symbols. This was the start of my interest in building things with code.
Working as a career adviser has also broaden my understanding of the Tech Industry and the more I learned about it, the more I was attracted to the field. I used to think that programmers would sit by themselves on a computer all day. Total misconception! They get to problem solve, use their creativity to build things, all while collaborating with others.
Out of curiosity, I tried the tutorials on Codecademy, Treehouse and Code School. At first it all seemed like nonsense and I really didn't think it was possible to learn. But I kept coming back to it and what was once meaningless came together and started to make sense. It was really exciting seeing what I could build. Intrigued by the creativity and challenge, I decided that I didn't have to choose between working with people or computers, it was possible to do both!
Fast forward to now: I am enrolled in a Web Development Intensive course beginning this September. Super excited to immerse myself in the learning experience and start collaborating and building awesome things with others. I will be keeping track of the things I’m learning, cool stuff I come across, and also blog about the ups and downs of my progress.
