Yo La Tengo - In Your Ear Records, Providence, Rhode Island, September 28, 1990

Yo La Tengo just released a 25th anniversary edition of Electr-O-Pura — but where’s the 30th anniversary edition of Fakebook?! Maybe it doesn’t need a reissue, it’s perfect as is. But there is this excellent little in-store mini-set to listen to from the Fakebook tour, featuring a not-too-long-lived YLT lineup: Kevin Salem on shimmering Schramm-y lead guitar and Wilbo Wright on bass. Very nice stuff — way back when, the “Speeding Motorcycle” here made its way onto the Sunsquashed Archives comp Fakebook LIVE, which you can still grab (I recommend you do so!). Otherwise, we’ve got a good mix of covers (Volcano Suns, “Palisades Park”) and originals (“Did I Tell You,” “Alyda”), and plenty of laid-back banter. A cool hang at In Your Ear!

YLT actually have a Fakebook sequel of sorts coming out soon — the Sleepless Night EP, which features terrific takes on the Byrds, Dylan, and others, plus a new original. It’s great, of course.

just scheduled a session at Retromedia [Red Bank, NJ] to record upright bass tracks with Wilbo Wright + do some guitar re-amping.  above is a video of Wilbo playing an upright made out of a Honda Accord's gas tank.

Wilbo Wright [one of the two bassists from the band UI amongst hundreds of other projects - he's the balder one with the shirt that says "Jeff" in this vid] is playing upright bass on the next Roy Orbitron record.  we're doing the whole thing, tentatively called "Tom Petty," at Retromedia Sound Studios in Red Bank NJ.  Dan Jefferson (from the past two records "George Harrison" and "Fluorescent Spells") has already finished up drum tracks and i laid down reference guitars and vocals to go out and wrangle up players with.  i'm excited.

BY THE WAY: Wilbo also made an upright bass out of a Honda Accord's gas tank.
