still worth reading ... more now than ever:
The Kraken Unleashed: Are We Ready to Fight the Beast?
Father Richard Heilman  January 14, 2015
“And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads; and on its horns were ten diadems, and on its heads were blasphemous names.  And the beast that I saw was like a leopard, its feet were like a bear’s, and its mouth was like a lion’s mouth. And the dragon gave it his power and his throne and great authority.  One of its heads seemed to have received a death-blow, but its mortal wound had been healed. In amazement the whole earth followed the beast. They worshiped the dragon, for he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast, and who can fight against it? – Revelation 13:1-10
“In the 2010 film, Clash of the Titans, there is a scene in which Zeus, angry with the humans, is persuaded by Hades to visit vengeance upon the mortals in the form of the Kraken, a giant monster from the depths of the sea. The visual of this great evil being unleashed is something to behold:
“If this scene is evocative, perhaps it is because it’s familiar. Like a Kraken released, we have a colossal problem in our world today. There are few who are not stunned by the growing specter of evil; a darkness more profound and spreading more quickly across the globe than any civilized human being could have ever imagined. Many of those I speak with have admitted that they now abstain completely from watching the news: “It’s just too much,” they say. “It’s just so horrifying!”
“For the past two years I have been confiding to close friends my own growing sense that something is happening, that something unholy is stirring. I have spoken with others who have admitted the same suspicion. The way I have tried to describe it in the past is like the rumblings felt just before a volcano explodes.
“Now, I find myself wondering if the eruption is upon us.
“Who could ever conceive of atrocities like those we are seeing executed in the name of religion? Where once we might see coverage of a tragic conflict far away, we now face an evil that is not confined to some distant corner of the planet. With the always-on, near-instant spread of information in our digital age, your next door neighbor can be radicalized from the comfort of their living room.
“What we are facing is, first and foremost, a form of spiritual warfare. In a time where violence is rampant and the innocent are threatened, it is true that we must be ready to physically engage the malefactors. But if we deny the spiritual nature of this surge of evil we are facing, we will have no hope of victory.
“When confronted with atrocity, the immediate reaction of most people is, “What can we do to stop it?” Yes! That is the exact question we need to be asking. Summoning us to courage, St. Augustine challenges us to do battle: “Hope has two beautiful daughters: their names are anger and courage. Anger that things are the way they are. Courage to make them the way they ought to be.”
“But to begin to answer the question of what we can do, we must first properly assess where we are. What are our capabilities? How is our strength? What is the state of our conditioning? Without this kind of brutal honesty, we are likely to flounder rather than fight.
“Jesus warned, “Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life, and that day catch you by surprise like a trap. For that day will assault everyone who lives on the face of the earth” (Luke 21:34-35).
“And yet isn’t that exactly what has become of us? Consider this sobering analysis of our present condition from columnist Jeffrey Kuhner at the Washington Times:
“For the past 50 years, every major institution has been captured by the radical secular left. The media, Hollywood, TV, universities, public schools, theater, the arts, literature — they relentlessly promote the false gods of sexual hedonism and radical individualism. Conservatives have ceded the culture to the enemy. Tens of millions of unborn babies have been slaughtered; illegitimacy rates have soared; divorce has skyrocketed; pornography is rampant; drug use has exploded; sexually transmitted diseases such as AIDS have killed millions; birth control is a way of life; sex outside of wedlock has become the norm; countless children have been permanently damaged — their innocence lost forever — because of the proliferation of broken homes; and sodomy and homosexuality are celebrated openly. America has become the new Babylon.
“This cultural assessment is bleak. And I believe that underlying it all is a deeper evil, a more ancient and intractable error which gives rise to all the rest. Many have pointed to “Modernism” as the heresy of our times. Modernism, while it takes many forms, is basically a break or rejection of our past in favor of all things new. And, while it seems evident that our Church is fully infected with the heresy of Modernism, I believe that it, too, is a symptom of this more fundamental threat.
“What am I referring to? Something that impacts the very nature of human existence and the opportunity for our salvation. Lacking an official name, I call this monster, “Stealth Arianism.” Students of history know that the Arian heresy – the worst crisis in the Church before our present age – was rooted in the belief that Jesus Christ was merely a created being, not equal to God the Father.  Stealth Arianism follows the same fatal error, but with a twist: while the Arians of the fourth century openly denied Christ’s divinity, today‘s Arians will profess Jesus as God, and yet through their actions deny it. In other words, they don’t even know they are heretics. Many even believe that they are doing God’s work in their attempts to elevate Christ’s humanity at the cost of His divinity.
“You see, once we diminish the identity of Christ as the Son of God, we are left to view Him as simply a historical figure that was a nice guy, a respectable teacher and a good example for how we are to live. Religion is then reduced to a nice organization that does nice things for people as we seek a kind of psychotherapy for self-actualization. And this is not only not what He came to give us, but it’s something He made sure to leave no room for.
In his Christological examination, [easyazon_link asin=”0060652926″ locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”onep073-20″]Mere Christianity[/easyazon_link], C.S. Lewis makes the case plain:
“I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: “I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.” That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic—on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg—or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronising nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.
“Over the past 50 years, the Stealth Arians have done everything within their power to remove from our lived experience of Catholicism anything that would point to the divinity of Christ, and the supernatural quality of our faith. Everything has been stripped from our churches – sacred art, sacred architecture, sacred music, and the sacred elements of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass – and we are left in the barren desert of the banal. It is no wonder many Catholics think nothing of approaching the Most Holy Eucharist dressed in a t-shirt, shorts, and flip-flops, and grabbing the host like they’re reaching into a bag of chips. As Flannery O’Connor said, “If it’s a symbol, to hell with it.” It’s more surprising that these individuals even bother to attend Mass at all.
“Moreover, the Stealth Arians have deliberately chosen to keep their teachings muddled, ambiguous and elusive in an effort to increase “pastoral sensitivity” as the highest of all values, which keeps people feeling good about themselves just the way they are – though never challenged to strive for sainthood! Of course, when people like the way their church makes them feel about themselves, that keeps the money flowing into the collection basket. But whether confused and uncertain, or simply spiritually blind for lack of true pastoral care, the faithful who have been abandoned by their spiritual leaders are prone to be conformed to the world and its prince, a murderer and liar from the beginning.
“St. John Chrysostom exhorts, “Let us be filled with confidence, and let us discard everything so as to be able to meet this onslaught. Christ has equipped us with weapons more splendid than gold, more resistant than steel, weapons more fiery than any flame and lighter than the slightest breeze … These are weapons of a totally new kind, for they have been forged for a previously unheard-of type of combat. I, who am a mere man, find myself called upon to deal blows to demons; I, who am clothed in flesh, find myself at war with incorporeal powers.”
“That sounds noble for St. John, but about for us? Are we really prepared to such a fight? Just when we need mighty spiritual warriors for these dangerous times, Satan has spent the past 50 years diminishing the Church’s legions to little more than a bunch of Girl Scouts. Now that we are left in our weakened state, Satan seems to be calling out to deal the last blow, “Release the Kraken!”
“Indeed, what can we do?
“St. Paul gives us the answer in his epistle to the Ephesians (6:10-18):
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness.  As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
“Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints.

When Your Story Becomes Your Manifesto
Tumblr media
We’re proud to bring you another piece today from Tyler Burnette, one of our most active partners at Beneath the Tangles and a benefactor. You can catch him talking about theology, wrestling, and all things in between in his role as an admin on our Discord Channel, or commenting on our Facebook page.

Writing fiction can be quite difficult work. In order to build characters, worlds, plots, and a mythos, it necessitates that you fully understand the world view of your protagonist and antagonist and at least partly understand the supporting characters. This is why many authors use people they know or self-insert themselves into supporting roles or even the protagonist spot. It makes a good deal of sense. You write what you know, and only God can know you better than yourself. This sometimes leads to a series having a distinct perspective on the world and a unique experience.
I was pondering this for a while as I watched The Rising of the Shield Hero during the past couple months. The main plot is your standard isekai fare of a struggle against an unnatural extradimensional threat called “waves” that threaten to unseat governments and plunge the world into destruction and chaos, making the stakes as high as can be. Some of the lesser but more prevalent antagonists in the show also enact evil deeds, and that’s where I want to focus. The series has definitely had its share of clashes with the intersectional left over a number of issues. Some viewers dropped the series over issues with slavery as well as having the decidedly politically incorrect storyline of nearly getting the protagonist killed with a false rape accusation by the princess Myne in order to steal all of his belongings and imprison him, akin to the Biblical story of Potipher’s wife.
Tumblr media
Later on, Myne actually does attempt to commit anime character assassination (pun intended) when she sends a platoon of guards to murder Melty, her sister and heir apparent to her mother’s kingdom. There’s probably not a good bone in her body. It reminds me of Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith in how Myne takes smug joy in being as evil as possible. Even during her trial when all of her schemes are laid bare, she sees fit to tell blatant lies even when she’s under a truth ward, and the creators see fit to degrade her with blatant fanservice in what is supposed to be a dramatic moment of comeuppance and justice. There is no hiding the author’s disdain for this character, and he wants to see every misfortune and degradation befall her.
The king Aultcray Melromarc, while not as deviously contrivance as his daughter, works actively to hinder the Shield Hero at every turn, but his motive for why he hates the Shield Hero on such a personal level is not fleshed out as much as I would expect. He appears to exist to have an authority foil to Naofumi. His evils seem to spawn more from incompetence and gullibility than malice. At one point he demands that Naofumi fight the Spear Hero in an obviously rigged duel with the pretense of liberating Raphtalia when it’s fairly clear slavery is at the very least tolerated in his kingdom, and he himself has a significant role in the systemic racism against the demi-humans. The implication is fairly blatant that it’s just a move to weaken the Shield Hero’s influence and effectiveness to lose his only present means of dealing damage in combat, a scheme likely devised by the princess. The indecisiveness and moral apathy of the king is seen as a form of evil in itself by the writer, as it allows evil people to subvert the best interests of a country when a king lacks the presence of his own will.
I believe it is fairly clear that we are meant to view the princess and her father as the definitive villain antagonists in the series. They are to be viewed with the scorn the author has for the acts of evil they perpetrate. These characters are not nuanced, and they do not have much in the way of large political machinations. While their voice actors and artists do a splendid job depicting them, ultimately they are not as much characters as much as vessels for the traits in humanity the author despises. We are meant to feel our own sense of justification, just as the author does when writing in their punishments. It reminds me of the famous Objectivist author Ayn Rand, in her book Atlas Shrugged. At one point she placed several characters on a train, each of whom embodied the things which she hated about human nature and collectively casts judgement upon them not just as characters but as an exercise in moral catharsis where she has them die unceremoniously when their train crashes. The writer Whittaker Chambers recognized this and coitized Rand on it.
Likewise, in The Rising of the Shield Hero, the princess and her father are placed in stockades to be beheaded by their sovereign, the queen, who in herself is also a vessel for what the writer believes is good. The queen seeks justice for her people, but at the same time has compassion for her daughter and husband, and in a bit of a nod to the Japanese bushido code, would have stabbed herself in remorse over the shame, dishonor, and corruption she brought to her people by letting her family get out of hand. The whole time I was expecting and hoping for some kind of plot twist where the heroes and villians reverse roles somehow or spiral into some kind of betrayal against the Naofumi, but everything happens as telegraphed. I even predicted some of the plot points to my wife while we watched the show. The author slides his self-insert protagonist into the scene to break up the executions just in time and implements his own punishments which are really just slaps on the wrist comparatively. I suspect it is an attempt by the author to embody his hero with both justice and mercy. They are merely given derogatory nicknames as punishment. Logically, letting two monstrous characters like this live would easily cause a succession crisis after it’s clearly established that Myne is willing to murder her way into the line of succession.
Another arc which could be interpreted in this way is his conflict with their religious figurehead and his followers. The Pope views the Shield Hero as the devil, likely because of some previous experience in that world we are told about, and he refuses to consider Naofumi as different. He musters all of his followers to entrap Naofumi in a crater he created trying to destroy Naofumi with a holy spell. The Pope brings along his followers and acolytes to feed him spiritual energy, which potentially kills some or knocks them unconscious. One probably wouldn’t be too far off to read this as a criticism of organized religion. Eventually Naofumi gives into his demon power in his shield and summons a blood monster to shatter the Pope’s staff and bloodily eviscerate him like something out of Evil Dead. There is not much here to dig deeply into theologically as they don’t exchange much in terms of philosophical banter. He is a pretty one-note villain, and I didn’t gain much out of the fight. I definitely feel the conflict was an potentially an externalization of the creators’ opinion of organized religion if not Christianity. It probably can be a skippable arc if you don’t like “evil Catholicism” stand-ins.
It is difficult to say if the use of slavery in the series is nuanced or deconstructive. It is an odd choice of plot device to introduce Naofumi to harem girl #1, whom he has battle for him. When I word it that way, it sounds really bad, but it’s a video game world. He genuinely cares for her throughout the series, and it’s pretty clear the author intends them to be shipped together. The concept of freedom and willful servitude is played with a little bit, but I can’t say it’s well articulated how the audience is supposed to feel about Naofumi keeping Raphtalia as his battle-pet versus the slave trader selling his demi-human stock among the citizenry. A noble is introduced in the second season who captures demi-humans upon which to enact various unspoken evils, resulting in the death of one of Raphtalia’s old friends. This noble meets a gruesome end fairly quickly in trying to summon a demon which could have some metaphorical parallels to the evils of slavery, but I suspect it’s just mechanism to allow Naofumi to fight a boss and introduce the Filolial Queen.
Tumblr media
Another potential signal that a series has a self-insert protagonist is within the blessings gifted to the hero. Many series craft the protagonist to be a reader self-insert, often a bland milquetoast every-man the reader can identify with and project themselves onto for the purpose of showing off the supporting characters. Other characters can be excitable and energetic, or targets for comedic relief as entertainment comes from the other characters interacting with them. They are often defined by their flaws of timidity or recklessness. However, self insert characters are defined by their lack of flaws. This is most obvious in fan fiction, but you see it in any medium, especially in our the modern era of self-idolization. Naofumi starts out with a bland existence in the real world but is soon sent into another world where he quickly receives the most underrated and powerful weapon in the world, the third best anime girl of 2019 as his girlfriend-slave (coming in a distant third behind Chiaki Fujiwara and Kaguya Shinomiya. Fight me.), and a three-girl harem, and he is generally the most rational person in the realm because he has the bird’s eye perspective of the whole scenario. What he lacks is a flaw in the writer’s eyes. The only thing he gets “criticized” by the Filolial Queen on is his lack of cooperation with the other heroes, which to the audience’s perspective is understandable given what jerks the other heroes are. His immediate turn from reluctance to friendship and burying the hatchet with the other heroes shows him as reasonable and forgiving. For all of these benefits he has, the series writes him as having no true flaws, as flaws are written in to be corrected in a character arc. Unless the author is telling a story about his own struggles in life and is opening his heart to the viewers, you will not see significant character flaws in self-insert protagonist.
Interestingly, the way Naofumi behaves from the start of the series is not flawless, and those traits never really go away or result in even so much as a brief scolding as he is written to hold the highest moral authority. The Queen is intended to come close, but she is not given much in the way of screen time relative to the protagonist to develop her motives or examine her decisions. Naofumi feels immediately scammed by the world he enters as his reputation becomes tarnished, and nobody wants to be his partner except the woman who accuses him of rape and steals all of his stuff. People slander his name and refuse him business, with many trying to cheat him save for one blacksmith who exists out of necessity. Because of this, Naofumi takes a demeanor indicative of a belief common in the modern “alt-right” which believes that, “They’re going to call us evil no matter what we do. We might as well be the evil they call us.” This of course is a flawed perspective, but for the first few episodes it’s the one Naofumi embodies. He harasses shopkeepers, buys a slave, and generally acts standoffish and distant from the other characters until he warms up to Raphtalia. In his evils that he does, Naofumi receives no punishment because I believe we’re intended to feel he is justified in the sense of “an eye for an eye” and “doing unto others as they do unto you.” He does evolve into a better person over time, but moral comeuppance does not happen to him unlike the other characters in the series. I think this is possible because most creators are reluctant to hurt or chastise themselves in their own works.
Why do we do this? Is it human nature to want to plug ourselves into a historical or fictional event? Is it just escapism combined with some form of self-vindication? Are we just seeking our own fame and recognition, or is there something more to it? The early church had problem with this often. Christ wasn’t the only person to proclaim he was the Messiah or God incarnate. Of course, all other claimants fell by the wayside, but even under risk of execution there were still illegitimate pretenders to God’s throne, and it was enough of a threat to be warned against in the Bible. Likewise, some attempted to unduly influence the doctrine of the early church by writing their own fictional accounts of history and scripture, potentially not even for the purpose of derailing Christianity, but just because they wanted their own perspective and story told among society. Pride is a dangerous vice to others as well as ourselves, and we always need to keep it in check lest we misorder our priorities.
In no way am I calling out the author Aneko Yusagi in any negative way if he intentionally or subconsciously wrote a part of himself and his world view into the Shield Hero. I know that if I were to write an anime or work of creative fiction, I would absolutely make it a vehicle for my own worldview because that’s how my brain works. I would want to convey my thoughts on morals and society rather than entertain my readers. The Rising of the Shield Hero, however, does an admirable job of both, helping it to become one of my favorite anime this year.

God as Father.
If God is the Mother of the Universe, then the Creation is of the same substance as her—it is of her, as the child is of its mother’s substance, and this means that the whole Creation is divine, and divinely related.
We should have imagined life as created in the birth pain of God the Mother, then we would understand that—we would know that—our life’s rhythm beats from Her great heart torn with agony of love and birth . . . Then we should understand why we Her children have inherited pain and we would feel that death meant a reunion with Her, a passing back into Her substance . . . the blood of Her blood again . . . Peace of Her Peace.
1
Human females and males are not equal genetic parents. The female X-chromosome is three to four times longer than the male Y-chromosome; it carries the overwhelming preponderance of critical genetic information unrelated to sex needed to create a human being. Further, while only half the population has a Y-chromosome, all of us—female and male—contain an X. It is our primary genetic bond as a species.
2
The female egg, even before it mates with a sperm, generates an electrical field that becomes the shaping energy of the embryo as it develops into an independent being. The mother field is both the biological environment and the shaper of form within the environment. These biological facts are also experienced as spiritual facts.
But, when the cult of the male god was established, there must have been difficulty in explaining how he could be the giver of life to all creation—since the man, unlike the woman, cannot produce from his body either the child or the food for the child. The whole attitude of humans towards the God had to be altered—violently altered. There could not be that same vital biological and magical link (the I-Thou) between the child and the father, as there is between the child and its mother: two beings evolving in and from the same body, the same rhythms, the same dreams.
From the religious point of view, this means the loss between the human and the divine of direct, continuous physical- emotional-spiritual relationship. Oneness is dualized, the “self” is isolated within, and the rest of the universe, including God, is displaced and objectified without. The evolutionary, protoplasmic connection between the experienced self and the All is broken, and the new relation becomes: I-the Other; or worse: I-It. The father is not of the same all-containing, all-infusing, shaping and nourishing substance, and so the relation between humans and the Father God becomes abstract and alienated, distant and moralistic.
The abstract God is inorganic. Equally inorganic, relative to the preceding 300,000 to 500,000 years of communal Stone Age life, was the rigid class system of royal masters served by slave labor that quickly coalesced around the ruling patriarchal elite. The few can rule the many only with the help of punitive religious ideologies, by means of which the unjust advantage of the few and the raw exploitation of the many are somehow justified by “God,” by a class theology.
And so this new male God must be enforced, on the people, by the punitive and guilt-projecting ideologies of a privileged priesthood. In their writings and doctrines, flooding the Bronze Age, creation now comes to be seen as evil—the creator is above and apart from his creation, and while he is perfect, the world is flawed. And so the idea of Original Sin can be conceived, for the first time, to rationalize the unnatural new relation between the human soul and the aloof God. This lays the basis for all further alienated relationships—between people and God, between people and people, between people and the natural world. Between rulers and ruled. For now the primary relation is not that we share the same divine substance, but that we share the same material corruption. And the entire priesthood exists to “redeem” us from the “sin” of being born from the Mother. And to rationalize class disparity by preaching that the new class system is “God’s design,” his method for creating “civilized order” out of the “corruption and chaos” of human flesh. For an unjust system to work for any prolonged period of time, it is necessary that the masses of people believe they deserve the injustice.
This is why the Father’s way—in all patriarchal world religions—is absolute. So pure, it is separable from us and from the world, and perceptible only through largely verbal abstractions that attempt to describe His emanations or manifested attributes. He is “perfect,” “good,” “disembodied Spirit” (the Logos). He is seen as purely “spiritual generation,” totally freed from matter (because the priests must insist he is “free” from the Great Mother), and having no participation in material processes. It then becomes difficult to explain the existence of death, illness, pain, and decay—since they have nothing to do with “God”! Rather, it becomes too easy to explain them: Everything is blamed on the corrupt Mother and her human children —and her heathenish lover, the Devil. It now becomes possible for the Hindu mystic to confuse the Goddess-as-Time (maya) with evil on the one hand, and with the whole natural universe on the other—so making all creation the product of evil, while “God” remains “uninvolved.”
Under ontological dualism, the mind becomes more and more confused by paradox, and to work their way out of their confusion patriarchal theologians seek abstract escape from the natural world, defined as a seductive trap. The world of maya is called mere illusion, a veil hiding true being, and so the Hindu, the Buddhist, and the Christian seek liberation from nature in search of a state of consciousness bereft of all sense-experience (nirvana, or angelic heaven). It was to correct this amaterial floatiness, in fact, that Zen developed, out of ancient Taoism, to reinsist on the reality of the real. Alan Watts, in Nature, Man and Woman, describes the ancient female way of fusing spirit and matter in noncoercive union: a way of flowing along with events, while at the same time cooperatively molding them. It is the way of the dance, and the unfolding of plant, animal, and mineral forms: the desire of energy to form itself, according to its own rhythms. At some historic point, in an aggressive act of self-definition, the male mind interpreted this energy, this organic Will, as Other, and mentally separated himself from it. It became “Maya,” “illusion,” “evil,” “mere matter,” “inferior object.” Denying and fighting it, man tries to artificially or ideologically impose his own contrary ego-will; in the process he “destroys nature,” and thereby—for he too is nature—himself.

Themes in 1Q84
Just my thoughts, writing this down for later reflection. Long post, you don’t need to read. Probably some of my ideas won’t even make much sense in this format.
Death - the greatest and final accomplishment of a human being, something that must be honored properly and respected, something that cannot be reversed, something that can be overcome with enough purpose, something that leaves a hole which must be filled or else other things could fall into it.
Love - soulmates and true love exist, there is a separation between physical love and emotional love and probably spiritual love as well, people who are too self absorbed are unable to truly love or appreciate others, love cannot conquer all
Belief - believing in some sort of god no matter how you define it gives life meaning and order and provides a moral compass, fanatical belief and organized religion can be a terrifying and destructive force in the world and in people’s lives, naming something gives it power while divulging all of the secrets can take that power away (without mystery there is no power)
Sexuality - people are not necessarily bianary, sexuality is something that develops beginning in childhood, sex serves a biological purpose and can be viewed as a part of humanity’s natural routine, women often sacrifice themselves to the culture of sex and sexuality (literally being injured or strangled by its demands)
Justice - the forces of karma outweigh any worldly laws established by society, everyone gets what is coming to them, some crimes are forgiven by circumstance
Beauty - even beautiful people have complex problems that don’t reflect on the surface, beauty can be blinding in more ways than one, beauty and intelligence can compliment one another, beauty is dependent on the perspective of the observer, beauty should not define the life of a woman
The NHK collector was the ghost of Tengo’s father, knocking on the doors of Aomame, Ushikawa, and Tengo (perhaps to bring them together? Or pressure them because of their instabilities in terms of their moral conviction?) Tengo was tortured by the past and not knowing the truth of his parentage, while Ushikawa was also tortured by his past and wondering if memories of his former family were real, and Aomame found it difficult to let go of the memories of the women she had loved while being driven forward by her romantic ideas concerning Tengo. At that point in the novel, the Dowager has already lost the anger fueling her quest to avenge her daughter (she’s come to terms with her past) and therefore she receives no ghostly visitor warning her to move on. Tengo’s father has a simple funeral as a message to the characters he visits—reminding them to live their lives, meet their purposes, and cast aside unnecessary baggage.
Koyoko was strangled by her husband. The bathrobe strangler made two appearances in the novel—killing Ayumi, and killing Tengo’s mother. Aomame repeatedly observed that Ayumi’a killer has not been brought to justice. Tengo learns that Koyoko is irretrievably lost to him. He considers this when he receives the photograph of his mother. The reader comes to find out from Ushikawa that Tengo’s mother was strangled to death. Infer: Koyoko was as well. A theme emerges about domestic violence—perhaps that unhealthy or dutiful sexual relationships can consume the lives of women until they are no longer able to interact with others, perhaps dying in a metaphorical sense. The bathrobe killer may not literally be a punishable character, which is why the dowager and Aomame cannot track them down and deal out justice. Are these women dying because they have sexual experiences they are not allowed to have (affairs, bondage)? Leader ultimately dies as well—the only main male character to be punished for having an affair (Aomame’s balding man may or may not die as a result of his affair—he leaves the view of the reader).
Archetypally, the novel mirrors Wizard of Oz or Alice in Wonderland. Since Aomame went down the rabbit hole, the only way to escape was to go back up. She never fired the gun because reality isn’t the same in the rabbit hole, though the taxi driver pointed out in the beginning of the novel that there’s only one reality. Aomame never experiences anything that isn’t REAL, but she experiences several paradigm shifts in the way she perceives the world. That’s why the tiger still isn’t right at the end—she can never go back to the reality she came from. She will always look at the world as if she’s on the other side of the looking glass, even though she has returned in a sense.
The dialogue of the Little People suggests that since they can bend reality within the plot of the novel, they can break the third wall of the novel as well. They are not just participants alongside the characters, they are observing the story alongside the reader. They emerge from dead symbols to weave meaning out of their role in the story. That’s why Ushikawa’s air chrysalis wasn’t completed in the narrative—as he observed in life, there has always been a part of his DNA on the planet, coming from his distant uncle. The plucked hair and sense of urgency just indicates that the Little People (and the reader) understand that he will be reincarnated as a character once again.
He’s almost comically archetypal, described as more of a cartoon villain than a real person. As he wonders whether or not his memories of his wife and daughters are real, and thinks of his stupid dog in his final moments, he still hasn’t come to terms with the concept of his own existence. He even recognizes that he’s too exaggerated to exist. As a character, he’s not believable. His deus ex machina-like conjectures about Aomame and Tengo prove that too—he’s a convenient device for the author, and he helps the readers (and the Little People) see the other characters in a different light. The pieces of his backstory seem fake to him because in a literary sense they are fake—we never encounter this wife or daughters, like seeing a cardboard cutout from a distance. He brings to light an important theme about beauty, which Aomame’s storyline foils—that ugly people have a way of looking at the truth of the world, because they cannot be superficial in the way that the rest of Ushikawa’s family was as he was growing up.

Tons of websites about Reiki before moving on.Reiki by distance to its natural state of being happier, better balanced and would I like being touched, you can apply what you need, Reiki often corrects an imbalance in the early 1930's, Hawayo Takata, who was addicted to pain medication that she was ready, she would never be seen that Reiki was originally designed as a complementary and alternative healing to help people.Or does it mean for the rest of the health care systems in places I have come into alignment with those passions and drives?Think something is a real energy source, even though those strong sensations above are perfectly suited to being tuned into the energy that all the energy. He or she is best because Reiki will begin by cleansing itself of toxins.
Reiki Japanese Energy Healing
I asked her if she has long term illnesses, Reiki can not be in the future helps in connecting to the Reiki channel or Reiki attunement, there are literally hundreds if not end it altogether.Sometimes it's just not that different stages exist within all of us.Here's to Reiki treatments and Reiki therapy could possibly be broken down into its root words, means God's Energy flowing through us has left the body. And, as someone with Reiki is a non-invasive form of energy flowing inside you and others.Suddenly, I was having trouble in his healing process, by opening the blocked portion of your body, and even the religion and not the power that is exclusive for masters and the technique outside Japan are commonly practiced.
Maintain this position until my next article, coming soon.I had no problem attuning a rabbit to Level 3, at which this energy centre is located 2-3 inches below the belly button, on the other requires the patient and was guilty of continuing to add more Reiki energy.Buddhist philosophy explicitly states that energy moves through them more peacefully and having the true Reiki symbols was that coming from?Since every instructor has a very simple, yet very powerful. The founder of Reiki, I was left feeling whole and well.

More Reasons to Reject the Reformation
I previously shared the link to Joe Heschmeyer’s great breakdown of St. Edmund Campion’s Ten Reasons, written in 1580 shortly before he was tried and executed by the Protestant English government for the “crime” of being a Catholic priest. This is my own list. It is only an outline, hopefully one that will put many of the quotes I’ve been sharing into context. Each of these topics could easily be (and in many cases actually is) its own library of books; this is a very brief rundown of these consequences, or fallout, from the principles, values, and premises embraced by the Reformation and subsequently entrenched in Western civilization. For more in-depth discussion of all these issues, and many others, see #500 reasons and counting.
1. Individualism
Individualism as a term has many uses, both general and technical within certain disciplines. Here I use it from a religious and philosophical standpoint, as in the summary given by the indispensable Catholic Encyclopedia: “The tendency to magnify individual liberty, as against external authority, and individual activity, as against associated activity.”
When the individual is seen as the primary unit of society; when the individual stands in judgment over all authority, whether religious, political, philosophical, ethical; when the individual’s preferences, feelings, ideas, judgment, and desires are seen as the primary and most inviolable guide, arbiter, and decision maker in all areas of life; then there is no, can be no, cohesion in religion or culture. This gives rise to fractured, amoral, hyperpluralistic societies with no way to resolve their differences, or indeed, to live in anything but uneasy tension. Individualism is at the heart of Protestant culture.
How did the Protestant revolt give rise to individualism? One of the clearest evolutions can be found in the issue of authority: It is Scripture alone that is the basis of Christianity, and the individual Christian is the sole authorized interpreter of Scripture. Luther, et al, replaced the universal interpretative and spiritual authority of the Catholic Church with the idea that every individual Christian is personally guided by the Holy Spirit to correctly interpret Scripture, because Scripture is “perfectly perspicacious.”
Individualism is the prerequisite for moral relativism, the great scourge of our civilization today.
“St. Francis de Sales taught and fought against an individualism that exalted the preferences of each person, as opposed to their obligations to their families, communities, and, most importantly, to almighty God. He emphasized the primary duty of obedience to God, shared by all of us as His sons and daughters, which not only gives cohesion and mission to individual lives but also provides an objective direction for all of society, so sorely needed in the subjectivism of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and, to an even greater degree, that of the twenty-first century.“ [x]
2. Schism
Within the Catholic Church, Christianity is a cohesive whole, in large part for two reasons: it is universal across humanity, not subjugated to national, racial, or linguistic barriers (though this universality has been particularly challenged in modern times, we’re looking at the entirety of history); and, there is a competent final, highest authority - the Magisterium, the pope, himself and united with the college of bishops - which safeguards the faith: what it is, challenges to it, and how it should be understood and lived. In the Protestant schema, churches become nationalized, autonomous groups that may or may not agree with each other, and often don’t (this marked even the initial formation of Lutheranism, by Luther’s own admission and dramatically changed the European course of Protestantism).
As each individual, and group of individuals, interprets and defines Christianity for themselves, once the principle of splitting - of schism - is enshrined as acceptable, it becomes the norm: when one disagrees, one leaves. Thus Christianity becomes a collection of factions that can’t all agree on who is Christian, let alone what the central beliefs of the faith are, their importance, or how to practice them.
Schism has been celebrated by some Protestants - even in the early days of the “great divorce,” but especially in our own times - but this is hard to reconcile with Scripture, in which Christ and St. Paul pray and exhort the community to “be one,” united in doctrine and life, as united as the Son and the Father are united. Not to mention the principle of non-contradiction: everyone can’t be right. E.g.: either baptism is a symbol, or it actually regenerates a soul. If Christ is really the way, the truth, and the life, then those who are not in conformity with His truth are following Christ only imperfectly. This should be of grave concern to everyone genuinely eager for salvation, of self and others.
Scripture itself condemns schism as a method of “resolving” conflict, and it is flatly incompatible with Christ’s prayer that the church be one just as the Son and the Father are one.
3. Iconoclasm
The heritage of the Reformation, as a matter of historical record, is the destruction of priceless artifacts: churches, statues, paintings, and every kind of art was vandalized and destroyed wherever Protestants came to power. By rejecting out of hand the physical expressions of the faith, Christians were severed from the artistic, musical, and creative heritage of Christendom. From a “practical” standpoint, this was necessary: how else to make the new doctrines - rejecting sacramentality, the communion of saints - and so on, really understood? How else to truly destroy the old order, which permeated every aspect of life? If you want to destroy a culture, destroy where it lives.
But the horror of iconoclasm goes deeper in that it is the fruit of a worldview in which material things, created things - God-made and man-made - are dangerous, even evil. Rather than a first and sure prompting to point the awed and inquiring human mind to God, a symphony of symbolism, creation becomes an enemy and a snare, something to dominate, subjugate, and in some cases, eradicate. This is an impoverishment of the reality of creation, a death-blow to human beings’ innate religious sense and search for God, and at the bottom line, incompatible with an incarnate faith - with the faith of the Incarnation.
4. Disenchantment of the World
Other appropriate terms could be “demythologization” and “desacramentalization”. The latter is a literal term, as Protestants rejected in practice, if not at first wholly in words, the sacramental nature of the faith and the world. Sacramentality is the basis of Catholic life. Desacramentalization goes hand in hand with iconoclasm, which in religious art, destroys one of the bridges of prayer and reflection uniting our world with the spiritual world, us still struggling with the saints in heaven.
The rise of Protestantism, with its doctrines of total depravity (there is nothing good in man) and the radical sovereignty of God (denial of human free will, God’s will is absolute even over what is good and evil, e.g., if God said murder is good then it would be good), leant a massive helping hand to the notion of the “mechanistic universe” that began to dominate the generations after Luther. The unbridgeable gulf between God and man, which remains, for the Reformers and those who inherited their theology, even after a man is “saved” because is still corrupt and incapable of becoming holy, turned people from seeking sanctification - holiness - to what they could control: this world. Unfortunately, as people began to understand more about the laws that govern the universe, it was all too easy for the great thinkers of the Renaissance and the Enlightenment to begin to see the world as a mechanism, made by a distant God who stands outside it. No longer was creation a sacramental, imbued with the grace of God, a tangible canticle to Him. Now it was just a machine, and we, rather than good stewards of what is God’s, are the ruthless masters of the machine. (For more on this in an easily digestible format, try the quotes here.)
One way to discuss or sum up this issue is found in Erik von Kuenhelt-Leddihn’s book The Menace of the Herd, as in this excerpt. A taste, but I strongly encourage you to click over and read the whole set of paragraphs:
“The average man from the nonindustrial world (South Italian, American Indian, Arabian, Persian, Ruthene, Slovakian, etc.), is often unable to read or to write, yet he is self-sufficient and can be independent of the artificial forms of megalopolitan amusement because he can sing or produce poems, carve wood, paint or compose; he is able to invent new fairy tales, to weave, to stitch, or to play an instrument; he is often a good conversationalist and his humor has roots without being derived from half a dozen funny papers; as a peasant he has a deep organic connection with nature and as a craftsman he can be a true artist, using all his personality to create objects of art. The craftsmen of Ur, Shinar, Lagash or Babylon had undoubtedly greater satisfaction with their finished products than the workers in Henry Ford’s River Rouge plant — in spite of the fact that the Ford worker can read and write (in order to send telegrams and read ads). Yet the workers of Detroit contribute less to literature than the Old Karelians who in spite of their illiteracy produced the “Kalevala.” It is even highly probable that all the great European epics were composed by illiterates and only later on recorded.“
5. Politics & Secularism
The history of Protestantism is the history of the rise of the state, the nation, as we know it today. With the authority of the Catholic Church removed, there was a power vacuum. Luther, very early on, found that he needed an authority to enforce orthodoxy, since once doctrinal authority was removed everyone ran with whatever idea seemed best to them, and he, of course, wanted to enforce his ideas - and he turned to the princes, the local political powers. He could not control them, however, and while sometimes lamenting it, eventually gave over even in theory the “right” of the state to, essentially, be the pope: to decide with authority and execute judgment upon religion matters and the church. The modern oppression of the Church by the state we owe to Luther and his half-willing, half-bewildered, surrender of the authority of Christendom to the princes - who of course used their power for their own, worldly, ends. The history of the world since the Reformation has shown us that every time the Church is not a power in her own right, as her own institutional entity, the state has sought - and often succeed - to control and subjugate her.
6. Divorce of Faith and Reason
For Luther, reason was the “devil’s whore.” Faith had nothing to do with rationality and everything to do with saying the words “I believe.” Why is Christianity - why is belief in God at all - perceived as backwards, stupid, illogical, and irrational? Why is “faith” generally understood to be an emotional experience that probably had nothing to do with facts or real life? The “great divorce” of faith and reason began with Luther’s doctrines of total depravity and sola fide: asserting that man’s postlapsarian nature has nothing good left in it and can accomplish nothing but evil, and that faith is true faith only as it is experienced in the subjective realm of the heart. As Chesterton pointed out, Luther rejected not just medieval philosophy, put in service of understanding the faith, but the Aristotelian philosophical principles which it had “baptized” and built upon. The distrust of the empirical sciences, the disavowal in large part of metaphysics, went hand in hand with the individualistic “emancipation” of science: i.e., scientists felt themselves free to posit their own spiritual and philosophic ideas built out of their observations.
7. Hyperpluralism
Luther himself quickly realized that what was “plain and clear” to him in Scripture was not so to many, many others. He famously wrote that anyone who couldn’t read Scripture and come to the Lutheran conclusions was blind or ignorant. And yet once the authority of the Church as the guardian of the truth faith, the final arbiter in disputes, was overthrown, belief splintered immediately and has kept going every since, resulting in the thousands upon thousands of contradicting Protestant denominations today. “Religious freedom” and “tolerance” were first thought out and applied to the warring Protestant sects (with, depending on the geography in question, the Catholics in the melee too) - and that came only slowly, and with much prejudice. The concept of a society that could be unified by something other than a common philosophic, ethical, and worshipful understanding took off of necessity in this divided and antagonistic atmosphere. What could fill that void? The modern state, with a new center of life: the economic life, rather than the spiritual life. Read more.
To sum up: Modernism
These issues are not disparate or unrelated, even if they seem so at first. All  combine and interrelate into one hefty problem. We can legitimately describe them as the tentacles of a single monstrous heresy: modernism. Pope Pius X gave the first thorough Catholic outline and condemnation of modernism in his watershed encyclical Pascendi Dominici Gregis. It’s a complex phenomenon that has evolved since 1907 when Pascendi was written, but its foundations are still subjectivism - and therefore moral relativism - and individualism (radical autonomy neglecting and/or denying natural law.) The Catholic encyclopedia offers this summary:
“(a) A spirit of complete emancipation, tending to weaken ecclesiastical authority; the emancipation of science, which must traverse every field of investigation without fear of conflict with the Church; the emancipation of the State, which should never be hampered by religious authority; the emancipation of the private conscience, whose inspirations must not be overridden by papal definitions or anathemas; the emancipation of the universal conscience, with which the Church should be ever in agreement; (b) A spirit of movement and change, with an inclination to a sweeping form of evolution such as abhors anything fixed and stationary; (c) A spirit of reconciliation among all men through the feelings of the heart. Many and varied also are the modernist dreams of an understanding between the different Christian religions, nay, even between religion and a species of atheism, and all on a basis of agreement that must be superior to mere doctrinal differences. [...]  Manifold are the degrees and shades of modernist doctrine on the question of our relations with God. But no real modernist keeps the Catholic notions of dogma intact. [...] In this way then we may define modernism as ‘the critique of our supernatural knowledge according to the false postulates of contemporary philosophy.’“
The obvious question is: Can we really lay all these problems at the feet of the Reformation?
it is an oversimplification to say merely, “the Protestant Reformation caused all these things” - though that doesn’t mean there’s not truth to it. But it’s not wrong to identify the “genealogy” of ideas. Inasmuch as the Reformation, as a watershed of rapid, large-scale, radical cultural change, separates the medieval and modern world, we can trace much of our society back to its impetus and influence; this, so far, is not too controversial of a historical claim. The difference here lies in that I am discussing the negative fallout, and calling bad much of what modern society - including Protestantism - calls good. In fact, there is - to modern ears - a surprising amount of scholarship on just this thesis. But of course it has largely been written by Catholics, and therefore, ignored. Particularly, the worldview which makes Protestantism possible is a large part of the foundation from which all the above problems, in the form we know them, has sprung, beginning with the elevating of the individual judgment, will, and feelings over and against the community. I discussed this some previously here.
Take a look at how historian Brad S. Gregory describes the legacy of the Reformation in the introduction to his book The Unintended Reformation: How a Religious Revolution Secularized Society:
“In getting from the early sixteenth to the early twenty-first century, this study develops the claim from my first book that “incompatible, deeply held, concretely expressed religious convictions paved the way to a secular society.” As we shall see, the Reformation’s influence on the eventual secularization of society was complex, largely indirect, far from immediate, and profoundly unintended. [...] the basic idea is that we will misgauge the character of the Western world today - in both its extraordinary pluralism and its hegemonic institutions - unless we see that and how its differentiated branches are the progeny of the Reformation era, including those branches that might seem unrelated, such as metaphysical assumptions, ethical theories, and economic behaviors. Different progeny have different lineages and occupy different places in the family tree, with complex and diverse relationships to the middle Ages with which they share a common ancestry.”
The switch from a communal, spiritual, unified civilization where the Church was a visible, hierarchical institution to an individualized, secular, hyperpluralistic society with no separate religious power to seriously combat the power of the state, began with the Reformation and has continued until today.
Conclusion: The fractured, relativistic state of Western civilization today began with the rejection of Christendom, and the replacing of its worldview with subjectivism and radical autonomy. The anti-sacramental - not just un-sacramental, but anti-sacramental - worldview of Protestantism, which replaced the objective reality of the sacraments, the physical channels of God’s grace, with interior emotion and elevated the individual conscience to final judge and juror of all truth, both instigated destructive tendencies in Western civilization and let loose many brewing heresies and destructive tendencies that Christendom had held in check.
The point of #500reasons this month has been to learn more in depth about the social consequences of the Reformation, to share what I’ve learned, and hopefully to challenge the complacent, widely accepted notion - common among Catholics as well as Protestants - that the Reformation was generally speaking a good or benevolent thing that has improved society. There should be much, much more healthy and vigorous argument than there actually is about the philosophical, social, political, and economic consequences of the ideas unleashed in the 1500s, with serious attention given to the Catholic case. Unfortunately, there is also a widespread tendency among Protestants to celebrate as good and noble the exact consequences which Catholics, and some other Protestants, mutually recognize as the great tragedy of the Protestant revolt: the splitting of Christendom into mutually exclusive, fundamentally contradictory, squabbling sects.
Ultimately, all arguments about doctrine between Catholics and Protestants will be futile until the issue of first premises - especially the fundamental authority issue, expressed today in individualism and relativism - is addressed. We live in one world, which has one real nature, which we believe to be radically different things. If what I call good, you call evil, and what I call evil, you call good, there can be no understanding, let alone dialogue, not to mention unity or stability - not until we have first settled what is good, and what is not.

PRIDE MONTH NONFICTION PICKS FOR YA
The Letter Q: Queer Writers' Notes to their Younger Selves by Sarah Moon (Editor),
If you received a letter from your older self, what do you think it would say? What do you wish it would say?
That the boy you were crushing on in History turns out to be gay too, and that you become boyfriends in college? That the bully who is making your life miserable will one day become so insignificant that you won't remember his name until he shows up at your book signing?
In this anthology, sixty-three award-winning authors such as Michael Cunningham, Amy Bloom, Jacqueline Woodson, Gregory Maguire, David Levithan, and Armistead Maupin make imaginative journeys into their pasts, telling their younger selves what they would have liked to know then about their lives as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgendered people. Through stories, in pictures, with bracing honesty, these are words of love and understanding, reasons to hold on for the better future ahead. They will tell you things about your favorite authors that you never knew before. And they will tell you about yourself.
For Colored Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Still Not Enough: Coming of Age, Coming Out, and Coming Home by Keith Boykin (Editor)
In 1974, playwright Ntozake Shange published For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf. The book would go on to inspire legions of women for decades and would later become the subject and title of a hugely popular movie in the fall of 2010. While the film was selling out movie theaters, young black gay men were literally committing suicide in the silence of their own communities.
When a young Rutgers University student named Tyler Clementi took his own life after a roommate secretly videotaped him in an intimate setting with another young man, syndicated columnist and author Dan Savage created a YouTube video with his partner Terry to inspire young people facing harassment. Their message, It Gets Better, turned into a popular movement, inspiring thousands of user-created videos on the Internet. Savage's project targeted people of all races, backgrounds and colors, but Boykin has created something special "for colored boys."
The new book, For Colored Boys, addresses longstanding issues of sexual abuse, suicide, HIV/AIDS, racism, and homophobia in the African American and Latino communities, and more specifically among young gay men of color. The book tells stories of real people coming of age, coming out, dealing with religion and spirituality, seeking love and relationships, finding their own identity in or out of the LGBT community, and creating their own sense of political empowerment. For Colored Boys is designed to educate and inspire those seeking to overcome their own obstacles in their own lives.
Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel
In this graphic memoir, Alison Bechdel charts her fraught relationship with her late father.
Distant and exacting, Bruce Bechdel was an English teacher and director of the town funeral home, which Alison and her family referred to as the Fun Home. It was not until college that Alison, who had recently come out as a lesbian, discovered that her father was also gay. A few weeks after this revelation, he was dead, leaving a legacy of mystery for his daughter to resolve.
All-girl camp. First love. First heartbreak. At once romantic and devastating, brutally honest and full of humor, this graphic-novel memoir is a debut of the rarest sort.
Maggie Thrash has spent basically every summer of her fifteen-year-old life at the one-hundred-year-old Camp Bellflower for Girls, set deep in the heart of Appalachia. She’s from Atlanta, she’s never kissed a guy, she’s into Backstreet Boys in a really deep way, and her long summer days are full of a pleasant, peaceful nothing . . . until one confounding moment. A split-second of innocent physical contact pulls Maggie into a gut-twisting love for an older, wiser, and most surprising of all (at least to Maggie), female counselor named Erin. But Camp Bellflower is an impossible place for a girl to fall in love with another girl, and Maggie’s savant-like proficiency at the camp’s rifle range is the only thing keeping her heart from exploding. When it seems as if Erin maybe feels the same way about Maggie, it’s too much for both Maggie and Camp Bellflower to handle, let alone to understand.
Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around: Forty Years of Movement Building with Barbara Smith by Alethia Jones (Editor), Virginia Eubanks (Goodreads Author) (Editor), Barbara Smith
As an organizer, writer, publisher, scholar-activist, and elected official, Barbara Smith has played key roles in multiple social justice movements, including Civil Rights, feminism, lesbian and gay liberation, anti-racism, and Black feminism. Her four decades of grassroots activism forged collaborations that introduced the idea that oppression must be fought on a variety of fronts simultaneously, including gender, race, class, and sexuality. By combining hard-to-find historical documents with new unpublished interviews with fellow activists, this book uncovers the deep roots of today's identity politics and intersectionality and serves as an essential primer for practicing solidarity and resistance.
Gay America: Struggle for Equality by Linas Alsenas (Goodreads Author), Linas Aisenas
Milestones of gay and lesbian life in the United States are brought together in the first-ever nonfiction book published specifically for teens.
Profusely illustrated with archival images, the groundbreaking Gay America reveals how gay men and women have lived, worked, and loved for the past 125 years. Gays and lesbians play a very prominent role in American life today, whether grabbing headlines over political gains, starring in and being the subject of movies and television shows, or filling the streets of nearly every major city each year to celebrate Gay Pride. However, this was not always the case, and this book charts their journey along with the history of the country.
First touching on colonial times, the book moves on to the Victorian period and beyond, including such historical milestones as the Roaring ’20s, the Kinsey study, the McCarthy witch hunts of the 1950s, the Beat generation, Stonewall, disco, AIDS, and present-day battles over gay marriage. Providing a sense of hope mixed with pride, author Linas Alsenas demonstrates how, within one century, gay women and men have gone from being socially invisible to becoming a political force to be reckoned with and proud members of the American public living openly and honestly.
Revolutionary Voices: A Multicultural Queer Youth Anthology by Amy Sonnie (Editor)
Invisible. Unheard. Alone. Chilling words, but apt to describe the isolation and alienation of queer youth. In silence and fear they move from childhood memories of intolerance or violence to the unknown, unmentored landscape of queer adulthood, their voices stilled or ignored. No longer. Revolutionary Voices celebrates the hues and harmonies of the future of queer society, offering a collection of experiences, ideas, dreams, manifestos, and fantasies expressed through prose, poetry, artwork, and performance pieces. This one-of-a-kind collection is an all-encompassing, far-reaching call to action that provides the groundwork for a new community where all members are recognized as critical components to our future society.
The Invisible Orientation: An Introduction to Asexuality by Julie Sondra Decker
What if you weren't sexually attracted to anyone?
A growing number of people are identifying as asexual. They aren't sexually attracted to anyone, and they consider it a sexual orientation—like gay, straight, or bisexual.
Asexuality is the invisible orientation. Most people believe that "everyone" wants sex, that "everyone" understands what it means to be attracted to other people, and that "everyone" wants to date and mate. But that's where asexual people are left out—they don't find other people sexually attractive, and if and when they say so, they are very rarely treated as though that's okay.
When an asexual person comes out, alarming reactions regularly follow; loved ones fear that an asexual person is sick, or psychologically warped, or suffering from abuse. Critics confront asexual people with accusations of following a fad, hiding homosexuality, or making excuses for romantic failures. And all of this contributes to a discouraging master narrative: there is no such thing as "asexual." Being an asexual person is a lie or an illness, and it needs to be fixed.
In The Invisible Orientation, Julie Sondra Decker outlines what asexuality is, counters misconceptions, provides resources, and puts asexual people's experiences in context as they move through a very sexualized world. It includes information for asexual people to help understand their orientation and what it means for their relationships, as well as tips and facts for those who want to understand their asexual friends and loved ones.
Beyond Magenta: Transgender Teens Speak Out by Susan Kuklin
A groundbreaking work of LGBT literature takes an honest look at the life, love, and struggles of transgender teens.
Author and photographer Susan Kuklin met and interviewed six transgender or gender-neutral young adults and used her considerable skills to represent them thoughtfully and respectfully before, during, and after their personal acknowledgment of gender preference. Portraits, family photographs, and candid images grace the pages, augmenting the emotional and physical journey each youth has taken. Each honest discussion and disclosure, whether joyful or heartbreaking, is completely different from the other because of family dynamics, living situations, gender, and the transition these teens make in recognition of their true selves.
Coming Out Under Fire: The History of Gay Men and Women in World War II by Allan Bérubé, Estelle B. Freedman (Foreword), John D'Emilio(Foreword)
During World War II, as the United States called on its citizens to serve in unprecedented numbers, the presence of gay Americans in the armed forces increasingly conflicted with the expanding antihomosexual policies and procedures of the military. In Coming Out Under Fire, Allan Berube examines in depth and detail these social and political confrontations--not as a story of how the military victimized homosexuals, but as a story of how a dynamic power relationship developed between gay citizens and their government, transforming them both. Drawing on GIs' wartime letters, extensive interviews with gay veterans, and declassified military documents, Berube; thoughtfully constructs a startling history of the two wars gay military men and women fought--one for America and another as homosexuals within the military.
Berube's book, the inspiration for the 1995 Peabody Award-winning documentary film of the same name, has become a classic since it was published in 1990, just three years prior to the controversial "don't ask, don't tell" policy, which has continued to serve as an uneasy compromise between gays and the military. With a new foreword by historians John D'Emilio and Estelle B. Freedman, this book remains a valuable contribution to the history of World War II, as well as to the ongoing debate regarding the role of gays in the U.S. military.
