He had sailed for the stars once before: upon the occasion of the death of Elessar, King of Gondor, Legolas had made his way to the sea and had boarded a vessel that would sail along the Straight Road, reaching and passing the edge of the world, flying straight for paradise and the stars.

Yet that voyage had failed. Instead of the Undying Lands, Legolas had found Earth. There, he had lingered, watching the years pass, until the weeks blurred and faded into the long, white, lonely expanse of the future. He could not recall what year it had been when he had arrived. No English, no knowledge of technology, no companions, no way to explain that he was not human---

It was lonely. The quiet almost swallowed him sometimes.

Perhaps that was why he had come to Star Fleet: because he had sailed for the stars and failed, and wished for a second chance. Surely there could be no better feeling than to be surrounded by non-humans after having been alone in his alienness for so long.

And so he found himself here. There were people to all sides of him, talking, running, looking occupied and professional. Legolas felt out of place - but no more so than he had these past two centuries. Smoothing the front of his uniform primly, he smiled, then did his best to maneuver himself out of the way of the passersby while avoiding a collision.
