College Grants and Scholarships for Women
Attending college is a crucial step in pursuing one's educational and career goals, providing opportunities for personal growth, intellectual development, and professional advancement. However, women face numerous challenges in accessing higher education, such as financial barriers, gender bias, and social expectations. In this article, we will discuss the importance of college education for women and explore the various types of college grants and scholarships available to help them overcome these challenges.
Types of College Grants and Scholarships for Women
One of the main challenges women face in accessing college education is the high cost of tuition and other expenses. Fortunately, there are many types of college grants and scholarships available specifically for women, which can help to reduce the financial burden of pursuing higher education. Some of the most common types of college grants and scholarships for women include:
Need-Based Grants
One of the primary obstacles for women pursuing higher education is the cost of tuition and other expenses. Need-based grants provide financial assistance to students who demonstrate significant financial need. These grants are awarded based on factors such as family income, assets, and household size. Examples of organizations that offer need-based grants to women include the American Association of University Women (AAUW), the Patsy Takemoto Mink Education Foundation, and the Women's Independence Scholarship Program (WISP).
These are grants that are awarded to women who demonstrate financial need. Need-based grants are often awarded by the federal government or by individual colleges and universities. Some of the most well-known need-based grants for women include the Federal Pell Grant and the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG).
Merit-Based Scholarships
Merit-based scholarships are awarded to students based on their academic achievements, such as high GPAs, test scores, and extracurricular activities. These scholarships recognize and reward students for their hard work and dedication to their studies. Examples of organizations that offer merit-based scholarships to women include the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), the National Women's Studies Association (NWSA), and the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM).
These are scholarships that are awarded based on academic or other achievements. Merit-based scholarships can be awarded by colleges and universities, private organizations, or government agencies. Some examples of merit-based scholarships for women include the Gates Millennium Scholars Program and the National Merit Scholarship.
Program-Specific Grants
Program-specific grants are designed to support students pursuing specific fields of study or careers. These grants often require applicants to demonstrate a strong interest or commitment to a particular field, such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) or healthcare. Examples of organizations that offer program-specific grants to women include the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN).
These are grants that are awarded to women who are pursuing specific fields of study or careers. Program-specific grants can be awarded by professional organizations, corporations, or government agencies. Some examples of program-specific grants for women include the Women Techmakers Scholars Program and the Society of Women Engineers Scholarship.
There are many organizations that offer college grants and scholarships for women. Some of the most well-known organizations include the American Association of University Women (AAUW), the Patsy Takemoto Mink Education Foundation, and the Women's Independence Scholarship Program (WISP).

How to Find and Apply for College Grants and Scholarships
Finding and applying for college grants and scholarships for women can be a daunting process, but there are some steps that women can take to increase their chances of success. Here are some tips for finding and applying for college grants and scholarships for women:
Research Eligibility Criteria and Application Deadlines
When searching for college grants and scholarships, it is essential to research the eligibility criteria and application deadlines carefully. Many organizations have specific requirements regarding academic achievement, financial need, residency, and other factors. It is crucial to read the instructions and guidelines thoroughly and ensure that all application materials are submitted on time.
Before applying for any college grant or scholarship, it's important to research the eligibility criteria and application deadlines carefully. Some grants and scholarships are only available to women who meet certain criteria, such as being a member of a particular ethnic group or pursuing a specific major. Other grants and scholarships may have strict application deadlines that must be met in order to be considered.
Create a Strong Application
To increase your chances of being awarded a college grant or scholarship, it is essential to create a strong application that highlights your achievements, goals, and commitment to your education. This includes writing a compelling personal statement, providing excellent letters of recommendation, and presenting a well-organized and polished application package.
Stand Out from Other Applicants
Competition for college grants and scholarships can be fierce, especially for highly sought-after programs. To stand out from other applicants, it is crucial to demonstrate your unique qualities and experiences that make you an exceptional candidate. This may include volunteer work, internships, leadership roles, research projects, or other activities that showcase your skills and interests.
Additional Resources for Women in College
In addition to college grants and scholarships, there are many other resources available to women in college. These resources can help you succeed academically and professionally, and connect you with other women who share your interests and goals.
Mentoring programs: Many colleges and universities offer mentoring programs for women, which pair students with experienced professionals in their field of study or career path. Mentors can provide guidance and support, and help you develop the skills you need to succeed.
Networking opportunities: Networking is an important part of building a successful career. There are many organizations and groups that offer networking opportunities for women, such as professional associations and alumni groups.
Career services: Most colleges and universities offer career services, which can help you explore career paths, build your resume, and prepare for job interviews. Career services staff can also help you connect with employers and find job openings.
Support groups: Many colleges and universities have support groups for women, which provide a safe and supportive space to discuss issues and challenges that are unique to women. These groups can help you build relationships with other women on campus, and provide a sense of community and belonging.
Here are some organizations and programs that offer additional resources for women in college:
The Women's College Coalition is a network of women's colleges that provides resources and support to women in higher education.
The National Association of Women MBAs is a professional organization for women in business school.
The Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program at the University of Michigan provides support and resources for women in STEM fields.
Conclusion
Attending college is a significant step in achieving one's educational and career goals, but it can also present significant financial and social barriers, especially for women.

Intersectionality
I’m writing this being inspired by the application of Google Women Techmakers’ International Women’s Day Global Summit 2019. Being an Outreachy participant, I’ve been pondering on this topic quite a lot lately. Allow me to tell you more about it.
What is intersectionality?
Tumblr media
Definition:
The interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, class, and gender as they apply to a given individual or group, regarded as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage.
So basically, the term “Intersectionality” describes the diverse and interconnected social groups. A simple example can be a university having students coming from different states and nations. Another example can be a special interest group having members from different geographic locations, speaking different languages, having different appearances, religious beliefs, genders and sexualities.
In today’s global world, it concerns all of us. And it is important to pay attention to it in order to create a respectful and comforting environment for others as well as for ourselves.
What does successfully promoting intersectionality in tech look like?
Intersectionality carries immense potential. And tech communities provide an outstanding example for this. Today computers and internet are present almost everywhere. People are getting more and more interested in learning about computers and how they can be used to make human lives better. These include the school students trying to teach their robocars how to not smash into the wall, computer scientists and mathematicians coming up with the smart algorithms, and also the guy at the local repairing shop who changes our phones’ broken displays. Of course, it is not a comprehensive list but the point is, we have all types of people in tech. And they all contribute to tech in their own ways. This is also why realizing the potential of intersectionality is even more important now.
I believe that promoting intersectionality is quite simple. Just let our diversities define our unity. Many of us are already working in this direction. But that is not enough. We all need to contribute to it in order to make everyone feel comfortable and safe to embrace their individualism.
Try to think of a place that has created such an environment for the individuals that they are assured of not being judged or mistreated for being different. Imagine how it can free them from the insecurities and discomfort we feel about being different. And how much respectful, focused, content and productive they would become at such a place. So that is how does it look - A place where you and I can walk in comfortably being ourselves :).
How can we recognize, promote, or celebrate intersectionality in tech?
I believe that it has to start with being more welcoming towards the newcomers. It can also start by not being ignorant towards people just because they are different than the majority. The leaders among us also have a crucial role to play in this by making sure that all members of the community are treated equally. And like what the famous author Robin Sharma says, “A leader does not need a title”. We all can take the lead and can contribute to promoting and celebrating intersectionality.
It is also about respecting and celebrating different cultures and traditions equally. It is about making people feel comfortable for who they are and giving them a sense of belonging as a part of the community. Just imagine how good would it make somebody  feel living on foreign land to receive greetings from their batchmates or colleagues on their native festivals :). It is just an example, there can be many other ways. Be creative!
Can you recognize the intersectionality in your environment now? Take a moment and acknowledge it. Because let’s admit that intersectionality makes our world a better place :).
