Breaking the Female-stereotype: Smriti Mandhana
No women's sport has ever received as much love in recent times as the Indian women's cricket team did this year; riding a wave of consecutive wins and qualifying to the semi-final in the ICC Women World Cup 2017. Among all the wonder women in the team, the most loving girl of the country, the apple of the eyes of millions of cricket enthusiasts, including me, is none other than Smriti Mandhana.
Tumblr media
Born on July 18, 1996, in Mumbai, Smriti Mandhana is the left-handed Indian batswoman who made her International debut in August 2014 against England at Wormsley Park. At an age where her friends are just starting to contemplate a career, Smriti Mandhana has already established herself as a pivot around which the Indian batting revolves. Her maturity, which has become a hallmark of her game, shines through as she talks about breaking 'female stereotype' and changing perceptions. Despite the failure in last few matches of the recent world cup, Mandhana's mindset and personal space is a reflection of how much things have changed since she made her international debut as a 16-year old in 2013. Professionalism, perseverance, and determination propelled her to the recent results and team bonding sessions have helped in breaking the ice.
Tumblr media
Not all starts are born with golden spoon in their mouth. Behind every rising start there lies a lot of hardship and a remarkably supportive family.  Young Mandhana was all of 9 when she was first picked in Maharashtra's Under-15 state side. But the confidence with which she would face up to bowlers older than her convinced her father that she had a future, even though he was not sure how to channelize it. Long work hours at a textile company, where he worked as a chemical distributor, left him little time on weekdays. But he put her under the watchful eyes of Anant Tambwekar, a junior state coach.
Tumblr media
At 11, Mandhana was fast-tracked into the Maharashtra Under-19s side, but an opportunity in the playing XI did not come about for the first two years. When she finally had the chance, she could not quite make the most of it. At 15, Mandhana had a big decision to make. Class X boards exam! She wanted to study science, but her mother dissuaded her because she knew she wouldn't be able to balance studies and cricket then. Mandhana scored three centuries and a double-century - an unbeaten 224 against Gujarat Under-19s in Vadodara - in the Inter-State Under-19s one- day competition. She followed that up with tall scores in the two Under-19 limited-overs tournaments which paved way for her inclusion in the Challenger Trophy. Against the country's best bowling crop, Mandhana clearly towered over the rest, leading the run-charts that brought her into the national reckoning.
At 15, Mandhana had most things going her way. But the quest for more cricket kept her edgy, even as she saw her peers in Mumbai and Bangalore train at big grounds on turf wickets. While moving out was not even an option, Mandhana built a concrete pitch with her savings to facilitate her batting sessions under Tambwekar's watch.
Tumblr media
All those sacrifices paid off when she earned her India call-up in 2013 after a number of senior players were rested for a short limited-overs series against Bangladesh in the wake of a disappointing World Cup campaign. But it was not until 2014 that she left her imprints. A call-up to the World T20 meant she had to skip her Class XII board exams; a tour of England later that year meant she would have had to miss a year and forego admissions into a Hotel Management course she wanted to enroll for.
In September 2016, Mandhana was signed up for a one-year deal with Brisbane Heat for the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL), and along with Harmanpreet Kaur, became one of the first two Indians to be signed up for the League.
Tumblr media
After a serious knee injury that almost quashed her World Cup dream she came back fought like a true warrior and guided India to a comfortable win over West Indies with a brilliant century. The world cup was what brought her to the limelight and apparently became the ‘National crush’ and her fan base has skyrocketed everywhere including various social media like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. She has become such a sensation among Indian youth because of her hard work, dedication and her wholesome passion. She is not only good on-field but also off-field too, you can’t miss her sarcasm in press conferences. She was asked, in a post match interview by a British journalist, if she thinks India can win the world cup tournament. “What? You don’t?” she replied and the whole audience stood amazed by her smarter response.
Tumblr media
Mandhana carries a bat in her kit. She drags it to training but does not use it. It is a bat that was autographed by Rahul Dravid for her older brother. He is also an aspiring cricketer who made it as far as Maharashtra Under-19s before the pursuit of academic excellence resulted in a promising career coming to a halt.
Tumblr media
Mandhana has received loads of appreciation for her batting skill. Some even related her to the ‘female version’ of Virender Sehwag. But on the contrary, Viru replied to this statement which carried a lot of sense. “She is the first version of Smriti,” he said “and is really special. Every Indian who loves sports will be proud of her. Wish her and the team the best” and hence appreciated her.
Sports stars like Smriti are the assets of this nation that we can feel proud of. We can, at least, say that as long as there are athletes like her in the team, the future of Indian cricket is in safe hand. We wish Mandhana retains her health, form, fame, and fortune as well till the end of her career.
