Literal Storms and Workstorm
July 27, 2023
Once again, my sleep was interrupted, but not without reason; it was because of the typhoon. I woke up in the middle of the night, startled by the loud sound of raindrops cascading onto our rooftop and the fierce gusts of wind sweeping through the entire area. Fortunately, I can now easily drift back to slumber, unlike before.
When morning arrived, I had to change my plans. I had to cancel my schedule of going to the office to get my laptop fixed due to the non-stop rain. Instead of preparing to go to the office, I took some extra time to lie down on my bed and engage in a pep talk with myself. I reminded myself that it was another morning with new battles to face and another day of challenges at work. I call it "hyping myself up," and it helps me to be mentally and physically prepared for the entire day.
Just as my plan to go to the office was canceled, the amount of work I had to deal with today was unexpected. It came like a typhoon, with a non-stop deluge of tasks to do and concerns to address. As a result, I was challenged to communicate more and make more independent decisions for the projects I am handling. I attempted to tackle everything on my own and trust my own judgment. However, it proved to be quite difficult!
There were always these nagging thoughts at the back of my mind: "What if my co-manager's decision is better than mine?", "What if their ideas yield better results?", "What if we fail because of my decisions?" Despite these doubts, I am still persevering, trying my best to ignore these thoughts and place trust in my own decision-making abilities.
Given the situation today, there are questions that keep popping up in my mind:
How can I be more confident in my own decisions?
How do I handle the feeling of guilt when our team faces failure?
How can I stop blaming myself for things that go wrong?
How do I avoid overthinking about past events?
How do I initiate small talk effectively?
How can I prevent awkwardness when discussing personal matters rather than work-related topics?
How can I become more observant in addressing other people's feelings and emotions?
I may not be able to answer these questions today, but I trust that in this journey, I will discover the answers as I get to know myself better.
Positive Talks:
- Don't stress yourself.
- If it's out of your control, then stop worrying about it too much.
- Stress is a daily part of life; learn how to handle it.
- Take time to know yourself and discover answers to your questions.
- Stay calm even when there is a storm.

Chapter 6: Badger Attack
“Riverclan will go next,” Creakstar meowed, flicking his tail, “With the water beast in the lake, we have been cautious. We now are forced to stick to the rivers. In good news, we have several new warriors. Wildcat, Metalclaw, Isletree, Monkeytail, Racingwind, Wispflame, Workstorm, Minileap, Eaglebeam, and Owlflight.” Creakstar took a deep breath after that, causing some cats to start laughing. Creakstar rolled his eyes, “As well as some new apprentices, Wishpaw, Snakepaw, and Talonpaw.”
“Windclan will go next,” Breezestar purred, “We’ve also got new warriors among us! Beaconlight, Raccoonstream, Squirrelsoul, Foxflame, Gorrilatrunk, Ottertail, Goldenpelt, Rabbitfoot, and Batwing! As well as some new apprentices, Rushpaw, Flypaw, and Leappaw. Prey is abundant, and we haven’t had to deal with the water beast yet.”
“Shadowclan will go next,” Moonstar meowed, “Although we don’t have any new warriors, we have new apprentices. Duskpaw, Dawnpaw, Mothpaw, Dunepaw, and Leechpaw. Prey is slightly scarce, but with new leaf approaching, prey should be plentiful soon.”
“Skyclan is next,” Twigstar growled, then turned to the other clan cats, “We also have no new warriors, but we have some new apprentices. Stripepaw, Spotpaw, Leapingpaw, and Forestpaw. We have plenty of prey to go around, for now at least.” He looked to Stormstar with a glare.
Stormstar sighed, then turned to the clan cats. “Thunderclan has lost one of our warriors, Gingerthorn, to the water beast. We nearly lost Runepaw to it as well, but one of our new apprentices saved her life. As for that, Tallheart, Nutflight, and Smokesoul have joined Thunderclan after Smokesoul saved Starkit. They are joined by Lionpaw, Jaypaw, and Greypaw, who saved Runepaw from the water beast. He’s not at this gathering due to the water beast mauling it.” Stormstar then turned to the Catclan cats, “I advise everyone to be wary when traveling along the lake. Gathering dismissed.”
Tallheart stood up and walked to the fallen tree. The “Water Beast” as they called it was gone, making it safe to travel. “Mind if I stay back a bit?” Tallheart asked Stormstar.
“Of course, just be back in time to get some rest,” Stormstar replied as he lead his clan back to camp.
Greypaw jerked awake, panting. He heard growling and stood up, limping to the medicine cat’s den entrance. He saw Finchreef and gulped. What was he doing back so earlier? He got his answer when he threw the body of a dead rabbit. Greypaw’s eyes widened as several badgers rushed into camp, tearing at the rabbit. Greypaw looked up. That wasn’t Finchreef…it was Spade! “This better work,” Spade growled as he threw in more dead rabbits, watching as more badgers raced in. Greypaw’s eyes widen when he saw one head for the nursery while others headed for the prey pile. Greypaw growled and raced to the nursery as fast as he could, hearing Lillith’s yowl.
“STAY BACK!!” Lillith hissed at the badgers approached her. Greypaw let out a yowl and lunged at the badger, landing on its back. He held on as the badger growled and shook violently, trying to throw Greypaw off. But the apprentice hung on, not daring to let go. “Greypaw! You’re injured, why are you fighting?!”
“Keeping you and the kits safe!” Greypaw replied, losing his focus long enough to get thrown off and against the rocky walls. Greypaw growled in pain as the badger turned to face him. He was cornered.
“GET THEM!” A yowl rang out. Finchreef, Snakepelt, Stormstar, and Braveheart raced into camp as Thorntalon exited the elders den and tackled a badger. It wasn’t too long before the rest of the clan raced in. Runepaw and Sagepaw worked together to corner a larger badger, keeping it from getting to the nursery. The badger snarled, charging at the two.
Sagepaw let out a hiss and lunged at the badger’s legs while Runepaw went for the throat. The badger tried to fight back, but it wasn’t too long before the badger fell, no longer moving as Runepaw suffocated it. “One down!” Sagepaw yowled.
“We need to keep going!” Runepaw hissed, racing alongside Sagepaw to get another badger killed.
Stormstar watched as a badger entered his den. Stormstar ran in and chased it out, watching as the badger ran into Sagepaw and Runepaw. Finchreef let out a low growl and slashed a badger across the face before sneaking into Stormstar’s den. “What are you doing Finchreef?” Stormstar asked, only to earn a large gash from his deputy.
“Shouldn’t have ignored Braveheart,” Finchreef snarled as he lunged at the leader.
Kryozice and Braveheart kicked away one of the smaller badgers. There was a cry of pain, and Braveheart turned to his side. Kryozice and Snakepelt tumbled down the side, both attacking one another. Leopardwish and Tigerrush nodded to each other and lunged at Thorntalon, pinning him down and slashing his throat. Braveheart’s eyes widened. What was going on?! “Stormstar!” He yowled as he raced to the leader’s den. He managed to get a look at Stormstar and Finchreef as the two fought. Braveheart snarled and ran to Finchreef. It all made sense! He killed Darkfur and Roostclaw! “MURDERER!” Braveheart yowled as he sank his claws into Finchreef’s pelt.
The older tom yowled in pain and slashed Braveheart’s ear. “You little pest! You’ve been a thorn in my side since day one!” Finchreef bit down on Braveheart’s neck, chocking him. He couldn’t do it for too long as Stormstar grabbed Finchreef and ripped him off Braveheart, throwing him against the den wall.
“You are a fool Finchreef,” Stormstar growled, “I knew of your plan long before Braveheart entered the clan. You never stood a chance.”
“LIAR!” Finchreef yowled, lunging at Stormstar.
The leader swiftly dodged it before slamming into the deputy’s side, “You and your followers are banished from Thunderclan. Leave, and never return!” Finchreef let out a snarl before racing out of the leader’s den, escaping camp. Snakepelt, who had been defeated by Kryozice, called for Leopardwish and Tigerrush to follow her as the ran after Finchreef.

#Legalweek19 Preview: How Technology Is Transforming Legal Practice
If you are reading this blog, then I don’t have to tell you: Little has more dramatically changed the practice of law than technology. For better or for worse, the technological advances of the past decade have irrevocably changed the legal industry and forever transformed the way we practice law.
This is one in a series of posts previewing the upcoming Legalweek/Legaltech conference, Jan. 28-31 in New York.
From e-discovery to cybersecurity, technology is integral to virtually everything that happens in law firms and legal departments of all sizes. A boom in legal tech startups has spawned a treasure trove of useful apps and software, with new products appearing on the market seemingly daily. Artificial intelligence is helping to streamline operations, offering lawyers new ways to do more with less.
Of course, with the good comes the bad. While technology greatly enhances our abilities to serve our clients, it also exposes us to new threats. Data breaches and cyber-attacks are at an all-time high, putting sensitive and confidential information at risk and threatening privacy. Never before has it been more crucial for law firms and legal departments to understand and secure their data or for lawyers to understands how technology affects them and their clients.
And then there is the ethical duty of technology competence!
Getting a handle on all this can be daunting. One way to do so is through the programs presented at legal technology conferences. The Legalweek conference starting next Tuesday, which includes the venerable Legaltech conference and the parallel LegalCIO conference, is a good opportunity for this. Programs will cover the current state of legal technology and a wide range of speakers will offer insights on how technological innovation is transforming the practice of law.
Here are just a few of the sessions during Legalweek that will address the current state of technology in the legal industry. (Descriptions are taken from the agenda.)

This panel of in-house legal experts will describe how technology has advanced their internal recruiting, hiring and promotion practices and external vendor selection with an eye toward improving diversity. We’ll also explore how ground-breaking analytical tools and metrics can help legal teams examine the demographic and ideological range of their outside counsel and how they can use technology—whether as a carrot or a stick—to promote more inclusive practices within their teams and across their outside service providers.

From Conversation to Conversion: Getting Lawyers to Use New Tools
Costs are exploding. Staffing is tight. Budgets need to be maintained. Whether you buy or build new legal knowledge and technology products, there is no guarantee of adoption. Email announcements remain on opened. The promise of food will not get associates to a conference room anymore. What is the answer? A panel of seasoned knowledge professionals will outline some of the techniques they use to drive, monitor, and assess digital adoption of new tools.

Lui/Monkeypaw/Monkeytail
Tumblr media
Lui is a brown and tan tom with golden eyes. One of three BBS members to leave Riverclan and join Skyclan.
He isn’t sure as to how he gained his cat form, but didn’t really mind. Although he trained as a Riverclan apprentice, he began to have growing feels for a Skyclan cat names Moonberry. He was very conflicted on falling in love as a cat, but soon gave in.
Only three moons after being named warrior, Monkeytail, Workstorm, and Eaglebeam left to join skyclan, becoming warriors there. Monkeytail would later father Sootkit, Peachkit, and Lightkit.

Enterprise Collaboration Platform Workstorm Expands into Corporate Legal
A company that earlier this year launched a platform to provide law firms with enterprise-grade workplace collaboration technology is today announcing its expansion of that technology to service corporate legal departments.
When it launched its platform last June, Workstorm initially focused on providing its technology to law firms. For firms, the platform enables secure communications and collaboration among partners, associates, staff, clients and opposing counsel, all from within a single platform.
Similarly for corporate legal departments, Workstorm is intended to serve as an all-in-one platform to conduct everyday business. It provides messaging, video conferencing, file sharing, screen sharing, email and more. It can integrate with a company’s existing email and document-management systems and can also provide custom integrations for enterprise customers.
“Collaboration technology is changing how organizations conduct business, and the legal industry has been underserved in this transformation,” says Raj Fernando, Workstorm chairman and CEO. “As we continue to address the needs of law firms, we’re excited to expand our platform offerings to include the requirements of corporate legal departments.”
In an interview earlier this year, Michele C.S. Lange, vice president, legal technology, at Workstorm, told me that Workstorm developed its product for the legal industry because no one had built a collaboration platform designed specifically for its needs.
“What was compelling to me in Workstorm’s vision was that the legal industry has yet to really adopt a collaboration platform because nothing has been built for them,” Lange said.
The same holds true for corporate legal departments. “There is a sizable strain put on legal operations teams and in-house counsel to communicate with many stakeholders across a wide array of matters,” Lange said. “Corporate legal departments require modern technology to help them manage risk and better serve the business units across their organizations.”
Within Workstorm, users work within a customizable dashboard to create Workspaces to organize their communications with individuals and teams around clients, deals or matters. Workstorm includes its own email client that lets users send and receive Microsoft Outlook and Office 365 email directly within the platform.
The platform includes a full range of proprietary security settings, internal and external communications permissions and a suite of integrated product offerings. Use cases within an organization include support for litigation, contracts, IP management, deal negotiations and any collaboration between law departments, their internal business clients, their law firms and other providers.
A free trial is available to legal departments at this link.
Founded in 2015, Workstorm is headquartered in Chicago.
