I Started my journey as an musician
I was 17 or 18 when I watched The webisite on Google. I found the best bits with my tape recorder during the re-run the next evening, so I could listen to those scenes again in my room. I wasn’t focused on playing guitar, but just how awesome and full of energy the movie was.
Years later, my friend handed me a copy of Pirates of the Caribbean. I instantly felt that same action in the music and was quite amazed by it. Luckily I have to Invest my teen years writing, recording, and producing rap and metal artists (or anyone who wanted to have a demo ^^ ).
So I get myself in the best position where I had the skills necessary to start playing around with orchestral compositions. Metal Gear Solid again option enforced that drive to learn more about music and guitar chords. I was active on many events for a long time, but now just use youtube and facebook as resources. that's started to pick up a real book about music theory. It’s fun to highly understand what I have been trying to do for a decade and a half, and learning all the things I did wrong.
I started traditional guitar lessons aged about 15 and by the age of 19, got to about Grade 5 while also playing higher level guitar like Daquin’s “jimi hendrix” . After a teen rebellion and a few years rest from lessons, I started playing the piano again at College and continued to play more challenging pieces (e.g.Beethoven’s “Pathetique Sonata”, Liszt’s “Liebestraume”) while also trying my hand (literally) at playing sections from famous Piano Concertos…Grieg, Tchaikovsky, Gershwin etc. I eventually gained a Grade 8 distinction in piano and Grade 5 theory and continued to push myself further with my music studies.
After College and gaining an Art degree, in an effort to improve my sight reading, I practiced about 4 hours a day, almost every day, for about 18 months, soaking up as many different styles of music as I could. I would rent books from the library and sight read them from cover to cover in an afternoon. Eventually I went on to teach piano, have done accompanying for Woodwind exams and local amateur dramatics, have been in Music festivals and been the Musical Director of a couple of pantomine shows as well as singing in various amateur choirs and Musical Societies. 22 years later and I am still teaching piano for a living but in recent years have become more interested in composing (which I’ve always dabbled in from time to time). That brings me right up to date here, at Guitaa, where I am enjoying some moderate success with my own music for the first time ever.
Thank you guitaa.com!

Noah's Ark on Broadway
Tumblr media Tumblr media
LISTEN NOW (8 minutes):
Listen Now as Francis Douglas tells of when Noah's Ark was featured on New York City's Broadway stage.
PODCAST TRANSCRIPT:
Today on Celebrate the Bible:
NOAH’S ARK on BROADWAY in 1896
You are not likely to find anything about Noah's Ark on New York City's famous Broadway today … but, at one time, it was the "toast of the town".
Noah's Ark, and the great world-wide flood as recorded in Genesis, is perhaps one of the most easily identifiable events in all of the Bible. The most interesting aspect of this episode is not the illusion itself, but the fact that it attracted so many people from New York City's secular population: from every-day working families, to the City's upper crust … all were thrilled with the experience.
Tumblr media
A few points of note:
Technical details of the illusion were featured in Scientific American magazine
The Olympia was the premiere entertainment showplace of the world
Biblical themes were very popular, with all NYC audiences at the Olympia
It was founded and built by famous Oscar Hammerstein
It was reported that audiences were left spellbound after each Noah’s Ark performance
It was so popular and well-received, that the highly respected science publication, Scientific American, devoted an entire page to this Biblically-themed entertainment attraction -- complete with stunning illustrations.
Let’s take a step-by-step look at the Noah’s Ark illusion. I will inter-space the steps throughout today’s presentation.
STEP ONE
Tumblr media
Hammerstein's Olympia Theater and Music Hall was once celebrated as the foremost entertainment venue in the entire world.
Located at 44th and Broadway in New York City, it was only two blocks from what is known today as Times Square. The main theater held 2,800-seats. And the building took up an entire city block.
STEP TWO
Tumblr media
The rooftop was just as famous as the theater and music hall. It had a 65-foot tall glass roof, and was illuminated with over 3,000 light bulbs. To provide electricity, there were four dynamos that generated 3,200 amps of power. These dynamos also powered a complete air circulation system, and pump, that brought refrigerated water from the basement to the rooftop area -- providing what was a very early version of air conditioning ... in 1896!
Tumblr media
Not to be outdone by any other venue, the rooftop also had trees, rocks, and even a stream that eventually led to a 40-foot lake. There were swans, ducks, and even South American monkeys.
And, while you were enjoying all of this, you could walk around the perimeter of the roof, and take in views of Central Park and neighboring New Jersey.
At the time, the cost of admission for everything, including entertainment, was only 50-cents! However, keep in mind, with the rate of inflation from 1896 to 2025, that same fifty cent admission price would be equivalent to roughly $15 to $20 today.
STEP FOUR
Tumblr media
The Scientific American publication was founded by inventor and publisher Rufus Porter in 1845. Contributors of note include Thomas Edison, Robert Goddard, Jonas Salk, Albert Einstein, and Linus Pauling -- just to name a few.
STEP FIVE: The SOLUTION
Tumblr media
The answer to the filling of the Ark with water is a simple one … the water funnel on the top of the Ark is attached to a hose that runs down through the support beams, then empties under the stage. The water never fills the Ark in the first place.
Other than taking creative license with a few details (for instance, the real ark was never filled with water), it was a wonderful opportunity for audience members to experience one of the great Biblical events on the grand Broadway stage.
Perhaps one day we'll see a revival of the Noah's Ark Illusion, or a variation on the theme. In the meantime, I'm glad to have been able to bring it to you with this Celebrate the Bible 250 podcast.
So, until we meet again, and for celebratethebible250, this is Francis Douglas.

If you would like me to give a presentation and small exhibit to your church group, school, or organization, on the History of the Christian Holy Bible in America, I’ll place contact information below as the 2026 Semiquincentennial America 250 year approaches.
I will be available for Southern New Jersey, Southeastern Pennsylvania, and Northern Delaware.

The world is fucking jarring, and this bitch is just tryna navigate through it. You’ll be surprised at the extent to which flowers and fucking relate to each other - and not just in a Georgia O’Keefe way. Expect to feel uncomfortable as an alternative perspective attempts to replace these repetitive narratives of power.
Amy De'Ath
Amy De’Ath’s most recent poetry publication is On My Love for Gender Abolition (New York: Capricious, 2016). She is Lecturer in Contemporary Literature, Culture and Theory at King’s College London, and is currently working on her first critical book, Unsociable Poetry: Antagonism and Abstraction in Contemporary Feminized Poetics. Her writing has been included in five anthologies and in literary publications in Canada, Canary Islands, Mexico, Nicaragua, Brazil, Cuba, and the UK. Helen is also part of the Devil's Dyke Network.
Honor Gavin
Honor Gavin takes a multi-platform approach to the creative and the critical, involving music, performance and collaborations with groups such as Theatrum Mundi. She is the author of a monograph on modernist literature and film, and of an exuberant, experimental novel, Midland (2014), which was shortlisted for the Gordon Burn Prize. Uncommon Building (2017), her most recent publication, documents a collaborative exercise in speculative fiction, a collective 'excavation' of a fictional building.
Jean-Marie Gleize and Abigail Lang (trans.)
Jean-Marie Gleize is the author of over twenty books in France. He published his first book (on Francis Ponge) in 1981, and became a professor at l’Université d’Aix-en-Provence as well as at the prestigious l’École normale supérieure de Lyon, where he would direct the Centre d’études poétiques from 1999 to 2009. In addition to his scholarly work on modern and contemporary French, Arabic, and American poetry, he would enter the first rank of French poets (or “post-poets,” as is sometimes said), aesthetically affiliated with peers such as Emmanuel Hocquard, Anne-Marie Albiach, and Claude Royet-Journoud. The first full-length translation into English of his writing, Tarnac, a preparatory act, is the most recent volume in a cycle of works published in France by Editions du Seuil’s series Fiction et Cie, created in 1974 by the poet Denis Roche. A seventh volume, titled Le Livre des cabanes, will be published in 2015, also by Seuil. The Sussex Poetry Festival Webisite:
https://sussexpofest.wordpress.com/
ACCESSIBILITY:
The Rose Hill is a wheelchair-accessible venue, but unfortunately does not (yet) have wheelchair-accessible toilets. There are, however, accessible toilets yards from the venue, inside The World's End pub on London Road. The festival will be seated. There is a bar in the venue, and an outside smoking area.
As part of this year's festival, we will be helping the Rose Hill to raise funds to install wheelchair-accessible toilets so that we can continue to develop our relationship with this wonderful community venue.
