Motorola Razr 2019 India Launch Date Set for March 16: Expected Price, Specifications
New Post has been published on https://magzoso.com/tech/motorola-razr-2019-india-launch-date-set-for-march-16-expected-price-specifications-2/
Motorola Razr 2019 India Launch Date Set for March 16: Expected Price, Specifications
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Motorola Razr 2019 will be launched in India on March 16, the company announced in a media invite. The phone was originally announced in November last year and went on sale in the US on February 6. It was exclusive to Verizon. The phone will now finally come to the Indian market and the pricing will be announced during the launch. The Razr is a modernised and reimagined version of the original Moto Razr V3 that came out in 2004.
Motorola Razr 2019 price in India (expected), launch details
To recall, the Motorola Razr 2019 was launched in the US at $1,500 (roughly Rs. 1,09,800). We can expect the Motorola Razr 2019 price in India to be similar to the US pricing, which means it will be available at well over a lakh in the country. For now, Lenovo-owned Motorola has not detailed where the smartphone will be launched, and thanks to the recent coronavirus cases in India, it might take a similar route to Xiaomi and Realme, and hold an online-only event for the launch.
Motorola Razr 2019 specifications
The Motorola Razr 2019 has, when unfolded, a 6.20-inch 876×2142 pixel screen. It has a secondary screen as well that can be accessed when the phone is folded. That screen 2.70-inches with a resolution of 800×600 pixels and an aspect ratio of 4:3. The Motorola Razr is powered by a mid-tier Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor, has 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of onboard storage. There is a 16-megapixel rear camera with an f/1.7 aperture and a pixel size of 1.22-micron, as well as a 5-megapixel front camera with f/2.0 aperture and a pixel size of 1.12-micron.
The 2019 Motorola Razr comes in only one storage variant which is 128GB and there is no expandable storage. For connectivity the device has Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/No, 3G, and 4G (with support for Band 40 used by some LTE networks in India), GPS, Bluetooth v5.00, and NFC. There is a USB Type-C port for charging.
When the device was launched, it received mixed reviews as it was powered by mid-tier specifications, an average at best camera, and the most striking part, the hinge. There is a visible gap between the screen and the hinge where it folds. The Motorola Razr was put through a durability test where it was found that the screen is very easily scratched and dust can enter the hinge which can cause problems while folding and unfolding the device.
It went through a full teardown as well by iFixit which gave it a score of 1, putting it among the worst on iFixit’s repairability index.

Best Android Phones in 2019, will you like to purchase?
After a sluggish few years in the Android world, 2019 has been a smash-hit for smartphone fans. We’ve already seen a few interesting phones with foldable designs, punch-hole displays, and as many as six cameras. These include the Samsung Galaxy S10, OnePlus 7 Pro, Huawei P30 Pro, Nokia 9 PureView, and many more.  But the year is still far from over. If you want to know more about the handsets you can look forward to, check out our list of the best upcoming Android phones arriving in 2019.
Best Android Phones in 2019
Pocophone F2  LG G8X  Google Pixel 4 series Huawei Mate 30 Pro  Motorola Razr foldable phone  Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 OnePlus 7T
1. Pocophone F2
Tumblr media
Xiaomi made headlines last year with the announcement of the Pocophone F1. The reason why was that the phone offered fantastic value for money. Starting at just 330 euros (~$370), it featured the Snapdragon 845 chipset, 6GB of RAM, a massive battery, and a dual-camera setup at the back.  This year, we expect the company to release its successor — the “Pocophone F2.” Nothing about the phone has been made official yet (including the name), but we expect it to follow the same recipe that made the F1 so successful. That means offering high-end specs at a price-point that undercuts the competition by a wide margin.  The Pocophone F2 is expected to offer a fantastic price-performance ratio.  We also hope the phone will come with NFC, a better design, and a few other things you can check out in our Pocophone F2 wishlist post.  The main problem is Xiaomi itself since it released the Redmi K20 Pro. The phone turned out to be the cheap Snapdragon 855 device Xiaomi fans have been waiting for. We don’t know where this leaves the Pocophone F2, but here’s hoping it’ll be a tweaked version for the global market.  Launch ETA: Sometime in 2019
LG G8X
Tumblr media
What we thought was the next LG V-series smartphone might turn out to be the rumored LG G8Xinstead.  Tipped to be a revamp of the lukewarm LG G8, the G8X reportedly features a dual rear camera setup, waterdrop notch, headphone jack, and an extra hardware button. Expected features include wireless charging, quad DAC audio, and some level of water and dust resistance.  We don’t see a rear or front fingerprint sensor, which means the phone might offer an in-display fingerprint sensor. Also not seen is the G8’s Z Camera (3D ToF camera). The sensor-enabled features like 3D face unlock, hand ID, and advanced gesture controls. That said, we don’t know if many people will notice or care — our own Eric Zeman though hand ID and gesture controls were “slow and unreliable” in his G8 review.  LG didn’t confirm or deny the G8X’s existence but hinted there are some truths to the leaks. LG will hold an event during IFA 2019 in Germany, so we should learn more then.  Launch date: September
3. Google Pixel 4 series
Tumblr media
The Google Pixel 4 series, which will likely consist of the Google Pixel 4 and 4 XL, is expected to make its debut in October. As we’re still months away from their release, Google hasn’t revealed much information. However, it has confirmed the phones exist and even showed off the rear design and camera after tweeting out an official picture in response to leaks and renders.  Google also confirmed two Pixel 4 features: Motion Sense and Face Unlock. Motion Sense uses the phone’s onboard Soli motion-sensing radar to enable hand gestures. That means you can wave your hand across the front of the Pixel 4 to skip songs, snooze alarms, and silence incoming calls, with additional functions arriving later.  Face Unlock also uses Soli, this time to turn on the Pixel 4’s face unlock sensors. Combined with software algorithms, the Pixel 4 supposedly opens as soon as you pick it up. Face Unlock works in almost any orientation and can also be used to authenticate payments and apps.  Thanks to a massive spec dump, we have a better idea of what to expect with the Pixel 4 on paper. Whereas the Pixel 4 reportedly features a 5.7-inch Full HD+ display, the Pixel 4 XL reportedly sports a 6.3-inch Quad HD+ display. Both AMOLED displays will have a 90Hz refresh rate, according to leaks.  Other rumored specs include a 2,800mAh battery for the Pixel 4, a 3,700mAh battery for the Pixel 4 XL, 6GB of RAM, at least 64GB of storage, the Snapdragon 855 chipset, stereo speakers, and dual rear 12MP and 16MP cameras. Finally, the Pixel 4 phones are expected to run Android Q.  Launch ETA: October
Huawei Mate 30 Pro
Tumblr media
Huawei announced the P30 Pro in March, which means the next flagship from the company to expect is the Mate 30 Pro. Huawei confirmed the Mate 30 Pro will launch in September or October.  Leaks have been few and small, but what we’ve heard so far sounds very promising. According to rumors, the Mate 30 Pro will feature a 6.71-inch AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate. The phone will also reportedly feature the Kirin 985 processor, Balong 5000 modem for 5G connectivity, two 40MP rear cameras with a third telephoto sensor, a 4,200mAh battery, and fast wired and wireless charging.  We also expect improvements to the in-display fingerprint sensor and reverse wireless charging, along with Android Q underneath EMUI 10.  There’s a good chance the phone will feature a price bump relative to the Mate 20 Pro, with the base storage variant of the phone likely costing more than 1,000 euros (~$1,115). Then again, the company has also released a non-Pro Mate phone in recent years, so hopefully, that offers a similar core experience at a cheaper price.  Launch ETA: September or October
MotorolaRazrfoldable phone
Tumblr media
It looks like Motorola plans on bringing back the Razr series. The company is reportedly working on a foldable phone, which is expected to launch sometime this year. An exact date isn’t known, but the company said it plans to enter the market around the same time as its competitors. Samsung and Huawei have already revealed their foldable phones (although they aren’t available to buy), so Motorola can’t be far behind.  The Motorola Razr foldable phone (the name hasn’t been confirmed yet) reportedly folds vertically and features two displays. Based on a previous patent filing and firmware digging, it features a small display on the outside when closed and a larger display when opened.  Specs-wise rumors state that it will be a mid-range device sporting the Snapdragon 710 chipset, up to 6GB of RAM, and a 2,730mAh battery. It may cost as much as $1,500, but we won’t know for sure until it’s officially released. In the U.S., it may be Verizon-exclusive.  Launch ETA: Sometime in 2019
Xiaomi Mi Mix 4
Tumblr media
Xiaomi has generally launched an all-new Mi Mix device in the second half of the year, with the Mi Mix 3 launching in October 2018 and the Mi Mix 2 being unveiled in September 2017.  Aside from Xiaomi’s traditional timing, confirmation of the Mi Mix 4 reportedly came via a Weibo post from company executive Wang Teng. The now-deleted post apparently noted that the new Xiaomi phone will have a camera that’s better than Samsung’s 64MP sensor. Staying with the camera experience, a Xiaomi patent filing reveals the company is working on a periscope camera. Furthermore, the source of the news says it’s not out of the question for the tech to come to the Mi Mix series. In any event, we’re expecting the Snapdragon 855 chipset and a rather slick design (will it be a slider again?).  Launch ETA: Sometime in 2019
OnePlus 7T
Tumblr media
There haven’t been any significant rumors or leaks regarding a OnePlus 7T, but past years suggest that this could be the case. OnePlus has traditionally launched a T-series phone in the second half of the year, going all the way back to the OnePlus 3T in 2016.  This schedule might be in question after the company launched the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro back in May — bucking the trend of one phone for each half of the year. But what if the company does indeed go ahead with a T series entry in 2019?  It’s possible OnePlus will offer a OnePlus 7T and a OnePlus 7T Pro if it decides to issue new devices in the second half of the year. As for desired features, we’d love to see both variants offer camera quality on par with the likes of Samsung and Huawei, for starters.  A standard OnePlus 7T should also offer a more versatile rear camera setup, as opposed to simply adding a 5MP depth sensor. As for a OnePlus 7T Pro? We’d like to see a proper IP rating, wireless charging, and improved endurance.  Interestingly, OnePlus confirmed it’ll release a second 5G smartphone by the end of 2019. Even better, the phone will be available globally instead of in a few regions. Maybe one of the rumors 7T devices might be a global 5G phone.  Launch ETA: Sometime in late 2019
Android phones yet to be released
The handsets below have already been announced, but since they haven’t gone on sale yet we’re still including them on our list of the best upcoming Android phones.
8. Samsung Galaxy Fold
Tumblr media
Announced in February, the Galaxy Fold is Samsung’s first foldable device. It opens and closes like a book and features a 4.6-inch display on the outside and a 7.3-inch screen on the inside. The phone has six cameras on board, is powered by the Snapdragon 855 chipset, and is 5G ready. It was initially scheduled to go on sale on April 26, but Samsung pushed back the launch date due to problems with the phone’s display.  Thankfully, Samsung seemingly resolved those issues and will re-launch the Galaxy Fold in September. However, the phone’s prospects are a bit murkier this time around — T-Mobile confirmed it will not carry the Galaxy Fold, with an AT&T launch still up in the air.
Huawei Mate X
Tumblr media
Huawei’s rival to the Galaxy Fold made its debut at MWC 2019. It features a single display that’s wrapped around the outside of the device and measures 8-inches when in tablet mode. The 5G phone is powered by the Kirin 980 chipset, sports a rear triple-camera setup, and has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.  However, Huawei has yet to pin down a launch date. The company confirmed the Mate X will launch sometime between September and November, even though a report pegged a pre-November as “unlikely.” Whenever the phone launches, the 8GB/512GB version will retail for a staggering 2,299 euros (~$2,550). The phone isn’t expected to launch in the U.S. Read the full article

Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold 2 will be Released in the Fourth Quarter
Galaxy Z Fold 3 is expected to debut in the second half of the year. In addition to improvements in performance and foldable screen technology, Galaxy Z Fold 3 will also feature an under-screen camera and an under-screen forward view on the large internal screen. It’s worth noting that, according to some sources, Xiaomi’s next-generation fold-screen flagship, the Mix Fold 2 (working name),…

Some features of Android Q 10 Review
Of course, the popularity of smartphones leads the consumer electronics segment. As known, the idea of combining the functionality of a cell phone and a personal digital assistant appeared in the early 1990s. In 1992, IBM introduced the first IBM Simon model. Of course, the functionality, Smartphone Storage, camera, screen, and performance of modern models are radically different from their prototype. Today, the market offers a huge range of smartphones in a wide price range. For example, companies already offer Projector Mobile Phones with a projector function, including the very popular Blackview MAX 1 Projector Mobile Phone. But OS remains one of the main criteria when choosing a model. Basically, modern models use: - Android; - Apple iOS; - Windows Phone; - Symbian. As known, Microsoft in December 2019 stops supporting the latest Windows 10 Mobile. The Finnish HMD Global also abandoned the Symbian platform, releasing the latest Delight 1.7 firmware for the Nokia E7, N8 and 808 PureView. The share of other operating systems, including Bada, Palm OS, Open WebOS, Maemo, etc. is insignificant. Therefore, according to many experts, in the coming years, the main competition will continue between Android and Apple iOS. But today, a wider range of applications and a lower price with the same functionality provide an advantage for Android devices. Most modern models from Samsung, HTC, Motorola and almost all Chinese companies use Android. Of course, excellent versatility pretty much provides this popularity. Today, a huge number of gadgets, including watches, bicycles and even cars use the Android OS.
Pros & Cons
Pros: - open-source software (OSS) encourages the development of new apps that are available on Google Play. Today, the service offers more than 1.5 million programs for paid and free downloads; - one account provides access to all Google services, many of which are integrated among themselves; - convenient synchronization with other devices through wireless modules or a USB cable without additional software; - convenient and intuitive controls; - high performance and efficient multitasking; - a huge selection of manufacturers; - a wide range of Android models. Cons: - high vulnerability to hacker attacks and software viruses; - high battery requirements due to high energy consumption; - a lot of low-quality software in free apps; - complex settings due to their huge number. Over the past 10 years, many Android versions have been developed. But modern models mainly use versions from 2013 and later. Today, the share of models with Gingerbread (Android 2.3), Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0), Jelly Bean (Android 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3) does not exceed several percent. Other versions, including KitKat (4.4, 2013), Lollipop (5.0, 2014 and 5.1, 2015), Marshmallow (8.0, 2015), Nougat (7.0 and 7.1, 2016), Oreo (8.0 and 8.1, 2017) and Pie (9.1, 2018) are distributed approximately evenly. The latest Android Q (or Android 10) today is available only to owners of Pixel smartphones of all generations.
Improved features of Android 10
This list includes: Screenshot Holding the power button activates a pop-up menu with options for restart, shut down, screenshot and emergency SOS. Native 5G support As known, more than 20 mobile operators have promised 5G support until the end of 2019; Сamera In Android 10, apps can request depth data (JPEG + XMP metadata + depth and confidence map) to create, for example, 3D images. Today some cameras of smartphones create them in portrait mode. Apparently, this will greatly simplify photo editing. Live Captions It transforms absolutely any audio into text in real time. According to Google, this option is implemented directly on the device and can work without an Internet connection. Live captioning allow you to watch video without sound. Bubbles function Android 10 offers a new Bubbles feature to display messages from the Message app. It also supports Facebook Messenger chatting. As before, Smart Reply offers different answers to incoming messages. Additionally, new version can redirect the user to various apps via direct links from notifications. Confidentiality, updates and app time limit Android 10 contains a section in the settings menu with all the protection features. For example, the system provides protection against unauthorized surveillance of a person and against procrastination in the new Focus Mode, which ensures app shutdown. Dark theme As in the 13th version of iOS, Android 10 plans to use a dark theme. Strictly speaking, Google has already used the dark design in Android 4.0. Now it will provide energy savings for models with OLED screens. By the way, the test from the PhoneArena portal showed savings in this mode of up to 50% charge. The option will be activated manually or when the power mode is turned on.
Improved gesture control and support for display cutouts
As known, Android has long been experimenting in this direction. Unfortunately, while it was inferior to iOS in terms of convenience. Android Q works similarly to iPhone X. For example, swiping left returns the previous app, and swiping up and holding activates the list of running applications. A virtual navigation bar allows you to swipe open apps in any direction. In addition, the system offers a simple and convenient setup, which includes only 5 steps: - "Settings" logo; - scrol down the menu options while until "System"; - "Gestures selection" in the menu; - "System Navigation option"; - selection of the older 3-button navigation, the more recent 2-button navigation, or the new "Gesture Navigation". But the final conclusion about the convenience of the improved option is still premature today. Display cutouts As known, in 2017 Apple introduced the iPhone X with "notch", which maximized the screen working area. Usually, the upper part contains sensors, a speaker, a front camera lens, etc. In this case, they are all included in notch. In fact, the display "surrounds" the notch, increasing the screen working area without increasing its diagonal. As a rule, the companies use the freed area to display system icons, notifications, hours and battery power. Being next to notch, they do not occupy space on the main part of the screen. Android Q on the Pixel 3 XL smartphone demonstrated the correct operation of this option. In addition, Android 10 will natively support folding smartphones with the help of an emulator of bendable smartphones. This feature supports virtual 7.3 / 4.6-inch displays in the open / folded state, or 8 / 6.6 inches, respectively.
Other
Desktop mode This popular mode will provide the use of a smartphone as a PC when connecting a monitor, keyboard and mouse. As known, in 2017 Samsung first introduced DeX (DEsktop eXperience) technology to solve this problem. But the technology required a special docking station, which the company offered for $ 150. Its performance provided typing, viewing content, and working in a browser. Moreover, the smartphone even supported working with multiple open windows in multitasking mode. Unfortunately, Samsung did not begin to develop this direction. Control playback and volume Android 10 has changed the logic for controlling media playback and volume. The displayed mini-player in the status bar works with all media files. Above the player’s window are available icons for wireless interfaces and sound output to external wireless speakers. The volume control now provides quick settings for each sound source using the standard menu. 3D face recognition Of course, many manufacturers of Android devices are experimenting with face recognition technology, but there is still no full-fledged analogue to Apple Face ID. As known, it provides a scanning face when unlocking device. Apple Face ID combined the Time of Flight (ToF) sensor, IR illuminator, dot projector, alongside other sensors to create a secure biometric phone unlocking system. Of course, Google could not stay away. Native support for 3D face recognition in Android 10 promises to significantly advance this technology. Probably final build of Android Q will be able to offer this option. Sensor Privacy Sensor Privacy in Advanced Airplane mode disables all sensors in the device;
Models with Android 10 (Q) Support
Initially, only the Google Pixel Series devices will support Android 10. In the future, a list of planned models will include: - Pixel и Pixel XL; - Pixel 2 и Pixel 2 XL; - ASUS ZenFone 5Z; - Pixel 3/3a и Pixel 3 XL/3a XL; - Essential PH-1; - Nokia 8.1; - Huawei Mate 20 Pro; - LG G8 ThinQ; - OnePlus 6/6T ; - OPPO Reno; - Realme 3 Pro; - Sony Xperia XZ3; - Tecno Spark 3 Pro; - Vivo X27; - Vivo NEX S; - Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G; - Vivo NEX A; - Xiaomi Mi 9.
Conclusion
Pros: - many new features; - better notification management; - significantly improved privacy settings. Cons: - gestures do not open the apps manager; - updates require a lot of time on most models. In general, Android 10 is showing real progress and moving in the right direction. This video demonstrates some of the new features of Android Q. Read the full article

After months of hype, Samsung wins the race to unfold a pricey new phone category
After months of hype, yesterday Samsung released the world’s first folding phone, the Galaxy Fold.
The Fold got mixed reviews from early users. But early reactions aren’t always a good litmus test when it comes to consumer tech.
The frontier of foldables
The Fold features several eye-popping numbers: The phone has 2 touchscreens, 6 cameras, a 7.3-inch display… and a $1,980 price tag (even more than Apple’s XS-ive starting iPhone price of $1,099).
Rival phonemakers have “teased” their own foldable prototypes for months -- Xiaomi and Lenovo both leaked their prototypes, and Huawei claims to be on track to release its foldable this year.
But now that Samsung has won the race to get a product to market, the next big question is obvious: Will consumers pay $2k for a phone that is also a tablet?
Now, we wait to see how consumer tastes unfold
Many people praised the phone’s features (the phone can run 3 apps simultaneously on its larger screen), but others ridiculed the phone’s massive price tag and unusual design.
But even though consumers often don’t like change at first, the market has a short memory: Apple’s Airpods were widely mocked when released 2 years ago, but now they’re a massive success that many users can’t imagine living without.
Despite the flurry of angsty tweets, Samsung could have the last laugh as the future unfolds.

Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 in for review
Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 in for review
The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 has landed at HQ and we’ve got an unboxing for you. It comes with a case for the rear glass panel, complete with an adjustable kickstand, a USB-C to 3.5mm dongle, a 67W charger, and a cable. The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is among the thinnest foldables around. It measures 5.4mm when unfolded, and 11.2mm when folded. Compare that to the Galaxy Z Fold4’s 6.3mm/15.8mm, and the Xiaomi…

9 fun drones you can control with your smartphone
This post was originally published on our sister site DroneRush.com
Traditional RC toys rely on dedicated controllers to operate, but modern technology put an extremely capable smart device in your pocket and many manufacturers look to use it for their new toys. I’m being vague, I refer to quadcopter style drones you can control with your smartphone or tablet.
Higher-end drones still rely on a dedicated remote for actual flight controls, but many toy class units fly using nothing more than an app and a WiFi or Bluetooth connection. Let’s take a look at some of the best on the market today.
We will regularly update this post with new and exciting drones that you can control with your phone. This month we added the new DJI Mavic Air. This quadcopter may just be drone of the year.

Must read: top 10 Android stories
It was a busy week in the Android world. We discussed Sundar Pichai's AI/fire comparison, why Xiaomi needs to abide by the rules of Android, and we reviewed DJI's Osmo Mobile 2. We also learned that the …
New: DJI Mavic Air
I’m sure you’ve heard that DJI has announced the new Mavic Air, a compact, folding drone that packs the best of the Mavic Pro and Spark into one. Well, that goes for flying the quadcopter by hand gestures and using the mobile application. We’ll be bringing you plenty more coverage of this new drone soon, for now, if you like DJI products, were looking for a portable option and wondering which is the best, the Mavic Air is probably the answer.
DJI Mavic Air announced DJI Mavic Air hands-on in New York
The Mavic Air is on pre-order now for $799 alone, grab the Fly More combo for $999. Hit the link below to see the announcement and find buying options.
Check out the DJI Mavic Air
DJI Mavic Pro
Also seen in our Best drones list, Best camera drones, Best professional drones and DJI Drones guide
We hesitated to add this here, the Mavic Pro, as with other DJI drones that can be controlled via smartphone, benefit greatly using the controller and smartphone in combination. Thing is, there is a WiFi mode that allows you to take control using just your phone. Range is limited, capabilities are not all utilized, but you can do it. Take the control method out of the equation and I can do nothing more than gush at how great of a drone you are getting here; the compact, folding design is unrivaled today, particularly in this capable of a 4K video recording drone with excellent autonomous features.
Check out the DJI Mavic Pro for $818 as the base package, $1091 in the Fly More bundle from Amazon today. (Watch for sales as low as $818 and $1150. Regular price $999 and $1299.)
Buy the DJI Mavic Pro
DJI Spark
Also seen in our Best drone and Best selfie drones lists
Forget your smartphone, control this drone with your bare hands! That’s right, the new DJI Spark was designed for the maximum in ease of use, where a controller can be cumbersome to transport and a smart phone can be used, but maybe you want to save the battery, you can use hand gestures to control the quadcopter. From start to finish, you can fly this drone, capture some aerial selfies and land it right back in your hand.
If you own a larger smartphone, you’ll find it is larger than this drone, it’s that small. I mean, the fuselage is small, there’s still propeller arms and the folding propellers to deal with, but hey, it’s still one of the more portable flying machines around.
Grab the DJI Spark for $370 for the drone alone, a Fly More bundle will run $598. (Watch for deals as low as $370 and $598. Regular price $499 and $699.)
Buy the DJI Spark
Parrot Bebop 2
Also seen in our Best drone under $500 list, Best beginner drones and Parrot drones guide
Parrot is an interesting little company with some great ideas and they look to create a premium experience on most things they do. This sometimes means premium hardware, and sometimes premium experiences through software or features. In the case of their drones, most are able to be flown entirely using just your smartphone. They still offer a controller if you need more, but more than just the basics are only an app away.
The Bebop 2 is one of the newest drones from Parrot, a feature packed quadcopter with a number of autonomous flying modes and a fairly capable camera.
Your smartphone acts as controller as well as FPV viewer for the Bebop 2, using their app, called FreeFlight 3, you’ll get the basics for free, then fork over some cash via in-app-payments to unlock advanced flying modes.
The Parrot Bebop 2 alone is $285, but spend $420 to get the whole package with FPV goggles, dedicated controller and more.
Buy the Parrot Bebop 2
Hubsan X4 H501S Pro
Also seen in our Hubsan drones guide
We spent some time with Hubsan at CES behind closed doors, they have some interesting and fun stuff in the pipeline, but next to hit the market will be the new Pro version of the brushless H501S. Despite using their advanced controller with FPV video screen, you can actually fly this drone, as with many other Hubsan drones, using just the app.
They have a special tiny controller in the works that seems little more than a phone dock, which, to be fair, is basically what it is. Put your phone to use on a number of Hubsan drones, including the X4 H501S Pro. or the lesser expensive X4 H501S Brushless for $197 on Amazon today.
Buy the Hubsan H501S
GDU O2
Only recently announced, and possibly not yet shipping by the time you read this, the new GDU O2 is a compact machine that is one of the most portable drones on the market today. We were at the official unveiling of this drone and got to go hands-on with it at InterDrone 2017, but we have not yet flown it ourselves. That comes next. Instead of folding down, like many portable machines today, the propeller arms slide into the body, keeping them safe and getting them out of the way.
Better than just sliding the propeller arms out of the way, the drone snaps directly to the remote control for transport. This protects all the important bits. We’re pretty impressed to say the least.
You can order the GDU O2 for $732 today. For those that can fly beyond line of sight, stay tuned for a Pro version coming soon with greater range connectivity.
Buy the GDU O2
DBPower UDI 818A
Also seen in our Cheap drones guide
Compatible with VR goggles, this is another FPV flyer. Offering up remote control or control by smartphone, the DBPower UDI U818A is a little less capable than the U842, but offers a smoother flight for better aerial footage. The live video stream works up to 100 feet away and can be viewed on your smartphone, just place your phone in the holder on the remote control for easy usage.
Check out the DBPower UDI U818A for $120 on Amazon today. (We’ve seen the price fluctuating as high as $140, be patient, it should come back down to as low as $80.)
BUY THE DBPOWER UDI U818A
Parrot MiniDrone rolling spider
Also seen in our Best drones for kids and Parrot drones guide
It’s a car, nope, it’s a quadcopter? Parrot is not offering both in one device, but the MiniDrone Rolling Spider has large wheels that can spin along, adding a new level of fun and safety to indoor flying. These are not powered wheels, but they do protect the drone from crashing, allow you to scoot along the floor when there is not enough battery life left to take off, and have fun ‘crawling’ up walls when there is power.
Equipped with a small camera, this small drone is controlled by smartphone or tablet and can be yours for $60 on Amazon. (We’ve seen it as low as $40 and refurbished units are only $30.
BUY THE PARROT MINDRONE SPIDER
Sphero BB-8
Not on any other list, but it’s Star Wars!
What is a drone? The military builds them as highly capable unmanned aircraft for reconnaissance and more, the toy store says it’s a flying multi-rotor remote controlled toy, but if we are to be fairly exact about it, we’re looking at an unmanned craft of pretty much any sort. Under the water, in the air or across the ground, whether autonomous or remote controlled, there are many types of drones, and within these guidelines, Sphero’s BB-8 has got to be one of our favorite.
Control BB-8 with your smartphone, roll along the ground and enjoy some fun sound effects, augmented reality stories and more. Check out our initial thoughts on this toy over on Android Authority. I might add that Edgar, who wrote the post, got his hands on this droid at CES 2016. We’re serious fans around here.
Check out Sphero BB-8 for $140 on Amazon today.
Buy Sphero BB-8
Special considerations – phone and remote, plus VR
While there are few drones that accept your smartphone as the only input method, don’t forget that you can enhance or augment most flying experiences by adding your phone or tablet into the mix. DJI is a primary player in this setup, most of their drones are made to be control by remote, but then use your phone as FPV video screen.
Our favorite DJI Mavic Pro is a primary example of this, your connected phone displays what the camera on the drone sees. Further, you can control the camera from the phone and you initiate most advanced flying modes from the app on your mobile device.
In this regard, there are many, many drones that you can control, at least in part, using your smartphone.
In terms of VR capabilities with your smartphone and your drone, head on over to our partner site VRSource for David Imel’s take on the best VR drones.
While you’re looking into VR, and flying by phone, why not also check out the DJI Goggles. This new headset can connect to your DJI Mavic Pro, the new DJI Spark and has an HDMI input, so it can act as display for way more than just your drone.
DJI Goggles review
Wrap-up
That sums up some of the best drones you can fly using your smartphone or tablet. There are many, but mostly just toy-class units that you can control completely via mobile device, however, keep your phone charged, it is a valuable tool for most drones even if you can’t directly control them.
What is your favorite drone to fly using just your Android phone or tablet?
