🌴 A lovely moment of quiet and calm. 🌴 Justin and I recently got back from an unscheduled trip to New Port Richey Florida. J’s mom called us saying that his Grandma had a bad fall getting out of bed that resulted in a broken vertebrae and a swollen knee the size of a grapefruit. We immediately got our MN obligations covered and two days later were on a plane headed to FL. It was a super intense week and every emotion felt but I’m relieved to say that his Grandma is healing and doing much better. ❤️ It was stressful but we did get some good family time which was great. We ate dinner together every night and went swimming in the pool. We even snorkeled in the ocean and saw sting rays and giant crabs. 🌊 I hid a couple Knit Wits thus checking another state off the yarnbombing bucket list as well. ❤️ Life’s been bonkers but the yarnbomb adventures have continued! I have some exciting news to share in my next post regarding Junk Bonanza this fall! ✨🧶✨ #knitteapolis #yarnbomb #crochet #knitwitadventure #yarnbombing #yarnbombs #knitting #florida #newportrichey #crochetallday #familytime #knittersofinstagram #happyhooker #junkbonanza #yarnbomber #yarnstorm #crochetersofinstagram #crochetbythepool #summervibes #newportricheyfl #pooltime (at New Port Richey, Florida) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1KLSdNnM88/?igshid=1axw2o8spkxlh

June 11th is...
Corn On The Cob Day - Fresh corn on the cob is a summertime treat people from all corners of the United States look forward to as we start the picnic season. In different regions of the country, corn on the cob is known as pole corn, cornstick, sweet pole, butter-pop, sweet corn, or long maize. Picking the corn when the kernels are tender and in its milk stage serves up sweeter kernels. Boiling, steaming, roasting, and grilling are the most common ways to prepare corn on the cob. When grilling or roasting sweet corn, the husks may be left on to retain moisture and flavor during the cooking process.
German Chocolate Cake Day - The cake’s roots can be traced back to 1852 when American Sam German made a type of dark baking chocolate for the American Baker’s Chocolate Company. Baker’s German Sweet Chocolate’s brand was named in honor of Sam German. Over 100 years later in 1957, a recipe for “German’s Chocolate Cake” appeared as the Recipe of the Day in the Dallas Morning Star. This recipe, created by Mrs. George Clay, used Baker’s German’s Sweet Chocolate, and it became quite popular. During this time, General Foods owned Baker’s brand and distributed Mrs. Clay’s recipe to other newspapers around the country. The current name of German Chocolate Cake, as we know it today, came to be as publications started dropping the ‘s.
Making Life Beautiful Day -  Beauty comes in many forms. From a kind word to a gentle soul, those who lift up others and find strength in the sparest strands of hope bring beauty into this world. Some send messages in the form of bold art while others roll up their sleeves in times of need. Those beautiful people heal the wounded, ease the hearts of the weary, and empower others to be the best person they can be to make life so very beautiful.
Yarn Bombing Day - We first need to take a look at what yarn bombing is. It is sometimes referred to as guerrilla knitting or yarnstorming. No matter what you call it, it is simply the practice of knitted works of art being added to public places. For example, a yarn bomber may design some sort of colorful knitted pattern and wrap it around a bus stop. The aim of this practice was to try and take knitting from something that was viewed as merely for creating clothes and hats to something that could add meaning and color to urban locations.

Yarn bombing, yarnstorming, guerrilla knitting or crocheting, urban knitting or crocheting, graffiti knitting or crocheting - these are all names for a relatively new counterpoint in street art. Showing up on trees, lamp posts, monuments, benches, and other elements of everyday cityscape, the practice is a new artistic form that has been invading our streets in brilliant colors, bringing street art and craft together.. It seems that wool and crafts bring about qualities such as authenticity, or at least a longing, a desire to relate to our humanness, to ourselves and others, on deeper and more genuine level. Sentimental in a way that it seems to relate to our emotions first, yarn bombing is tactile in nature, connoting familiarity, intimacy, immediacy, or closeness.
As textiles became available to a large portion of society in the 19th century due to a change of its production and consumption, various textile and fiber arts and crafts such as sewing, weaving, embroidery or quilting, penetrated average households as activities mainly reserved for women. As often part-time and casual activities done at home, these crafts were identified with domesticity and women’s creativity and thus devalued and described as non-productive. . With the rise of the Feminist movement in the 1960s and 1970s, textiles and fiber began to be reintroduced into “high art”. The movement has reclaimed this realm to include these artistic practices that had traditionally been relegated to the lower status of “women’s work”.
Initially, yarn bombing was almost exclusively about reclaiming and personalizing sterile public places and giving them a personal touch. Having a need to create something fun, unexpected and beautiful, these artists used yarn to create warmth and comfort inside the urban environment that was often perceived cold, depressing and unfriendly. By doing so, they break the routine of the passers-by, making them stop for a moment to admire the work or even criticize it. . Over time, the art form has developed in a variety of ways through the practice of collectives and artists working worldwide, each with their own agendas and aesthetics. Many yarn bombers see it as an act of subversion on a number of levels. While some tend to subvert norms about knitting and how it should be employed and enjoyed, others are about subverting ideas about femininity and domesticity by taking a homemaker medium into the society. On the other hand, others are drawn to the peaceful protest aspect of yarn bombing, often rallying around activist ideals such as feminism, politics or anti-consumerist sentiments in their installation activities. Knitting protests can attract and speak to a different demographic than placards and public marches, as creative approaches help alleviate the anxiety people are feeling without endangering them

Another Knit Wit completed! You Instagram detectives might’ve noticed that I ever so subtly changed the release date from July 1st to July 4th in my previous post. I could make up a charming story about why I set the day back but to be completely honest, I got distracted with life stuff and completely forgot the date! Ever do that? Think it’s one month only to find out it’s the next? Disconcerting and mine boggling! 😱 However the KnitWits are coming along wonderfully and I am super excited to release them into the world July 4th. 🌎🧶❣️ The first batch of KnitWits will be placed around parade and firework hot spots in Minnesota. Keep an eye on my Insta story for clues to where each KnitWit can be found. 🇺🇸❤️ Super important! Make sure to post a photo to social media of your new fiber friend w/ the hashtag #KnitWitAdventure and tag @Knitteapolis. ❤️ This way others can see which KnitWits have been found and which have yet to be discovered! #knitteapolis #guerrillaart #raok #kindnessiscontagious #yarnbombing #geocaching #guerrillakindness #exploremn #yarnbombing #guerrillaknitting #yarnbomb #yarnstorm #crochetallday #knittersgonnaknit #mncrochet #mnart #scavengerhunt #thisismymn #whimsy #yarnbombs #yarnbomber #minnesota #spreadlove #smilesformiles (at Saint Paul, Minnesota) https://www.instagram.com/p/BzbW45snJ-3/?igshid=kclfyxw2fw37

Look Out! Yarn Storming at Session Road!
If you’ve walked up or down Session Road lately, you may have noticed a number of poles and street signs embellished with something bright and fuzzy… YARN!
It was two months ago when patches of knitted yarn started appearing along Session Road, and little by little these fluffy creations have been creeping their way into one of the busiest places in Baguio.
This phenomenon is called “yarnbombing” or “yarnstorming”, which first gained popularity in Texas around 2005, and now twelve years later, the phenomenon has made its way to Baguio, led by Dumay Solinggay and Ira Noefe.
We happy few from Where To, Baguio? tagged along to get a first hand experience of what happens during this simple, yet striking little beautification project.
Dumay and Ira worked on pre-made yarn pieces before the yarnbombing itself. All that was left to do was to attach them to different poles by stitching them together.
The pieces were wacky, weird, and cute. One piece is filled with eyeballs. Another piece is patterned with pedestrian symbols. And another piece has giant hands waiting to grab your attention with Free Hogs.* Other pieces were cut out from old knitted clothes, so if you want to donate your old knit sweaters for the next yarn storm, feel free to do so!
Previously, some of the knitted pieces have gone missing, and no one knows where they go or who takes them. So a little bit of industrial strength adhesive did the trick in keeping them in place.
Many passers by would stop and ask questions about what we were doing, and we were just like, “Oh you know, just trying to make Baguio a little bit prettier.” But also, this is being done in efforts of being noticed as a UNESCO creative city, as well as make some intrigue for an upcoming Literary Festival in Baguio.
Now that the Brrrr months are upon us, these whimsical pieces of graffiti have come at just the right moment to spread a little sense of warmth along Session Road.
Watch out for the next yarn storm! And follow Baguio Dreaming on Facebook.
