They say it’s not about the camera that takes the picture but.... sometimes it is. Every so often I will return to these images not because they’re my best but because of how they came about. I was just beginning to really put my focus on film at this point and a month earlier I’d been at an estate sale and thrifted a beautiful Yashica-44. This is one of the more impressive looking TLR’s you’ll find, the downside is that this camera uses 127 film. It just so happens that the camera was already loaded with a roll of film which I discovered when I opened up the back. I have no way of knowing how long this film had been in the camera, the film code 6014 is for Kodacolor II which was discontinued in 1963, soooo likely it’d been sitting in this camera since the 1960′s. At the time I knew very little about the camera, I can’t remember if I adjusted the aperture or shutter speed, I knew enough but not much. I rattled off a handful of images before the roll was done. I wish I’d played around more with angles... maybe I did adjust the shutter speed and the fact that this film was so old it wouldn’t have mattered. I don’t know. But it is mind boggling to me that this very old camera with very old film loaded by someone in the early 1960′s would eventually produce images fifty years later. I later sold the camera with the two unexposed rolls of 127 film I had, I was tempted to keep it but knew that it would rarely get used. That beautiful Yashica 44 deserved to go to someone who would use it and in term help me fund other work.

pete-P804 by Petko iordanov Via Flickr: Yashica 44 LM with old film. Self cut and respooled from 120 film. The film on top it was very old came with this defect from the lab, probably the rollers made this marks.
