[ad_1] Smuin Up to date BalletDance Collection 2Blue Protect of California Theater at YBCA, San FranciscoCould third, 2024Final Friday night time introduced the opening of Smuin Up to date Ballet’s Dance Collection 2 – a charming visible feast that serves because the conclusion to the corporate’s present season. And that is one for the document books. Not solely does Smuin mark an epic three many years, but additionally a change in Inventive management. Quickly Affiliate Inventive Director Amy Seiwert will take the helm as Smuin’s new A.D., as Celia Fushille strikes on from a submit she has held for seventeen years. Fushille and Seiwert have come collectively to craft subsequent season, an thrilling assortment of previous and current work which was only recently introduced. However first, the thirtieth 12 months should come to an finish, and the Dance Collection 2 program was a dynamic and entertaining finale, certainly. A quadruple invoice of Founder Michael Smuin’s StarshadowsBrennan Wall’s UntwineSeiwert’s Damaged Open and the world premiere of Annabelle Lopez Ochoas’s Tupelo Twister. Cassidy Isaacson and Brandon Alexander inWall's UntwinePhotograph Chris HardyThe primary two items actually had a throughline; and it was the notion of pairs, of couples. A lyrical waltz set to a Maurice Ravel composition, Michael Smuin’s wistful Starshadows (1997) had romance to spare. Three couples entered and exited the starry backdropped stage with dreamy, romantic abandon. Splits have been imagined on and off the ground because the dancers created a woven tapestry of elegant ease. Calming and flowy, Starshadows was not simply an excellent introduction into the performative area; it was an ideal counter for what would unfold subsequent. Untwinechoreographed in 2022 by Smuin firm artist Brennan Wall, shared a penchant for pas de deux. However not like Starshadowsit started with a burst of dramatic cost. Danced by Cassidy Isaacson and Brandon Alexander, the primary duet featured a plethora of transferring lifts. The pair spinning, interlacing, and defying centrifugal forces at each flip. Then out of the blue the temper shifted. Three further couples joined the scene, and the ambiance modified to certainly one of quiet restraint. Classical ballet traces peppered the phrase materials; subdued physique postures grounded the composition. Then, the 2 sensibilities merged, displaying the thrilling play that may exist between quiet restraint and dramatic cost. You will need to observe that every one seven pairings have been heteronormative – I ponder if the present casting selections could possibly be totally different. One other mixture of modalities was in retailer after the primary intermission with Seiwert’s Damaged Open (2015). A blinding mélange of latest and conventional ballet, Damaged Open invitations its viewers to expertise a multi-chapter bodily novel. And it really is sort of an emotional experience, journeying from a critical, somber tone on the onset to a happier and brighter actuality on the finish.Smuin in Seiwert's Damaged OpenPhotograph Chris HardyThe thought of ‘breaking open’ was all over the place on this full ensemble suite. Second place was ample – in plié, in developpé, in perspective. Group vignettes have been by no means stagnant. Fairly, they have been in fixed movement, evolving and creating new landscapes and vistas. Legs and arms flicked into the air, seemingly ridding themselves of constraint. Pirouettes unfolded with excessive arms, opening up the entrance of the physique. There was even a ‘breaking open’ of the stage space as Seiwert employed the wings as an energetic place, a spot to onboard motion phrases. The dancers have been large all through, with a stand-out, passionate pas de trois from Mengjung Chen, Dominic Barret and Yuri Rogers. And there was an additional infusion of vitality on opening night time as composer Julia Kent supplied stay cello accompaniment. The one factor that felt considerably misplaced for me have been the costumes. Many theatrical units have been current in Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s Tupelo Twistera world premiere ensemble work that took a deep dive into Elvis-Presley-land. There have been blue (suede?) gloves. A tv set headpiece. A neon on-air radio signal and accompanying static. Masks, crowns, fringe. Music. And naturally, a lot choreography, together with a genius Fosse-style dance line. It was entertaining; participating, and the differing parts all labored in live performance to convey the viewers and Elvis right into a shared surroundings. Brandon Alexander in Annabelle Lopez Ochoa'sTupelo TwisterPhotograph Chris HardyHowever Tupelo was not all bell bottoms and screaming followers. It was a dance drama, a chunk of dance theater. Dance theater with a story message and theme. Tupelo investigated the birthing of picture. The machine that could be behind the constructing of a persona. The created self and the lack of self. Fame, sure, but additionally prices, realities, penalties and appropriation. It was deep, nuanced and layered, and within the titular function, Alexander was transcendent.Dance Collection 2 runs in San Francisco till Could twelfth, earlier than heading to Mountain View, Walnut Creek and Carmel. Kemang Wa Lehulere - The Chosen One
I've zeroed in on Kemang Wa Lehulere from the Tate website for my project. What caught my eye were his installations and diverse exhibitions, characterized by a captivating abstract nature.
This seems like a perfect fit for the brief's aim to transform abstract concepts into a game level. Kemang's installations hold profound meaning, and I'm eager to unravel the depths of significance behind some of his works in the upcoming blog posts.
Kemang Wa Lehulere was born in 1984 in Gugulethu, Cape Town, and lives and works in Johannesburg. Engaging with a range of media, including sculpture, installation, drawing, and performance, Kemang Wa Lehulere crafts environments using found objects and salvaged materials. His work intertwines personal memories with collective narratives, using items like school desks, tires, chalkboards, and ceramic dogs to explore the nuanced and potentially subversive meanings of objects. By reconfiguring and assembling these materials, he poetically highlights their 'double lives' and multiple interpretations.
Wa Lehulere addresses the trauma of South Africa's contemporary history by employing physical acts of excavation and deconstruction. Collaborating across time, he references, re-frames, and engages in 'call-and-response' with artists, writers, and family members significant to him. Through his exhibitions, he not only showcases his own work but also highlights other practitioners, emphasizing the politics of cultural erasure and prompting reflection on the gap between individual experiences and official historical accounts.
Wa Lehulere's visual language, influenced by institutions, contributes to the discourse on structural violence, emphasizing the importance of decolonized education and theoretical research. His work urges us to consider the urgency of reevaluating historical narratives and acknowledges the complexity of lived experiences often overlooked in sanctioned accounts.

I travel alone a lot, and while it has amazing advantages, esp. Not having to convince anyone to see yet another graffiti or museum, it also has moments where time is magnified and queues become unending, and meals yummy but solitary. Sometimes in those trips, magical encounters happen, someone strikes up a conversation, shares a table, a smile, a memory. Those serendipitous moments when I remember that we all belong to a bigger community #magritte #sfmoma #ybca #millionairebacon #serendipity #newfriends #opentoencounters

Come out to the San Francisco International Arts Festival! I will be performing as an inspector for the Interrogation Room, which is is an immersive performance piece. It is grounded in whimsy and absurdity, that comments on and parodies the power dynamics involved with gaining citizenship, entry or membership to a new space. Inside a processing center for the independent state of Samchriavid, audience members are invited to choose from two levels of participation: applicant or spectator. Applicants are randomly assessed, selected for interrogation, measured, and when the interaction concludes, issued on the spot judgements of their statuses. This project was created in collaboration with the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts’ fellowship program, Why Citizenship? #YBCA #citizenship . Date and Time: Friday, May 25, 7:00pm; Sunday, May 27, 2:00pm Duration: 60 mins, without intermission Location: Firehouse . https://m.facebook.com/events/216289582268902/ (at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture)
