Arplan, a Riga-based architectural firm offering architectural and project management services, has completed City Oasis, a new urbanistic residential area in Riga, Latvia. The remarkable development borders Riga’s city center. In partnership with B&R Progetti, led by architect Paolo Bodega and engineer Giussepie M. Rustignoli, Arplan was named as the lead local architect for the project after winning an architecture competition in 2011.

The project includes the structural engineering expertise of Finnmap Latvia, a trusted partner in a number of Arplan projects. Finnmap Latvia leverages state-of-the-art design technologies, including BIM and advanced analysis, to determine the most optimal construction solutions for increasing efficiency.

The City Oasis Residential Quarter is adjacent to a UNESCO World Heritage area, thus requiring development plans for the quarter to undergo several approval processes over the years. To date, building permits have been issued and the start of construction activities is currently planned for 2021. The development project foresees 326 new functional city homes in a safe, green, and urbanistic environment.

“We wanted to create an area where people would feel truly great,” said Rolands Bruzgulis, founder and lead architect of Arplan. “It will be an inclusive residential quarter, with well-thought-out planning and landscaping, aesthetic architecture, and high-quality materials for both the interiors and exteriors.”

Mr. Bruzgulis notes that the process has been time-consuming due to the project’s proximity to the UNESCO Heritage site, adding a number of additional requirements that needed to be met.

Breathing new life into a historic area The future City Oasis Residential Quarter is located on the site of a historic textile factory, founded in 1866. By 1913, the factory gained prominence as the largest factory of its kind in the Russian empire, and it remained functional until 1989. In preparing the site for development, toxic buildings were demolished and more than 14,000 cubic meters of soil were excavated. Industrial architectural elements of historical value were preserved, including a water tower and the landmark chimney of the former textile factory, both of which will be incorporated into the new complex’s design. City Oasis will be a unique combination of newly constructed buildings and restored historical buildings.

The project foresees the construction of 3 modern 6-7 story buildings, with commercial premises on the ground level. Several apartments will have large private terraces, and the first building will house 216 homes ranging in area from 32-122sqm.

Two additional newly-constructed buildings will feature renovated historic facades, combining contemporary and historic industrial design elements. Those two buildings will have an additional 98 apartments, from mezzanine-style apartments with private first-floor entrances, to spacious lofts on the upper floors. Some units located on the development’s main thoroughfare will also feature glazed bow windows. Pre-fabricated concrete and moldings create a delicate balance with consistent design signatures.

The project will also include a fully-renovated 19th-century villa with 12 premium-class apartments. Some of the building’s historic charms will be preserved, including original details on windows and doors.

City Oasis is a perfect environment for those seeking a safe and comfortable home, away from the hustle and bustle of surrounding city life. Thanks to the project’s versatility, it meets the needs and dreams of everyone in search of the perfect home. City Oasis is easily accessible by car or public transportation, and it is ideal for bicycles and electric scooters. The area is just minutes away from 4 secondary schools, a swimming pool, cafés and restaurants, and Riga’s largest playground and public sports center.

Creating a sustainable community “This is a significant project for the city Riga in terms of the environment that will be created,” emphasizes Bruzgulis. “The location is simply great, and the area will be a pleasant place to spend time contributing to the well-being and development of the community.”

The City Oasis Residential Quarter will be a sustainable living environment, and the developers will preserve existing trees, some of which are more than a century old. Abundant greenery and recreational areas will also be developed.

Additionally, the community’s heating and ventilation systems are being designed to recuperate residual heat.

Further contributing to the sense of community and sustainability of City Oasis, the project will feature a car-free zone courtesy of underground parking for 206 vehicles. An elevated courtyard will sit atop of the underground parking structure, bordering additional internal courtyards featuring abundant green spaces and recreation zones for both adults and children. The goal of the sustainable design is to ensure that City Oasis is the epitome of its title: a green oasis in the heart of a thriving city.

‘What is Chinatown?’ artist Jiawei Zhao looks at Chinatown under lockdown

Jiawei Zhao is a Chinese artist based in New York City. As the country is under lockdown, Zhao uses familiar Chinese symbolism in his artwork to create a feeling of familiarity and comfort in this time of crisis.

The Brooklyn-based artist looks to Manhattan’s Chinatown, and the various Chinatowns across the country, as a point of inspiration for his artworks, be it his series that looks at the closed Chinese-language movie theatres, to his Wallpaper series, which reexamines historic public monuments and their relevancy in our current pandemic—looking back to see a clearer future, so to speak.

Zhao is not your average photographer. He has a knack for looking at everyday issues with a fresh lens, encaptulating history of various Chinatowns, with the present, at once. He also uses photography paper as a 3D object for his collages, like his in his Dragon series, which folds, pastes and wraps photo paper into a sculptural object.

He moved from Beijing in 2008, studied at the Pratt Institute and has shown everywhere from the Masur Museum of Art in LA to the Woodstock’s Center for Photography and the Van Der Plas Gallery, in New York. His artworks will be part of the Other Art Fair Brooklyn, and the virtual edition of the fair is opening tomorrow on their website (his online booth can be found here).

Zhao spoke from his studio in Brooklyn about Chinatown, forgotten monuments and those familiar yellow gates.

What was it like living in Beijing, as a cultural city, before you arrived in New York?

Jiawei Zhao: Beijing is a cultural city, but also a business hub. Although I have been away for 12 years, I can see the huge changes since Beijing has become a modern metroplex. As far as the arts go, there were only a few galleries in 2008, now you can see many new private museums, art centers, and galleries in various art districts. Beijing is culturally inclusive.

What do most people not know about Beijing?

It still retains the aura and characteristics of the ancient and classical Forbidden City that it has been throughout the centuries; it was the capital of China for over 800 years, and the architecture has been well-protected. People can see the treasures of imperial history through the gates, houses and buildings. There are so many parks, lakes, gardens and gated buildings which were used to serve imperial families, and are spread across Beijing, and are open to the public.

How has your experience in China influenced how you work as an artist today in NYC?

My Chinese culture heritage has a profound impact on my work; I lived in a small town before moving to Beijing when I was 12, and this first move inspired me to think about the ‘spaces’ among cultural heritage. There are many various cultures among different towns and regions in China. In the US, I’ve lived in Wisconsin, Texas and New York. My educational experiences in China and the US are interlinked and influence my current artwork. Working as an artist in New York, I focus on making the photographic ‘space’ that connects my educational experience in the US with my Chinese cultural heritage.

What do you think about the pandemic, and what are people saying back home in China?

The pandemic is a catastrophic disaster for all mankind. In China, people have worked very hard to combat this situation. After all of this, Chinese people would like their life to go back to normal, as I think people all over the world are hoping to do.

Your artwork includes Chinese culture, like New Years’ greetings, as well as photos, calendars and newspapers. How do they all connect?

These are all Chinese cultural references as part of my Wallpaper project. It taps into the common practice of pasting newspapers on the walls of one’s home, a handy and affordable solution for wallpaper in China. I used The New York Times because it reports on Chinese current affairs. My artwork creates photographic ‘space’ for immigrants, like myself, who come to the US for education.

Which framed photos do you use?

These photos are all buildings in Manhattan’s Chinatown, which has Chinese cultural connections, and I’m questioning if these spaces give us comfort, a feeling of security. These calendars and the photos are all created by me. Some of them are found photos or archived photos, some of them are taken by me. I highlighted subjectivity and objectivity in my work. In other words, not just portraits, all those small images framed are either from found photos or taken by me.

Your artwork includes photos of public art monuments, which ones are they and why?

Those monuments are in various Chinatowns throughout the US, most are statues of famous Chinese people. But do we still care about them, or are they just symbols? My goal is to provide a sense of comfort and security. In Wallpapers, I question and doubt Chinese connections which did not provide such a space.

Why did you call one of your pieces What is a Chinatown? from 2018?

In America, when we think of ‘Chinese culture,’ we always think of Chinatown; we always think of the big entrance gates with yellow roof and red pillars. Chinatown is symbolic. It has nothing to do with current Chinese culture or Chinese people. Chinatown was an enclave and now it is a tourist attraction. With media stereotypes, many people have the same impression of Chinese immigrants as they do about Chinatown. But the young Chinese immigrants who come here for education, Chinatown does not offer real ‘space.’ I call Chinatown a cultural context of historical, first-generation Chinese Americans.

How does your series Once Upon a Time at Chinatown Movie Theaters look at a disappearing Chinatown?

There used to be eight movie theaters in New York City’s Chinatown. Those movie theaters, which only showed Chinese language movies, were the only form of community and entertainment for new Chinese immigrants seeking their own cultural comforts. The theaters all closed down around 20 years ago. My artwork shows a movie of American academic buildings composed of installations of letter-size of traditional Chinese rice paper and gold paper at the sites of these former theaters.

Hyperallergic: Participatory Stool Making, Reclaimed Materials, and More at Collective Design Fair

Today the Collective Design Fair opens with almost 30 exhibitors at Skylight Clarkson Sq in Manhattan. There’s a thread of material reuse running through the fifth edition, seen in Stickbulb’s lighting installation made with an arch of 300-year-old redwood reclaimed from defunct New York City water towers and Brook Landscape’s “Green Corridor,” with a floor of timber from Rockaway boardwalks destroyed in Hurricane Sandy. Furniture, lighting fixtures, and functional design dominate, but there’s an increase in photography this year, particularly in the displays of New York galleries Yossi Milo and Yancey Richardson.

Overlooking the sleek booths of the main showroom is a dimly illuminated space where a curious white orb rests on the floor, surrounded by colorful concoctions in containers. If you time your visit right this week, you can witness the orb being pushed around by spectators and members of the Viennese design collective breadedEscalope, whose series of Original Stools are formed by filling a silicone mold within the sphere with resin and using motion to create a unique object.

Compared to some of the orb’s previous journeys since 2007, including to the Olympic bobsleigh track in St. Moritz, Switzerland, and the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Spain, a roll around the floor of Skylight Clarkson Sq is fairly mundane. “The project doesn’t really need that,” Michael Tatschl, a member of breadedEscalope, told Hyperallergic of the orb’s more extreme adventures. “We believe it’s much more an engaging project where people join in making things.” Martin Schnabl, a fellow member, added that “there’s always a different outcome that’s site specific.”

The Original Stools will be made from Wednesday to Saturday at the fair at 4:30pm, with a final event taking place on Sunday at 1:30pm. The first attempt, during the media preview on Tuesday, was rather tame, as journalists juggled their cameras and phones with Facebook livestreams while tentatively pushing the ball. “We should be more violent next time,” Schnabl commented upon seeing the yellow seat that emerged from the orb, only slightly misshapen. The resin was still warm to the touch, “like fresh bread,” he added.

More erratic breadedEscalope creations are on view with Frederieke Taylor Gallery of New York. While they’re certainly the most interactive pieces at this year’s Collective Design (although you might be tempted to collapse on one of the Haas Brothers’ hairy-creature-like couches at R & Company), there’s much for fairgoers to discover. The playful work of Swiss designer Matti Bonetti is featured in the mini Collective Influence exhibition. Flavor Paper and UM Project are presenting touch-activated conductive ink wallpaper that illuminates lights and activates fans. Hidden in an industrial corner of the space, the Noguchi Museum’s installation mixes work by its namesake with undulating sofas by Robert Stadler.
