Recent commission all wrapped up for the ultimate fan of American Graffiti, The Outsiders, classic horror movies, sunsets, and a triangular shaped 20 block neighborhood in Rochester, NY. Really hoping to stop by the Highland Park Diner and eat too much food and drink too much coffee in a hopefully near post-covid future.
Unfortunately, The Cinema Theater announced in February that they will be closing their doors indefinitely. Hoping someone jumps in and saves the day, especially since they've been a functioning movie theater since 1914, one of the longest running theaters in the United States.

A penchant for purple: part 3 (Series 3)
“Colours are light's suffering and joy.” ― Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
In part 1 and part 2 of this series, we saw the disruptive influence of purple as identified by Goethe in his treatise on colour, Zur Farbenlehre (Theory of Colour).  Goethe in his analyses did not bother with colour as a physical phenomenon to be dissected; on the contrary, his philosophy concentrates on how colour is sensed and interpreted by the eye then the mind.
Goethe, poet, dramatist, novelist, and philosopher, was motivated by his interest in painting, and describes, in some of the earliest published accounts, coloured shadows, after images and complementary colours. In contrast to Isaac Newton, he was not concerned with the physics of colour, analytic measurement and cold, hard mathematics.  He was concerned with colour harmony and ways of characterising how colours affect the viewer.
Philosophers and psychologists embraced Zur Farbenlehre; physicists rejected it.
In theorising about the psychological impacts of colours, Goethe’s ‘chromatic’ wheel, as he termed it, illustrates also the opposition of colour as perceived by the human eye.
Purple, the most powerful wavelength of the spectrum, sits, in Goethe’s colour wheel, on the divide between reddish-yellow (orange) and the reddish-blue (violet). It resolves the polarity between yellow and blue.
Tumblr media
from Theory of Colours, (1840), Plate I Figure 3 and ¶612
(Primary and secondary colours are depicted as triangles and complementary relationships are depicted as straight lines.)
It was Goethe who introduced the colour purple into his schemas, while Newton’s theory contained only spectral colours. Purple is still included in colour wheels today.
Purple is the zenith of Goethe’s world of colours.
Its manifestations in MFMM are hugely varied and, with some poetic licence, extend from pale mauve satin, delicate lilac chiffon and soft lavender feathers, to deep, rich violet felts and noble purple itself in plush velvet.  Series 3 sees on-going glimpses as well as long, lingering gazes at its tonal palette.
Tumblr media
First glimpse appears in Episode 1 of Series 3, Death Defying Feats, and in the awkwardness, then the more relaxed environment of the morning after the night before.  Phryne and Jack have had  a couple of dates defied by death and Daddy, and they are just coming to terms with his waking up in her bed.
Our colour de jour appears in the form of a soft lavender silk scarf that accompanies Phryne’s eggshell blue chinoise coat.  Having established what took place, they revert to collaborative detective-mode to interview the contortionist, her unravelled appearance complete with floral dress displaying bunches of violets:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The pale lilac-grey scarf then accompanies Phryne and Dot, then Phryne and Jack on investigations into the mysteriously misplaced mermaid Millie, with reflections of the blue-lavender in the trim of Phryne’s red cloche:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mysterious Millie offers some purple accessories of her own:
Tumblr media
Goethe appreciates that the sensation of complementarity does not originate physically from the actions of light on our eyes but perceptually from the actions of our brain - our visual system.
And in his system, it is green that has a complementary relationship to purple (just saying):
Tumblr media
Episode 2, Murder and the Maiden
Tumblr media
Just when we thought, after the Episode 1 date disasters, that things might start looking up, along comes Episode 2 and a pronounced purple patch.
Purple’s ability to both excite and then dampen delight appears in another piece of gorgeous chinoiserie, and no subtlety of colour this time. The black, midnight blue and purple silk has purple silk lining, trim and cuffs, and a purple cloche with silk embroidered floral motifs; Phryne’s earrings dangle purple appeal.
Tumblr media
Despite some reminiscing and some subsequent remonstrating, the dashing detective duo collaborate to confound culprits (and captains):
Tumblr media
Series 3, Episode 3 Murder and Mozzarella
For a scene with ‘a rival for Jack’s affection’ Phryne needs an outfit that ‘is sexy but incredibly elegant’ (MFMM Costume Exhibition catalogue). It is black beaded Chantilly lace over a purple silk under-slip.
Phryne’s visit is to find out, ostensibly, more about the feud between culinary families and involvement of the Camorra, but perhaps it is more than rival restaurants that incite the visit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Concetta: You are a friend of Gianni's? Jack.
Phryne: A friend, yes. And you?
Concetta: Si. He tried very hard to find who killed my husband, but it is not easy. Since then he has dinner here many, many nights.
Phryne: He must like the food.
Tumblr media
And just to make sure we have this evening and the next day firmly established as significant, the next morning reinforces the purple theme, with perhaps one of the most telling scenes in relation to Phryne’s growing propriety of Jack:
Tumblr media
Phryne: I didn't know you drank coffee, Jack.
Jack: Would you like me to make a full confession?
Phryne: No, thank you. I prefer a never-ending source of mystery.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jack: Concetta, this is Miss Fisher.
Concetta: Si. We talked last night.
Jack: Did you now?
The rich purple velvet jacket with wide buttoned cuffs is teemed with a black straw hat and feathers of black, white and lavender and a long black and purple floral print scarf.  The coat could well be one we’ve seen previously in Raisins and Almonds and/or Juana, but without the fur collar.  But it continues tonally the link with Phryne’s dinner with Concetta.
The tonal link with Jack too is reinforced as they walk away from Strano’s, the red lining of their coats in step with their, well... step.
Tumblr media
There’s some serious manoeuvring on both their parts as murder investigation and personal interest interplay in a truly delightful exchange of flirtatious banter:
Jack: So you came back to the restaurant last night.
Phryne: I had a few questions for Concetta.
Jack: Did you get the answers you were looking for?
Phryne: Too early to say. When you say 'old friend', do you mean 'old friend' like Dr Mac, or 'old friend' like Captain Compton?
Jack: Concetta Strano hasn't saved my life from a burning plane wreck in Madagascar, if that's what you mean.
Then a change of tone as concern for one another becomes serious:
Tumblr media
Jack: I'm more concerned about you getting in too deep.
Phryne: Who, me?
Jack: Look, these people have been killing each other for generations...
Phryne: I'll be careful. Promise me you'll be careful too.
The plush purple and accoutrements head off to the docks for a shoot out:
Tumblr media
Then a meeting with Mac in the morgue:
Mac: I have no doubt she was attacked, but that wasn't what killed her.
Phryne: There were mushrooms in the dish she was preparing.
Mac: That is where it gets interesting. I tested the contents. Those mushrooms were not poisonous.
Phryne: So, she was killed by different mushrooms?
Tumblr media
A slightly awkward interview with Guido:
Tumblr media
And a return to the scene of the crime and a rather beautiful vignette in the restaurant garden with Marianna:
Tumblr media
The colour seems to be significant in this episode in its presence in scenes that highlight both personal and professional ties.
Tumblr media
So to the final coup d’oeil for the series in Game, Set and Murder,  Episode 8. Tennis is at the heart of this murderous mystery - literally!
Phryne wears a lilac silk chiffon scarf with yet another piece of chinoiserie, this time a smokey silver-blue jacket. Trim on the palest mauve-grey straw cloche echoes the scarf.
Tumblr media
Phryne’s old friendship with the Burrows is tested, as love of tennis becomes more than a game.  Constance loves tennis to the point of obsession and her adoring husband is prepared to support her ambition at any length.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the scenes set in the gorgeous grounds of Ripponlea (Aunt P’s house again?) the lilac of the the scarf is reflected in the jacaranda in bloom behind the tennis courts.
Tumblr media
The detective duo are decidedly working as a mixed double - both on and off the court, despite a deuce of a difficulty or two or three: prying paparazzi, tempting tennis contestants, and arachnophobic interludes.
Final score - love all?

The American Graffiti 1958 Chevy Bel-Air Impala:
While not a Super Sport (the option was first offered on the Impala in 1961) this car was featured in the George Lucas/Francis Ford Coppola film American graffiti in 1973, the first Impala was a top of the line option on the Bel-Air. The white movie car was driven by actor Ron Howard in the film and is borrowed by his friend, stolen, recovered and has become a lasting part of American auto movie history alongside the yellow Deuce Coupe. After filming the car was sold by LucasFilms for $285 to a young man who would enlist in the Marine Corp and store it in his parent’s garage until 2004. In 2015 the car was to be auctioned off at the Profiles in History sale as lot# 1531 for an estimated $800,000 to $1,200,000. Fate would intervene when famed NASCAR team crew chief Ray Evernham negotiated a private sale. Motive power for the car had been contentious as in the film it is described as being a a 327 Chevy V8 with 6 Stromberg carbs. The car as bought from LucasFilms had a 348 which was replaced with a 283 ci sporting a standard four-barrel carb. Evernham restored the car in grand fashion and it was unveiled at the 2016 SEMA show much to the appreciation of car and movie fans around the world. When Jon Moss attended the inaugural GM Nationals at the Carlisle PA fairgrounds in 2001 and was asked to give an award in his name, he chose a `58 Impala as his favorite at the show.

2019 Grand National Roadster Show Painless Performance/STREET RODDER Top 100 Winners
The big award at the Grand National Roadster Show is America’s Most Beautiful Roadster. This year, 14 roadsters competed for that title and the 9-foot trophy that comes with it. Simultaneously, more than 500 participants were in consideration for ten Painless Performance/STREET RODDER Top 100 awards.
STREET RODDER and Painless Performance have teamed up on this award at the Grand National Roadster Show for many years. Unlike the AMBR award, every participating vehicle at the show is eligible to win Top 100, regardless of year and body type. As you’ll see, our picks from Pomona cover a 40-year span and include various makes, designs, and styles. And just like the street rods competing for the AMBR prize (there is some overlap), these rods are exceptional.
The Painless Performance/STREET RODDER Top 100 program will continue at the Sacramento Autorama in February where we will select ten more vehicles. For now, take a look at these 10 extraordinary winners from the 70th Annual Grand National Roadster Show.
1932 Ford Roadster Jim Govro Dripping Springs, TX
In the early Fifties, Jim Govro drove this channeled roadster to high school. He raced it at Bonnneville in 1954. In 1955, it was painted yellow and drag raced in Texas—and at the NHRA Nats in 1957 and 1958. He sold “Tweety” in 1962. Fifty years (to the month) later, he bought it back. Rex Rod & Chassis rebuilt it labor free on the condition that it be finished as close as possible to its earliest version. That includes a 1951 Cadillac 331 with dual 97s and Offy valve covers. The interior is upholstered in white Naugahyde replicating the early style. The gauges are 1940 Ford and the steering wheel is 1954 Olds. Skinny bias-ply whitewalls  roll on 15-inch Ford wheels, with piecrust slicks on Oldsmobile wheels. Jim spent the weekend sharing vintage photos with hundreds of fans.
1954 Chevy 210 Custom Roger Miret Scottsdale, AZ
Roger Miret’s ’54 Chevy, built in traditional kustom style, was the first car we saw when entering the Suede Palace. Another build that started simple and snowballed, ”Morphine” was a shared effort by the Phoenix Rumblers Car Club. Its  numerous sheetmetal mods include ’56 Chrysler taillights and three top chops to achieve the perfect proportions. Elaborate panel paint and seaweed flames, and an on-the-ground profile (provided by air bags and step-notched ’rails) make a huge first impression. The Chevy 235 Stovebolt with a Wayne head and dual Strombergs with helmet air cleaners continues the period-correct impression—carried further by a two-tone pleated upholstery. Roger’s kustom left the Suede Palace with a Best Custom win in addition to Top 100.
1958 Edsel Ranger Kathy Lange St. Louis, MO
It isn’t the first Edsel to earn a Top 100 award, but Kathy Lange’s ’58 Ranger doesn’t have many peers. Built by Alloway’s Hot Rod Shop, it started as an original Ranger, but Edsel fans might spot Pacer, and Citation components added to the mix. An Art Morrison chassis provides the modern platform for the car, rolling on 17- and 20-inch five-spokes, designed by Alloway’s and built by Billet Specialties. A 700hp supercharged Coyote engine, built by Roush Performance, is packed under the hood. A pair of ’64 Thunderbird seats were upholstered in Moore and Giles leather to match the custom maroon and silver paint. Edsel gauges were updated by Classic Instruments. Kathy’s unusual custom got a lot of attention when it appeared at the 2018 SEMA Show, and even more at GNRS.
1951 Oldsmobile Club Coupe Rodney & Cheryl Palla Bakersfield, CA
This resto rod Olds is named Sylvia, after Rodney’s grandmother who bought it new. The car stayed in the family, but went into a barn in 1977. When it was pulled out, the all-original car was intact and well-preserved. Rodney kept his promise that he would not cut up the car—the stock body retains all trim and hardware. Everything else has been redone, from the Roadster Shop chassis to the LS3 (disguised with Olds Rocket valve covers, appropriate green paint, and oil-bath air cleaner). Colorado Custom one-off wheels feature 1950-1953 Olds style hubcaps created in 18- and 19-inch diameters. The interior’s early Fifties flavor is updated with Vintage Air A/C, Dakota Digital custom gauges, and a Kicker strereo. Scott Laitinen and the SIC Chops crew did an amazing job.
1936 Ford Coupe Amadeo & Teri Angelo Drummond, MT
When they first bought the car two years ago, Ami and Teri drove it as it was—stock with a mohair interior and Offy Flathead. Then Ami took the coupe to Ben York and his team at Roseville Rod & Custom for some hot rodding. The Cloud Mist Grey coupe now packs a  Don Ferguson/Ardun Enterprises 296ci topped with a S.Co.T. blower, Autotrend EFI 48 injection (disguised as deuce carbs), and oil bath-themed air cleaner. The front fenders and custom-louvered hood have been reshaped to fit the engine, and one inch was chopped from the top. One-off Evod wheels and bias-ply Diamond Back rubber fill the fenders. The coupe sits on a Roadster Shop chassis. Inside the fully modified interior, a pair of custom buckets are covered in brown leather.
1924 Buick 24-6-45 Touring Ryan Rivers Fullerton, CA
Ryan River’s outstanding Buick proves that a mid-budget, homebuilt, non-Ford street rod can compete for the AMBR award. The red and black phaeton was first modified in the Fifties, but like others on this list, sat neglected for decades. Ryan studied art books to create the art deco and art nouveau elements found throughout the car. The top was chopped 11 inches and a REO cloth top was added. The 18-inch custom wheels are modeled after the solid covers found on coachbuilt cars of the Twenties and Thirties; other elegant details conform to the same theme. For example, the hemispherical trim pieces found around the car were made from stainless soup ladles, 22 in all. Buick power comes from a 1952 straight-8 with twin Stromberg 97 carbs.
1931 Ford Model A Coupe Mike Collman Portland, OR
The Suede Palace holds its awards ceremony on Saturday. That’s when they announced Mike Collman’s Sixties show rod influenced Model A as Best Hot Rod. Mike didn’t plan on taking the coupe this far—but the talent of his builder and friend Tony Wilson helped take it to this level. The body has been chopped 3 inches, channeled 4 inches, given suicide doors, and finished with ice blue paint with pinstripes from Mitch Kim. The 322ci Buick Nailhad features six 97s with frog’s mouth scoops plus Offenhauser valve covers. Firestone piecrust whitewalls and Radir cheater slicks are mounted on 15-inch Rocket Racing drag-style wheels. Inside, a Schroder sprint car wheel, ’51 Ford gauges, mirrored dash, and diamond-tuck upholstery all over validate every award won.
1930 Ford Model A Coupe Peter Georgeades Newark, CA
Here’s another Model A with early Sixties flavor. Peter Georgeades worked with Ron Cambra at Cambra Speed Shop to turn a stock coupe into a custom show rod. Peter found the car in an old man’s shop. He changed the plugs, hand cranked the 4-barrel Flathead, and the car came to life. The 4-banger has been replaced with a 383 stroker Chevy small-block with a 6-71 blower and triple Rochester carbs. Body mods include a 4 1/2-inch chop, bobbed rearend, and raised wheel wells, plus a sweet candy red panel paint job. Wheel Smith contributed the 15-inch chrome reverse wheels, wrapped in bias-ply skinnies and grooved slicks. Handmade race bucket seats and Classic Instruments gauges in a custom dash set apart the interior. A Pinkees Rod Shop chassis carries the Model A.
1962 Chevrolet Bel Air Kent Matranga Laguna Hills, CA
This 1962 Chevy bubbletop, built by Andy Leach at CAL Auto Creations, won tons of awards in 2015, including the Barrett-Jackson Cup. Its appearance in Pomona was our chance to add Top 100 to its list of honors. Owned by Randy Wilcox then, and Kent Matranga now, the Magnesium Silver Chevy underwent countless subtle body mods. The engine cover tops the supercharged Corvette LS9 engine. It sits on an Art Morrison frame with a C6 Corvette front suspension and 4-link in back. Billet Specialties created wheels for this car and now sells them as the Grinder model. Recovery Room wrapped custom seats in dark red leather. Cars this nice sometimes disappear after a few years of glory, but we’ve been told that Matranga drives his ’62 whenever he can
1932 Lincoln Victoria Larry Carter Los Gatos, CA
You’d never expect that Larry Carter’s restored two-tone maroon ’32 Lincoln is powered by a Coyote engine. The rare Vicky, one of seven known remaining, was found in a Southern California wrecking yard in the late Sixties. Larry bought it in 2014 and delivered to Roy Brizio Street Rods, requesting an original-looking car with modern components. Updated parts include the Art Morrison independent front suspension and Heidts independent rear. Wilwood brakes are mounted behind the 18-inch custom Lincoln wheels by Don Sommers, rolling on classic Bedford tires. The leather-covered  interior blends original pieces like the ’32 Lincon steering wheel with modern elements like the seats, Classic Instruments gauges, Vintage Air A/C, and SiriusXM audio.

Inspired by a Historic Deuce, a Hemi-Powered 1932 Ford 3-Window Coupe Charts Own Path
One Deuce coupe follows another, but not all play by the rules. Take the blue-green three-window example here, the property of Lynn Bird. Besides the somewhat unusual color, the car stands out thanks to the fender treatment, with a bobbed pair fitted to only the rear. This look gained acceptance during the 1950s, due in part to projects such as the highly revered Lloyd Bakan maroon three-window. It appeared in Rod & Custom magazine in 1956 (featuring motorcycle fenders in front) and on a memorable cover of HOT ROD magazine in October 1957. Parked next to a swimming pool with two bathing beauties posing next to it, the vehicle created quite a stir at the time. (Eric Rickman took that photo standing on a ladder in the pool.) It was also selected to be displayed at the 2007 Grand National Roadster Show as part of a special exhibit celebrating the 75 Most Significant ’32 Ford Hot Rods of All Time.
Lynn Bird’s Deuce isn’t a highboy, nor is it a full-fendered car. It hovers somewhere in between. The idea of installing fenders in the back but not in the front isn’t new, as several hot rods built in the 1950s adopted this configuration, including the Lloyd Bakan three-window coupe.
An outtake from Eric Rickman’s June 1957 photo shoot of Bakan’s coupe shows the similarities between it and Bird’s Deuce.
Bird’s knowledge of the Bakan coupe is a testament to his appreciation for traditional hot rods, not a big surprise considering he has been wrenching on them since the 1960s. The former building engineer, now retired, recalls, “I grew up in the South Bay [southwest of L.A.—ed.], graduating in 1967. The local scene was more about ’55 Chevys and such. There were very few hot rods, but that was my interest, because I started when I was 12 with car models. They were really big in the 1960s. They made ’32 Fords, coupes, and all kinds of neat kits.”
The South Bay offered a great car scene, and he remembers cruising to an A&W Root Beer stand in Carson, a hopping place at the time. Although hot rods remained a rare occurrence, the scene began embracing them once again in the early to mid-1970s, with folks starting to build resto rods.
The use of 5.50-16 and 7.50-16 bias-plies contribute to the coupe’s rake. These Firestone tires fit over genuine 16×4 and reversed 16×5 Ford wheels. In the back, note the bobbed fenders, though Bird is toying with the idea of mounting four stock fenders.
The front suspension utilizes a mix of well-tried and timeless components: Mordrop beam dropped in the 1960s, Pete & Jake tube shocks, split wishbones, 1932 spindles, and vintage Ford F-100 steering box. The factory grille insert painted off-white is a neat touch.
Bird’s journey through our hobby involved a ’39 Ford coupe during high school, followed by many other interesting rides, such as a ’32 Ford five-window coupe and a ’30 Dodge truck. Around 1990, he grew tired of the street rod/billet scene, so he went back in time and built a chopped ’56 Ford with no modern amenities. This led to connecting with the Chislers Car Club, which would eventually morph into the Burbank Choppers before the turn of the century. Bird, who wrenched on friend’s cars as a side job, ended up helping such club members as Jon Fisher, Aaron Kahan, and artist Keith Weesner with their projects.
Having developed close ties with other likeminded enthusiasts, Bird also launched a private annual cruise called the Palos Verdes Hot Rod Run, gathering a who’s-who of the SoCal scene. It allows him to enjoy his numerous vehicles, including three Ford pickups dated 1927, 1929, and 1932. But he has many other treasures in his garage, such as a ’32 Victoria, and a dozen cars waiting to be revived.
A genuine Southern California Timing Association badge bolts to a chromed, dropped headlight bar, which also welcomes a pair of BLC headlights. This desirable SCTA memento was given to Bird by a good friend.
To efficiently stop the vehicle, Bird selected fresh Bendix-style 1940 Lincoln drums for the front, a setup HOT ROD magazine described in “For Show ’n’ Whoa” (Nov. 2013; bit.ly/2JMTsl1). A ’57 Ford supplied its rearend with drum brakes.
And then there’s the blue-green ’32 coupe on these pages. While the history of its last four decades has been well documented, not much is known before that (see sidebar). Bird has performed the resurrection pretty much on his own, starting with the original chassis, fitted with a sturdy X-member. It then received a heavy Deuce dropped I-beam and a 9-inch Ford rearend, guided by ’36 Ford wishbones and rear springs. Combining a 3.55 ring-and-pinion and a 1963 BorgWarner T10 transmission make for comfortable freeway drives, with the V8 happily humming at acceptable revs.
Speaking of the engine, Bird selected a 270ci Dodge Red Ram Hemi due to its good looks and fairly small dimensions, especially compared to the larger Chrysler and DeSoto Hemis. This powerplant, which equipped a sizable portion of the 1955 Dodge line, has been hopped up by our man with various 1950s components, the most obvious being the trio of Stromberg carbs sitting atop a 3×2 Offenhauser manifold. Check out the handsome 1953-1954 Dodge Red Ram valve covers, too, along with the BorgWarner coil and vintage Echlin voltage regulator mounted on the cherry firewall. Other contemporary, reliable parts hide inside the block, including Ross pistons and an Iskenderian camshaft, an appropriate brand considering Ed Iskenderian founded the company just after WWII. Burnt fumes make their way out via a stainless system crafted by Bird.
Whitewall tires and wheels painted a light shade always seem to work on a hot rod dressed with a dark color. Aftermarket Deluxe hubcaps could be purchased from a variety of companies during the 1950s, a great choice for a 1932 Ford.
With help from his wife Virginia, Bird crafted the simple, tasteful upholstery using long-lasting marine-grade vinyl. You can also distinguish the 1948 Lincoln steering wheel and an old shifter from the Hurst line.
With the rolling chassis handled, he could then concentrate on reviving the shell. The menacing hot rod attitude comes courtesy of a severely chopped top, respectively 3 3/4 inches front and 3 1/4 back. The rest of the body remains stock, including the three door hinges on each side. You might believe the exterior color came from a 1950s automobile paint chart, but not so. Bird mixed his own hue and applied it in a makeshift spray booth in his home garage, with excellent results.
Other cleverly picked parts dress the shell, such as ’48 Chevy taillights, owner-made rear nerf bars, and a pair of round vintage mirrors of uncertain origin, typically found on British cars. A jack of all trades, Bird also handled the interior amenities, starting with the seat covers and door panels. It ultimately took more than four decades to revive this old hot rod, but Bird is pleased to now drive a rare Deuce, built entirely by himself on a somewhat limited budget.
The dash retains some of its stock amenities, such as the engine-turned insert and glovebox to the right, the latter being unique to Deluxe (three-window) Deuces, with the exception of European-made ’32 sedans (but they did not feature doors). Three Stewart-Warner gauges reside in the middle.
Within the 1950s Hemi family, Dodge’s 270ci Red Ram offers the advantage of being fairly compact, thus allowing builders to keep the firewall unmolested on a ’32 Ford. Having no hood sides improves cooling, but Bird says he might install them in the future—should they clear the valve covers.
Bolted to the 1955 Hemi, the polished Offenhauser manifold welcomes a trio of Stromberg 97s. A Mallory distributor dispenses the sparks to the cylinders.
After hot rodders came back home following their WWII stints all over the world, they saw fit to adapt a variety of repurposed army goodies to their jalopies. Among them: bomber seats and gas mask bags that were used as a storage “compartment” in the cockpit. Some folks also converted canteens into radiator catch cans, as seen here.
A vast assortment of race cars used nerf bars in the 1950s, so they also became quite popular on hot rods by the middle of the decade. We dig the nicely curved, owner-made pieces, which perfectly complement the chrome spreader bar. The vintage license plate, surrounded by a Bell Auto Parts reproduction frame, adds some contrast to the custom blue-green paint job. Such yellow plates with black characters prove period-correct for this project car, as they were available between 1956 and 1962 in the Golden State.
An Uncertain Past Finding an old, historically significant hot rod might seem like a tantalizing prospect at first. However, with such discovery comes responsibility. The new owner needs to take the vehicle’s history into consideration during the rejuvenation. In other words, it’s often expected that the restorer will return the car to how it was seen during a certain period, looking like it did in, say, a specific 1950s magazine article. It can be a daunting commitment.
Lynn Bird did not face such a hurdle, as his long research regarding this coupe led to nothing conclusive, really. Some might have considered it a disappointment, but Bird saw the positive aspect of his purchase: He was offered the opportunity to create the three-window coupe he always longed for.
These black-and-white pictures date from the 1970s. They represent the only keepsakes of the old Ford’s past. “That’s all I could find,” says Bird. “One of my friends, Jim Hamlin, bought the car in 1977. There was no doubt in his mind that it had been built as a hot rod with a flathead, back in the 1950s or 1960s.”
The tired yet solid Deuce had some attributes often associated with East Coast rods from the era: channeling, a sectioned grille, and no top chop. During the 1980s, that friend decided to morph the hulk into a street rod typical of the time, so Bird helped him install a 289ci Ford V8, a four-speed Ford transmission, a Vega steering box, and a four-link front and rear suspension.
“Unchanneling” the body proved fairly straightforward, thankfully, as whoever did the work had not butchered the floorpan and frames. The derelict chopped grille was replaced with a stock-height unit, as seen in the color photo of the project. Unfortunately, the coupe suffered some unexpected damage shortly after, in a freak incident involving the Reverse gear: The car slammed into Hamlin’s garage wall, wounding both the structure and the ’32’s rear.
This soured him on finishing the project; he finally decided to sell it to his pal years later, in 2010. Bird spent weeks putting the car back in shape before turning it into the ride you see here. The pictures illustrating this sidebar show the long journey made by the Deuce during the last 40 years, a nice destiny for a genuine three-window survivor.
First Ford Lynn Bird’s introduction to the scene came courtesy of this ’39 Ford, which he purchased in 1967. The coupe first relied on a V8 flathead that had certainly seen better days, so he quickly swapped it for a 283ci Chevy. Check out the choice of popular 1960s rims, chrome reverse for the front and dish mags for the rear. Blackwall tires were the norm in those days.

HOT ROD Magazine Reader’s Rides from 1994
HOT ROD has always had a Reader’s Rides section in the magazine that breaks down the fourth wall, starts a conversation, and sees what you, the audience, are doing to your own cars. As you may know, we just had our 70th birthday, and in those seven decades, a lot of photos have been taken.
Though these Reader’s Rides from August 1994 didn’t involve the stereotypical Coddington wheels, creamy paint schemes, and smooth bodywork, they are pretty diverse. The street machine and pro street styles of the ‘80s were petering out, but the cars submitted that year were a gentle reminder of blowers, fat rear tires, and Predator Carburetors.
This 1967 Camaro is actually a 230ci, six-cylinder car that it’s owner Mike Bell threw a slew of speed parts at. A pair of Holleys capped off a Clifford intake with a same-branded camshaft, while a pair of Hooker headers directed exhaust flow. These were a few of the parts listed. The best part, snaked the whole car for it for 500 bucks. That sounds strangely familiar to a certain yellow, bow-tie-clad pony car owned by an ex-HOT ROD editor.
This 1967 Mustang Coupe is tough as nails. Owner Carrie Hensley and her husband John did a ton of work on this pony all themselves aside from shortening the nine-inch rear end bearing 4.11 gears. With speed parts from Lunati, Edelbrock, and TRW, they built the 302ci small-block engine, and also tubbed the rear to accommodate a rear set of Mickey Thompson 29×18.5×15 tires. Carrie drove the car to work on occasion, scrubbed it up for shows, and even tracked the car. If the bitchin’ Centerlines weren’t enough, that Thunderbolt-style hood sets off the street-strip theme nicely.
This jet-black 1932, three-window coupe looks as ready for a cruise down the beach to the tune of the Beach Boys as it would at a late-night grudge race in a metropolitan city center. Owner Chris Harris out of New Zealand used a Ford SVO engine topped with a Roush manifold to power the deuce. The suspension was incredibly innovative considering conversions, coilovers, and adjustable everything wasn’t a thing yet. He used a four-linked IRS and uprights of a 1984 Vette and fitted Carrera coilovers to mask the dumps in the road. After an accident at Bonneville in 1988 left Chris paralyzed, the was outfitted with hand controls so he could still drive the car. The amount of technology and creativity used to make this car in the early-mid ‘90s is stunning.
A pastor from Ozark, Missouri named Eldo Roberts was the proud owner of this 1961 Chevy truck back in 1994. He pulled it from a barn with a seized inline-six engine which was tossed in favor of a 350ci small-block, TH400 transmission and 3:90 gears.
