Kiblind team was kind enough to invite me to create short square strips and now they are printing them in these amazing little booklets. Love how they look and designed! ❤️ What is SQUARE²? Since March 2021, Kiblind has been challenging illustrators every month with SQUARE². The challenge? To realize 4 strips respecting the following golden rule: a square in the center of the first image / 4 squares / 4 sides / a declination in 4 colors. The SQUARE² box, edited to only 200 copies, gathers all the strips made by the 16 artists who have participated to the first season of SQUARE². this creative duo (lisa and dean) have established their own graphic communications business called room 44. lisa and dean are my friend’s parent and have both been in the design field for 20+ years.

2. suzanne macdonald 

Suzanne is a local architect who is my friend, Ella's mum but I have always loved her work. I remember going to Ella's house for the first time and falling in love with the open spaces and trendy environment in the house her mum created. I love every single thing about the design of her house from the restored exterior to the modern and industrial insides. her aim was to preserve Boyd (an artist) history in the design. Suzanne came and spoke to my year 12 communication design class and I was fascinated by her process and the way she considered natural light and the surrounding environment in her design. her business has been built off of word of mouth and her journey into the architecture field intrigued me. she graduated with an arts degree before completing architecture at RMIT which I found inspiring as she took a leap of faith and pursued a career that has stuck with her for the rest of her life. Suzanne’s architectural style is very unique from what I've seen before.

3. Yeye Weller

Yeye is an illustrator based in Münster, Germany. I came across his work ages ago through a design instagram account. I then preceded to follow his account and become obsessed with his quirky and fun illustrations. he is able to combine humour with bold illustrations. “Weller's stoner-friendly compositions mix gloopy, viscous shapes with sharp, angular patterns emblazoned with slogans like "Supa Kool." His goal with his artwork is to look nice, be funny, or both.”

I personally was inspired by his discussion regarding his rejection to design school in Germany. Despite being told he had ‘too little creativity’ Yeye continued to pursue his career and retry until he made it. I found his story very inspiring as it is very easy to question your own work and ability as a designer and hear criticism. 

4. Neva Hosking

Neva is an illustrator from Western Australia who I came across on Instagram. I have followed her beautiful and inspiring work for years. I love neva’s illustrations as she uses mainly physical techniques rather than digital and often combines the two media. her pencil work is amazing and she able to create amazing and lifelike pieces with one coloured pencil. her skills amaze me and she creates her beautifully chaotic designs as artwork for multiple uses. she has created many zines herself too. she is inspired by lifeforms, feelings and nature, these are the things I also like to incorporate my own illustrations.

5. Ben Grandgennet 

Ben is currently based in Brooklyn and a Deputy Art Director at The New York Times Magazine. he is graphic designer and art director. i have been following ben as i was intrigued by his work. Ben Grandgenett's design skills have impacted me as he takes an individualistic approach and is able to create certain styles of typography which stylistically reflect the content or attitude of a story in a way that goes beyond ordinary fonts. The New York Times' art director addresses current world topics which I admired. My favourite was an article 'on female rage' which discussed how females are conditioned to not get angry, captivated me by his disruptive layout. the intentions of his work are carefully crafted as he tries to associate visuals with certain elements in order to make unique connections. this skill is something I aspire to embody.
