Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX Episode 110 Subbed (Finalized)
Tumblr media
(Previously: Episodes 108-109 Subbed [Finalized])
(Check out my Subbed!GX Stream Masterpost!)
TURN-110: Tyranno Kenzan VS Fossil Dragon Jim
Jim Crocodile has noticed an outbreak of strong electromagnetic waves at the Duel Academia. Accompanied by Judai, Johan, Shou, and Kenzan, Jim decides to investigate in the jungle. As they do, some strong electromagnetic waves spring up, causing his crocodile Karen to pounce on Kenzan--and at the same time, the effects of the electromagnetic waves cause Kenzan to forget who he is and pounce on Jim.* This leads to Jim having a duel with Kenzan, and as Kenzan instinctively summons his powerful Dinosaur Monsters, Jim activates his Kaseki Yuugou -- Fossil Fusion Magic Card to summon his Fossil Dragons. *Worth noting that the pre-airing summary text here makes it sound like Karen biting Kenzan and Kenzan lunging for Jim both happened as they're looking around in the jungle, when in the episode proper, Karen biting Kenzan is what gets Jim onto the scene; wonder if that was the original idea in production...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*runs in to post this in Engrish*
Well, mates, episode 110 is now up and finalized! With Season 3 starting off with a couple of two-parters, I figured I'd take a slight breather and work on just 110 this go-round given the multiple two-parters on the way. And it's a good one, as we're introduced more to Jim Crocodile Cook (and his well-done Australian accent in the dub, for some kudos there to 4Kids [some dialogue choices for him (and Kenzan [that's not how Tail Swing works???]) aside]) while also seeing how quickly Judai seems to have recovered after his duel with O'Brien, and we see the debut of Jim's Fossils, which would go on to take a good 18 years or so before finally being printed with some buffs to them; it was always an archetype I liked. Kenzan also just spending a good 3-4 minutes growling was A+ (a shame the dub just made him talk semi-primitively, even if it mostly works), more of Jim's Engrish was just as good, and I liked how Jim and Kenzan came away with some respect for each other by the end after how offended Kenzan was by the Fossil Fusion concept. Fun times!
Animation error-wise, like with 108-109, I mostly did some quality-of-watching touch-ups around split-screens (with some of the fixes I did also allowing me to get rid of some of the ghosting in the footage), though there two card fixes I applied with Kenzan. Details below under the cut as always for the interested!
Quick housekeeping: in case you missed it, I re-released my finalized episode 1 work, as I went back and applied various card fixes that were bugging me and that I've grown to be able to fix, lol. Still shook I first started finalizing everything in 2014... 💀 Currently, I don't anticipate going back to re-finalize anything pre-84, mostly due to the annoyance of cutting/splicing stuff to get around not having the original unreleased scripts I'd keep with the ATK/DEF counter subs and whatnot thanks to a 2022 data drive failure, and hopefully it stays that way. 😅 I also applied a few minor styling fixes to the ending credit subs for 105 and 108 (noticed the text for a few names in the cast lists were scaled inconsistently) and reuploaded those; rereleased episode 1 has been posted on NAC, while re-finalized 105 and 108 will be posted there with 110.
Anywho, enjoy! I'll likely be going back to some TFSP stuff for a bit (in case you missed that news~) and then I'll dip into episodes 111-112 and Manjoume VS Amon; stay tuned!
Fixes/Edits!
As Jim first activates Fossil Fusion, we see the card first before he fades in holding it, but his thumb is missing as his fade-in starts, and then it just appears, fully faded-in, in the next frame even though the rest of him is still fading in. I fixed this in Sony Vegas by masking out his thumb and adding it to the first frame in which Jim starts fading in, then making his thumb fade in with the rest of him.
Later, as Kenzan thinks Dark Driceratops bested Jim's Skullgar, Skullgar turns around and defeats it, causing Kenzan some damage; as he reacts while his LP drop, Jim slides in on a split-screen exclaiming "Bravo!", but his split-screen slide-in starts with his split already about 50% into the shot. After that, Jim sets one card face-down and ends his turn, and as Kenzan opens his eyes and starts to growl while the split-screen ends, Jim's split starts to slide out the frame after Kenzan starts to move. Fixed the first in Sony Vegas by re-doing his slide-in to be more natural and start closer to the edge of the screen, then fixed the second by just removing the one frame where Kenzan has moved but Jim hasn't so that they move simultaneously, holding a frame once the split-screen's over a frame longer to compensate.
As #2 here leads into Kenzan taking offense at how Jim woke his dinosaur out of its sleep to use as a piece for Jim's fossil "freak," he says he'll make Jim pay for that as their match gets going for real; Judai and co look on as Jim and Kenzan stare each other down on a split-screen leading to the eyecatch (the split-screen here cut from the dub, likely for time), but Jim's split slides in unevenly compared to Kenzan's. Fixed in Vegas by redoing his split's slide-in so they both slide in evenly.
Later, after Jim uses Dowsing Burn to take out Sabersaurus, Kenzan reacts as Jim slides in on a split-screen to declare his Sample Fossil summoning, but Jim's split starts to slide in with it already about 50% of the way into the shot. Fixed this in Vegas by redoing his slide-in to make it slide in more naturally, while also redoing Kenzan moving in the background to eliminate the ghosting during this split-screen's forming.
A bit after #4, Jim uses Sample Fossil to dig up Sabersaurus from Kenzan's Cemetery to make a specimen out of it, and as we see its chains working to drag its remains up from the ground, we see Kenzan still has Sabersaurus on his Disk despite it being in his Cemetery. Fixed this first in Photoshop by cleaning up the Monster Zone in question on the shot's first frame, then threw the fixed frame into Vegas, where I then shook it along with the screen for the rest of the shot, also slightly zooming it out and fading it out as the transition from Kenzan into the dug-up Sabersaurus happens.
Shortly after, as Jim taunts Kenzan about his lovely Sabersaurus specimen, Kenzan growls in response; Jim then slides in on a split-screen to say that Sample Fossil's ATK becomes equal to Sabersaurus's, but his split again starts to slide in with 50% of it already in the shot. Fixed this in Vegas by redoing his slide-in so it slides in more naturally, and redoing Kenzan moving to again eliminate some footage ghosting.
A bit later, Kenzan activates his Treasure of Variation card, and as the close-up shot on it transitions into a split-screen splitting apart to show Kenzan behind it explaining its effect, each side of the split-screen jitters slightly in the frame before it properly starts to split apart. Fixed this in Vegas by holding the earlier frame over the jittering frame so that it properly splits apart in the next frame.
After Kenzan's next turn, as Jim wonders if the electromagnetic waves aren't behind Judai and co's exhaustion, he draws another Fossil Fusion; he smiles upon seeing it, but his smile ends up being slightly drawn onto his eye bandages. Fixed this in Vegas by just masking the eye bandages over it to keep his smile off the bandages.
(continued below due to Tumblr's dumb characters-per-block-of-text limit)
(9) After Kenzan's Brachion switches into Defense Mode from Jim summoning Skullgios, Jim is impressed by its 3000 DEF; Kenzan slides in on a split-screen to think that there's no way he can hold off an attack from Skullgios, but his split only starts to slide in the frame after Jim starts to move for it, and with it starting about 50% of the way into the shot. Fixed this in Vegas by redoing Kenzan's slide-in to start as Jim moves and slide in more naturally.
(10) As Jim has Skullgios pause its attack on Brachion, Kenzan looks up and wonders why, but as he does, we see that Brachion is on his Disk in Attack Mode despite it just going into Defense Mode. Fixed first in Photoshop as I blanked the Monster Zone in the first frame of the shot, then took it into AfterEffects to add a proxy in Defense Mode, and then took the fixed frame into Vegas to re-pan into the footage, masking in Brachion as it starts to cover the Zone up.
Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX Episodes 71 and 72 Subbed (Finalized)
(Previously: Episodes 69 and 70 Subbed [Finalized])
(Check out my Subbed!GX Stream Masterpost!)
VS the Game Champ! The Giant Battleship Tetran Takes Off
Ryusei Gin, a champion at shooter games, is sent as an assassin by the white Society*.  Judai and Gin go on to battle using a dueling system akin to space battleships.  Gin’s “Giant Battleship Tetran” gains three shields, making it fairly indestructible, and his “Boss Rush” Permanent Magic allows him to summon Giant Battleships like his Crystal Core and Big Core back-to-back.  Judai uses his mole-like “Gran Mole” to create a wormhole in the vacuum of space, but...
(*The summaries I’m translating from refer to the Society of Light as 白の結社 [shiro no kessha/white society] vs 光の結社 as intended; likely its earlier name, though since Manjoume already namedropped the Society of Light back in 67, not sure why it’s still here for now, lol.)
Destroy the Deck Destruction
The Pro Duelist known as X is sent in as an assassin by the white Society and duels Judai.  X’s strategy focuses on deck destruction, and that unique tactic makes it difficult to defeat him when first encountered.  Falling into that tactic’s trap, Judai’s put into a pinch as many of his cards are sent to his Cemetery.  And while it briefly seemed that he would break through using his Glow Moss, X is able to avoid it.  Before long, it even causes the trust he shares with his deck’s Monsters to sway...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Happy new year, everyone! Here’s to 2022 bringing us all the growth and life development we want to see for ourselves, and of course to more card game shenanigans in this franchise. 🎉
To usher in the new year, I’ve got our next finalized double release here with GX 71 and 72, which aren’t quite New Year’s-themed, but they still kinda work, haha.  71 treats us to Ryusei Gin, the first of a couple of assassins Saiou will be sending to Judai to test his potential as a threat to him, and it makes for a unique episode; Ryusei being a shooter game champion (Crunchy decided to go with "shoot ‘em ups", which also works) and incorporating that into his deck/style with the Giant Battleship/BES cards, along with the references to older Konami influential shooters like Gradius--some of which I had to brush up on as I translated a bio sheet on Ryusei!--while he and Judai duel in the Academia’s planetarium makes for an interesting setting, and I love how they worked with the BES cards’ stipulation that they lose a shield in battle by having Judai’s Heroes take one out as they go down.
72 gives us the first use of deck destruction in GX, as Pro Duelist X backs Judai into a corner and actually seems somewhat menacing with the history Ed gives us about him never losing his first duel with someone.  Judai’s big strategy of exploiting Glow Moss’s anime-only send-two-away effect using Elixirer, then Fusion Undone/De-Fusion, then Flash Fusion (which I named so and not Instant Fusion/インスタントフュージョン as Judai names it for later consistency, as it’s called 瞬間融合 [shunkan yuugou] in its next appearance when used by Ryou in 95 [kind of a mess that the other Instant Fusion being released before this one gave it a different OCG name lol]) was interesting, and also works as a light callback to Yugi’s duel vs Strings and Osiris (since X’s own cards made Glow Moss indestructible), which is also neat given upcoming events.  The dub gets a point for naming X “Howard ‘X’ Miller,” giving the milling card game term a nod, but then I don’t get why they opted to make him Sartorius’s lawyer vs a Pro Duelist (since Saiou’s connection to him that way as a manager makes sense) and Jaden was fooled into signing a thing and not coming to duel out of some worry for Manjoume... but that’s a rambling for a different post, lol.
Animation-fix-wise, worked on a fair amount of them; 71 mainly had card fixes, but also got some quick quality-of-watching ones, while 72 had more of the latter but also one or two card fixes.  And as I noted above, Asuka’s file on Ryusei was translated for the hardsub, but I’ll type it out when posting the softsub on NAC for the curious.  List below the cut, as usual!
Enjoy, folks! These are now up on NAC; I’ll start prepping for the next double release covering 73 (DINO DNA) and 74 (FROG PRINCES); stay tuned!
Fixes/Edits! (71)
For the hardsub, I translated the Ryusei file Asuka looks at after getting off the phone with Saiou just before the 99% OP.
During 99%, the episode clip used includes the shot of Sparkman preparing to attack from later on, but this shot has a frame as Sparkman slides in where the background behind him glitches and moves with him; I fixed it as I did later on, splicing out the error frame then duplicating the first frame of the shot to make up for it in Sony Vegas. (For the hardsub’s OP, as I did when originally doing this episode, I had to improvise for about 20-24 frames by adding in the shot of Sparkman approaching Big Core, as both the shots of Sparkman sliding in and Sparkman swinging his Element Sword were shorter in the episode proper.)
As Judai worries he’s being talked about behind his back, Kenzan and Shou point out how well-known he is, but as Shou starts his tale of the mythical girl shy about approaching him, his shoes at the bottom of the shot suddenly vanish as his legs jitter.  I fixed it by masking the shoes back in using Sony Vegas, masking in the sleeves of his pants slightly moving over them.
As Manjoume taunts Judai by asking if he’ll allow his dorm to be demolished, just before the split-screen between them splits, the starry background behind Judai changes to have the starry background we see on the field after the split-screen fully splits; basically, Judai’s now superimposed on the shot of the field post-split-screen rather than the background he’d had (you can tell this with how the platform they’re on appears behind Judai’s head), and this doesn’t happen on Manjoume’s side.  I fixed this in Sony Vegas by just holding Judai’s side of the split-screen on the background he’d had, then moved that along with the split instead.
As Ryusei explains his Alert Trap Card’s effect which activates a Permanent Magic on his field, Judai slides in with a split-screen surprised that it does that--but as he slides in, there’s a quick frame where his mouth moves independent of his face (looks like a pout lol).  I fixed it in Sony Vegas by just copying the frame after and moving his face into position in the error frame.
As Judai explains his Climax Hour Magic Card’s effect, we have a classic error as we see Burstlady on his field without her outfit’s shoulder strap; I fixed it using Photoshop to draw on the strap, then positioned it into place in Sony Vegas by redoing the panning on the shot.
As Ryusei’s Cyber Summon Blaster fires at Judai for his Tetran summoning, a repeat of #6 happens as we pan over to Judai’s field, with Burstlady missing her strap again; like with #6, I fixed it by just drawing on her strap, then repositioned her in Sony Vegas for the couple of frames she’s moving in before holding her still at the end of the shot.
Immediately after #7, as Judai takes the hit, we see he’s missing Burstlady in Monster Zone 4 on his Disk.  This was probably the longest fix of all, since I first used AfterEffects to slap on a proxy with a brightness increase that I keyframed down as the light faded, while both masking in the LP counter above it and applying a screen-layer effect to a mask around the Zone that would let me light it up per all the pink light around.  After the light faded, I then adjusted the proxy as Judai first moves, using Sony Vegas to keyframe the zoom-out here and fix it.  Then, as Judai moves again, I readjusted the proxy in AE again, using Vegas again to keyframe this second part of the zoom-out and fix it.
As Ryusei catches Judai thinking of aiming at his boss’s core, Judai slides in with a split-screen in surprise, but there’s a quick frame right as they start to split where they move but the split-screen border stays only on Judai’s frame, rather than properly split to show the coming shot of the field behind them, and Ryusei’s side also takes longer to split away than Judai’s versus them splitting at the same time.  I fixed this in Vegas by first copying the split border and applying it to Ryusei’s side in that first frame, applying a negative mask between them to start showing the field behind them.  Then, I adjusted Ryusei’s split by moving it a bit quicker so it would wrap up with Judai’s.
The Sparkman error I mentioned in #2 during the OP comes in proper here as Judai has him go after Tetran’s last shield; fixed the same way I noted, splicing out the error frame then duplicating the first frame of the shot to make up for it in Sony Vegas.
As Judai tells Ryusei that not knowing how a duel goes until it’s over is what makes it fun, the panning shot on him ends on him smiling, but in the last four frames of the shot, his mouth suddenly moves up to his nose, lol.  I fixed it in Vegas by just holding it on the previous frame.
As Judai reminds Ryusei about his Climax Hour about to let him summon his Neos, Judai laughs and emphasizes how twists like that make dueling fun, two things happen: there’s a few frames after Judai’s head moves to laugh where the shading on his hair and nose has a noticeable outline to it, and there’s a quick frame as their split-screen is splitting where Judai’s moves and shows him drawn incompletely.  I fixed the first in Photoshop by applying a bit more shading to cover up the outline, the second by just duplicating the previous frame pre-split to cover up the error split-screen frame.
As Judai summons Elemental Hero Neos through Climax Hour, we see Ryusei excited about it, but the Monster Zones on his Disk are colored as though his Disk is off; I fixed it by recoloring the Zones to the lighter "ON" blue, using the shot of Judai's Disk during the scene in edit #11 as reference.
Fixes/Edits! (72)
As X sees Judai’s naivete about his predicament, as Judai says he just has to destroy Trap Sluzer to stop him, the split-screen between them starts to split, but for a frame, there are two borders with a gap in between when it’s meant to be X’s split sliding off as Judai takes the screen over.  I fixed this in Vegas by using Judai’s side a frame later and then masking X’s split on top.
As X questions if Judai expected him to just refill his hand for nothing, as their split-screen splits to reveal X’s Wallet With a Hole Trap, Judai’s side of the split takes a frame longer to fully split off; I fixed it in Vegas to make Judai’s side fully split off when X’s does by removing one frame from Judai’s split, duplicating a frame of the background behind them once the split-off’s done to make up for it.
As X activates his Super Guard Permanent Magic, there are several frames at the beginning of the shot as it appears on the field where Trap Sluzer on his Disk is gone--only to reappear in the right Zone.  I fixed this in Vegas by just duplicating part of the shot once it reappears, ensuring that the lights on it were as close to the lights’ positioning earlier in the shot as possible, then masking Trap Sluzer into place.
As Judai tells X that he’s not throwing the duel so long as he sees a way out of the mess he’s in, there’s a quick frame as the rest of his Disk comes into view where the light on the bulb in the middle is off; it turns back on in the next frame.  Fixed in Vegas by just duplicating that next frame so it stays on.
As X points out that Glow Moss’s effect means Judai draws to decide what it is, only to realize that Judai’s out of cards, his head jumps as this hits--but there’s an animation error where his head as it’d been in the shot thus far is still laid over his head as it moves (noticeable when you look at his nose and neck, but also his hair).  Fixed in Vegas by just duplicating the next frame where his head’s in that same new position.
As Judai uses Fusion Undone to undo Elixirer’s fusion, as Elixirer leaves the shot, we’re left with Judai’s Disk in view, where for some reason a Fusion card is where Elixirer should be.  I fixed it in AfterEffects by applying an Elixirer proxy over it, adjusting it for brightness as the lights go on above it.
As Judai activates Flash Fusion to bring Elixirer back out for the finisher, the shot zooms out as he swings his Disk, and we see that his heroes are ordered Bubbleman, Sparkman, Featherman, Burstlady, and Clayman (Clayman behind his Common Soul card)--but this contradicts with the earlier shot where we see his Disk (”My attacks’ll cost you two cards each!”) and the first three are ordered Featherman, Sparkman, and Bubbleman.  Fixed it in AfterEffects by swapping Featherman and Bubbleman using proxies, then adjusting accordingly as the shot zooms out and Judai moves, using Photoshop to redraw the right side of the orb in the middle to cover up Bubbleman in a frame (where the original shot had Featherman literally on top of it lol).
For 73′s Preview, this one isn’t really noticeable due to the title on screen, but it’s an error that happens in the episode proper: as Saiou swings his arm, the lighter coloring on his sleeve is mistakenly colored like the sky behind him, and there’s also some of it seeping through on his fingers.  I fixed it for the episode first then clipped it for the Preview, using Photoshop to properly paint in that lighter white on his sleeve in the second frame it’s in (where the seeping on his fingers is fixed), then using Vegas to zoom it back into place in the first frame.  I would’ve tried to fix this in the Japanese video, but I’d have probably had to mask in the Japanese title, and I didn’t think I’d get it looking good.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX Episodes 69 and 70 Subbed (Finalized)
(Previously: Episodes 67 and 68 Subbed [Finalized])
(Check out my Subbed!GX Stream Masterpost!)
Chronos VS Napoleon! March of the Toy Soldiers
Interim Principal Chronos and Vice-Principal Napoleon quarrel over the abolition of the Red dorm, and the two Instructors soon decide to duel.  Three Toy Soldiers appear from Napoleon’s Army deck, and through the Forced March and Fife and Drum Corps Magic Cards, they inflict a lot of damage to Chronos.  In that moment, a power shovel* strikes the Red dorm, starting its demolition--but as Chronos uses his Antique Gear Monsters to retaliate, his carpenters begin to rebuild it.
(*The original Japanese summary refers to a wrecking ball here, but the entire episode it’s just Napoleon’s power shovel tearing at the Red dorm.)
Asuka VS Manjoume White Thunder!
Manjoume defeats the Blue students one by one, bleaching the Blue dorm white in a baffling course of action.  He goes on to say that the Society of Light, led by Saiou, will finish the academy, and Asuka duels him hoping to put a stop to that.  Manjoume’s “Hell’s White” Permanent Magic inflicts 600 damage to his opponent, in exchange for forcing him to play while displaying his hand--a strategy that throws Asuka off her game, as Manjoume wastes no time in using his Armed Dragons to corner her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving! (Or your regular Thursday if you’re not in the US.) I’ve got finalized!69 and 70 here coming in like a wrecking ball~ (Which... is actually a bit of an accurate reference, given how things change with the Society of Light plot starting here, lol.) These two episodes are fun and interesting to watch, as 69 treats us to Chronos’s first duel of Season 2 and Napoleon’s first ever, as best professor Chronos shows us more character development while standing between Napoleon and tearing down the Red dorm, and takes some... damage for it.  70 kicks the Society of Light plot we’ve been lowkey building up since 61 into gear, as Manjoume White Thunder suddenly becomes a threat and single-handedly bleaches his former Blue dorm white while everyone else was focused on the Red mess;  Asuka steps in to try and snap him out of it, her “we forge our own fates” philosophy clashing with Manjoume’s “we can’t stop fate” one, but Manjoume’s able to get Asuka overthinking her strategies (causing her to break YGO’s “don’t think about your endgame” rule) and that ultimately leads to her fated defeat as she joins Manjoume in the SoL.  She does share a good character moment with Fubuki, though, as he tells her how proud of her he is for being so determined to find him--a message that he luckily doesn’t feel a need to sing--while the moment where Judai and the others question Manjoume’s sanity is great.
Animation-fix-wise, there were several card-related fixes I worked on, mostly in 69 as 70 was pretty good about that; both also got one or two quality-of-watching fixes.  Details below the cut, as usual, along with a quick Translation Note for one of Napoleon’s lines in 69.  I also chose to remove quite a bit of the extra Italian/French words I put into Chronos’s and Napoleon’s dialogue in my original run-through of 69, since I thought it might’ve been... a bit overkill. 😅 And since at this point I’ve been consistently handling Chronos’s “[na] no ne”s with “[now,] won’t [I/it/etc]?/no?” and Napoleon’s “de aru” through having him speak more elegantly/pompously, so it’s their general speaking styles that they take issue with about each other here.
Enjoy, folks; these are now up on NAC~ Our next double-release’ll cover 71 and 72, as Judai faces the Academia’s resident game champ and a deck-destruction strategy--both are interesting episodes (and ones I haven’t revisited in a while).  Stay tuned!
Fixes/Edits/Notes! (69)
As Chronos is taking direct hits from Napoleon’s three Toy Soldiers, the third one is a bit... too direct.  But as Chronos deals with that pain, we do see that the Antique Gear Golem on his Disk is reversed, with its effect box to the left; I fixed it by applying a proxy in AfterEffects facing the right way, keyframed its zoom-out during the shot, and then masked back in the black impact lines as they passed over the card.
After Chronos summons Antique Gear Soldier, as he moves to activate Antique Gear Tank, we see a repeat of #1 with Antique Gear Golem; fixed by re-applying the proxy facing correctly, moving it along with Chronos as his Disk moves.
After having his Toy Emperor destroy Antique Gear Soldier and bearing Tank’s damage, Napoleon switches Toy Soldier to Defense Mode and sets a card to end his turn, but we have a repeat of #1--this time with his Toy Soldier.  Fixed by applying a proxy facing correctly, then re-panning one of the edited frames so it moves as the screen pans up to Napoleon.
Chronos then goes on to draw for his turn, before Napoleon cuts in to remind him of Unequal Treaty’s effect kicking in for more damage--but as their split-screen starts to split, we have a quick frame of black behind them before we see Unequal Treaty itself.  Fixed by first copying that next frame and then masking back in Chronos and Napoleon’s halves of the split-screen above it.  As the split-screen fully splits, there’s also a quick frame where Chronos’s half still lingers after Napoleon’s is gone--I fixed that by just duplicating the frame after they’re both gone so they split away together.
After having Antique Gear Engineer destroy Napoleon’s last Toy Soldier, Chronos explains its Magic/Trap-destroying effect, but we see the Antique Gear Golem on his Disk in Attack Mode--it’s still in Defense at this point, as Napoleon’s Gulliver Chain hasn’t been destroyed, and compared to Engineer in Attack Mode, you can tell they meant to put it in Defense (the card doesn’t fully cover the Monster Zone like it would in Attack Mode).  Fixed by slapping a proxy in Defense Mode on over the original card for the couple of frames it’s visible in.
As Chronos declares Gulliver Chain as the target of Engineer’s effect, we see that he has Toy Emperor and Toy Soldier on his Disk for some reason--they should be his Engineer and Golem, respectively.  Bit of a tough one to do because on top of the shot zooming out, it also rotates a bit, but still managed to fix it by first applying my Engineer and Golem proxies on a frame they were both visible in, then keyframing the zoom-out for the entire shot.  (Kind of interesting, since card errors like this one are usually common to the dub, lol.)
This was fixed for episode 70, but in the preview, as Asuka seems to take damage from Manjoume’s Armed Dragon, there’s a quick few frames showing Cyber Angel Dakini on her Disk where the card doesn’t fully cover the Monster Zone, showing part of a placeholder under it.  I fixed it by just applying a Dakini proxy covering the full Zone.
Translation Note: As I noted here, as Chronos taunts Napoleon for letting his troops’ morale briefly sink, Napoleon shoots back with “がってん承知の助" (gatten shouchinosuke)--which I adapted as “you need only leave it to Beaver.” While looking the phrase up, I got the gist that the phrase basically makes a name out of its "understood!/leave it to me!" meaning (sorta in a “no way Jose” kinda way?), as well as it being a more Edo-era saying in Japan.  My original line there was more played-straight and just translated to “I’m already aware of that,” but it doesn’t quite work with the confused/groaning looks on Kenzan et al’s faces.  So, because of that “name-ification” of the phrase and its semi-dated reference, I thought the nod to LITB (as a show I’m sure most of us millennials/Gen-Xers might remember) might be a good way to get it across, lol. (For its part, the dub didn’t bother with it, really--Bonaparte talks about his “master plan” which confuses everyone, and when asked for thoughts, Jaden’s just all “this duel’s sweet!” which, okay sure lol.)
Fixes/Edits! (70)
The Asuka clip used in 69′s edit #7 (from #3 below) was used in the clip of the episode during the OP, so I applied the fix there, as well.
As Fubuki’s impressed by his apprentice’s “all cards on the table” approach, after Momoe and Junko question his calling that an “advanced move in love,” there’s a quick frame as he moves his head where his mouth disappears.  Fixed it by just copy/pasting a later frame with his closed mouth in its place.
As Asuka imagines Manjoume attacking her Dakini with his Armed Dragon LV7 only to be countered with Doble Passé, the shot of Asuka taking the hit and Dakini’s card not fully covering the Monster Zone it’s in on her Disk comes in in full here, as does its fix.
As Asuka collapses post-duel, the screen pans over to Fubuki and the others running over, but for a few quick frames, it looks like Fubuki’s running onto the arena floor--as if the animators forgot to hide his leg behind the arena floor.  Fixed it by masking the edge of the arena floor from a couple frames later above his leg and moving it into place as the screen pans for the 3-4 frames the leg is visible.  (I thought for a second that maybe he was so desperate for her to be okay that he tried climbing up to no avail, but his upper body’s in the same position throughout, so that didn’t seem to be the case.)
Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX Episodes 67 and 68 Subbed (Finalized)
(Previously: Episodes 65 and 66 Subbed [Finalized])
(Check out my Subbed!GX Stream Masterpost!)
VS Ed (Part 1) - A New Power! Aqua Neos
After so long, Judai returns and battles Ed with the Red dorm’s demise on the line.  Ed’s D-Heroes are still powerful, while Judai has made a complete recovery from his previous loss, in high spirits as he battles with the Neos deck he says evolved by catching space waves.  He has Aqua Dolphin and E-Hero Neos evolve into Aqua Neos to destroy Dreadguy, but as he does, he goes back to his deck?! Will Judai be able to master his Neos deck?
VS Ed (Part 2) - The Fiery Flare Neos
Judai’s duel versus Ed continues.  With his Neos deck still unmastered, Judai is exposed to the D-Heroes’ direct attacks, dropping him into a 200-LP pinch.  But his Neos deck comes through with Air Hummingbird, who recovers a lot of his Life, and Flare Scarab, whose ATK increases as he’s summoned.  Later, within the new zone his Neo Space Field Magic forms, the latter makes contact with E-Hero Neos (ATK/ 2500) to call out Flare Neos...
So who else was looking forward to Asuka VS Ed
Episodes 67 and 68 have been finalized! One of a bunch of double-releases I want to work on to make up for some delays, this is an interesting duel all things considered, as Judai challenges Ed fresh off his jump into space (Misawa, I feel your “nitpicky” pain) and rediscovering his inner kid--which he uses to try and break through to Ed on how he shouldn’t use his dad’s D-Heroes for revenge, and he realizes that he was the one burdening his D-Heroes with fate.  A neat exchange that dissolves the antagonism that was going on between Judai and Ed there.  Our resident cult member Manjoume also starts turning some gears in Ed’s head about Saiou and the Society of Light in 67, and after seeing Judai’s new power for himself, he decides to stick around hoping to clear things up with Saiou.
Fun note: the GX manga started being serialized in Japan as these episodes originally aired, as the credits are updated to include that. (Though Yugipedia puts the original run starting on December 5th, 2005, while 67 aired on January 11th 2006, but 🤷🏽‍♂️) Also, the Flare Neos scene is a favorite, as I first saw it when I first watched the flashback in 105 (since I started watching GX in Japanese around the mid-70s on Nebs.TV back in the day lol), so it was nice getting to it in 68 proper when I first subbed 68 some years ago.  (Also, Gil Bo Noh did some Key Animation work in 68, though the episode as a whole has really good art; I’m inclined to think the one shot as Ed has the Doubleguy Token hit Judai directly pre-eyecatch was his doing, though I’m not sure if it’s confirmed somewhere, lol.)
In terms of animation fixes, I did work on a fair amount of them for each episode, though moreso in 68; mainly card-related fixes (including one that was just fixed in 59 as well), but I did do a few quick footage fixes, and in 67 I also translated the signpost Napoleon leaves at the Red dorm (as shown in 66′s preview for it); list below the cut, as usual, if you’re curious.
Enjoy; getting some work started on 69 and 70 for the next double-release for Chronos VS Napoleon (and more development for best professor) and Asuka VS Manjoume White Thunder, which should be fun.
Fixes/Edits! (67)
As mentioned for 66′s preview to 67, for the hardsub, I translated the signpost that Napoleon drops at the Red dorm about their upcoming duel with Ed.  I blanked the sign and applied the translation in Photoshop for a frame, then readjusted it to redo the semi-rotating zoom-out in Sony Vegas.  The script that I’ll release won’t have a Side-Note subtitle for it as Kenzan pretty much reads it in the next shot, but I’ll type it out here as a Translation Note: “NOTICE - Tomorrow morning, the Red dorm will face an Academy representative in a duel. Should the Red dorm’s own representative lose this bout, the Red dorm will be demolished. This will not be up for debate!”
Also for the hardsub, I applied my translation to the signpost behind Kenzan as he turns to cry at Asuka’s bravery in accepting the duel for them.  In Photoshop, I first took the first frame of the shot and blanked the signpost, cutting/pasting the left half of the signpost to mirror it into a right half to have a full thing to work with, and then applied the text layers.  I then threw that into Sony Vegas, where I first re-panned the frame for the rest of the shot, then worked to mask Kenzan and everything non-signpost above/around my edit to make everything seamlessly blend in.  As Kenzan turns, I adjusted the mask on him to account for his moving head and mouth.  Came out well!
Once Judai runs in and stops Asuka and Ed’s duel (jerk), as he runs past Ed to get to Asuka and co., there’s a quick frame where the top of his hair’s miscolored (a semi-recurring error lol).  Quick fix; I just recolored it back in Photoshop and threw it back in the video.
Now, this one was fun... As we see Judai meeting the Neo-Spacians in his flashback, he stops to think about Winged Kuriboh being the last Spirit he needs and remembers his cards turning white after his last duel with Ed--where Hero Kid is shown as a Normal Monster instead of an Effect Monster, as it was in 59.  Bit of a complex approach, as I first went to fix this in 59 (and refinalized it accordingly) and my memory of the process there is a bit hazy since it’s been a few weeks, but iirc I did it there by first redoing the fade from Judai to his cards--done by redrawing some of the arena background behind him in Photoshop so I could mask a few looped hair-swishy Judai frames over it in Sony Vegas and move him down a bit, as he originally moved slightly during the fade--and by moving my Hero Kid proxy into position and fading it into view.  I then also keyframed the proxy’s movement up until it turns fully white, using a solid white-colored clip that I copied its movement to for it to fade into (while also masking in the original fade so that the rest of the cards faded in properly, and also masking in the black edges of Hero Kid’s original card in the shot so my proxy blended in more), and at that point the original clip takes over.  All in all, it took a couple nights to do, and then I applied much of the same work into the 67 flashback clip, where I just added a white layer to fade it in from white as originally done, then made some adjustments to account for some altered frame positioning before letting the original clip continue once Hero Kid faded to white.  Came out well! Here’s a gif to show off how it looks in 59, while this one shows it in 67′s flashback. [Side-Note: it’s odd that this error happened (and isn’t corrected even by the flashback in 105) since 99%’s Season 1 visuals show it as an Effect Monster, but at least they weren’t as wrong as the dub was with these lol]
As Judai summons out Aqua Dolphin on his first turn, we get to see the cards in his hand, but they’re all facing the wrong way--with the name boxes by his thumb instead of them being on the cards’ top.  I created proxies for the cards he has--Hero Kid (this time its the OCG art), Heated Heart, Attack Nullification/Negate Attack, Edgeman/Bladedge (already made this one), and Fake Hero, and I needed to tweak the tint on the card layer I was using in Photoshop to account for Magic and Trap Cards in this Series 3 template for the card layouts at the time [since the guy who made it never made one for M/Ts as he’d said he would on DeviantArt lol]--and applied them in AfterEffects, adjusting them as he moves his hand until he turns the cards so that their backs are facing us.
As Ed loses LP due to Aqua Dolphin’s effect destroying the Diehardguy in his hand, there’s a quick frame where we see his Disk’s Monster Zones and Diamondguy is conspicuously missing in Zone 4 (we do see it there as early as Diehardguy appearing on the field for Aqua Dolphin’s effect); easy fix, as I applied my proxy there in AfterEffects.
As Judai draws for his first turn after Mausoleum of the Emperor is activated, we see that he draws... Mausoleum of the Emperor? It’s actually supposed to be Neos, as he goes on to summon it using the former’s effect.  Fixed by making a Neos proxy in Photoshop using the anime art, then applied it in AfterEffects, adjusting for the couple of frames it moves in until Judai turns it around.
As Ed seizes on Aqua Neos leaving Judai wide open by having his three D-Heroes hit him directly, there’s a slight repeat of #5 with Ed’s hand, except while the Dark City and Destiny Signal cards he has are reversed like Judai’s were, the Elemental Recharge he has on top... is facing upward, weirdly.  To fix this, I first made proxies for all three and applied them in AfterEffects for one frame, which I then took into Sony Vegas and re-did the zoom-out on it as Diehardguy slides into view while Ed shrinks until he’s out of the shot.
Fixes/Edits! (68)
During the brief pre-OP recap of Ed’s direct attacks, I reprised the last fix listed above for 67.
As Judai activates Common Soul and the shot zooms out to show him, there’s a quick frame where Bubbleman’s card jitters on his Disk a little before it moves again as Judai starts to move.  Easy fix, as I just masked it in from the previous video frame to hold it before he moves.
After Common Soul powers up Bubbleman with Flare Scarab’s ATK, Judai has him attack Doubleguy, but as he declares the attack in dramatic fashion, there’s a quick frame where his closed mouth appears on top of his open mouth.  I fixed it by just using Judai from the previous frame, zooming him out slightly to put it in place for this one, and then just masking his mouth in over the original frame. (Happened to notice it as I was timing the sub line here and figured why not fix it)
After Ed brings back Dreadguy through Judai’s Shallow Grave and explains his effect, as he begins to mention who he’ll bring back, he lifts his Disk, but two things happen: first, a quick frame where we see Defendguy in Zone 2 on his Disk, then we see Defendguy in the third Monster Zone for the rest of the shot--but that’s where Dreadguy should actually be (as we saw Defendguy in Zone 4 a bit earlier).  Easy fix; for the first case, I just blanked the second Zone in Photoshop, while I placed a Dreadguy proxy over Defendguy in the second case.
After Ed summons Diamondguy and Diehardguy in Defense Mode through Dreadguy’s effect, as he explains that his DEF will equal all his D-Heroes’ ATK, we see that Diamondguy and Diehardguy are missing on his Disk, as they’re supposed to be in Zones 1 and 2.  Fixed by just adding their proxies in AfterEffects.
As Ed summons Dogmaguy and orders him to attack Judai’s Flare Scarab, we see his Disk with Dogmaguy in his fourth Monster Zone when we see later that it’s in his second Monster Zone.  Bit of a fun one as I first blanked Zone 4 in Photoshop and added the Dogmaguy proxy to Zone 2 in AfterEffects, and then I had to play with the whooshing black background to make it all blend in--in Sony Vegas, I used a solid black layer that I masked into the shape of the moving bits of black, then moved it along the screen so it’d be over the newly placed card as needed, tweaking the opacity accordingly depending on how thick it was while passing over, and boom, fixed.
As Judai draws for his first turn after Dogmaguy shows up, Ed slides in on a horizontal split-screen about to let him know about Dogmaguy’s effect, but for a quick frame, the split-screen border doesn’t split for each Judai half; it’s stuck in the middle as Ed’s shot starts to appear.  I fixed it in Sony Vegas by holding the shot of Ed while I masked in Judai’s two halves on top, then applied the border to each half in two other video layers over them.  I also continued to move Judai’s lower half along as the split-screens moved away to fully show Ed, just because some of the coloring on Judai’s arm was a little faded.
Immediately after #7, as the screen splits from Ed to the field view for Ed to explain Dogmaguy’s effect as it activates, there’s a slight repeat where the split-screen border is still stuck in the middle for a frame--except this time, both halves of Ed’s screen have their borders, and also we don’t see Judai behind the split-screen even though we should given the opening in the split-screen would show the tip of his Disk and his left leg, as we see in the next frame when the split-screen splits a little more.  There’s also a second error here where the Defense-Mode Hero Kid on Judai’s field is shown reversed with its effect box pointing to the right, as the card should have its name box facing right to match its position on Judai’s Disk.  I chose to fix the second issue first, so I applied a proxy in AfterEffects, masking in Hero Kid’s right leg over it, and also masking in the card’s original borders around the proxy to blend it in more, before I then adjusted it accordingly as the screen shook from Dogmaguy’s effect reaching Judai, blurring it as needed.  Once this was fixed, I then used a frame from it as I masked both halves of Ed’s split-screen over it to get rid of the middle border.
