actually can we talk about child avatars in tma because i love that they never really go for the “creepy child” archetype (except, ironically enough, with agnes at hill top road, who wasnt really doing anything. if anything, hill top road was a condemnation of that trope and how well-off assholes need to learn some compassion for children). it’s never like “this fucked up and evil child was just Born Wrong (look at their fucked up autistic body language!)” its always “hey something really horrible happened to them and no one was there to help.” jon and martin even have a whole conversation about callum like “well shit. that’s an actual literal child he obviously can’t be blamed like an adult could.”
there’s also something in there about how these kids are never a threat to adults. callum was a Watcher in the eyepocalypse, and could have theoretically hurt or killed Watched adults probably, but the show never gives us that. the only view we get of him is from two adults that mostly just wish things were better for him. there’s a constant undercurrent of “this problem could easily be solved if any of their parents or teachers put in the effort to stop to it” which is, you know, true of all bullying.
