To change anything about your life, make a Clear Decision First. Then stick to that Decision No Matter What. *Before our wedding, I made a decision to be faithful to my wife no matter what. When temptation knocks, I dont need to think anymore because I already made a decision to be faithful. *Before my kids were born, I made a decision that I will always go to the graduation of my children no matter what. My dad worked very hard for our family but never came to my graduations, not a single one. I wanted to change that for my own kids. I missed speaking opportunities doing so, but it was all worth it. So far, I only missed one moving up only because I was hospitalized. *When I started speaking, I made a decision that even if I just inspire one person in an audience of 1,000, I will speak no matter what to do the job I was put here on earth to do. Here is the most important lesson I learned in my twenties, when I was 22. I was relatively successful at that age so a friend, who was concerned for me, told me something I Needed to Hear. I can still remember that moment vividly in a bar in El Pueblo. He said, “Jayson alam mo, ang galing mo! Compared sa maraming 22 year olds, mas angat ka sa kanila.” I was alarmed when he said that because I have a feeling there is going to be a jabbing punchline. Sure enough… “Pero alam mo, kapag dating mo ng 32 years old, ganyan ka pa din! Kapag dating mo ng 42 years old, ganyan ka pa din!” “Wala ka nang improvement… kasi ang Yabang mo eh! Ang bata mo pa lang, hindi ka na nakikikinig!” I got offended when he said that. I have steam coming out of my ears and I was about to deliver a glaring comeback. Then he said, “Huwag ka munang magsalita.” I was about to speak and he cut me off again. “Nguyain mo muna un sinasabi ko. Itulog mo muna.” I was angry but controlled myself and kept quiet. I didn’t speak the whole time we were there. Today, after 10 years… (okay, it’s a little bit longer than that) Nginunguya ko pa din yun sinabi niya sakin. If someone says something you need to hear, not just what you want to hear, listen and nguya muna. Unless you want to grow older without growing in maturity. Huwag “Mema” Mema-Sabi lang. Baka naman Mema-Pulot tayo. That friend who said that to me years ago was @visionerickson He would eventually start the company Cornerstone Entertainment, and become one of the most successful in his field. Let me tell you my hotdog sandwich story. When I was struggling in business, I tried putting up a hotdog stall in an event. There were like 5k attendees so we prepared a lot of hot dog sandwiches. It was an afternoon session but with no break so only a few bought. I was left with hundreds of hotdogs. The last hour of the event, I went inside briefly to listen. I was having all these negative thoughts - the money I would lose, my effort wasted, another failure, and my favorite - “why me?” My last resort was prayer. I said Lord, I know it’s impossible now, but help me sell all my hotdogs. At that moment, a miracle happened. The speaker said, “Let us take a 15 minute break.” During that break, we sold out. Hundreds of hotdogs gone in minutes. You may be in the same situation, but you may be one prayer away from your breakthrough. Rather than being negative and complain... make PRAYER your first resort. What is your passion? For me, speaking was never my passion. Shark Tank’s Mark Cuban said, “Don’t follow your passion, follow your effort.” If you follow your effort, you will eventually become good at what you do. And when you are getting better and better at something, you become more passionate about it. _ I hated speaking when I was starting, but I was put in a spot where I need to speak to get more sales for our company. Even though I wasn’t any good, I gave my best to the job given to me. I have no idea that I will be a professional speaker one day. _ Don’t keep looking at what others have or are doing. I thank God that I’ve never missed any of my kids’ moving up or graduation. There were times I had to turn down speaking engagements or work just to attend. Why? Because my dad never attended any of mine and that probably had an effect on me. _ I know my dad loves me but he prioritized work over attending my graduation. Maybe that’s why when I was in 4th year high school, I was 48/52 in ranking in our class. The only award I received in school was the Loyalty Award. _ To all parents out there, there will always be more work, your business will always be there, and meetings are endless. However, this only happens once a year. Time flies. Next year, my eldest will be going to high school already. _ There is no such thing as being busy or no time. No Time = Not a Priority. You will always find time to the most important things in life. “WHY WORRY?” -Jayson Lo How did I become a professional worrier? 1. The Enemy Within Me The real enemy is my inner me. I have so much doubt, fear, and unbelief that I am only surviving, not living. It’s not what's happening that is creating anxiety. It’s how I think about it. How can I have peace when my inner me doesn’t have any place for it? I have to remember that, “Nothing changes until I do.” 2. The World Around Me I live in an age of anxiety. Marketing is making a ton of money using fear tactics designed to make me anxious. The fear of loss is more powerful than the promise of gain. What am I taking in from the outside that is draining my faith? Hmmm... for one, I have to stop watching bad news. 3. The People Around Me I’m tired of comparing myself to others. A lot of people have online personas that makes their life seem perfect compared to mine. I will stop looking at what they have and be grateful with what I have. When someone doesn't like me, IT DOESN'T MATTER! What’s better? I have to move from worrying about what people think of me into realizing they are not thinking of me at all! The good news? If I’m good at worrying, I’m going to be great at dreaming. It’s the same mind and imagination doing opposite things. What if I stop worrying and start BELIEVING? What if I stop worrying and start PLANNING? What if I stop worrying and start LIVING? I hate writing so much… but I wrote 4 books that has been read by over 150,000 people. I hate taking videos, as in! But my videos have reached dozens of millions of viewers. When I started speaking, I hated it with a vengeance. I was like the late great Fernando Poe Jr… laging nakapamulsa onstage because was so afraid of speaking. Today, I have done over 3,000 talks and speak 200-250 times a year. I’m saying this because everyone telling you “Do what you love and you will never work a single day in your life” is not telling you the whole story. To do what you love, you need to do things that you do not like or at times you hate… because you are loyal to the very thing you love. Ever since, my first love was to INSPIRE people. Congratulations to Hidilyn Diaz for winning the first Olympic gold medal for the Philippines! Grabe such an inspiration! All the hard work finally paid off (yes I cried too). Her bruised hands show that Commitment is what turns a dream into reality. But I notice that she always commits herself to the Lord first. In her interview with @gretchenho “What will you do with all the cash incentives you will receive?” Her first answer was to Tithe. Proverbs 16:3 NIV Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans. I’m sure it’s not just her tithes that she commits to the Lord. When she won, she screamed, cried, and the first words she uttered were “Thank You Lord!” while clasping her hands. (Watch the replay). Another word for this sign is “BUY NOW, PAY FOREVER.” Don’t fall for this. This is one of the biggest DEBT TRAPS of all. If you cannot pay at least 30% downpayment for a car, it means you cannot afford it. It is way beyond your means. And the free 3 years service plus 1 month amortization is not worth amortizing your future. Remember, there is a huge difference between looking successful and being successful. “Consistency beats Intensity!” This is my 110th push up today. I was supposed to do just 100 but my beautiful photographer missed taking my pic so I have to do 10 more. As much as I applaud those who accepted the 25 push up challenge, I don’t think 25 straight is for me. If I do 25 straight, I won’t feel my arms anymore and won’t be able to do another 75, however, if I do only ten times per set, I can reach 100 easily.
