12 Terminal Commands
Every Web Developer Should Know
The terminal is one of the foremost vital productivity tools in a developer's arsenal. Mastering it will have an awfully positive impact on your work flow, as several everyday tasks get reduced to writing a straightforward command and striking Enter. In this article we've ready for you a set of UNIX system commands that may assist you get the foremost out of your terminal. a number of them square measure inbuilt, others square measure free tools that square measure reliable and may be put in but a moment.
Curl
Curl may be a program line tool for creating requests over HTTP(s), FTP and dozens of different protocols you will haven't detected concerning. It will transfer files, check response headers, and freely access remote information.
In net development curl is usually used for testing connections and dealing with RESTful APIs.
# Fetch the headers of a URL. curl -I http://google.com HTTP/1.1 302 Found Cache-Control: private Content-Type: text/html; charset=UTF-8 Referrer-Policy: no-referrer Location: http://www.google.com/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=0fCKWe6HCZTd8AfCoIWYBQ Content-Length: 258 Date: Wed, 09 Aug 2017 11:24:01 GMT # Make a GET request to a remote API. curl http://numbersapi.com/random/trivia 29 is the number of days it takes Saturn to orbit the Sun.
Curl commands can get much more complicated than this. There are tons of options for controlling headers, cookies, authentication, and more.
Tree
Tree may be a little instruction utility that shows you a visible illustration of the files during a directory. It works recursively, going over every level of nesting and drawing a formatted tree of all the contents. this fashion you'll quickly skim and notice the files you're trying to find.
tree . ├── css │ ├── bootstrap.css │ ├── bootstrap.min.css ├── fonts │ ├── glyphicons-halflings-regular.eot │ ├── glyphicons-halflings-regular.svg │ ├── glyphicons-halflings-regular.ttf │ ├── glyphicons-halflings-regular.woff │ └── glyphicons-halflings-regular.woff2 └── js ├── bootstrap.js └── bootstrap.min.js
There is also the option to filter the results using a simple regEx-like pattern:
tree -P '*.min.*' . ├── css │ ├── bootstrap.min.css ├── fonts └── js └── bootstrap.min.js
Tmux
According to its Wiki, Tmux may be a terminal electronic device, that translated in human language would mean that it is a tool for connecting multiple terminals to one terminal session.
It helps you to switch between programs in one terminal, add split screen panes, and connect multiple terminals to a similar session, keeping them in adjust. Tmux is particularly helpful once functioning on a far off server, because it helps you to produce new tabs while not having to log in once more.
Disk usage - du
The du command generates reports on the area usage of files and directories. it's terribly straightforward to use and may work recursively, rummaging every directory and returning the individual size of each file. A common use case for du is once one in every of your drives is running out of area and you do not understand why. Victimization this command you'll be able to quickly see what proportion storage every folder is taking, therefore finding the most important memory saver.
# Running this will show the space usage of each folder in the current directory. # The -h option makes the report easier to read. # -s prevents recursiveness and shows the total size of a folder. # The star wildcard (*) will run du on each file/folder in current directory. du -sh * 1.2G Desktop 4.0K Documents 40G Downloads 4.0K Music 4.9M Pictures 844K Public 4.0K Templates 6.9M Videos
There is also a similar command called
df
(Disk Free) which returns various information about the available disk space (the opposite of du).
Git
Git is far and away the foremost standard version system immediately. It’s one among the shaping tools of contemporary internet dev and that we simply could not leave it out of our list. There area unit many third-party apps and tools on the market however most of the people choose to access unpleasant person natively although the terminal. The unpleasant person CLI is basically powerful and might handle even the foremost tangled project history.
Tar
Tar is the default Unix tool for working with file archives. It allows you to quickly bundle multiple files into one package, making it easier to store and move them later on.
tar -cf archive.tar file1 file2 file3
Using the -x option it can also extract existing .tar archives.
tar -xf archive.tar
Note that almost all alternative formats like .zip and .rar can't be opened by tar and need alternative command utilities like unfasten.
Many trendy operating system systems run associate expanded version of tar (GNU tar) that may additionally perform file size compression:
# Create compressed gzip archive. tar -czf file.tar.gz inputfile1 inputfile2 # Extract .gz archive. tar -xzf file.tar.gz
If your OS doesn't have that version of tar, you can use
gzip
,
zcat
or
compress
to reduce the size of file archives.
md5sum
Unix has many inbuilt hashing commands together with
md5sum
,
sha1sum
and others. These program line tools have varied applications in programming, however most significantly they'll be used for checking the integrity of files. For example, if you've got downloaded associate degree .iso file from associate degree untrusted supply, there's some likelihood that the file contains harmful scripts. To form positive the .iso is safe, you'll generate associate degree md5 or alternative hash from it.
md5sum ubuntu-16.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso 0d9fe8e1ea408a5895cbbe3431989295 ubuntu-16.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso
You can then compare the generated string to the one provided from the first author (e.g. UbuntuHashes).
Htop
Htop could be a a lot of powerful different to the intrinsic prime task manager. It provides a complicated interface with several choices for observation and dominant system processes.

Ln
Links in UNIX operating system square measure the same as shortcuts in Windows, permitting you to urge fast access to bound files. Links square measure created via the ln command and might be 2 types: arduous or symbolic. Every kind has totally different properties and is employed for various things (read more).
Here is associate example of 1 of the various ways that you'll be able to use links. as an instance we've a directory on our desktop referred to as Scripts. It contains showing neatness organized bash scripts that we have a tendency to ordinarily use. on every occasion we wish to decision one in every of our scripts we'd need to do this:
~/Desktop/Scripts/git-scripts/git-cleanup
Obviously, this is isn't very convinient as we have to write the absolute path every time. Instead we can create a symlink from our Scripts folder to /usr/local/bin, which will make the scripts executable from all directories.
sudo ln -s ~/Desktop/Scripts/git-scripts/git-cleanup /usr/local/bin/
With the created symlink we can now call our script by simply writing its name in any opened terminal.
git-cleanup
SSH
With the ssh command users will quickly hook up with a foreign host and log into its UNIX operating system shell. This makes it doable to handily issue commands on the server directly from your native machine's terminal.
To establish a association you just got to specify the proper science address or URL. The primary time you hook up with a replacement server there'll be some style of authentication.
ssh username@remote_host
If you want to quickly execute a command on the server without logging in, you can simply add a command after the url. The command will run on the server and the result from it will be returned.
ssh username@remote_host ls /var/www some-website.com some-other-website.com
There is a lot you can do with SSH like creating proxies and tunnels, securing your connection with private keys, transferring files and more.
Grep
Grep is the standard Unix utility for finding strings inside text. It takes an input in the form of a file or direct stream, runs its content through a regular expression, and returns all the matching lines.
This command comes in handy once operating with massive files that require to be filtered. Below we tend to use grep together with the date command to look through an oversized log file and generate a brand new file containing solely errors from nowadays.
// Search for today's date (in format yyyy-mm-dd) and write the results to a new file. grep "$(date +"%Y-%m-%d")" all-errors-ever.log > today-errors.log
Another nice command for operating with strings is
sed
. It’s additional powerful (and additional complicated) than grep and may perform nearly any string-related task together with adding, removing or replacement strings.
Alias
Many OS commands, together with some featured during this article, tend to urge pretty long when you add all the choices to them. to create them easier to recollect, you'll produce short aliases with the alias bash inbuilt command:
# Create an alias for starting a local web server. alias server="python -m SimpleHTTPServer 9000" # Instead of typing the whole command simply use the alias. server Serving HTTP on 0.0.0.0 port 9000 ...
The alias are offered as long as you retain that terminal open. to create it permanent you'll add the alias command to your .bashrc file. What The Font? – Understanding Typefaces On The Web
Do you operate a website, send out electronic newsletters or e-mail campaigns? Have you ever experimented with the different fonts (typefaces) available? If you have, you probably discovered there are numerous fonts available on your computer – in some cases 100-200 or more. How then do you decide which font to use?
This article will give you a brief overview of choosing fonts for the internet, so that the next electronic piece of information you send achieves the desired effect.
Where the Font Do We Start?
First, even though there are thousands of fonts available to us, each computer usually only has a hundred or so installed for use. Different operating systems, and various other files or programs you obtain can install various fonts on your computer and add to that number. Those fonts are usually compatible across programs, meaning you will be able to use all of your system fonts in any program. Let’s say your computer came pre-installed with 150 fonts. Then you bought a common software program that added 50 more fonts to your computer. You now have 200 fonts you will be able to use in any program that is designed to allow font selection.
Isn’t that great? You instantly have more fonts to choose from. If you’re working in print materials or graphics, then you actually do have the freedom to choose whatever fonts you want. However, if you are not printing the final version but instead delivering your material via the internet, whether it be on a website, by email, or any other type of electronic media, you don’t actually have as much freedom as you may think. There are several factors to take into consideration that could influence your choice, including perception, usability and availability.
Perception.
The typeface that you select needs to accurately reflect the mood of your message. Do you want the tone conveyed to your reader to be formal or informal, friendly or serious, professional or playful? If the message is of a professional and formal nature, then your font should accurately portray that. But if the message is to a group of friends inviting them to a party, you can have a little fun and take a more informal approach with your fonts. Always consider the audience for which the piece is intended, and then choose a font that achieves the perception you desire.
Usability.
After you have established the intended audience for your message, make sure they can actually read it! Many fonts are hard to read simply because they are so small in size (like 8 point or 10 point). Cursive and italic fonts can be hard on the eyes and are strongly discouraged for the purposes of main bodies of text. Italics should only be used for emphasis or as graphical elements. You also don’t want your font too large, as this can make it difficult for the eyes to scan across a large body of text. There are many fonts available intended specifically for headings and logo text that would be inappropriate for the main body of a message. To maximize usability, make sure to choose a font that is legible and easy on the eyes.
Availability.
This is the most easily overlooked aspect of font selection and can result in completely unexpected results. To insure the recipient sees the same message style you created, the fonts you use must be available on their computer. When you create a website for example, the HTML code will “call” the font that is supposed to be displayed. This tells your browser program what font it should display on that particular page. Even though you may have 200 fonts installed on your computer and you see your fonts fine and dandy, that doesn’t mean that the person on the other end viewing your website has the exact same fonts as you. In a case where he doesn’t, his browser will substitute a different font of its own choosing, which could completely change their perception of your intended message. At the very least, they may think you were sloppy in putting your material together. Email programs, and electronic newsletters, all work the same way. So bottom line, you need to use fonts that you are positive your entire web audience will have available on their computer. We call these “Web-Safe” fonts.
With thousands of fonts out there, you’re probably thinking, “No big deal, there are still plenty of choices”. Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there are only 9. Yes, you read that correctly, there are only NINE web-safe fonts that you can be assured are on every single computer out there! Those fonts are Arial, Arial Black, Courier New, Comic Sans, Georgia, Impact, Tahoma, Times New Roman, Trebuchet, and Verdana. Let’s take a couple of minutes to understand the differences in these fonts.
There are two basic types of fonts; serif or sans serif. Serif by definition has a fine line finishing off the main strokes of a letter, or letters may end with a rounded tip. And “sans” is a French term meaning “without”, so in the case of sans serif it would be without those fine lines. The most common serif font is Times New Roman and the most common sans serif font is Arial, both of which are web-safe fonts. Of the nine web-safe fonts there are only 3 serif fonts; Courier New, Georgia and Times New Roman. Serif fonts in very small text sizes can be hard to read, therefore caution should be used when selecting those for small print.
Arial (properly pronounced "are-ree-al")
Arial was introduced as the default typeface for Windows 3.1 when it was released by Microsoft in the early 1990s. It is not difficult to read unless used in very small sizes, and it is the most popular sans serif font today. It is however quite plain, and people tend to get bored of Arial because they see it every where. But, since it’s so widely available, easy to read, and the default for Microsoft products, it is a great font to use for main content areas of your marketing materials, newsletters, websites, etc.
Arial Black
Arial Black is one of many versions of Arial, released with Internet Explorer 3. It is a bolder font than Arial and is great for headings and short sections of text that require emphasis.
Courier New
Courier New, a serif font, was primarily a font used in old typewriters. Not normally used as main bodies of text, it is still used to display code in documents or when the writer wants the old-fashioned typewriter look in their document.
Comic Sans
Comic Sans started shipping with Windows 95 as a preinstalled font. Designed to look like comic book lettering, the font was created for informal copy. Regarded today as unprofessional, this sans serif font is not recommended for materials of a professional nature. Comic Sans became a more popular font when it started being used as the text inside the tags on Beanie Babies!
Georgia
Georgia, a serif font, was created for Microsoft in 1993 to provide a clean font for use on the web that would display well even in small sizes. Georgia font letters are taller than most other web-safe fonts, making them easier to read when used in smaller sizes. Georgia is a great alternative when you’re tired of traditional Times New Roman, but still want a serif font.
Impact
Impact is a very bold sans serif font. By it’s name, it was designed to impact the reader, and is therefore recommended only for headings, small blocks of text, areas on the page that you want to grab the readers eye. Because of it’s thick block style, Impact looks best when there is plenty of space around it otherwise it looks cluttered.
Tahoma
Tahoma, a very close cousin of Verdana, was designed in 1999 for Microsoft. It is so similar to Verdana that many don’t see the difference in the fonts. Mainly, Tahoma keeps its lettering tighter so that text does not spread out as far as Verdana does. Tahoma is a great font option for those needing a sans serif font but who are getting bored of Arial.
Times New Roman
Times New Roman is the most widely used serif font, developed in 1931 for use by The Times newspaper in London. It has remained a very popular font for setting type in books, magazines, newspapers, etc. The U.S. State Department has been using Times New Roman 14 point on all diplomatic documents since 1994, replacing their old font of choice Courier New 12 point.
Trebuchet (properly pronounced "treb-u-shet”
Trebuchet was designed in 1996 for Microsoft and is a popular sans serif font for those bored with the plain appearance of Arial. Having a definite style all it’s own, Trebuchet is easy to read for large or small type and works well for main bodies of text. Due to its unique styling though, it can be seen as a feminine font and if your audience is all men they may not relate well to that font.
Verdana
Verdana, designed for Microsoft in 1996 is probably the most easy to read web-safe sans serif font available. With its taller lettering, and more evenly spaced letters it can be easily read in larger sizes as well as small sizes. It does extend the width of text on a page, so it’s great for filling design that have a lot of space with a small amount of copy.
What Font do YOU Want?
Now that you understand the differences between the 9 web-safe fonts, which one will you choose for your internet communications? If you’re looking for a serif font, then Georgia is our recommendation. It is the clearest serif font on the web, since it was designed for just that purpose. If you are looking for a sans serif font, Verdana is the clearest on screen font for readability and is our number one recommendation, with good old Arial pulling up a close second.
Thanks and regards,

#1yrago Facebook Domination vs. Self-Determination
We're months removed from the Cambridge Analytica scandal and the public outrage of #DeleteFacebook, and new information continues to surface about Facebook's sloppy handling of data and hunger for surveillance. Last month, we learned about an Orwellian patent that might allow Facebook to track you via mobile microphone. Though some have cast doubt on the reports, mobile spyware like the now-infamous Alphonso do track mobile devices via sound emitted by TVs.
Yale Privacy Lab has been warning about proximity tracking via mobile sensors and microphones, and Exodus Privacy's excellent scanner will help you find nasty trackers that utilize similar spy methods. The only way to really dodge Facebook's lidless eye, however, is jumping ship from the social network to a privacy-respecting replacement.
There is no shortage of alternatives, but you won't find surveillance sanctuary in Facebook-owned Instagram or ad-powered, centralized networks like Nextdoor. Instead, you'll have to jump into the "Fediverse", a constellation of Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS) replacements.
Mastodon is the fastest-growing of the FOSS social stars, and its links to the rest of the Fediverse are strengthened by the new ActivityPub standard. In a recent blog post, lead developer Eugen Rochko (@Gargron) sums it up nicely: "The social network that is Mastodon isn't really Mastodon. It's bigger. It's any piece of software that implements ActivityPub. That software can be wildly different in how it looks and what it does! But the social graph - what we call the people and their connections - is the same."
Are we really witnessing the origin of an all-new, all-different social Web? For deeper insight into the Fediverse, read my short interview with Eugen, below.
What is Mastodon and how is it different from social networks such as Facebook and Twitter?
Mastodon is a decentralized social network that uses standard interoperability protocols and is completely [FOSS]. What this means is that anyone can run a Mastodon server, and the users of those servers can talk to each other. More than that, non-Mastodon servers are also part of this network if they conform to the same protocols. This means that Mastodon is more future-proof than Facebook or Twitter: Even if Mastodon-the-software falls out of fashion, the network can be simply continued by other interoperable software. You don't have to tear out your entire social graph to have all friends migrate to something new if that happens. Furthermore, Mastodon allows self-determination and control. When you run a server, it's yours. Your rules, your community, hosted on your hardware... you don't depend on anybody, definitely not on a [Silicon Valley headquarters]. There are a lot of other differences to Facebook and Twitter too.
Where did Facebook go wrong as far as privacy is concerned? How can federated social networks do better?
Facebook is a vacuum for private information. It uses dark UX patterns to solicit every detail of your life from you, but also from your friends. It also builds shadow profiles about people even if they don't use the platform, through e.g. the contact books that people let it access, or from social sharing buttons on random websites. It's quite easy NOT to do that. If you don't intend to advertise to people then you don't need to know everything about them. Mastodon lets you broadcast messages to the public and to your friends, but there is no incentive to convince you to reveal more than necessary. The format of Mastodon is a lot closer to Twitter and Instagram than Facebook specifically, but I think that's a detail of decoration. Facebook replaced MySpace, and they were different formats as well. It doesn't have to be the same thing to be an alternative.
What is unique about federated social networks? Where can they improve upon Facebook and the traditional social networking models?
Federation is key. In my opinion it's one of the most ideal forms of decentralization, and it can be found in many real-world institutions. There is no single point of failure and top-down authority like in a centralized system, communities can spring up by themselves, just like in the old days of the Internet... except now they are interoperable, so content can travel freely between them. And unlike peer-to-peer solutions of decentralization, some issues are avoided, such as having to encounter and moderate all bad content on your own (instead, servers have mods, and your server neighbours can help with reports), or having to be online to receive messages (the server is the one being online), or synchronization between devices.
What can we do about audio, video, and multimedia, to make publishing and sharing of these formats federated and decentralized?
Mastodon allows images and videos up to a certain size limit. The servers cache this content so end-users are not hotlinked to another server, this saves the origin server's bandwidth and protects end-users from leaking their IP address to a different server. Of course, this approach brings challenges when file sizes grow. PeerTube, a federated video sharing platform, takes a different approach by using WebTorrent (BitTorrent over the browser). This does reveal the end-users' IP addresses to other end-users who are watching the video, but bandwidth costs for the origin server are lowered and other servers don't have to download and cache large files. A very similar approach to that is using IPFS. With IPFS, servers can cache large files (essentially also using a form of the BitTorrent protocol), and end-users can either peer with the IPFS network directly or use a gateway server to view the content.
How has the Facebook "scandal" affected federated social networks so far?
With growth and press attention, so quite positively. Privacy-minded people have been ringing the alarm bells about Facebook for years, but right now is when this idea is entering the mainstream.
Can Mastodon avoid the same pitfalls/errors as Facebook?
I think so, and I wouldn't be here otherwise. We have to be careful and thoughtful about our design decisions, but many of the fundamental differences between the platforms are reassuring.
How does Mastodon stand out, improve upon, or interop with the various social media projects of the past (StatusNet/GNU Social, Diaspora, Friendica, etc.)?
Mastodon begun as an OStatus implementation (this is the protocol that StatusNet/GNU Social implement), but it was quite dated and lacking in features, and OStatus never left the draft stage to become an official standard. So halfway through 2017 we performed an upgrade to the newer ActivityPub, which would, after our implementation, become a W3C-recommended standard. PeerTube, Hubzilla, Friendica and MissKey are some of the other softwares that implement ActivityPub. Support for ActivityPub in GNU Social has been planned, as far as I am aware. Furthermore, people are working on other implementations, such as Kroeg, Rustodon and Funkwhale.
Mastodon differents from GNU Social in having more privacy-oriented features, more moderation tools, a simpler/elegant API for client apps, a real-time streaming API, better content discovery mechanisms, and a more attractive user experience. Friendica and Hubzilla have a quite different user experience to Mastodon. Diaspora is the one big-name project that is completely incompatible with Mastodon because they use their own protocol rather than ActivityPub.
Where do we go from here (standards, interoperability, etc.)?
ActivityPub is already a W3C-recommended standard! And I am proud to see more and more implementations spring up. It's a really generic protocol that can support many different use cases of social networks. Microblogging, photo sharing, event planning, video hosting, it's all possible and beautifully interoperable. Ironically, perhaps ActivityPub is the thing that will truly "connect the world", rather than Facebook who that catchphrase belongs to.

More Minecraft grumping
Cut to spare the dash.
Things I really don’t like about Minecraft, honestly:
The early survival game is inaccessible
Here’s the thing about early Minecraft survival: you’re plonked in the middle of the wilderness, with absolutely nothing, and literally the first thing you got to do is punch a tree and find a safe place to spend the night before you get beaten up by monsters.
That’s it. You could spend the night hiding in a hole, probably crafting and mining something in the middle of the night, while hostile mobs wander areas that aren’t lit up, waiting to, basically, kill you. And you’ll stay in this precarious situation for at least a few days, as you 1) make a place to sleep, 2) build shelter, 3) get supplies to venture out, and 4) don’t die, because if you die, you lose your stuff.
This is a game marketed to mass audiences. For children, even. And it can be so manifestly unpleasant I have no idea how it got popular so quickly.
I don’t actually have a problem with this, actually! I positively enjoyed some of that experience, and some of that tension makes for some fun gameplay and entertaining stories — like the one where I found a white horse, tamed it, named it, and then proceeded to take it to a foolhardy exploratory quest before it fell under a hail of arrows (RIP Binky 2019–2019).
And I don’t even have a problem with the learning curve, because I’ve learned and thrived in environments like Dwarf Fortress. I use emacs for gods’ sake. Low accessibility and high difficulty environments are my jam.
But getting here involved more than a dozen start-and-stop moments of gameplay where I literally quit the game, deleted the save, and went to bed in disgust. It’s stupid. It’s aggravating. I can’t believe that this was ready for mass market, what with the lack of telegraphing and the pretty damn high stakes from the start, that the only people who’d play this would be gamers who are familliar with the tropes, already know a little about Minecraft lore, and are invested to try and try again.
To be fair, they’ve made some things easier: they’ve included guidebooks with recipes to automatically load items you already know into the crafter, there’s an official guide online, and if need be, you have cheats. But consider:
If you need to cheat to get the game accessible, there is something wrong with the core game loop.
You can’t create a guidebook and then rely on players gaining “enough experience” to access them to make the game more accessible.
You can’t just bloody have a guide that a person needs to open a browser, or buy the book, to get by.
Survival is very much a non-starter if Minecraft is your first serious game, you get frightened or suffer from anxiety in trying to stay alive, and you have difficulty optimizing your moves to get the best result.
Redstone is a mess
Actually, I have no opinions on how redstone is implemented on a purely technical basis. It’s a system, it’s mostly Turing complete, that's… interesting. What pisses me off is how the Technical Minecraft community is… well, frankly, hard to get into, hard to gain proficiency in, and looks fairly clannish, insular and… honestly a drag to Minecraft’s further development, if Minecraft was to get developed further.
Like I’ve talked about this before, but the existence of the Technical Minecraft is entirely dependent on a class of software behavior that you could make an argument are actually bugs. Zero-tick pistons, anomalous sticky piston behavior with blocks, quasi-connectivity… these weren’t intended consequences for the developers of Minecraft, and they’ve said so before.
Say what you want, but honestly if the only reason why a developer reverted a bug-fix because a bunch of small, clannish, insular, and loud minority were making complaints, I’d honestly ask how much value those people should have in how you run your business.
But that isn’t all. I had taken to writing down notes because I wanted to figure out how certain redstone constructions worked, and even the simplest designs suffer from the following:
There appears to be no standard way of sharing schematics and designs for redstone creations.
Most of the instructions are in video, which is a terrible medium to instruct in, because you don’t have a way to skim through the resource, the presenter literally doesn’t have to say anything more than what they do on video (and thus can be as vague and contradictory as they want).
Most of the instructions are in the nature of, do everything this way, except this section, in which you need to do (flurry of movement as the presenter puts in a slightly different design that you better be able to catch). It’s “simple”. No, it’s fucking not.
Another thing that bothers me is that, fundamentally, most redstone designs are hand-crafted, which is mind-boggling. For one, if you are just starting redstone in Minecraft, you’re going to be sitting with the same toolkit that the most experienced users of redstone are. You’ll still be laying down redstone lines and putting in comparators. You’ll still be dealing with the janky and inconsistent behavior that experienced redstoners are. You’d still be debugging your creations with the same tools experienced redstoners are. And like, you’d be doing it with nary any institutional or technical support, because… reasons?
It’s like you progress from electrical engineering to low-level programming to high-level programming to virtual machines to virtualization… so that you can get back to electrical engineering again? Using skills that may or may not transfer well into other fields? Why?
And there are consequences for this as well, which I’ll get to in a bit, but also, I need to talk about how the community gets around this problem, which is basically…
Modded Minecraft replaces the problems vanilla has with other problems
Specifically? One of them is performance.
I don’t know if you’ve tried 1.12.x and then compared it with 1.15.x, but the differences are night and day. Like, I run a potato computer, mostly because we’re broke af and don’t have the scratch for a l33t gaming machine, but… well, yeah. What’s occasionally janky in 1.15 is literally unplayable in 1.12. What takes 5 minutes to load in vanilla takes up to thirty minutes in modded Minecraft.
And sure, this will sort itself out as modders eventually take advantage of the new architecture and optimizations within 1.15, but in some other ways, it won’t. Mostly because the nature of modded Minecraft is that it literally has to interface with the literal source files to generate or insert new code, and since mod-makers don’t have access to the code pipeline and the tools that they can use to optimize the game, well…
And we’ve only talked about the Java Edition, and not Bedrock, which I suspect will be even more tightly incorporated into the platforms that it runs, at the cost of having less open infrastructure, and as a result, more consequences to mod performance and stabilty.
But another thing that bothers me about modded Minecraft is how so many mods are just… Minecraft, but more. More power, more game mechanics, more technical additions, more mobs, more enchantments… but half the time the resulting game feels bloated and overly-complex.
This is funny because it literally sounds like I’m contradicting myself over the fact that early Minecraft survival had too little in terms of letting itself be accessible, so you’d think I’d welcome mods that worked out some of these gaps with things that made player lives easier.
But what I’m looking for is a realignment of how the game approaches players, not as a punitive, inaccessible system where difficulty is a mask for what is ultimately shallow gameplay, and what we get from modded Minecraft is more stuff. Sometimes, in some modpacks, just so many things that several mods do the same thing that the other mods do.
It’s kind of telling that every time I see a modpack that includes Draconic Evolution the first thing I think of is I better not get into Draconic early, because if I do the rest of the game will literally break, because I have no idea what the hell the mod creators are doing there, but when your damage scales allow you to three-shot the Ender Dragon final boss, that mod breaks the game. Doesn’t matter if you make a boss that’s three times tougher than, say, the Wither. Game’s fucking broken.
There are some good approaches: FTB Academy and other questbook mods do give players a chance to orient and align themselves with what to do, without forcing players to have to go through the anxiety and terror of not knowing what to do, and keeps them engaged far longer than they should be, but honestly… ultimately what you’re doing is more stuff, just through the lens of what the mod wants you to do.
Plus FTB Academy has Draconic and you can literally two-shot the Guardian of Gaia, which is supposed to be so tough that metal music starts playing and it can cause effects that are twice as worse as the Wither… well.
Is it just me or are there only dudes in this party?
If I have to count the number of people who weren’t cis men or boys in the time I’ve been lurking around Minecraft’s YouTube channels, I can quite literally say that the number would be less than half a dozen.
That’s very bad. When your visible community is 95% cis dudes and everyone else aren’t there, it tells me that:
The game alienates literally everyone who isn’t a cis dude
The player base are driving away anyone who isn’t a cis dude
Part of the reasons for #1 are, well, I’ve mentioned them above: it only really allows people who have the time and wherewithal to plug into an activity that offers no real benefit outside of the game itself, most of the fantasies it caters to is power fantasies of vanquishing more and more powerful opponents, and there’s barely any community support for newcomers.
So that’s no surprise that the kind of people who are popular Minecraft YouTubers are dudes who are either bad at explaining what they do, are inarticulate, or… well, to not put it too unkindly, dicks. I mean, Minecraft’s recent rise in popularity and relevance was, sadly, because PewDiePie was playing it. So that tells you everything.
And we haven’t even gotten into the fact that the playerbase looks pale as fuck, so you know that’s a thing. I’m seeing a few Indonesian-language Minecraft tutorials on YouTube, so that’s neat, but otherwise… it’s pretty white-dominated.
And this all assumes that the causes are all because of structural inequalities, not active fuckery against marginalized folks. I honestly don’t know how often that happens, though I wouldn’t honestly be surprised if it did. I mean, it’s not as if the game isn’t associated with nasty folk like PDP… and hell, even the original creator, who, to their credit, Microsoft and Mojang have sidelined, is a homophobic and racist dude.
But, yeah. I mean, $CHILD_1 and $CHILD_2 are still at it with Minecraft, and I’ll be around to help them through, hopefully to steer them away from the nasty stuff. But still, ugh. There are so many reasons to be grumpy about this game.
Mind you, at least it isn’t Roblox.

Should You Buy a Used Ford F-150?
Decades and generations of pickup-building expertise culminated in the latest complete generation of the Ford F-150, which launched for model-year 2009 and carried on through 2014. This 12-generation (!) F-150 has moved fully into used-vehicle territory, and a couple-years-old copy may make a compelling used truck for a buyer after big capability on a budget. Or maybe for those loyal Ford truck owners that are apprehensive about the latest model’s switch to an all-aluminum body. The all-steel 12th-generation F-150 underwent numerous changes and updates, in addition to introducing the EcoBoost engine range in the pickup scene, while offering up the latest in connected truck technology, luxury feature content, and safety. The selection was abundant with numerous engines, drivelines, body styles, trim grades, and special-edition packages on offer. This generation F-150 also saw the introduction of the specialized SVT Raptor, which isn’t covered in this used Ford F-150 buyer’s guide. If you’re considering a mainstream version of this generation of F-150, you’ll find V6 or V8 power, two or four-wheel drive, and equipment levels that set the machine up from work truck to posh towing rig, or anything in between. Depending on the year and model selected, feature content may include navigation, Ford SYNC, climate controlled seats, Bluetooth, automatic climate control, premium stereo systems, power-deployed side-steps, and plenty more. Buckle up for the powertrain options: at launch, these included a 5.4-liter V8 with 320 horsepower, or a 4.6-liter V8 with 248 or 292 horsepower, depending on the year. A 2011 overhaul saw the engine range revised with a focus on fuel economy via a newly available 3.7-liter V6 with 302 horsepower, a 5.0-liter V8 with 360, and a 6.2-liter V8 with 411. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 launched here as well, with 365 horsepower and nearly as much torque as F150’s biggest V8. If you’re after a fully loaded unit with all the flauntables, search out a Lariat, King Range, Platinum or Limited model. After something more modest? Check out an XLT or FX4. Like the Dodge Ram, Toyota Tundra, Nissan Titan, and Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra with which it competes, the F-150 battled for the dollars of new and seasoned pickup shoppers with stand-out styling, feature content, capability, and power. Owners tend to comment positively on the F-150’s ride quality, flexibility, and performance from any of the larger engines. Test Drive To-Do List for a Used Ford F-150 #1: Give Ford SYNC a Workout Pair your phone via Bluetooth, plug in a USB drive full of media, and give the Ford SYNC system a workout. Make and take a phone call, plot a navigation destination, try numerous voice commands (press the Voice button and say “HELP” for more information) and otherwise work the system through various functions and operations. Be on the lookout for any stalling, crashing, lagging or poor system performance, as numerous owners of Ford SYNC-equipped vehicles have reported issues from time to time. In many cases, a software update via the dealer or a hard system reset is the solution. If that’s not the case, the system head unit may need to be replaced, which is expensive. Seeking out a model with a healthy SYNC system that’s had all software updates applied reduces the likelihood of frustration and annoyance. #2: Check the Headliner for Sogginess Turn your attention to the F-150’s ceiling liner and be on the lookout for signs of dampness and moisture, either present or previous. Dampness, a mildewy smell, or visual clues of moisture staining on the rear corners of the headliner (or outer edges of the rear seats) could indicate that water is finding its way past a seal in the rear window, or the high-mounted rear brake light. This issue isn’t reported abundantly relative to total sales volume, but is worth being aware of. #3: Beware the Mud Tires and Lift Kit The average shopper is best to avoid an F-150 that’s been modified with non-factory parts for maximum peace of mind. Lift kits, oversized wheels and tires, and other suspension modifications can cause problems, especially if the quality of the parts or their installation is poor. (Unless you’re getting one of those SVT Raptors!) Note that in many applications, lifted pickups will consume more fuel, handle poorly, while the axle, differential, and bushings could wear out faster #4: Check the 4×4 System If equipped, be sure to confirm that the F-150’s 4×4 system works as outlined in the owner’s manual during the course of your test drive. Toggle between all available 4×4 modes, confirming that each engages quickly, and without any warning lights or messages in the instrument cluster. Repairs to the 4×4 system can be expensive, so now’s the time to find out if there’s a problem or issue that the seller would rather you foot the bill for. #5: Feel the Steering Cruise at various speeds down a rougher road or highway, and zero in on the F-150’s front end. A popping sound or sensation possibly felt through the floor near your feet or a vibration could be evidence of an issue with the vehicle’s tie rods. This should be addressed by a technician before your purchase, as it can affect safety, handling, tire wear, and vehicle alignment. #6: Get it on a Hoist A rule of thumb before purchasing any used pickup is to have a technician inspect the vehicle fully on a hoist. Here, a quick visual inspection can reveal signs of suspension damage, leaks, excessive rust, indications that the vehicle has been poorly repaired after an accident, signs that the vehicle has been abused in an off-road setting and much more. #7: Choose an Engine There’s some question as to which engine choice is best for F-150 shoppers from this generation. If you’re after something more powerful than the standard V6, then you’re probably debating between the 5.0-liter V8 and the more complex and powerful EcoBoost V6. Though the EcoBoost engine promises better fuel efficiency and a major improvement in torque output, many owners have reported problems ranging from condensation build up in the intercooler, to misfiring, to valve-gunk buildup, and more. Some owners have even reported turbocharger failure, which could eat up all fuel savings if it occurs out of warranty. Keep context in mind, noting that most EcoBoost owners have had few if any issues. Still, our recommendation is the 5.0-liter V8, which seems like F-150’s all-around best engine for the long term. If you’re set on the EcoBoost powerplant, be sure to have a full diagnostic scan performed, be sure that all servicing is up to date, and budget for any extended warranty available, if possible. Your Best Bet?: A healthy used Ford F-150 from this generation that matches your needs, preferred options and body style, and powerplant, can be bought with relative confidence after a full Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI) by a Ford technician. Purchasing a used F-150 without full service records and an inspection is not advised especially if it’s running the EcoBoost engine. Good To Know Safety: NHTSA 4/5 Stars IIHS: Top Safety Pick Here’s a starting point to check out F-150 recalls The post Should You Buy a Used Ford F-150? appeared first on AutoGuide.com News.

My IPhone Contact Display screen Is not Working! Here’s The Fix
It’s natural to feel annoyed when your iPhone contact display screen is not working. You use your iPhone for the whole lot, from making calls to scrolling by means of footage — however don’t let your "touch display troubles" get you down. In this text, I’ll explains why the contact screen in your iPhone is just not working, how to fix the issues that may be mounted at residence, and suggest some great restore choices, if it comes to that.
There are a variety of the explanation why your iPhone contact display screen might stop working. Thankfully, there are additionally quite a bit of the way to repair those issues.
Why Is My iPhone Contact Screen Not Responding?
The first thing we need to do is determine why your iPhone touch display screen. Normally, the issue is precipitated when the bodily a part of your iPhone’s show that processes touch (called the digitizer) stops working appropriately or when your iPhone’s software program stops "talking" to the hardware the best way it should. In other phrases, it could possibly be a hardware or a software program drawback, and I’ll provide help to with each in this text.
Troubleshooting iPhone software program issues usually doesn’t value anything. It’s additionally simpler than prying off your display with suction cups (please don’t do that). For this reason, we’ll start with the software fixes and transfer on to fixing the bodily issues if you need to.
A be aware about drops and spills: If you’ve not too long ago dropped your iPhone, odds are a hardware downside is to blame to your contact display hassle — but not always. Sluggish apps and issues that come and go are usually brought on by software problems.
If your contact display screen works sometimes, keep reading. If it doesn’t work in any respect, skip to the part below referred to as When Your iPhone Doesn’t Reply to Contact At all.
Software program Issues and Your iPhone Touch Display screen
A problem with the software that tells your cellphone the way to act can cause your iPhone touchscreen to cease working. It may assist to reset troublesome software in case your iPhone contact screen is just not working.
Does your contact screen cease responding when you employ a certain app? That app may be to blame. Strive uninstalling and reinstalling it. To uninstall an app:
Find the app on your iPhone’s residence display screen. The home display is what you see below:
Press and hold your finger over the app icon till all of the icons start to shake and there may be an "X" within the higher-left corner of the icon.
Faucet the "X" after which Delete to remove the app out of your iPhone.
In case your iPhone contact screen shouldn't be working after you’ve reinstalled the app, ship a message to the app developer. They might have a repair for the problem or be working on an answer already.
How Do I Send a Message to the App Developer?
Faucet to open the App Store.
Faucet Search at the underside of the screen and seek for the app.
Tap the app icon to open particulars in regards to the app.
Scroll to the underside and tap Developer Web site. The developer’s web site will load.
Look for a contact kind or electronic mail deal with on the developer’s website. It shouldn’t be onerous to search out it the developer is value their salt. Remember that good developers appreciate it if you let them know about issues with their apps!
When Your iPhone Doesn’t Respond to Contact At all
Touch screen problems that occur in a number of applications or if you don’t have an app open may be caused by issues with the iPhone’s software. A great first troubleshooting step is to power your iPhone off and back on again, but it’s laborious to do this when your touch display screen doesn’t work! Instead, we’ll have to do a tough reset. Here’s how:
In case your iPhone won’t flip off in the conventional way — or if turning your iPhone off and back on again doesn’t solve the issue — strive doing a hard reset. To do that, hold the ability and Home Buttons down at the same time. Wait a number of seconds, till the Apple logo appears on the display, and then let go.
On an iphone 6 screen Kit; https://resunphone.com/, 7, 7 Plus, 8, or eight Plus, a hard reset is carried out by urgent and holding the facility button and quantity down button together for a number of seconds until the you see the Apple logo seem on the display.
A hard reset abruptly stops the entire background processes on your iPhone and may cause software program issues. It often doesn’t, however it’s a good suggestion to solely do a hard reset when you'll want to.
My Touchscreen Nonetheless Isn’t Working!
Is your iPhone contact display screen still giving you problems? Then it is perhaps time to try restoring your iPhone to its unique settings. Earlier than you do this, you'll want to backup your data. You'll be able to do this by plugging your iPhone into a pc and running iTunes or utilizing iCloud.
I like to recommend performing a DFU (Default Firmware Replace) restore. Such a restore is a little more thorough than a traditional iPhone restore. To do this, you’ll want your iPhone, a cable to plug it into the computer, and the latest version of iTunes.
Placing your iPhone into DFU mode might be a bit tricky. For a easy step-by-step walkthrough, check out our article that explains exactly how to place your iPhone into DFU mode. When you’re achieved, come again right here.
When Your Contact Display screen Hardware Is To Blame
If you’ve dropped your iPhone just lately, you could have broken the display screen. A cracked show is one of the most obvious indicators of a broken screen and can cause all types of points with the touch display screen.
A drop can also loosen or harm the delicate underneath-layers of your iPhone touchscreen. What you see and put your fingers on is just one a part of the touch display screen. Beneath, there’s an LCD display screen that creates the photographs you see. There’s additionally one thing referred to as a digitizer. The digitizer is the part of the iPhone that senses your contact.
The LCD display screen and digitizer both connect with your iPhone’s logic board - that’s the computer that makes your iPhone work. Dropping your iPhone can loosen the cords that join the LCD display screen and digitizer to the logic board. That free connection can make your iPhone touch display cease working.
The MacGyver Answer
When iPhones get dropped, the tiny cables that hook up with your iPhone’s logic board can turn into dislodged just enough for the touchscreen to cease working, even when there’s no physical damage. It’s a longshot, however you may be in a position to fix your iPhone’s contact display by urgent down on the part of the show the place the cables connect to the logic board.
Warning: Be careful! In the event you press down too arduous, you could possibly crack the show — however this could also be a type of "nothing left to lose" situations, and it has worked for me before.
Choices for Fixing a Damaged Touchscreen
If your iPhone contact just isn't working because it’s utterly damaged, you would order a kit and attempt to swap out the components your self, but I wouldn’t advocate it. If something goes unsuitable and you’ve replaced any a part of your iPhone with a non-Apple part, the Genius Bar won’t even have a look at your iPhone — you’ll be on the hook for a brand new iPhone at full retail price.
youtube
The Genius Bar does an incredible job with damaged shows, however they charge a premium for their service. If you’d prefer to save some cash, I recommend high-high quality third-get together repair companies like Puls if you’d like to save some money. Puls will come to you and fix your iPhone in as little as 30 minutes with a lifetime warranty, all for much less cash than Apple.
As soon as the damaged pieces are replaced, your iPhone touch display should work like new. If it doesn’t, the software program is probably to blame.
Again In touch With your iPhone
Your iPhone contact display screen is a posh and fascinating piece of know-how. I hope this text has helped you if you iPhone contact screen isn't working, and I’d love to know which solution worked for you in the comments part beneath. Thanks for studying!

Importance of Technology and Science in Nursing, Learn it briefly at the International Conference 13NHPSUCG
The goal of nursing has always been to care for and comfort the injured and ill. As our civilization advanced, technological development started to have an ever-growing impact on nursing practise. In addition to or instead of caring for patients, nurses found themselves caring for machinery. The proliferation of technology over the past 25 years has had an impact on every aspect of nursing. However, the nurse has not been adequately trained to work closely with sophisticated equipment by nursing education or agency orientation training. Traditional sex-role stereotyping aggravates the issue. It is vital to make changes to academic training, employer practises, and nursing standards. The majority of nurses use medical technology. They ought to be capable of handling that technology.
New technology is transforming our daily lives, affecting everything from buying pizza to financial security. New technology is increasingly discovering methods to have an impact on the healthcare sector.
More than 600 professional nurses responded to a recent study, and 82% of them agreed that improvements in technology and medical equipment will improve patient care.
Using technology, registered nurses (RNs) may work more efficiently and communicate more clearly. Join us and learn about Technology and Nursing Science? The CME/CPD accredited 13th World Nursing, Healthcare Management, and Patient Safety Conference which is going to be held on November 15-18, 2023in Los Angeles, USA is a great opportunity for you to learn. What Benefits Do Nursing Technologies Bring to Patients?
These new medical innovations are essential for sustaining patient care and the overall healthcare system as the population ages, life expectancy rises, and the nursing crisis persists. Both medical personnel and patients may find new medical technologies to be more convenient. For doctors and nurses who are responsible for a big patient load, certain technologies can make patient care simpler and more effective. They can also help patients get the care they require by providing more practical and easily accessible solutions.
Many of these modern medical technologies are beneficial to the nursing profession in terms of everyday tasks as well as reducing human error and mistakes that can occur when there are not enough nurses and they are working long hours with too many patients.
Although nurses concur that cutting-edge medical gadgets and new healthcare technology can be helpful, they also concur that regular human contacts shouldn't be replaced by technology. Nursing involves a significant amount of direct patient contact, and this engagement is essential to helping patients relax.
The majority of experts also concur that using medical software and technology excessively should be avoided and that using human eyes to assess symptoms and needs is just as vital as using medical technology. Even if new technology isn't a panacea for healthcare problems, it is positively altering the way nurses perform their duties.
Seven notable innovations are revolutionizing medical treatment. Patients and healthcare professionals gain from nurses' education on cutting-edge medical techniques and procedures.
1. Automated IV Pumps
The dosages and drips administered to patients are managed by automated IV pumps. Nurses can alter the drip rates and drug dosages thanks to software and medical technology without having to wait for the patients. Nutritional IV pumps deliver required meals at the appropriate times. Self-pumps are another option that let patients raise their own controlled dosage of painkillers.
Instead of having to measure and administer medication or meals, automated IV kits allow nurses to concentrate on other aspects of their jobs. Since hospitals use a variety of automated IV pumps, nurses' training and education are frequently focused on the particular hospital or clinic they work at.
In addition, a lot of nursing schools offer instruction and knowledge on modern software and technology, including how and why automated IV pumps are beneficial.
2. Transportable displays
Nursing staff can check on patients whether they're on the go or taking care of someone else thanks to portable monitoring technology. Portable devices feed data back to a central monitor while monitoring vital indicators such the ECG, respiration rates, and oxygen saturations. This means that if there is an emergency, nurses will receive an alarm warning.
In most hospitals, nurses check the levels every hour. Even when there are many other things happening, portable monitoring technology enables nurses to track and record statistics at the appropriate time. They can now continuously monitor patients from anywhere in the hospital because to this. The portable monitor can send alerts and alarms to nurses, potentially saving lives.
Nursing schools assist in instructing students on the importance and broad application of many common pieces of equipment, and nurses receive training on the use of portable monitors in their particular hospital.
3. Smart Beds
Nurses may monitor vital signs, weight, and movement with the aid of smart bed equipment. During a protracted hospital stay, smart beds are essential for keeping patients secure and comfortable. Smart beds are crucial for patient safety given the high rate of patient falls and injuries in hospitals.
With the use of smart bed technology, nurses have a permanent in-room monitor that continuously updates them on a patient's actions. Additionally, it can aid in the discovery of patterns, which may result in a revised assessment of a problem or a new diagnosis.
Because they can assist control that with their smart bed, nurses also spend less time coming in to modify supplies and medical equipment for comfort or safety. It enables service providers to return to other crucial human-only tasks.
4. Wearable Technology
Mobile apps and wearable technology are revolutionising the healthcare sector. People are able to take control of their health with the use of devices that track heart rates, activity, sleep, respiration, and more.
With more people having access to iPhones, nurses also gain from tools and apps that improve patient care. For instance, the Steth IO smartphone stethoscope, which is essentially a stethoscope app, enables nurses and doctors to obtain breathing sounds and view heart rates using just their smartphones. Especially for younger patients, using a phone can be less scary and provide physicians with access to a wide range of information and simple tracking of medical needs.
Because data is transmitted directly from the wearable gadget, they assist nurses reduce the potential for human mistake. It enables quicker record keeping and aids patients and staff in maintaining regular health monitoring.
5. Digital Health Records
Older paper filing techniques are being replaced by electronic health records (EHR). Nursing professionals can record patient care in electronic health records and access data that can assist them prioritise treatment. Additionally, the care team, including doctors and even patients themselves when appropriate, can access data input into computer systems.
Even while HIPAA laws require that healthcare institutions maintain the security and privacy of electronic records, security issues for EHRs are being alleviated by new technologies like block chain and cryptography.
The efficiency and precision of medical care are impacted by real-time health updates. Although RNs pick up computer skills on the job, their education and training will enable them to promptly comprehend the meaning of various symptoms on medical records and the best course of action to guarantee better patient outcomes.
6. Consolidated Command Posts
Centralized command centres, one of the newest concepts for hospitals, promise better patient experiences as well as better ways for RNs and doctors to manage supplies, clinical technology, and capacity. This is accomplished with real-time updating software programmes like dashboards.
Nurses and doctors can actively monitor room availability, OR schedules, and what specific patients still need before being released with shorter or absent delays between transfers of care. Everyone is able to work more effectively and assist patients better as a result.
Command centres, which were created specifically for capacity management, are working well across the nation. Many hospitals claim to be running at higher capacity and providing better patient care overall.
7. Apps and telehealth
A crucial, more recent component of healthcare is telehealth. Patients can virtually video chat with a doctor or nurse in hospitals and clinics to describe their symptoms or to show them items like lumps or rashes. Patients benefit from speedy diagnoses without having to leave the comfort of their own home thanks to this. They can acquire a prescription for medication, receive medical advice, or learn if they need to visit for more testing or diagnosis.
Patients and doctors can both save money and time by using telehealth. Similar to that, it stops sick people from visiting public areas and potentially infecting other patients. The way clinics run and how patients are treated are changing as a result of this technology.
In a similar way, wearable’s and medical apps support patients and physicians as they try to enhance health. Patients' vital signs can be checked by doctors and nurses even when they are not in the office. They may be used for general health and wellness or for more specific medical conditions like diabetes or seizure disorders. Additionally, apps can educate individuals about when to seek medical attention and when a straightforward over-the-counter drug may be helpful. Again, this helps clinics conserve resources while also saving time and reducing frustration for patients.
Using apps can help with mental health difficulties. Apps for mindfulness educate users on their mental and physical well-being and serve as a gentle reminder to give these vital aspects of wellness the attention they deserve.
Doctors, nurses, and patients themselves now have more control over their health thanks to advancements in app and telehealth technology.
Nursing Education
Innovations in clinical healthcare technology are exciting and revolutionary, and they have an impact on the sector every day. The process of learning about and integrating this new technology into their professional lives—not to mention how this may affect their ability to improve their careers—can be difficult for nurses.
With the development of new technology in the healthcare sector, it is essential for nurses to stay on top of these changes and enhance their skills to meet what the industry and patients need for great care. The key to navigate these unfamiliar waters is education.
Working with an online university like WGU can help you get the training you need with flexible coursework that can fit in with your busy schedule, whether you're an RN already looking to advance your career or you're transitioning into a nursing position and need the educational support to make your career leap. You can learn to prepare yourself for future breakthroughs and innovations that might have an influence on your work as a nurse by continuing your education in addition to helping you become more comfortable managing the technical needs of the developing healthcare business.
Nurses can adapt along with the healthcare business as it develops with the aid of new technologies, improving patient care in the process.

Oh, and Tumblr? One more thing.
I love the fact that you’re getting rid of adult content, but still embracing abuse, kink-shaming, white supremacy, harassment, death threats, animal abuse, neo-Nazis, conspiracy theories, and all kinds of hatred.
Lions and tigers and bears, oh my.
And before you cry outrage, please allow me to explain:
You see, you say that you can ban all of the “female-presenting” nipples, eliminate sex workers’ safety, remove artists whose work focused more on kink than kittens, and consensual sexual enjoyment between one or more people simply by flipping a switch.
Simple, yes?
And yet, regardless of your claims of making Tumblr a more welcoming environment, I can think of at least fifty blogs focused on white supremacy, neo Nazi glorification, non-consensual degradation of the opposite sex, gleeful cackling about non-Christian hatred, and glorification of murder and violence that I’ve stumbled across in the last week alone.
And what was I doing with my kinky self that led me to finding those blogs?
I was looking for recipes
I was following some fantastic photographers
I was watching costuming videos
I was enraptured with makeup tutorials
I was reading memes
I was keeping abreast of up with the news
I was reading serialized stories
I was looking for Christmas gifts
I was weeping with a friend over the loss of her cat
I was delirious with joy when my favorite author released a new book
I was chatting with friends
I was reading about a new restaurant
I was rolling my eyes at various animal antics
I was learning more about foreign countries
I was snorting with laughter at some truly execrable puns
I was watching movie trailers
I was trying to figure out whether or not I could replace the base model dash unit in my car on own, or if I should leave that job to a professional (side note: I’m leaving it to a professional)
And yes, I have to admit that I was taking a bit of time to appreciate and enjoy some of the kink and carnality that makes Tumblr the platform it is.
Or, as of tomorrow, what once made Tumblr the platform it was.
After all,
Tumblr celebrates creativity. We want you to express yourself freely and use Tumblr to reflect who you are, and what you love, think, and stand for.
https://staff.tumblr.com/post/180758987165/a-better-more-positive-tumblr
And that was what I was doing.
But even ignoring my own situation, here’s the biggest problem I have with your claims, and how they don’t hold up to your actions.
Are there blogs that have both content that well may deserve being banned at the same time as having content that shouldn’t? Absolutely. And, that said, if your software and personnel were as on-point as you claim they are, you should be able to recognize them.
Are there blogs that have content that you’re now deeming should be banned, even though it’s completely legal, completely consensual, and completely focused on expressing ourselves freely, and using Tumblr to reflect who we are, and what we love, think, and stand for? Indubitably. And, that said, if your software and personnel were as on-point as you claim they are, you should be able to recognize them.
It is our continued, humble aspiration that Tumblr be a safe place for creative expression, self-discovery, and a deep sense of community. As Tumblr continues to grow and evolve, and our understanding of our impact on our world becomes clearer, we have a responsibility to consider that impact across different age groups, demographics, cultures, and mindsets. We spent considerable time weighing the pros and cons of expression in the community that includes adult content. In doing so, it became clear that without this content we have the opportunity to create a place where more people feel comfortable expressing themselves.
Bottom line: There are no shortage of sites on the internet that feature adult content. We will leave it to them and focus our efforts on creating the most welcoming environment possible for our community.
https://staff.tumblr.com/post/180758987165/a-better-more-positive-tumblr
Thank you for that, Tumblr. Thank you ever so much.
Thank you for telling us that we don’t belong. That we don’t need a place to call home. That we should go back into the closet, or onto the streets, or head to a place where there’s nothing but porn, because you think someone who draws hentai as well as kittens and flowers should be relegated to Xtube or PornHub rather than risk upsetting the delicate sensibilities of your investors shareholders other users.
Thank you for telling us that we have the choice of the wimple or the walk of shame.
What is "adult content?"
Adult content primarily includes photos, videos, or GIFs that show real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples, and any content—including photos, videos, GIFs and illustrations—that depicts sex acts.
What is still permitted?
Examples of exceptions that are still permitted are exposed female-presenting nipples in connection with breastfeeding, birth or after-birth moments, and health-related situations, such as post-mastectomy or gender confirmation surgery. Written content such as erotica, nudity related to political or newsworthy speech, and nudity found in art, such as sculptures and illustrations, are also stuff that can be freely posted on Tumblr.
https://staff.tumblr.com/post/180758987165/a-better-more-positive-tumblr
Thank you for telling female-presenting individuals -- regardless of their gender, and regardless of whether or not they’re choosing to go through with gender confirmation surgery -- that they’re to cover themselves up as long as they look like females.
Thank you for telling at least half of your membership -- or, to be more specific, at least half of the world’s population -- that they should be ashamed of their bodies, and they should cover them up because ... because of ... wait ... other than Puritanical nonsense and the notion that men can’t control their lustful thoughts should they catch sight of a well-turned ankle in a high-buttoned boot, why should they have to cover them up?
As a global platform for creativity and self-expression, Tumblr is deeply committed to supporting and protecting freedom of speech. At the same time, we draw lines around a few narrowly defined but deeply important categories of content and behavior that jeopardize our users, threaten our infrastructure, and damage our community.
https://staff.tumblr.com/post/180758987165/a-better-more-positive-tumblr
Thank you for telling us that we -- the very community for whom you claim concern -- are creating content and practicing behaviors that jeopardize your users, threaten your infrastructure, and damage your community.
Thank you for telling us that we’re not allowed to be comfortable expressing ourselves because -- ironically enough -- you wanted to "have the opportunity to create a place where more people feel comfortable expressing themselves.”
Thank you for letting us know that you’re more comfortable sending an eighteen-year-old to a porn site to try and understand their sexuality than you are telling a forty-year-old that a smile and a thong might be a touch too risqué for their profile photo.
Thank you for telling us that our very existence is harmful.
We recognize Tumblr is also a place to speak freely about topics like art, sex positivity, your relationships, your sexuality, and your personal journey. We want to make sure that we continue to foster this type of diversity of expression in the community, so our new policy strives to strike a balance.
https://staff.tumblr.com/post/180758987165/a-better-more-positive-tumblr
Really? That’s why you’re doing this? To strike a balance?
A balance between censorship and ... what?
What balance, precisely, are you seeking?
You’re getting rid of the people who came here because of the community, and who helped make this one of -- if not the -- premier blogging platforms, attempting to fob off your actions as “we don’t think porn fits in with our current business model,” and then trying to claim that these steps you’re taking to marginalize, evict, and shame us are a means of striking a balance.
Really? Really? That’s the line you’re choosing to take?
Bollocks to that.
You see, if you were trying to strike a balance, you’d be a little more focused on how to make sure what you refused to allow was harmful, and what you chose to allow ... well ... wasn’t.
But thank you. Really, I mean that. Thank you.
Thank you for telling us that our self-flagging isn’t good enough.
Thank you for telling us that our choice to set our blogs to explicit isn’t good enough for you.
Thank you for telling us that you don’t screen your membership to prevent underage individuals from accessing explicit blogs.
Thank you for telling us that our lives are less important than your pocketbooks.
Thank you for telling us that we don’t matter to you.
And thank you for proving that -- for all your claims of being intolerant of behavior that you feel shouldn’t be made available at risk of offending others or making them feel unwelcome -- you’re more interested in keeping hatred alive than you are happiness.
Oh wait ... didn’t you claim that you were intolerant of that? Let me check ...
---
The new Community Guidelines will go into effect on September 10, 2018. After that, if we determine a post or blog is promoting hatred, glorifying violence, or is engaging in the unwanted sexualization of another person, it will be taken down. This includes (for example) posting Islamophobic, anti-Semitic, or anti-LGBTQ+ content to promote or incite violence or hatred; using symbols of hate movements to intimidate or harass others; and the glorification of mass murderers
https://staff.tumblr.com/post/177449083750/new-community-guidelines
---
Well will you look at that? You actually pretended that you cared.
Sure Tumblr. Sure.
Let’s face it: you’ve done a really good job of getting rid of the blogs that make people clutch their pearls as well as their sphincters, but you’re doing a piss-poor job of getting rid of the people who would love to bash the people you’re saying don’t deserve a place to be themselves.
Do you want to get rid of pedophilia and bestiality blogs? I’m behind you 100%
Do you want to get rid of actual sex trafficking? I support that wholeheartedly.
Do you want to get rid of the porn bots? For the love of all that’s holy, please do.
But here’s the thing: you’re not just hoping to get rid of them, you’re getting rid of all of the people who have used you in good faith for over a decade, and who are now being told that you’ve decided they’re not worth supporting because they believe in healthy sexuality, well-deserved self-empowerment, and the right to not only be who they are and who they want to be, but to be safe while doing so.
You’re getting rid of the blogs that help people focus on their sexual health
You’re getting rid of the blogs that help people understand that sex isn’t bad, or evil, or something to be afraid of
You’re getting rid of the blogs that help sex workers network, and reach out for support, and tell funny stories about their lives, and share with each other the best ways to stay safe
You’re getting rid of the blogs help people understand that their bodies aren’t weird just because they’re underweight, or overweight, or thinking about breast reduction/enhancement surgery
Bollocks to that.
You’re not just erasing our blogs, you’re doing your best to erase who we are, and to fit a number of oddly-shaped pegs into your startlingly square holes.
And you claim to be doing it because you care about supporting your base, many of whom have relied on you since your inception to not only support us, but to allow us to support one another.
Let me repeat something I quoted above:
We spent considerable time weighing the pros and cons of expression in the community that includes adult content. In doing so, it became clear that without this content we have the opportunity to create a place where more people feel comfortable expressing themselves.
https://staff.tumblr.com/post/180758987165/a-better-more-positive-tumblr
Mmm.
Without that content you have the opportunity to create a place where more people feel comfortable expressing themselves.
It does make me wonder, though, why that content is so bad, when other content seems to hang about.
You know, sites like Good Night Zionist Parasite. Admittedly, it’s only been around for five years, reported a few dozen times, and had a number of other bloggers post their pleas begging you to do something about it, so it’s probably been grandfathered in.
And I can almost understand why you’ve left the three-year-old blog européenne alone. After all, it does showcase some truly some stunning photographs, and I’m sure you didn’t want to lose those even with the dozens of images of racially-charged and sexuality-based hangings and beheadings scattered through it, and its calls for nationalist pride weren’t too terribly prevalent.
And in your defence, you may not have known that Honour the 14 Words was a white supremacist blog: not many people know that it’s tied to the slogan David Lane wrote, even though it has been the most popular white supremacist slogan in the world for over a decade.
I do wonder, though, how White Warrior 1423 and Sieg Heil slipped through the cracks. Now they are only about two years old, and they only brag about the number of times they’ve been reported and cleared a few times, so I’m sure that wasn’t too upsetting to your team; and, once I realized that those blogs passed your litmus test, I really can’t complain about you allowing The Nazi Master, Snow White Pride, Conservative Kings, Nazifacista, Pasternak, Pride Makes us Strong, Eternal Hitlerian, Blitzkrieg Fritz, You Cant Stop Us [sic], and White Lives Matter to make the cut as well.
I do have a few questions about how My Beautiful Rocket -- which has some of the most stomach-churning images of death, gore, and dismemberment I’ve ever seen, and that includes the two autopsies I’ve observed -- is acceptable to you, but perhaps it’s being kept around as a reminder of how not to look when one’s been beaten to death, or had their skull split open, or had their tongue torn out. Hm. or was that another one of the half-dozen gore and mutilation blogs I had the misfortune of stumbling across? Well, no matter: I’m sure you have your reasons.
And really, with those being acceptable, I probably shouldn’t complain about the multitude of blogs focused on self-harm, or the ones showing men tying up and torturing other men by breaking their arms and fingers, or by leaving their significant others with bruises, visible contusions, and -- in one case -- broken stumps of teeth tearing through their gums. In those cases, I’m sure they would have liked to be able to reach out to the owners of the blogs where the users talk about the quantity of crystal meth they’ve purchased, and how they show the difference between smoking for relaxation and pain relief vs injecting it for a euphoric rush and burst of energy.
Then again, I have to admit that those sites fit hand in glove with the ones filled with video after video of explosive regurgitation, those focused on squeezing pimples and evacuating clogged sinuses, and the ones where people are crying out for help and the majority of the comments are begging them to kill themselves, sending links to blogs about how they deserve to die and the best ways to do the deed, and offering to supply the rope or gun.
To be fair, though, the youngest one of those is only a couple of years old, so I’m sure -- regardless of the number of times they made it through the review process and a token time out or two -- that it wasn’t that much of a problem.
After all, none of them had any photographs of female-presenting nipples.
And so that brings me back to my original point: you claim that you’re kicking us out and saying that we are -- in essence -- unworthy of being on your site because our very existence jeopardizes your users, threatens your infrastructure, and damages your community.
Really? You want to make this a better place? You want Tumblr to be a safe place for creative expression, self-discovery, and a deep sense of community? You want to create a place where more people feel comfortable expressing themselves?
Prove it.
If you want us to even begin to believe that you’re doing this because you honestly care about making Tumblr a better place, or that you have even the slightest shred of integrity and self-awareness, then put your monetization where your mouth is and kick off at least another quarter of your user base, because if you’re forcing people off your platform because they dare to show a bit of skin or talk more freely about sex and sexuality than you would like, then you can be damn sure that we’re going to call you out on your blatant and unrepentant hypocrisy at not doing the same thing to the people you claimed to find distasteful well before you decided to kick the kink to the curb.

Chinese enthusiasts are serving global Thinkpad fans by making modern motherboards that fit in classic chassis from the Golden Age of the Thinkpad

After Lenovo bought out IBM's Thinkpad business, they began to tinker with the classic and famously immutable laptop designs: in small ways at first, and then in much larger ones. I buy a new Thinkpad every year (I promised myself a new laptop every year as a dividend from the savings when I stopped smoking) and the first decade's worth were practically perfect: they ran various GNU/Linux flavors without a hitch, the hard-drives were swappable in two minutes by removing a single screw, and the keyboard could be replaced without any tools in less than a minute.
But for about five years, Thinkpads have seen a steady noose-tightening when it comes to user modifiability and GNU/Linux-compatibility, thanks in part to the decision to miniaturize components, and in part to the increasing reliance on UEFI and other BIOS features that make GNU/Linux installation into a much more fraught prospect than it has been since the earliest days of free software.
The first thing to go was the beloved, clacky, positive-action keyboards, replaced by Macbook-style chiclet keyboards that wore out much faster, but at least the keyboards were easily swapped out when they started to falter. Then came new submicro designs that made swapping keyboards into a one-hour procedure that had to be performed by a professional who would have to virtually totally disassemble the computer.
The same forces made drive-swaps harder and harder. I used to order a Thinkpad with the smallest, cheapest drive available and then throw it away on arrival and replace it with a third-party, 1TB SSD. Now I just order the Thinkpads with 1TB SSDs and pay a premium for them (these custom options can add weeks to the build/delivery time, too) -- thankfully, the price-gap on Lenovo's 1TB SSDs and third party drives has narrowed.
GNU/Linux installation has gone from easy to hard to virtually impossible in some cases. In the past twelve months, I've tried to install recent (and LTS) versions of Ubuntu on an X1 Carbon 6th Generation and a T530, only to abandon the project and return the laptops (again, to their credit, Lenovo made these returns easy). I've got an X1 Extreme on order, which is certified for use with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and I've got my fingers crossed.
And now, the Thinkpad X-series systems have eliminated their Ethernet ports and require users to carry (and not lose or break) a dongle to use wired internet.
But there may be another way!
51NB, a group of Chinese enthusiasts buy up classic, pre-Lenovo Thinkpad chassis and manufacturers new motherboards for them with modern CPUs and other hardware. They started with a run of Thinkpad "X62" system (X61s with a new motherboard) and then branched out into Thinkpad "X210"s -- an X201 with a Core i7 8550u (4 cores, turbo boost up to 4GHz); 2× DDR4 SODIMM slots; 2× mini PCI Express slots; an M.2 NVMe slot; a 3.5” SATA bay; a 12.6 inch, 2880×1920, 450 nits, wide gamut display; Mini DisplayPort & VGA out; 3× USB 3.1 ports; an SD reader and gigabit Ethernet (no dongle required!).
Geoff Greer bought both the X62 and the X210 and has rave reviews for both. There are some important drawbacks, though: you can't get Lenovo's best-in-the-world warranty service on your weird Chinese Frankenthinkpad. If it breaks down, you either send it to China or you keep a spare motherboard around and do the swap yourself (you can buy the X210 as a bare board or a complete system). Thankfully, "The laptop can be entirely disassembled with two Philips screwheads (#0 and #1). At no point do you encounter tape, glue, or pentalobe screws."
And buying the X210 isn't easy: you have to wire $1200 to a personal bank account in China and then email another address to have those funds forwarded to a QQ account (!).

It's Time To Invest In A Human Resources Management Software

HR software or Human Capital Management –, serves as a digital replacement for HR tasks and processes and a tool for managing human capital. It incorporates several facets of human resources administration, including hiring, onboarding, planning, and payroll. Time is saved by automating previously done tasks manually and by generating reports based on the information provided. Improved productivity and increased employee satisfaction can be achieved through the use of this technology in the workplace.
Using Spreadsheets Isn't Fulfilling Your Requirements
Are you being held back by the tools you're currently using? Even though spreadsheets may have been helpful at one point or another in your business's history, they eventually become overly complicated, outdated and vulnerable to data breaches, making them less useful in the future. It can take days or even weeks to compile reports because they need to merge multiple spreadsheets. Taking time away from more strategic tasks is a waste.
A cloud HR software automates manual data entry to create a single system of record. As a result, you'll be able to access the most up-to-date information at your fingertips at any time.
An HR System That Can Be Accessed From Any Location Is Needed
Managing a mobile, social and global workforce was a challenge for on-premises technology even before the pandemic. Employees now work from home at least some days of the week, so an HRMS software that can only be accessed in the office will no longer suffice for many companies. It is possible to access a cloud HR system via a web browser, rather than having it installed and maintained on company hard drives.
Aim For Better Experiences And More Freedom For Supervisors
Your employees are your most valuable asset, so it's critical to create a positive work environment that motivates and inspires them. Allowing your employees access and control over their data is a crucial benefit of the cloud-based HRMS software Kolkata.
To free up your HR software team's time to focus on more strategic tasks, they can submit vacation leave or expenses requests. Additionally, managers can sign off on their team members' requests and set up a portal for managing employee evaluations and feedback all in one place with the help of this software.
You've Decided To Travel The World
A staggering 45 per cent of businesses are planning to expand their operations abroad, despite the current pandemic. Despite this, HR and People leaders face a challenge in keeping up with the pace of global expansion.
Each country has laws and regulations governing everything from statutory working hours to sick leave to data compliance to pensions and healthcare. It would help if you had a solution that allows you to manage and maintain global and local rules easily.
Wrapping Up
More than six out of ten (67 per cent) of HR executives said they plan to increase their investment in HR software in the future. However, more than a third admitted that their company's lack of the right HR technology prevents them from embracing the new world of work.
This must be dealt with immediately. There is no other way for HR to cut back on administrative work than to invest in self-service and automation technologies. Cloud and mobile-enabled companies can better manage and engage their remote workforce. People analytics allows HR leaders to make data-based decisions quickly, allowing them to react to changes in the workplace and even predict the future.
To avoid falling further behind in the digital transformation race, organisations need to step up their efforts right away. To get professional service, get in touch with https://www.opportunehr.com/.

Why the PS2’s Sales Record Will Never Be Beaten
https://ift.tt/3BQFQit
As the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S set incredible sales paces in the midst of strange times, and the Nintendo Switch continues to exceed all sales expectations, many fans find themselves wondering whether or not any of those consoles can eventually dethrone the best-selling video game console of all-time: the PlayStation 2.
Well, as you probably guessed based on this article’s headline, my answer to that question is “No.” The PlayStation 2’s position atop the best-selling console chart isn’t an accident and it’s not a record meant to be taken lightly. It’s arguably the one video game sales record that will never be beaten.
Here are just some of the reasons why the PS2’s astonishing 155 million unit sales record likely isn’t in danger of falling anytime soon.
PlayStation 2’s Release Date Gave It One of the Most Notable Head Starts in Console Gaming History
By November 30, 2000, gamers in Japan, North America, Europe, and Australia were able to get their hands on a PS2. The PS2’s only real competition at the time of its global release was the struggling Dreamcast (as well as previous-gen consoles), and the Xbox and GameCube wouldn’t be available worldwide until 2002.
By the time that the Xbox and GameCube were finally released worldwide, all-time great games like Grand Theft Auto 3, Silent Hill 2, Final Fantasy X, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3, Gran Turismo 3, and Devil May Cry were already available on the PS2. What was already seen by industry insiders at the time as an incredible head start is now viewed as the kind of head start that will likely never happen again.
PlayStation 2’s Price Set the Industry Pace
The PlayStation 2’s U.S. launch price of $299 was reasonable enough at the time ($100 more than the Dreamcast and the GameCube and the same launch price as the Xbox), but what pretty much guaranteed the PS2’s victory was Sony’s decision to drop the price of the PS2 to $199 in May 2002.
Microsoft and Nintendo immediately responded to that price cut by dropping the prices of the Xbox and GameCube to $199 and $149, respectively. It was bad enough (for them, at least) that those price cuts came just as those consoles were properly entering the global market, but they sent a clear message to consumers everywhere that the PS2 was setting the pace of the console race.
PlayStation 2’s DVD Player Advantage Will Never Be Replicated
It’s no secret that the PS2’s built-in DVD player was a big part of the reason why the console was so successful in those early months and years. DVD players at that time were expensive, scarce, and, rapidly becoming the must-have accessory for anyone trying to keep up with the Joneses. The PS2 simply offered one of the best ways to get one.
Years later, I’m convinced that there will never be another multimedia accessory a future console could theoretically include at launch that would have as much of an impact as the PS2’s DVD player. The technological world is just different these days, and most people just don’t have to rely on a console to get the multimedia entertainment they’re looking for. Just look at the Nintendo Switch. It’s breaking sales records and doesn’t even officially support the Netflix app.
PlayStation 2’s Backward Compatibility Was an Early “Secret Weapon”
It’s easy enough to overlook now, but anyone who owned a PS2 at launch (or around thereof) knows that the console’s backward compatibility features were almost as big of an early selling point as its DVD player. Indeed, I don’t know if the PS2 would have gotten the full advantage out of its year-long head start that it ultimately did if it weren’t for this feature.
You never really heard anyone talk about the PS2’s mostly dry early game lineup largely because those who owned a PS2 at that time were having more than enough fun watching DVDs and playing upscaled versions of PS1 games they hadn’t yet gotten to. Of course, it wasn’t long before those great next-gen games started rolling in…
PlayStation 2’s Game Library Was One of the Most Diverse Ever
I was originally going to write one entry for the PS2’s library of games and call it a day, but when you’re talking about one of the greatest video game libraries ever assembled, it’s worth spending a little more time on what exactly made it so special.
So far as that goes, the word I keep coming back to when describing the PS2’s lineup is “diversity.” Yes, the PS2’s popularity among Japanese developers gave it a distinct advantage (more on that later), but the PS2’s final library includes all-time great action, open-world, RPG, and horror games from developers across the world.
When a list of the most underrated PS2 games is more impressive than a list of the best games for many other consoles, it’s hard not to argue that the PS2’s success will never be equaled or surpassed

The PS2 Was the Home of Numerous New Franchises
Every year, it felt like there was either an incredible new franchise launching on the PS2 (Devil May Cry, God of War, Kingdom Hearts, etc.) or a franchise that was using the platform’s power/popularity to firmly establish itself as one of the biggest in the industry (Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill). The excitement surrounding new PS2 games wasn’t always focused on sequels but rather what kind of new experiences we were going to get next from often surprising places.
I think most gamers are still open to such new experiences, but the industry has just shifted in a way that makes it incredibly difficult for any console to boast such a consistent onslaught of truly new experiences.
PlayStation 2 Quickly Established Itself As The Ideal Third-Party Console
The PS2’s true exclusives certainly put it over the top, but the thing that impresses me most all these years later is just how much popular the platform was for most of the major third-party, multiplatform titles. Obviously, timed exclusives like the GTA games were pretty much soft PS2 exclusives in the minds of many, but even franchises like Madden sold significantly more units on the PS2 than anywhere else.
This is one element of the PS2’s success Sony has certainly tried to replicate over the years. They understand that once you get that momentum going and convince people that your console is the best place to go for games they could technically get elsewhere, then you’ve most likely got a hit on your hands.
The PlayStation 2 Had Little True Competition
Before you go running to the comments section, let me make it clear that I actually love the Xbox, GameCube, and Dreamcast. I think that’s one of the best console generations ever from a pure software quality perspective, and, in a perfect world, you would have owned every console and a great gaming PC as well.
Yet, the PS2’s immediate competition just couldn’t replicate (or offer a consistently viable alternative to) what Sony’s console brought to the table. Microsoft had almost no Japanese developer support, Nintendo alienated so many third-party companies, the Dreamcast died out, and PS2 owners ultimately ended up with exclusive (or early) access to many of the generation’s best games. The PS2 just offered a little bit of everything.
The PlayStation 2’s Longevity Was Stunning
Even if you tell yourself that the PS2 “died” when the PS3 was released in November 2006, that still means that the console enjoyed an incredible run of six strong years. However, most people know the PS2 didn’t really go anywhere until much later than that.
The PS3’s weak launch, the novelty of the Wii, and the Xbox 360’s hardware issues meant that a lot of people didn’t abandon their PS2s quite so easily. If anything, the PS2 enjoyed a second life when Sony released a new PS3 model that no longer supported native PS2 backward compatibility. To this day, the PS2 still commands a surprisingly high resale price.
The PlayStation 2’s Biggest Flaws Never Really Caught Up With It
The PS2 was not a perfect console. Its launch lineup was relatively weak, its DVD player was quickly replaced with better options, it wasn’t especially durable (and suffered from disc read errors in the long-term), its online options were generally terrible, and the console’s initial shortages were some of the worst the industry has ever seen.

Yet, none of that really mattered in the end. All those little things that should have strengthened the PS2’s competition turned out to be just that. Little things. Sony never really derailed the PS2’s success, and no major console of its generation was able to capitalize on the console’s most notable flaws.
