Nigeria suffer first and most important defeat of the competition

The Super Eagles of Nigeria went into the game against Tunisia being touted as the favorites to lift the AFCON trophy after winning their opening 3 matches but met with an entirely different fate as they were left stunned by the lone goal.

The Super Eagles started the game on a strong foot attacking down the flanks with Moses Simon gathering a considerable amount of the Tunisian defenders with him every time he got the ball down the left.

The Super Eagles had the opportunity to take the lead in the 17th minute but Awoniyi missed timed Chukwueze's cross and completely missed the flying header.

The Tunisians were without the services of key man and captain Wahbi Khazri and nine others after they all tested positive for COVID-19 but lady luck still decided to smile on them last night.

After the Super Eagles of Nigeria had failed to convert their chances all night, the Tunisians came out with a response in the 25th minute through Youssef Msakni whose shot beat Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye but was cleared off the line by Wilfred Ndidi.

Asides that, the Nigerian goalkeeper had little to do all through the first half and for most of the match period.

The second half brought a different story to light as the Tunisians took the lead two minutes in. Youssef Msakni left Ola Aina behind to unleash a fierce shot that beat Watford new signing Maduka Okoye.

The problems for the Nigerians quadrupled as Alex Iwobi was shown a straight red card for his challenge on Msakni.

Some Nigerians are of the notion that they would have had a far more different result had Napoli striker Victor Osimhen or Genk forward Paul Onuachu been present for the competition, seeing as  the both of them are on an entire different level to Awoniyi.

Nevertheless, they'll just have to try harder next time.
