The only time Zero tried to speak some sense into Yuki, only for him to immediately drop it (which, to be honest, is something Hino loved doing: introducing potentially bombshell questions or conflicts that we as readers, wanted resolved, then never following through, usually by having something interrupt the scene. It’s her convenient way to keep plausible deniability.)

Anyway, I feel like that moment was Hino’s ridiculous attempt to show us ''see I'm pointing out the elephant in the room, namely, that Kaname had an innocent child’s family massacred, had the child endure a brutal, excruciating transformation into a vampire, and set him on a path that would inevitably end in his execution(level E), all to use him as a pawn.'' And yet, Hino lets that elephant sit there untouched, never properly addressing it again.

I think this is part of why I don’t like Yuki. She has the appearance of someone with strong convictions, someone who stands up for what’s right, but when it comes time to challenge her moral beliefs or make tough choices, she either bails or the author conveniently reshapes the situation so she never has to make a decision. There are numerous examples of this.

She’s more afraid of upsetting someone she cares about than she is of facing hard truths. Maybe that comes from her abandonment issues. Honestly, if the same night she slept with Kaname, Zero had shown up wanting to sleep with her too, I feel like she would’ve let him hit it just to avoid hurting him. It’s like she doesn’t have a will of her own anymore.

I don’t think she was portrayed that way at the beginning of the manga, but Hino definitely pushed her character in that direction as the story progressed.

This is why I don't really care for a Zeki or Yume ending because it feels cheap either way.

So...

I've caught up with Vampire Knight Memories (honestly, I'm just checking them bcs of more possible HanaYori content, sorrynotsorry).

And now turns out that Matsuri will include Yuri plus incest between Ai and Rei? I mean, she's trying to not so lowkey show the female versions of KanamexZero being in love and also keeping the YukixZero thing?

Pls Hino-san LET VK REST IN PEACE! Before anyone says anything: I have absolutely nothing against Yuri, but incest? (yes, they're blood sis, bcs even if both don't share same bloodline daddy, they do share same mommy...) and God I don't know why I bother anymore.

I'll wait like another year to see if more content of Hanabusa and Yori is showed up in the following chapters (even if are bittersweet memories of Hanabusa, or showing their lovely son, Seiya❤️, I'll take it all).

Vampire Knight: what went wrong with Zero

Okay so I was basically obsessed with Vampire knight (the manga) when I was a teenager (I was also in love with Zero) and decided to give it a second read 10 years later. There are two main things that actually bothers me so much with this series. It had SO MUCH potential. It ended up being so unsatisfying. 1st disappointment: Zero!! I am not talking about the fact that he basically got scraps in the end with Yuki, that it felt like he was a second choice and not a deliberate priority choice from Yuki. (I felt like it was also the same with Kaname, it seems like she had neither of them as ''first and only'' choice). I will never get over how unsatisfying it was. Even after memories, their ending left me disappointed. But that was already talked about enough. I am talking about the fact that, unlike Kaname, he basically didn't get any story of his own during the second arc of the story (post academy). All he did was wander around, doing his usual hunter tasks and that's it. It's like the author kept his character because he was in relation to Yuki, so he only existed through her story. The author kept him in the story for the sake of the final plot. She could have done so much with him because he had the most interesting and complicated personal story/past in the serie. I was fully expecting him to go on his own ideological mission (like Kaname). He had strong ideological/political beliefs yet NOTHING was done about it. It made him seem so passive, almost weak. At least Kaname was very active in his own ideological agenda, he even did questionable things but it gave him an edge (yet I still managed to find Kaname boring but that's another story). Zero kept repeating "I will go after every single Pureblood" but NEVER DID ANYTHING TO EVEN ATTEMPT SOMETHING. After the 100th time of hearing that while staying passive, it ended up getting on my nerves. 2nd disappointment: The fact that Kaname was the one responsible for MASS MURDERING ZERO'S FAMILY and turning him into a monster/puppet, basically robbing him of everything in his life (I am putting this in all caps cause people forget just how wild of a unforgivable thing this is. Unforgivable isn't even a strong word.) yet it was completely glossed over by Yuki but amongst all people, by Zero too??? I don't mind that Kaname did it, I love antiheros behavior. What bothers me is the fact that Zero was letting the one who ordered the MASS MURDER OF HIS FAMILY hug him minutes after he discovered that Kaname was behind all this (the scene where Kaname was dying and holding Zero and Yuki in his arms). And then in memories, it was literally completely glossed over? I get that the author wanted to make Zero more mature and evolved, make him accept his vampire nature and be more tolerant of other vampires, but have him talk about Kaname almost fondly?? Going to his ice grave to get his blessings for him and Yuki's engagement?? Again, this made him seem so passive and weak. Also I was fully expecting Yuki to feel a lot resentment, anger and maybe even some kind of hatred towards Kaname for MASS MURDERING her husband's and long time childhood friend's family. But all we saw was her missing and loving him in thoughts and words. I wanted at least some kind of argument/quarel between Zero and Yuki about this, It would have made the story so much more interesting and coherent. Please, share your thoughts!

I have always loved how Yuki gave Zero the only handmade chocolate she got right (at least in appearance lol) while giving Kaname store-bought chocolate. To me, this perfectly encapsulates how I see her relationship with each of them: Zero represents comfort, trust, and authenticity but above all vulnerability. Someone Yuki can be real and imperfect with. Giving him her one successful homemade chocolate shows that, even unconsciously, she directs her truest self toward him. In contrast, the store-bought chocolate she gives to Kaname speaks to the distance between them. As much as she admires and reveres him, she chooses something safe and polished over something personal and imperfect, as if afraid that showing her true self might not be enough.

I think that was the moment I made my choice on who I'd ship hahah

Still the hottest zeki scene in my opinion. The tension is off the charts. I remember when that chapter first came out the whole zeki fandom was in shambles lol. I read it like 5 times a day when the translation came out. Too bad VK didn't take the route I wanted for them with that half baked disappointing ending. If anyone has a manga with childhood friends to enemies to lovers that has a more satisfying development, let me know!
