There are posts from 2016 that are being shared again about NSFW. I shouldn’t have to explain that those are no longer relevant.

There is a post from 3 days ago that the current sweep is being caused by a bug. This is not known if it is still relevant.

There are rumors that this is an attempt to purge pornbots, and legit blogs are getting caught in the crossfire. This has not been confirmed.

There are assumptions, again based on statements from 3 days ago, that this is in response to a legal matter regarding the IRA. Again, this has not been confirmed.

Until staff comes forward about the current events (that is, as of November 19th, 2018), nothing is confirmed as of yet. If you get purged, send staff a ticket, but until we get answers no one knows what is happening. Please stop spreading posts that do not have current sources.

Tumblr’s recent fuckup really highlighted how fragile this site’s become. Accounts are still being knocked down.

A few of my friends had their accounts purged. Some got them back, others still have yet to hear a peep from their support tickets, some on this list have yet to be affected (myself included). In either case, I’ve made this list to try and direct people to where to find them now, whether or not they’re still on tumblr.

After the 17th I will not be using tumblr anymore, period. Tumblr has altered their policies further that pretty much prevent me from being able to.

I have a big masterpost of artists that I’m updating with friends and peers that you can check and reblog, and I’ll be reblogging every now and then.

It kinda sucks that this is all happening. This my three blogs have follower counts ranging from 13k to 26k. Tumblr has been my primary platform for years now, and for all its problems I still liked how its tag system worked (when it worked), how you could make photosets of 10 images, how you could make gifsets, asks, and how the sharing features worked, allowing you to leave comments in replies, in tags, or on posts directly. For as bad as staff handled it, and as toxic as a lot of the communities here were, tumblr survived because mechanically it still had a lot going for it. No other site has matched that convenience and functionality yet.

So, thank you all for following me over these years, and I hope to see y’all elsewhere.

NSFW Changes coming December 17th

As if this shit wasn’t over yet.

On December 17th, Tumblr will be removing “adult content”

I’m probably not the first post on this, but:

Adult content technically was already banned in some respects, but on the 17th it is changing to include “photos, videos, GIFs and illustrations—that depicts sex acts.”

Drawn nudity will still be allowed, but this addendum is new. Reportedly the action this time is: if your blog is explicit and has adult content, the adult content will instead be privatized. The article does not say anything about purging accounts.

Whether they actually will or not is not known yet. Hopefully they simply hide violating posts, so people can still keep their blogs and post nudity and pinups, and they don’t hunt down blogs that have multiple posts that get hidden (like they did with the audio and video policy changes a few years back). There’s no telling what the end result will be.

I’d seriously advise moving to other platforms like Twitter, at least until a suitable alternative to Tumblr comes up. (If I lose my blog I’m gonna miss photosets and gifsets a lot.) https://twitter.com/zedrinbutt

As a precaution it may also be a good idea to unlink your NSFW and SFW accounts before the change, and then afterwords relink them if they survive.

A little thing for people moving to twitter:

if you’re like me and want to separate SFW and NSFW stuff, there are still options to do that on Twitter, though not natively (on PC).

On mobile, you can click your profile icon in the sidebar to add an additional account.

On desktop, there’s a website called Tweetdeck. https://tweetdeck.twitter.com/

You can use this to monitor multiple twitter feeds and interact with posts as any twitters you have signed on.

This has made it significantly easier to manage my alt account. (It used to be third party but then twitter bought it and shut down the mobile version. They kept the desktop version at least.) It also allows for scheduled posts, as long as said posts are singular and not photosets.

One thing to remember, Twitter is also very impulsive. It doesn’t have a good way to view your archives or anything, so sometimes it can be good to repost older art. It is NOT gallery-conscious (which is why I personally hate it, even if I use it) and limits your characters to 240, and photosets to 4. If you want an archive and gallery (that’s been independent since its birth), I’d recommend Newgrounds. https://www.newgrounds.com/ (though I wish NG had photosets too.)

I’ve been on both for a while. NG doesn’t have much by way of social media features, but it’s accommodating to various types of content. I’d use it in conjunction with more traditional social media.

Tumblr is going around and literally deleting accounts with NSFW blogs. Not just removing the blogs, but removing the entire accounts. This is not hyperbole.

Already a few of my friends have been hit. Since I’ve de-linked I think I might be okay.

social vs gallery sites

With artists moving to other sites, I think one important thing to keep in mind is the difference in the intentions behind a site’s social functionality.

When people voice concerns over twitter, people suggest things like Pixiv and Newgrounds.

Sites like Twitter, Facebook, Mastodon, and tumblr are what I consider social-media focused sites. These are sites that let you share other peoples’ work as well as your own, and focus more on moments. They have photosets and primarily focus on your dashboard. It can be much harder to find content in the backlog of stuff, but you also have way more interaction with followers. They also allow non-artists to do things such as content aggregate, which if done properly (with the built in sharing functions like retweets), help artists out.

Newgrounds, Pixiv, Deviantart, Furaffinity, etc. are gallery / content-focused instead. These are sites that focus more on your presenting pieces, archiving them, and focus less on interaction and more on the content. For these sites you usually don’t have a dashboard, or it’s not a focus, you instead have a notifications page. It’s very easy to check out prior works, but that’s all you can do aside from comment or review things--your sharing options otherwise are limited. Users who do not produce content are more limited in what they can do on these sites, and mostly just curate personal favorites or write reviews.

Tumblr had a caveat with tags and archives that let you run it as a gallery as well, which was very useful, even if it was more social-focused. Overall tumblr could function more how you wanted to, and kinda got the best of both worlds, which is why it’s a shame this is all happening.

Comparing Newgrounds to Twitter is moot because Newgrounds isn’t even in the same race as Twitter.

So the question shouldn’t be “should I get a Newgrounds account now that Tumblr is dying?” Because you should probably get one anyway, even if Tumblr were fine.

Or whatever gallery platform you want regardless. Get one in addition to whatever social media platform you end up on--choose one social and one gallery focused platform. Gallery sites are not as high maintenance as social ones as they’re not as impulsive, and are much more stable places for people to find you if something happens again.

But this is also why Twitter is the popular choice--because, in reality, it doesn’t have much competition without Tumblr, since most alternatives aren’t even social-focused. (hence why I’m eager to see how Pillowfort turns out.)

Newgrounds isn’t a tumblr alternative though. It’s not a social media platform. It’s a gallery and competes more with sites like Youtube and Deviantart than it does tumblr and twitter.
