“ And this is Zelda, daughter of the sea witch, Ursula. ” – a men presenting Zelda to the Fae's Court, and Zelda realising that Ursula tries her best to not look at her siblings who look all surprise
Maybe the fact that Ursula and Zelda came in the middle of one of those very famous fairie balls - Zelda was uncomfortable with the idea, but Ursula knew the impact of a proper entrance - could explain the reactions they received.
For a split second, everyone went silent. The music disappeared and all eyes were focused on the blonde elf. Confusion was written on everyone's face. Very few people dared to look at the she-demon, but those who did clearly felt the same confusion. Ursula could feel Zelda tensing up, but she had to admit that the girl hid it pretty well.
"The sea witch's daughter?" Morgana repeated from her throne, while raising an eyebrow.
"We were not aware of such a happy event occurring." Syrus, her loyal brother standing next to the throne, added, putting in words what everyone was so shocked about.
"Well, you probably guess from the shape of my ears that Ursula is not my biological mother. I'm a changeling. My parents came from here but did not want another mouth to feed, so they threw me in the mortal world. The Sea Witch found potential in me and raised me as her own. I could not be more grateful."
Ursula was pleased to see that Zelda looked the very image of sincerity while telling the lie they repeated together. If she was to pass as a fae, she couldn't seem to lie.
"Ah, yes, the changeling business is a plague for our people. It's a shame to see that so many of our own still practice such barbaric customs."
Yasmeen forced herself not to roll her eyes at the high queen's words. As if she herself did not fully abuse of that barbaric trade. As if she didn't abuse of her, for example.
"I must ask, however. Why be introduced today?"
"Should I not be introducing my daughter?" Ursula cut before Zelda could reply.
It was the first words she pronounced since she came in, and they were full of threats. She would not have her choices questioned, not here, not anywhere. Ulla was aware of her siblings looking at her with so many questions in their eyes, but right now she couldn't afford to break eye contact with Morgana. The high queen was the first to break the silence after a few seconds.
"Your daughter is most welcomed in here, and so are you." Of course she was. She couldn't afford to make an enemy out of her, not when she was so close to actually start a war with Triton. "We are glad that you found your way home, Zelda, daughter of Ursula. Please, enjoy the festivities. You are our guest of honor for the night."
These words were the official signal to start the ball again. The music came back and most faes started dancing, carefully avoiding the witch. But some people were still immobile.
Blue was torned between the deep rage of seeing Ursula showing her face just weeks after they found out she was the one who helped Aeron kidnap Calypso, and the absolute confusion at seeing Zelda's face. He didn't know why, he didn't know the girl, but her face... He felt like he saw her somewhere.
Calypso was equally confused, but way more hurt. The fight with Ursula left quite a mark on her. She felt betrayed like she never been before. And now she found out Ursula had a daughter?! She was about the be even more hurt by Aeron's reaction, though.
The two of them were bickering, as always. Even more than before, actually. They kissed - truly kissed a few days ago. Since that day, Aeron was even more insufferable and liked to push on any buttons he could find to make her mad. But at this very moment, when she was about to speak to him, his eyes was fixed on Zelda. And the next second, he went to her.
Aeron didn't expect to see Zelda's face ever again. Not after she left without saying a word. And not in that context, where she came lying to the high seelie queen. For he knew that she wasn't a fae but an elf. That kind of lie was dangerous and she must have her reasons to proclaim that. He was dying to know them. But more importantly, he was dying to talk to her again. So he came in front of her before any of his siblings. He knew that Morgana would expect them all to try to be close to the sea witch's proclaimed daughter, to use her as an asset. But he would be damned if he let any of his siblings dance with Zelda. Plus, no one would be surprised that he proposed. He had the reputation of being a wreck after all, and Zelda was a pretty girl.
"Can I have this dance, my lady?"
A lot of words passed in the look they exchanged. They both understood that they could not talk in here, not really. He'll have to drag her in a secret place. But for now, they had to play the part. So she smiled and he took her hand, kissing it before dragging her to the dance floor. He was focused on her smile, and couldn't see Calypso leaving the room in the background.
Zelda quickly looked at Ursula, who watched over her from a corner of a room, a glass of wine in her hand, assessing if Aeron would be a problem or not. A few brave faes tried to approach her to ask her to dance, but the look she gave them dissuaded the others to even try to come near her.
Malachai did, though. Of course he did. He looked mad, which was to be expected. Ursula made a special effort to ignore Calypso and Blue's gazes, but Kai wasn't about to give her the choice. A lecture was to come.
He was discreet, though. But some faes looked at him with pity in their eyes. Not many people knew about their blood link - Morgana and her children knew, of course. But Triton made so many efforts for it to be a secret than so few people knew about his children being Ursula's siblings.
"What is the meaning of this?"
"You'll have to be more specific."
"What are you doing, Ursula?"
"Drinking wine. This is what grown-ups drink when-"
"Stop messing with me, I'm serious."
Ulla sighed and met his red eyes. He was furious, she did not have to know him to see that. Somehow it made her smile - that little sister instinct was hard to turn off.
"You do look serious yes. You have that big serious wrinkle in the middle of your brows." She started, pleased to annoy him.
"Sometimes I really want to strangle you..."
"Only sometimes?"
"Ulla, what game are you playing?"
"I told you. Be more specific. I love playing many games at once."
"You're here. Merely days after breaking Calypso's heart!"
"If it's an apology you want-"
"An apology would be great actually. But I know better than to expect one from you."
"Ah, you're finally using your brain. I knew you'd get there eventually."
"Shut up. What is your plan there? Who's that girl?"
"My daughter."
"Stop lying to me. You're not the motherly kind."
"On that much we agree. But she's my daughter all the same. So if you'll excuse me, as much as I'd love bickering about it all night, I actually have important stuffs to do. Here." She put her drink in his hands. "So you'll relax a little. You look like your father with that face."
"Ulla..."
Deep down she actually did want to talk to him. But she had more important stuff to do than actually admit it to herself. So she went away, knowing she had things to discuss with the high queen.
She still kept an eye on Zelda. The blonde was still dancing with Aeron, and both their smiles would potentially be a problem at some point. For now, she wasn't the only one to look at them.
Yasmeen knew she should be following Calypso, but here she was, in natural hiding, looking at the new blonde girl. She knew something was off. And she knew she'd find out what it was.
