From second hand reports, I've heard good things about Wing Lam.
This is probably a long shot, but does anyone know a good brand to buy a chain whip from? I received one as a gift from a visiting student from another school like 14 years ago, and I keep breaking it. The chain links come apart while I'm practicing, so I can't really safely use it anymore. I can put them back together, but it just comes apart at another spot later.

My baseline is that all those “self defense” videos you see online are trash. You’re not going to cross block a freakin baseball bat with your forearms. You’re not going to execute a kimura or a takedown because you saw a video about them once. You’re not parrying punches if you’ve never had someone throw punches at you. Especially not in a high pressure situation.
Martial arts require hours and hours (months) of practice to be even semi-practical in semi-live (rolling, sparring), let alone a situation where people are trying to actively hurt you.
But there is one trope in these videos that drives me absolutely insane. It’s by far the most dangerous and could easily result in death. And it’s surprisingly easy to fix.
Tumblr media
When someone has you from behind in a choke like you see here, fight the hands. Specifically the arms. Especially the one actively choking you. Try to get you chin down beneath the choking arm. Pull that hand off the top of your head and the choking arm down. Do not try to swing down between their legs. Do not try to step back and hit a complicated rear sweep takedown you’ve never even practiced before.
It only takes like 5 seconds to go out from a rear naked choke depending on how deep that thing is locked in and how competent the choker is. And if you go out and they hold on, you can get serious brain damage from the lack of oxygen/blood going to your brain. You could literally die within a minute. And for some stupid reason, all these “self defense” videos by so called “women’s self defense experts” tell you to ignore the choke. And it should be a fucking crime.

Since it is a southern kung fu style, Choy Lay Fut uses very low stances for stability and power, coupled with strong hip movements.
I've been enjoying these weighted stretches, not only do they help me strengthen the stances weak points, but I've been seeing some mobility gains too. I'm getting quite close to a full side split. 💪😜🦇

Sometimes I swear that there are only two types of weapons in Bagua: Those that are are ridiculously oversized versions of normal weapons. Along with those that look like they should be wielded by a Klingon.

Have always wanted to talk about this. Martial arts gyms are awash in creeps, which isn’t really unique I guess.
If you follow MMA closely, you might have noticed a lot of women (especially young women) are dating their coaches who tend to be like 15+ years older than them. The really creepy part is a lot of them have known their coaches since like middle school. The most famous case is Pat Barry and Rose Namajunas, who allegedly started dating when Rose like like 14 and Barry was like 30ish. But there are others - Jim West and Aspen Ladd, whatever the Shevchenkos and Paul Fedetov, and way more. It’s creepy. And you can read all types of stories about other gyms.

And these weren’t even the ones I was looking for. They just popped up on Google. Point being, we should look out for one another. There are way too many people who are comfortable in the martial arts community being predators. Look at Lloyd Irvin.
