First, make sure you save every message he has sent you and that you have sent him. Is he threatening to post your pictures and videos unless you do something that he wants? Make especially sure to save those.

If he lives in the US, what he is doing is blackmail and is illegal. Additionally, many states have “revenge porn” laws that may cover this. If you and he both live in the US, the laws of either your state or his can apply.

Make as clear as possible that you are not going to take this and that you are not afraid to go to the authorities. Make sure he understands that you have all of his messages and threats saved. Keep a record of all of his social media accounts that you know of. If you don’t know his real name or where he lives, his social media providers can help track down his up address- for example, if this is happening on tumblr, the authorities can get his IP address from tumblr itself and track down where he lives based on that. If you have an email address, a Facebook account, anything like that, you have even more ammunition but all you need is one.

Gather up all your information that you have on him and put it in one place. Show him what you have and let him know that it will all be shared with the authorities if his threats do not cease. Tell him that you are ready and willing to pursue charges. This almost always makes people back down.

If you can, find out his real name and turn the tables- send his mother and grandmother screenshots of the threats he is making. Get out ahead of him.

I can tell you from experience that 90% of the time, people who make these threats do not follow through. They are trying to get what they want out of you with a minimum amount of effort. Once they realize that it’s going to be more trouble than it is worth, they move on.

No matter what, though, do not give in to whatever he is demanding.

If he does follow through, he is in a lot more trouble than you.
