I've hated literally everything I've doodled today but take the gems from my attempts nonetheless.

Few things kill my motivation like writing a fic with dialogue taken directly from the source, but it's also so rewarding to get that canon play-by-play in before you put your own twist on it.

The worst part of relating to Winn for me is that I get his character but I hate his taste. Oh how I hate Sci-Fi and Star Wars and whatnot.
Winn, my beautiful stereotypical nerd, how could you betray me.

I feel like before anyone happens to look at this blog ever I should let people know that I have only watched the seasons of Supergirl that have Winn.
I absolutely do not care for anything after season three—

Winn: *trying to cover for Kara with a lot of babbling*
Alex: Shh... Do you hear that?
Winn: No... What was it?
Alex: That was the sound of my patience shattering into a billion different pieces.

thinking about kara introducing herself to schott sr in 1x10 as "a friend of your son's"
thinking about this introduction, the most informal she's ever been to a civilian, being the thing that lets winns dad figure it all out.
her identity, her relationships, specifically her relationship with his son. he doesn't make a big flashy event of it, because that's not his style. psychological torment is more up his alley. he does, however, use this information to find out where winn is going to be, uses this information to drug and kidnap him literally right outside her apartment
thinking about how karas negligence, how one tiny, indiscriminate slip of the tongue, almost cost her best friend his life.
thinking about this absolutely eating kara up, completely destroying her with guilt, because it's one thing to be making mistakes starting out and learning things as a brand new superhero, but it's an entirely different conversation when those mistakes, however indiscernible they are from the public eye, put the lives of the people she loves and countless others at risk
and of course, winn wasn't there. so he doesn't know why kara is being so weird and fragile, avoiding him, seemingly on the verge of tears every time he tries to have a conversation longer than three minutes. he just thinks she's being overprotective, spending too much time in the supergirl mindset and thinking he needs to be saved all the time. how is he to know kara almost killed him? maybe he thinks it's his fault, that maybe it isn't so easy for a friendship to bounce back after one party confesses their feelings.
thinking about 1x10 angst, but make it kara

Winn Schott Headcanons
Winn Schott is SO touch starved. He didn't have any friends before he met Kara and the first time she rested her shoulder in his, his brain lit up.
He names all his "babies" which are pcs, printers, even the office coffee maker.
When he gets anxious, he starts tapping his fingers anywhere he can. His thigh, his other hand, desks, etc
Winn doesn't handle anger in others great. At first, he didn't get why, but once his mom told him that his dad was, in fact, always a terribly controlling and angry father, it all clicked.
He has a bunch of little scars on his fingers from working with his dad as a little boy and accidentally missing with the soldering tool. He still gets new ones from projects he works on at home.
Winn wishes he could cry more. Instead, it's usually just a tear or 2 and harsh breathing for 30 minutes.
He's such a people pleaser. He has to be consciously aware of if his opinion on a subject is actually his opinion or if he's changing his thoughts to make the other person happy because it was ingrained in him since childhood.
He really struggles with feeling like a person. Especially when someone strongarms him into doing smth. Could be anything from fixing their computer to his dad trying to make him kill Chester Dunholtz

And if I told you I think Winn ABSOLUTELY has some kind of dissociative disorder from childhood and that's likely one of the reasons it feels like his father just suddenly snapped one day

Winn Schott to me is a perfect example of childhood emotional abuse/neglect in a more subtle way to the audience. Where he doesn't realize just how controlling and emotionally neglectful his father was to him until he's faced with it again years later.
Because hey man. His father doesn't love him. He loves the CONCEPT of him. Loves the idea of his son and when you do that shit, it comes out in the way you treat your child even if you don't realize. Think about how Winslow Sr. ignores that Winn CLEARLY doesn't support his plans to kill Dunholtz and instead just tells him not to worry about the decision because it's already been made for him. Now imagine that same energy put onto a small child who maybe, idk, doesn't want to listen to his dad about something because he's 11 or younger and when you're 11, you are gaining a realization of autonomy and advocating for yourself. A parent who ignores their child's emotional needs as an adult will logically have also done so when they were young.
That kind of emotional neglect is subtle in the way that it appears, especially to a young child and can even seem totally normal to an outsider but it leaves a lasting mark on the kid's psyche.
