Chapter 6: In Which Brother Maldwyn and Cadwallon Talk

Chapter Summary: Maldwyn makes Theobald’s family a proper meal and speaks with Cadwallon.

Excerpt:

Theobald was in the process of handing Maldwyn more vegetable scraps for the stock when the kitchen door opened. Cadwallon had stepped inside. The man froze when he saw the two monks. Maldwyn stared at him. Cadwallon stared back. Then he tried to leave. Maldwyn, quite frankly, was becoming a bit annoyed by this nonsense and he refused to stay in a house where someone was going out of his way to avoid him. Besides, someone was bound to notice Cadwallon’s strange behaviour and ask why he was acting the way he was. That could put them both at risk.  “Stop,” Maldwyn’s voice rang out in the kitchen. It was a strong, clear tone and one not to disobey.  Cadwallon stopped. “Shut the door.” Cadwallon slowly shut the door with trembling hands.

John opened the door. Gilbert lay in bed, wrapped in five different blankets, with only his plump face peeking out from the wool. Had the situation not been so serious, John might have laughed at his companion’s sulking. Instead, he smiled as gently as he could.

“How are you feeling?” He shut the door. “Chilled to the bone.” John hesitated before asking, “Would you like me to help you warm up?” “How do you plan to do that?” “Er, I could come under the blankets with you. Only if you want.” Gilbert thought for a moment before nodding. “Yes, quickly.” John slipped off his shoes and crawled under the many blankets. Gilbert was cool to the touch and he shivered.

He's trying to enjoy the morning before chapter where he has to actually do his job (which he hates). His job mainly consists of making sure the scriptorium's orders go out on time and disciplining his monks/nuns for sleeping with each other and getting into fist fights.

Finally finished this piece! Thank GOD. I have been working on it on and off for a few months now, so I am glad to have finally finished it. I'm not 100% pleased with the anatomy. I AM pleased it is done.
