“Oh wow. I’ve always wanted to go.” She said. She had never left DC before moving here. “I am, yeah. I worry about them a lot out there without me.” She admitted. She knew they were doing better now that they didn’t have to pay for Tali living with them, but she was still worried anytime she didn’t hear back from her parents quick enough. “That’s kind of depressing, yanno.” She told Lola. “You have two dogs? What kind? What are their names? I love animals.” She asked. “I’m studying animal sciences. Loren inspired me.” She started to lead towards the quad with Lola. “I’m sure she’d love to meet you.”

“Yeah. Gangs are kinda shit, but you keep going and keep moving. What about you? Where are you from?” she asked, pushing her glasses up her nose. “Oh, I can understand that. Kind of. I wasn’t really ignored as a kid but I knew how to make myself invisible. It made it easier for my parents.” she admitted. Tali didn’t like to admit it but she had learned that being the perfect child was the easiest thing for her parents, and not needing anything helped when they were homeless. She could make herself invisible, and she hated it. “I don’t think I’d ever want to read minds. I don’t think I could deal with hearing peoples negative thoughts about me and pretend I hadn’t heard them.” she shrugged. “Oh yes, Loren. She’s a raven I helped raise. We are very close, and ravens are extremely smart. I had to watch her when I first moved in to make sure she wouldn’t get lost but she knows to stay on campus now or at least knows what time to come back to my dorm at night. If you want we can meet up with her. She’s very friendly.”

“New York City”, Lola said simply. There were definitely some differences in their upbringings and Lola was surprised to find that the other woman could understand what Lola was saying. “Are you still close with your parents?” she asked curiously. “I’m used to people saying negative things about me so I think I could deal with that. I’d just like to be able to read people’s true intentions. It could have saved me a lot of pain in the past”. Lola wasn’t usually this honest with people, especially those that she didn’t know, but she found it quite easy to talk to this stranger. “That’s really cool. We own two dogs but they’re definitely not switched on enough to come back at night. If we let them out unsupervised, we’d never see them ago”, Lola said, rolling her eyes as she chuckled. “Yeah, I’d like to meet her”.

“I would be extremely grateful.” She laughed. She started to take her long hair and put it in a ponytail. She was caught off guard by his question, and she shook her head. “No, I’m not in a rush. You really want to meet her?” She asked, grinning from ear to ear at the idea.

“Just a bit.” she joked, running a hand through her long hair. She chuckled at Emery. “No, I don’t have a girlfriend. At least not yet.” she said, grinning. “I have a pet raven named Loren. She’s a real sweetheart, and is probably in the quad somewhere right now.”

Em wasn’t a stranger to pressure but the difference was that his pressures were generally self inflicted. His mother only wanted the best for him and he had stopped caring what his father thought many years ago. “Well, I’ll be sure to send any cute girls in your direction”, Em said with a friendly grin. “Holy shit. You’re not in a rush, are you? Because I have a bunch of follow up questions and I really, really want to meet Loren”.

“It makes sense that you don’t want anything to do with fraternities then”, Lola said simply. She hadn’t had the same kind of upbringing but she could clearly see where the other woman was coming from. “Please, I was the invisible child without even trying. And you let her fly around freely and trust that she’ll come back?” Lola asked, wanting to know more about the situation.

“Must be a lot of pressure”, Em said simply. As someone who put a lot of pressure on himself, he felt like he could understand, at least slightly. “You mean girlfriend when you say bird, right?” he asked, assuming that she was using slang. She couldn’t be talking about a real bird, could she?

“I’m fiiiine, I’m just tipsy,” Ella said, though clearly she wasn’t fooling anyone. When the brunette turned down the drink, Ella gave a small shrug, taking a sip out of the glass herself. “I’m Ella. I don’t come here very often, so maybe that’s why we haven’t met. I normally don’t leave my room too much.”

Tali watched Ella, and nodded. She could tell the girl was blasted, and it made her slightly nervous. She just wanted to make sure that this Ella chick was going to be okay. She took a swig of her drink, and reached her hand out. “It’s nice to meet you Ella. You should come out of your room more, you’re too pretty to hide all day.” she grinned. “I don’t come here very often either. I’m usually in the quad studying with my bird.”

Mystery whiteness? Does she not remember part of what she is? I’m probably a whole bunch of other stuff, but mostly I’m Cuban so that’s all I really decide to say when I’m talking about what I am. I haven’t heard that in - never. I’ve never heard that. Uh, thanks.

“Taking a break on the drinks is no fun,” Ella said, shaking her head. “Yeah, I just needed to get my mind off of some things. And let me just say, my mind is off of them. Completely. I can barely remember what I was upset about. Y’know these drinks are really great. You should try one,” she told the girl, pushing a glass over towards her.

Tali smiled. “Yeah well you’re getting pretty wasted here.” she said, before sitting down next to the girl. “I think I’ll pass with one of those. Not my style.” she shrugged, waving over the bartender to order from. “I”m Tali by the way. I haven’t seen you before.”

“Are you here on a scholarship or something?” Em asked as the two of them walked. “Yeah, the dorm rooms are actually surprisingly nice, especially if you get a decent roommate. Hopefully they’ll end up spending most of their time with a partner or with friends and you’ll have the place primarily to yourself”.

“Hella scholarship.” she admitted. “Oh they are nice honestly. I don’t know much about my roommate. I don’t even think I could point them out to you. They’re okay with my bird and that’s all I care about.”

“You talk like someone who has had a lot of exposure to gangs”, Lola said softly, hoping that mentioning it wouldn’t upset the other woman. “I can’t say I’ve ever really thought much about flying. When I was younger, that definitely wasn’t the superhero power I wished for”, she laughed. “So birds are your thing, huh? What else do you like about them?”

“Well I grew up in the poor part of DC...Well all of the poor parts. Gangs were apart of the culture over there.” She shrugged, trying to sound nonchalant. “What superpower did you want? I bet you were an invisible girl.” she grinned. “Birds are my thing. First, they’re beautiful, second they are so smart. You need to meet my bird, Loren. She’s usually out in the quad.”

“Oh hey, haveyou come to join me?” Ella said, her speech slurred as she gave a quick wink to the person who had just walked up. “Y’know, this issrandom.. but the bartender keeps giving me free drinks and I can’ttell if it’s because heknows who I am or if he’strying to hit on me.”

“Oh hey there.” Tali stopped as she walked through the bar. The blonde was very drunk and was slurring her words, and she immediately felt nervous for the woman. “I think it’s time to take a break on any of the drinks, hun.” she said, smiling at her. “You here alone sweetness?”
