Final Proposal
For my final project, I propose that I can expand on my animation and my performance piece. I want to make the final theme color, given the shots of the colored pencils moving into place. In my performance project I included life in color with the drum machine and the shots. I want to focus as color as my final theme because it brings life to people and art. Art itself revolves around the notion of color and vibrance and I want to bring that to my final by using sound and more creative ways to interconnect color with video.
I wanted to show that I am very unartistic by trying to improve by getting better and better at drawing a shoe.

Week 10 Reading: Magic and Illusion
Magic and Illusion
Jan Svankmajer's work demonstrates an alternate reality where raw meat can move and talk. The point is to take two figures, two subjects and have them do the impossible. They explore the objects in the house. The fear is extracted by the intensity of the two living pieces of meat and cooking them. This symbolizes death and fear, that part snaps viewers back into reality. The cutting of the meat is almost like a birth of two beings, if you take a step back and look at this, it is almost a vicious cycle that can be compared to a human life cycle.

I chose this picture as the main representation for torture and suffering. I chose this picture because it is labelled “Felix in Exile” when my mind goes to exile, I think of torture. Looking back, torture was used as corporal punishment. Public executions took place while criminality kept going on in the streets of old England. Those public execution quickly transformed into prison cells. The artist achieves the sense of pain and suffering through the general idea of isolation. Most of the animations are one thing transforming into another, I saw the metamorphosis as a transformation of pain and suffering through time in America.

The point of this video was to show the process that goes behind creating a pice of work. The little attention to detail and the different creations your mind can make in the moment shows how much effort goes into it. Anyone can create a piece of art that speaks directly to the soul. The concentration and focus shows the outcome of good work. This is the point of view of an artist who needs to work for what they want.

Point of View Idea Proposal
Idea proposal #1: Silent Pianist
I have shot footage of my friends process of making music. The 3 scenes show the subject playing the piano. The scenes are shot from different perspectives and angles. The angles are supposed to show different perspectives of one's around the piano. The last shot is a perspective shot of  the pianist going down scales and using the many buttons and tools he can use to manipulate sound. However, there are no sound elements in the video itself, thus, it helps provoke thought from viewers and gives off a sense of mystery. The perspectives and scenes differ. The whole concept of the video revolves around an artists process in creating sound. It creates the idea of doing hard work to produce that others enjoy. The video itself is also a production that creates thought and curiosity. The piano is a wonderful instrument that thrives with sound and range. This will make people think rather than hear.
Idea proposal #2: Glow Show
For my second proposal, I used my friends EDM machine to create an abundance of light and shadow. This has a story, the first shot is me opening my laptop, this suggests that I am about to work on something important. The next shot cuts to the EDM machine in the dark, a larger square of multiple smaller squares appears. At first, the camera is not focused on the machine, creating a mysterious beginning. This makes the viewers wonder what's about to illuminate the screen. The lights create sound, I know that we are not supposed to include sound in the project. So by taking out the sound, it subtracts an element but the light itself replaces that aspect of sound. The light in pure darkness resonates with the viewers, by creating different perspectives, the shots are more memorable. You see someone infatuated with creating sound, similar to the Silent Pianist, the illusion of sound haunts the whole video.

I liked how Rist overlaps two projections of two different components. The first projection is of a girl smashing a car window. The other projection is of nature and flowers. Both projections overlap and creates an illusion that the woman is hitting the other projection with her mallet. The idea of two points of view are projected. One from someone looking at nature and another of a shameless girl not having a care in the world. There are almost two realities which makes this video special.

Week 7 Reading
1. The Lip Syncing video connects body parts to artwork in the sense that the camera is focused on the main subjects lips. This forces viewers to watch his lips because that is the performative aspect of his video. This is the captivation he is looking for on part of the viewer.
2.This video is a feminist critique of the art world because the main subject is playing with her hair and focusing on pure vanity. She is looking in the mirror, almost making a statement with her gestures. This is a stereotypical video of what the world perceives a women in this generation to be doing. This is similar to gestures because she is messing up her image and her vanity in order to send a message out to the world.

My project for performance revolves around the concept of reflection. The focus is set in the reflections of all of my subjects. For instance, the microwave itself lets off a gleam that is very dark and mysterious. Over the course of the video I place things on the ledge of my window. This will help viewers focus on the small things that are not so apparent in the shot. Reflection is a very important, thought provoking concept because there are many types of it. Self reflection, a simple reflection in a mirror or a microwave. Reflection can provoke certain things such as vanity and hatred.
Self reflection is something that everyone needs to do in order to grow as human being. My video conveys the different forms of reflection. Reflection of self is derived from the small things that add up and create feelings. These feelings can cause pain, relief, joy and grief. They can make one feel as if they have purpose. Those feelings can take away the joy from a person and the self esteem that made them who they are today. Reflection can mean to think back and look at your mistakes and own up to those mistakes. Reflection can empower someone and motivate someone to do better and live a fulfilling life.

Reflecting on this performance, my first shoot was pretty rough. I thought simply applying lipstick to my face and lipgloss makes a statement of self love despite what anyone else thinks, says or does. I rushed to the lab to shoot the Apple piece after I lost my SD card. I wanted to keep going on this concept of self love and self reflection. I simply focused my camera on the reflection of the light and think I can further take advantage of the little reflections that are out of focus. Those reflections hold so much purpose and emphasis on what I shot and how I shot it. It makes a statement and I wanna continue making that statement in my work. It shows how people take the little reflections that are so out of focus in their eyes and lack emphasis or matter. The real importance of reflection is in the things that work and matter to one.

Video Art Chapter 2
1) Why do you think the author of the article says that Nam June Paik's "Zen for FIlm" is a reaction to films such as Stan Brakhage's "Mothlight?"
The author was baffled that Brakhage eliminated the whole screen entirely. This was a new performance for film makers, it crossed media. It was an out of this world jump that veered away from the norm.
2) Watch the first half of this explanation of the Fluxus movement. Why do you think the Fluxus movement was so influential for early practitioners of video art?
This art challenged peoples perspectives on the concept of what art was. It was obsessive of having a simple narrative. It allowed artists to create art and performance in film itself. Mainstream media caused a chain reaction across artists. It made people raise the question of “does video have to have a cohesive narrative?” The Fluxus movement would interact with audiences and create movement and performance. This created a mass story that had no name or narrative.

Video Art Intro
In the section entitled "A Narcissistic Art?" the author discusses several readings of Vito Acconci's Centers (linked below) which disagree about whether the piece is actually narcissistic. What is your reading of the work-- is it narcissistic (or the opposite), and why?
I agree that the piece is narcissistic. The video is focused on the artist himself pointing at the camera in anger. He creates a new way of creating a story by expressing emotion and the whole video revolves around his facial expressions. He makes his piece interactive by pointing at the audience, the screen is whoever is watching. The center subject is purely focused on the viewer and the subjects relationship. This is what makes his piece narcissistic because it is mostly about him.
2) Nam June Paik is mentioned in the section "Blurring the Boundaries." Below is video documentation of a Nam June Paik piece. What boundaries does it blur, and how does it blur them?
It blurs the boundaries of the four lines that make up the frame by putting overlay on the footage. This provokes the video maker to jump to bigger boundaries that intrigued viewers.

My seeing in motion part two assignment focuses on  Chiaroscuro and the way that shadow plays a role in video. The angle took time to think and plan out because I wanted to create a world of shadow as a source of reflection.  It was difficult to create a clean space thus I focused on what the shadow was creating; hence the idea of shadow being used to mirror the original object. The playfulness in the shadow’s movement stayed prominent in this video and gave the takes more redeeming qualities. I kept the microphone as a subject because the whole point of Chiaroscuro is to create an image that punctuates shadow and light. The red light on the microphone is a crucial part of what this video needs to achieve. In comparison, the glowing light from the oil diffuser is seen on the bottom half of the shot. This keeps the glow of the much needed light other than the flashlight I am using during filming. This gives the whole shot a mysterious tint which is thought provoking, making people wonder “where is this glow coming from?” This video offers many different subjects that can demonstrate shadows finest qualities, and play into that Chiaroscuro vibe by adding in surprising flickers of unforseen light.
