All three inhabitants of the lake house feel guilty on father’s day.

Morgan knew her dad liked to be in his workshop. She saw him go in there a lot, especially when he was scared, and he always came out happy again. Her mom said that her dad goes in there to be happier, that that he likes being in his workshop so much, so they shouldn’t worry when he’s in there for a long long time. She knows he likes spending time there. And she thought father’s day was supposed to be about her dad, so why doesn’t he go to his workshop on his day? Is it her fault? Is it because she’s distracting him? She tries to tell him, but it just makes him sadder. He says he wants to spend time with her, but when he thinks she’s asleep, he goes to his workshop immediately. It’s her fault. she knows it.

Pepper is never sure where tony’s head is at for father’s day. she doesn’t know if she should mention Peter, if she should distract Morgan so that he gets some alone time, if she should call up Rhodey for a visit, anything. He always looks particularly haunted on father’s day It’s not bad enough that Morgan notices, thank goodness, but she knows him well enough to see it. Should she distract him? Should she give him space? She asks, and he says that he’s happy for anything, he just wants time with his wife and child. The best gift she ever gave him for father’s day was something she found in the SI files - the permission slip for peter’s class field trip to SI, where peter wrote tony’s personal number as his emergency contact. Some part of her knows that father’s day is both appreciating what he has and what he’s lost.

Tony spends father’s day trying to find non-mechanical things to do with Morgan, remembering the fathers days in his own dads workshops as a child, wondering what fathers days looked like for Howard while tony was at boarding school, and trying not to feel like he shipped Peter to his own boarding school, by letting him get on that spaceship. Tony spends father’s day trying to convince himself that he’s done better than howard. He never fully convinces himself.

“Yeah, kid? Like what you see?” Tony grinned.

Peter stuttered, his eyes so wide they might pop out. “Yes—I—it’s just—this car is worth more than me.”

Tony frowned. He grabbed the kid by the shoulders and forced him to meet his eyes. “Nothing is worth more than you, kid.”

Peter’s cheeks blushed a deep cherry red. He stared at Tony, dumbfounded. “Th-thanks, Mr. Stark.”

Tony cleared his throat, averting his gaze and leaving Peter with an awkward pat on the shoulder. “Yes, well. Cars decrease in value. Children are an investment, or whatever.”

Peter’s lips twitched. Here was the mentor he knew and loved. “Sure, Mr. Stark.”
