There’s a couple things that bug me about the new spiderverse movie…

No Doc Ock fanart, seriously where the fuck is it?

I can’t find that one song that plays when Peni is fixing up the goober (That sentence sounds strange)

Very disappointing.

The art and design of Into the Spider-Verse was absolutely SUPERB. The most visually unique movie I have ever seen, period. I know absolutely nothing about design and animation but I’m STILL majorly geeking out. That’s how good it is.

It’s a living comic book. That’s the best way I can think to describe it. The creative team literally brought a comic book to life in every way and it felt so natural, which was maybe the most impressive part. The faces looked almost 2-D because of the lines, but then the bodies looked like 3-D animation and it all flowed together so well and I can’t explain it right but it was so GOOD. And then they had narration panels and onomatopoeia just like in a comic book that were so seamlessly integrated into the action that it felt totally natural and organic to the world that had been built. I’m just speechless.

And THEN, once we had almost gotten used to this art style that was so unique it was almost a shock at first, they throw MORE designs at us that are all different when they introduced the spider people of other dimensions. Miles, Peter B, and Gwen looked different from Peni who looked different from Spider-Man Noir who looked different from Spider-Ham. So then there’s, like, several different design styles against a backdrop of a style that was ALREADY so different and revolutionary and it was just MIND BLOWING

But the creative team wasn’t done, no no, they weren’t satisfied with revolutionizing computer animation right off the bat, they weren’t satisfied with seamlessly having several different styles on screen at once. They hit the final battle and said to themselves “hey! Let’s shake it up again and change our aesthetic to be even MORE visually stunning!” And it was absolute gorgeous chaos of color and movement, but in the middle of it all, I distinctly thought to myself that we were no longer watching a living comic book, we were watching living art.

That’s what Into the Spider-Verse is. It is art.

Just so you know there was a scene during my test screening of into the spiderverse where Peter Porker says fuck and I just went and watched the final film tonight and they cut it out. It appeared in a speech bubble with a bunch of symbols like “f$&@!”. He also had a horrifying line about one of his family members dying and it smelling like singed bacon that legit got gasps during the test screening but they cut that as well. I just want you to know they made John Mulaney say so much weird shit that did not make it into the final cut of the film and y’all better pray they put it in the extended features because I was DEVASTATED at some of the jokes they removed.
