After numerous discussion, we have decided to abandon our event idea as we realised that there are many issues and complications that are too difficult to solve, and that rather than putting too much pressure on ourselves to solve them, the more mature method is to let it go and move on.

Shortly after agreeing to discard the auction event, we came up with another concept.

Below are photos from my VAPD of a summary our concept. I wrote these notes after discussing with my group ideas for our new event to gain a better understanding of its meaning.

Assessment Task 3 p.2

We started brainstorming what objects we could put up for sale and how we could make it. We decided that we would all make boxes and make them all look different in terms of the way it looks on the outside.

We want to explore different materials that have different textures. This adds another element to the work, another aspect of the object that could potentially sway the person to bid for the item. We also want to play with audience perception as we think it’d be interesting to see how bidders will react when the object is not what it says it is on the outside (e.g. ‘WARNING! Fragile!’ sticker on the box, but inside the box is an unbreakable item).

We also though that it’d be interesting if some of the items didn’t have anything at all, thus, destroying its value to anyone. This will be an interesting twist to the auction as a person would eventually end up paying good money for nothing.

Below is a drawing of an idea for one the object/box. We are still not sure about what materials we will use for the other three objects and how we will run the auction, but those details will come to us over time.

Assessment Task 3 p.1

As a group, we agreed that we would like to create an event that is based around the topic of ‘desire’ because we felt as if everyone could relate to that feeling of wanting or needing something that we don’t have.

This branched off to the idea of hosting an auction in our studio space, where the members of the class are invited to bid for a series of items before them. Inside these items is a mystery that no one knows, therefore, individuals are bidding for items that they do not know its worth. The act of bidding for the object reveals the persons desire to possess it as well as its content inside (if it even has anything inside it). We came up with this idea after talking about eBay and how there is an option to auction a product rather than selling it for a set price.

The object itself was inspired by mystery boxes, which was popularised by several media influencers and entertainers. The element of surprise is what makes the act of purchasing the box enticing, as you never know if you’re going to strike big. When the highest bidder wins the auction, they are free to do what they want with the box (open it). Having the item already, seeing its actual worth and value can affect their desire to obtain the object.

This concept explores the weekly topic of ‘desire’ in conjunction with ‘value’ and ‘affect’.

For today’s group activity, we were told to “find a signal and interrupt it”

For this we chose to explore human senses. We disrupt the natural way we communicate with our environment. We are interupting and interfering by taking away the ability of free will - moving, seeing, speaking, touching, hearing.

ADAD1002 Assessment 2: FINAL WORK

Concept Statement

The original approach to the concept of a contemporary creative rebellion consisted of recreating anti-art, where the idea of “art is obsolete” was the focus. Art is considered to always be rebellious, challenging current issues; from this I wanted to create an artwork that was rebellious. Instead of expanding on this idea, I opened my mind to new concepts to create a better understanding of current issues and how they are expressed.

When analysing the weekly topics, I linked them all to my topic. With Affect and Body Politics, I found the artist Aliaa Magda Elmahdy quite interesting. The artist used her body to confront and shock the viewers. By presenting her body in a certain way, the issue that she is exposing will be remembered by the audience. I decided to experiment in a way that I would alter my body to attempt and comment on issues that I face. When editing images of myself, I found that this method of creating art was fun and had endless opportunities. Although the outcome of my experiment looked ridiculous, it helped me to understand that I have the ability to express myself through this form.

Mai Khoi is a Vietnamese activist singer that sings about rights in relation to her surroundings. The method in which she expresses her opinion on rights is rebellious, where it resulted in her being detained and her concerts shut down. This artist intrigued me to create something that was rebellious. I created a series of images that had their context altered to create new meaning. Upon evaluation, I found that any object of any context can be expressed in a whole new way. Artists are able to use found objects to create different meanings by relating them to dissimilar concepts yet making the artwork work. From my experiment, I found that it was fun and that I am able to think creatively. This gave me inspiration to have more fun when creating works.

Exploring Don Faia’s work ‘Unique Object Group’ 2014, he creates value by adding gold leaf to found objects. I did the same but with found objects in my home. The result of this experiment was that I found that artists are able to rebel by just doing exactly what other artists do, by not being different.

After conducting these various experiments, I evaluated the entirety. I wanted to find what I valued and how I can express what I value in a contemporary and creative way. I evaluated that I wanted to comment on the issue of animal cruelty as this issue is one that I have been exposed to due to the horrific videos shown on social media. As this issue is sensitive, I understood why artists such as Mai Khoi and Aliaa Magda Elmahdy go to such extents to expose the audience with the issues that they face. It is important for artists to create shocking material to impact viewers, therefore I created my artwork to do the same.

My artwork consists of a variety of hanging animals (elephant, giraffe, turtle, penguin and pig). These animals are some of many animals that have been victims of torture by owners, farmers, poachers and fishermen. I hung the animals on shutters with nooses made of twine. The use of nooses relates to the concept of death, where nooses are used for hanging people or trapping animals. By combining the components of animals and nooses, I am able to comment on how animals are constantly victims. By using stuffed animals, it enables the audience to have compassion as the stuffed toys are made to look cute. The art piece aims to confront the audience to realise how common animal cruelty is. When combining the elements of cute animals with death and putting them on display, it will hopefully encourage the audience to appreciate the existence of wildlife.

ADAD1002 Assessment 2 Experiment Reflections + Final Experiment Part 1

From the experiments that I conducted, I had a variety of thoughts:

What is something that I value?

How can I make a comment about what I value?

How can I create an artwork that is contemporary, creative and somehow rebellious?

From these thoughts I found that I value how animals are treated in today's society. I have seen many posts on social media where animals are being mistreated, no matter what age the animal is. I have seen many horrific images of pets being misused, many videos of animals not being treated right when they are able to be slaughtered for the food industry.

Animals are tortured for their meat where they are cramped and hurt due to the certain devices.

I can comment on this issue with objects that I value. I have a variety of stuffed animals (turtle, pig, elephant, penguin, giraffe). For four out of five of these stuffed toys, I have witnessed some sort of cruelty upon the animals that the stuffed toys represent from videos online. I have seen these innocent animals being tortured or killed for others benefit.

A contemporary and very touchy issue is suicide, I related this issue to the misery of animals. I thought, what if animals killed themselves before someone else can do it for them?

Even though it is a very morbid thought, I have heard of a story of my friend's pet chicken. The chicken was bullied and pretty much was a victim of abuse from another chicken, so this particular chicken somehow committed suicide with a rope or string that was in the backyard (was tangled to a clothesline).

Animals do not deserve to be treated in such horrific manners by humans. Animals have suffered and I want to express this idea of suffering by creating something that is confronting and different. Instead of showing the beauty of animals, I can create a rebellious artwork that is dark/sinister in relation to the idea of animal cruelty.

ADAD1002 Assessment 2 Experimentation

Value

Q. Can creative acts be rebellious when rebellion has become canonised in art, design and media histories? What would a contemporary creative rebellion look like?

I wanted to experiment the concept of value in a way where I could create objects that are ‘valuable’ inspired by Don Faia.

I wanted to use something that is not that valuable or taken for granted in today’s society. I would take these objects and paint them gold- giving them a sense of value/worth.

For my first experiment, I chose to use rice as throughout history, consuming white rice meant that you would be superior to others. Pure white rice was saved for special occasions and those in the upper class such as in Asian countries. Today, consuming white rice is common and is taken for granted. I wanted to express the value of white rice by painting it gold. This idea related to the concept of a creative rebellion as I am ultimately giving the cooked white rice, no value and is it no longer consumable.

From this outcome, I decided to press down paper to see how it looked.

I decided to paint tissue next as tissue is taken for granted as well. I also wanted to see how the tissue would react to being painted.

Lastly, I painted a Twisties chip packet. I am “adding value” to something that is cheap and probably just valued as a snack.

It was a bit hard painting this as I had to paint in thick layers in order to cover the colours.

Final outcome:

This set of gold painted objects ended up being quite beautiful. I really loved how the tissue turned out due to the amount of texture and how the colour showed.

From this experiment, I found that my idea of a contemporary creative rebellion relates to how you can think that you are do something so different but you are pretty much doing the same as everyone else. I am rebelling by doing exactly the same as others- I don’t want to be different.

Contemporary Creative Rebellion

Q. Can creative acts be rebellious when rebellion has become canonised in art, design and media histories? What would a contemporary creative rebellion look like?

For this experiment, I wanted to change the context or random objects to give them a new meaning. I took photos of things that I could add a new meaning, purpose, or give it a random new name that has no correlation or somehow relates to the object.

I thought creatively for these names in order to rebel against the true names of the objects. I liked the outcome of this experiment as it was different and quirky.

Assessment 2: Weekly Concept Reflections

When thinking about this concept, I imagined important things or people. I related ‘value’ to my assessment concept of ‘rebellion’ and thought of objects covered in gold. I then searched up artworks that did this and found Don Faia’s ‘Unique Object Group’ where found objects are given value through adding 24k gold leaf to the surface of the object.

Example:

"The finished work alters the perception of what is real and valuable. This found object is now seen, and in this gold state, desired."

This artwork has inspired me to possibly do the same to objects but with other found objects that would be less valuable than shells as shown in Faia’s work. I would use objects that would be thrown away such as trash/scraps and add some sort of value to the object.

Week 5 topic: Affect and body politics

The body is used to rebel. We see things that we don’t usually see in the public. Artists use their body to create questionable works in relation to current issues.

There are many creative ways that artists utilise their body. Whether they are clothed or nude, they have the ability to create an impact through surprising the viewer with a body that is constructed to be different.

Art can be rebellious in reference to its context. A contemporary creative rebellion can challenge the time and context that it is made in. The current events can be criticised to create a rebellion.

Example: Vietnamese pop star Mai Khoi: dissident, high-profile, sings about reform and demanding rights, protests, was detained at Hanoi airport, was harrassed, evicted and had her concerts shut down.
