What are your opinions on varian and quirins relationship?
Varian and Quirin has a unique relationship, and I pretty much enjoy it. Overall, it’s not a perfect relationship, but it is a very realistic relationship… if we aren’t counting Season 3.
In the first season (and best season of the entire show), Varian and Quirin may not share a lot of screen time but we get the type of relationship they have. Quirin is a neglectful parent who keeps too many secrets from Varian. On the other hand, Varian seeks out attention and affection due to the neglect but more times than not it causes more trouble. I’d pin Quirin as the type who isn’t very vocal about his feelings in the first place and the little small amounts of affection is how he shows his feelings. However, Varin is very open about how he feels and would need more of a verbal and reminders on how his dad cares about him due to his low self esteem.
But in the end, we know Quirin truly cares about Varian or else he would have never pushed Varian out of the way of the amber. Quirin wouldn’t choose to search and look for Varian first before checking on everyone in the village in What the Hair. Quirin even lets Varian come along with him to meet the King despite the fact he was going to lie. Quirin has always been concerned and cared about Varian’s well being. He does all these small things that shows how much he cares, but Varian focuses on not only what his dad says but all the negative aspects. From the infamous “Not again, Varian” to the raised voice of Quirin telling him “Enough”. All these negative aspects of Quirin’s actions stick out more in Varian’s mind than the positive ones.
It’s not a perfect relationship and we should never expect characters to have a perfect relationship. Both Quirin and Varian need to work on their respective sides of the relationship to gain a better relationship with each other. If Season Three showed the results of them fixing their relationship, I would of been fine with it. But we don’t get that.
Let me first clarify this scene here I won’t really count as part of the relationship problems of Season 3 as Quirin was just freed from the amber prison. He probably thought he wouldn’t get to see Varian every again, so he probably wanted to first tell Varian that he is proud of him especially since Varian and Quirin last real conversation with each other was the fight about the black rocks. So, it makes sense one of the first things Quirin says to Varian when he is free is that he is proud. I can mostly excuse it.
However, all appearances of Quirin afterwards and non-appearances of Quirin is frustrating.
First off, yes despite I said I mostly excuse the “I’m proud of you” scene, it still feels less rewarding. Varian and Quirin didn’t fix their relationship problems. They were on basically shoved off to the side for more than a year due to the amber. However, Varian needed to work on his relationship with his dad and vise versa. The underlying problems of their relationship still exist. They don’t magically disappear. Nothing was fixed in the end so the fact their relationship is suddenly perfect bugs me.
Second, we don’t get a confirmation that Quirin actually told Varian about anything he was keeping a secret. One of the main conflicts in Season 1 was the fact that multiple characters (Quirin and King Frederic) were keeping secrets that posed harm not only to those around them but the entire kingdom. Their last conversation was about the fact Quirin was purposely keeping secrets about how bad of a state Old Corona was AND his hidden past that was related to the black rocks! Varian deserved an explanation too.
Third, Quirin doesn’t show up in future episodes related to Varian. The biggest one that multiple people have complained about is when Quirin doesn’t make a single appearance in Cassandra’s Revenge when Varian was kidnapped. There is no doubt he should of appeared as that was his son kidnapped and being held hostage! Besides, Quirin is a member of the Brotherhood! He should of done something to get the Moonstone back! (though all of the members should of too...) However, there was another episode Quirin should have appeared in as well: Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?
You maybe questioning why I noted this particular episode since it is focused mostly on Kiera and Catalina’s relationship. This episode takes place in Old Corona which in the process of rebuilding. Even as a minor appearance or even a cameo, we should have seen Quirin making an appearance and an effort to help Old Corona especially since keeping the secret of the Moonstone helped lead to Old Corona’s destruction. Just a minor way of Quirin making amends for his actions. We didn’t need Quirin to necessary speak (in my opinon he should tbh), but the small appearance of Quirin doing something in the background speaks loud enough. Varian also deserved to be there and the two could be helping to rebuild Old Corona together. We can see them working together and helping Old Corona especially since Varian was always so concerned and worried about the wellbeing of his village. They can do a lil non speaking cameo of the two not really agreeing but still helping each other out. Or Varian offering to help Catalina and Kiera out but when asked about his dad, Varian can awkwardly be like “uh he is busy. aNYWAY lemme help you two out” which will help emphasis Varian’s future relationship between the two. Aka there was a lot of ways we could see Quirin and Varian’s relationship grow and evolve especially with the problems stemming back from the first season.
TLDR: Varian and Quirin’s relationship isn’t perfect, but I honestly like how their relationship is in Season 1. It’s not perfect, but we can see where they can fix their relationship in the future. However, Season 3 ruins it (like it does for pretty much everything else in the show).
