“No, no way, Tani.” Juliet said adamantly. She would not accept her paying for anything for their baby. There was no way. “Tani, look at it this way: Insemination aside we would have to pay for all those medical expenses as well, had I gotten pregnant. So we’re paying for them.” Hell, she would even pay her. But that was another story. Juliet got up. She took Tani’s hand.

“Thank you. Thank you for offering this, for doing this… I…I can’t tell you what… what this means to us… to me. After so many… I have no words. Thank you.”

There was really no arguing with her, was there. Even Thomas just lightly shook his head and gave her a wink, which was sign enough for her. Medical expenses it was, but nothing else after that, there was no way she would accept anything else.

“You don’t have to thank me for it. You’re my friend, you both are, and I know how much you two want a baby. If I can help in any way with that, I will, and I’m going to.” She smiled and leaned in to hug her. “You guys are some of our closest friends and pretty much family. Family helps each other.”

“We will obviously pay for the medical expenses.” They would have to for her, too. And for all the tests Juliet had endured to get there…and the follow-ups after their misscarriages. Financially they faced huge expensses, but… they wanted this baby and they would gladly face them, Juliet knew it. It was all for their little one. She felt Thomas nudge her.

“Ju…we might have a baby…” His words hit her where they were supposed to hit her. There was a chance they could be parents, have the little baby part him and part her. Juliet’s eyes filled with tears. She turned into Thomas’s arms and cried into his chest. They might have a real chance at having a baby. 

“We really might have a baby.” Thomas whispered as she cuddled her close, holding her tightly against him. They would get a shot ad having a baby that was their own. Tani really came in as a blessing with her offer.  He knew Juliet would need more time still, and the medical expenses would add to their finance issues they had, but they would manage. It was for their baby, and it was worth it.

Tani just gently shook her head. “You guys don’t have to cover any medical expenses. You have enough on you plate as is. Really, just... Steve and I really want to help you in every way we can.”

Juliet watched Thomas. There was this tiny little spark, something most people would miss. It was hope and maybe a bit of longing. This gave him hope and he wanted that baby. He was willing to entertain the idea and try it. And in that case so was she. A lot of her ideas and decisions about their…want for a baby would be based on him. She wanted him to be happy, to get what he wanted. It was her…that caused him so much pain, so if this caused him hope, she’d go with it.

“If Thomas is in, so am I. But we’d need a proper contract, I… would want to do this right, Tani.” But she’d want to do it. Especially since it caused that little glint in Thomas’s eye.

Tani heaved a soft sigh of relief. She would take that. She was very happily take that and whatever they wanted to do. If it was a contract, her moving into the Nest (if Steve agreed to such an arrangement, too), really anything, as long as they would be happy that they would have a baby of their own, even if Juliet wouldn’t be the one giving birth to it.

She nodded in agreement. “Absolutely. Whatever you guys want, I’m down for it. It’s your baby, after all! I’m just the incubator for the little duckling to hatch.”

This was exactly the type of talk she didn’t want. Again. Juliet sighed, but listened. She couldn’t believe her ears. There was a way? No, there was not. There was no way she could get pregnant and…oh. There was a way. Surrogacy was something she didn’t even think about. Nor could she even think about it right now. It was… fresh and painful and she didn’t know what to do or say, so she looked to Magnum. He was the positive one out of them.

The reaction definitely wasn’t one she expected, but maybe it was still too soon to talk about such options when clearly they were still both grieving. She should have waited with the suggestion, but well, she already laid it out on the table, and if they needed time to think about it, Tani was more than fine with that. 

Thomas looked at Juliet and cuddled her close. It was good news, but he didn’t know if they were ready for that just yet. “It’s worth a shot for sure.” He said, nodding lightly. “Tani didn’t have any complications with Leilani, and... it would mean we can have a baby.”

Tani nodded. “Take all the time you need to decide. Whenever you decide to go for it, I’m here.”

Once they talk Juliet broke down. There was no other way to describe it. Once she was in the comfort of Thomas’s love she broke and let herself hurt and mourn and cry and apologize to him endlessly until mutual declarations of ‘you are the love of my life’ were made and they ended up in each other’s arms, too exhausted to even cry at this point.

She grunted grumpily when Thomas went out to open the door and only sighed halfway contently again when she could nestle back into the safety and comfort of his arms.  And yet she had to…look at Tani. 

“I don’t think we’re up for…good news right now,” Juliet said sadly. 

“But it’s good news! And it’s good news for you guys. At least I hope so, if you accept and all.” She smiled brightly. Tani really hoped that they would at hear her out and let her say what she had to say, because really neither of them looked all that excited or happy to see her.

“I talked to Steve about what happened. I didn’t say exactly what happened because that’s not my place to tell, but he knows vaguely what’s going on. I know I shouldn’t have done it either, but he had to know because I had an idea. When I told you about you guys still having options, you immediately said adoption, but adoption isn’t the only way you two can have a baby.” She really hoped that by now they got the picture.

“If you two want to go with that option, I would happily be a surrogate for you.”

“I know, adoption but…I really wanted a baby that was…his, carried his genes on.” Him and her actually, but she couldn’t have that now. Their little ones didn’t survive and to try and get pregnant again, well wouldn’t that just be cruel to them and the child they conceived knowing it faced impossible odds of survival? She sighed. She was right about one thing, though. Thomas mourned, too. He was here, surrounded by their ohana’s babies while he also mourned having the chance of being a father himself.

She sighed. “I’ll… Thank you for listening. I’ll… I think I need to go to my husband.” She gave her a little smile and then walked away, towards her husband. She slipped her hand into his and stood close to him.

“Let’s go home…”

Adoption was definitely one option, but not the only one. Still, Tani didn’t want to say anything just yet, and gave Juliet a soft smile. “It’s no problem. And if you need anybody to talk to, I’m a phone call away.” She would be there for them, and knew Steve would be too. They would offer them their support in every way possible, and it really meant in every way.

It wasn’t until several days later that Tani stopped her car in front of the gates to the Nest. After the party, she told Steve in confidence about the situation the Magnums were in, and they discussed the possibility that Tani would be a surrogate for them so they could have a baby of their own. Steve happily agreed with that, since Tani had no complications during per pregnancy with Leilani and it would ensure the Magnums had their own baby after all. So she was at the Nest, assuming both were there since nobody saw them after the party, and pushed the buzzer.

Thomas was the one who answered and buzzed her right through before going back to Juliet to cuddle with her. “It’s Tani.” He told her.

And sure enough, Tani let herself in and came to them with a bright smile. “Hey, you guys! I really hope I’m not bothering you, buuuuut... I might have some really good news, or well, suggestion for you.”

Juliet only lightl hugged Tani back. She didn’t pretend to have any enthusiasm when she didn’t. Tani knew why now, she’d understand her lack of response wasn’t about her as a person, but about Juliet’s very own problems. And she faced a lot of them right now. She feared losing her husband over it.

“We’re not dealing. I slept in a guest room. I…couldn’t face his disappointment. I…he wants a baby. And I’m the reason his babies died….” Their babies. He’d hate her. If not now then eventually, when their friends had more babies and they were still childless, surely he would start to resent her for it. 

“I can’t face him, Tani. I can’t look at his sad puppy eyes.”

“You do know we’re talking about Thomas, right? He’s been head over heels for you for years. I’m convinced you’re literally the love of his life.” It was very pure love, she could tell from how Thomas looked at Juliet all the time, and vice versa, too, when Juliet thought nobody was watching. They were sweet together, and if there was something she knew, it was that Thomas would stick with Juliet no matter how things were hard for both of them.

“He knows you better than anybody else, Juliet. He knows when you need time to process things, and space to do so. I know I’m the opposite and maybe even pushed you into talking about this when you didn’t want to talk about it, and I’m sorry if that’s the case.” But that was who she was, even if that wasn’t any excuse.

She gently rubbed Juliet’s shoulder. “He’s grieving, too, but I doubt he will hold it against you. He’s not that type of guy. We’re not in the medieval times anymore, and there’s ways for you guys to still have a baby.” And exactly that gave her an idea which she would have to thoroughly talk to Steve about.

“Oh I know that… Truth is, I am avoiding the baby and Thomas.” Tani and everyone knew of her first miscarriage. The second was secret, third was unavoidable as everyone was around when it started and so on. Their friends knew they were trying and having trouble with it. Not with conceiving, they did manage to get pregnant, but…well with the rest. Juliet turned and motioned for Tani to follow her away from the crowd. As much as Tani implied she wanted her to decide wether she wanted to talk about it, Juliet knew there would be a little…glaring involved. And continous prodding, so she might as well come clean.

Once away from the sight of everyone else she faced her again. “Thomas and I had… tests done on us, to find out what caused the miscarriages. Turns out… that it was me. More specifically my womb. Due to previous abdominal injuries I can’t…I can’t carry a pregnancy to term…” And she feared Thomas would start resenting her over this and leave.  “We found out the day Noelani gave birth…”

Avoiding the baby was something Tani could understand, especially since Juliet and Thomas went through two miscarriages, at least that Tani knew of, but getting away from Thomas was new. There had to be something more to it and yes, she was curious and perhaps even nosy, but she also hated seeing Juliet look this lost in the crowd of friends who all loved and supported her. Maybe Juliet was even unwilling to talk about it, but Tani took it as a token of trust when she motioned for her to follow her and she did so, listening to her as she talked and getting sadder and sadder.

It wasn’t the news Tani expected, and for somebody who liked to talk a lot and let herself be heard, she was very quiet. She knew how much Juliet and Thomas tried for a baby and wanted to have one, and now it turned out she couldn’t carry a baby to term. Tani teared up a bit and leaned in to hug her again. “I’m so sorry... I can’t even imagine what you’re going through right now.” And Noelani having the baby probably felt like rubbing salt into the wound. “How are you guys handling it? You know Steve and I will be there for you, right?”

He can’t help it when he smells a good case. Thomas just likes to help people and it had been a busy few months. Case after case have left him swamped and he can never turn down a terrified voice asking for help when no one else could. At least Tani understood. Most people Thomas is friends with who don’t know him too well tend to assume he just forgot about them. Which he’d never do.

“If I did, I think T.C. would disown me as a brother.” Kamekona is a great cook but his business has begun to try and poach people from T.C. which was causing stress on the pilot. “Oh, totally. I haven’t been meaning to blow you off so often but the life of a PI often goes to the extreme of busy and then dead. I bet Five-0 has the same kinda thing.”

“Oh right, competition and all that. family above anything else, and that’s honestly a very valid reason.” She remembered TC saying something about Kamekona at times not playing the cleanest game when it came to the chopper tour business, and it was understandable that Thomas would rather support his friend than pitch in with the competition.

She gave him a smile, nodding as she started eating. Thankfully it was her day off, she specially took it to spend some quality time with Thomas and catch up, and Tani really wanted to make most of it, unless she would be called in, which she hoped wouldn’t happen, or Thomas get a call from a client, which, of course, could happen. “Oh don’t even get me started. I don’t even remember when the last time was I even slept properly. With Steve off the island, it’s like all the criminals came crawling out from their rocks. What about you, besides having your hands full and then nothing? Is Juliet keeping you out of trouble?”

This was unexpected and awkward. Juliet was not in the mood for this. She was in the mood for chocolate, a blanket and ignoring the entire world. But she couldn’t. There was this new baby in the ohana that needed welcoming…and it would never be her baby. It instantly tore at her heart again, caused her as much pain as just looking at Noelani’s newborn did. At least when Leilani was born the pain over losing her baby at the time was gone again…and perhaps another pregnancy, one she never told anyone but Thomas about, made it easier, too…at least at the time. 

“I am right here just…keeping busy and all. You know, I can’t help trying to be a perfect host and Noelani has enough on her plate with the little one…”

There she was, the Juliet she knew, wanting to keep busy and make sure everything was perfect for Noelani and the baby’s welcome home party, but she didn’t have to do it on her own, and it wasn’t a party that strictly needed a host. They were all just friends who got together to celebrate, nothing more or less, plus she didn’t look or sound all that well, but rather... moody, gloomy almost.

“You know that we all here are friends, right? And we all help each other with the food and drinks and everything else. You don’t need to be the host here, Juliet. It’s a welcome home party, not a fancy gathering.” She offered her a warm smile and wrapped her arm around her shoulders, slowly starting to navigate her away from the others. “Do you want to talk about it? And before you say anything, don’t think I didn’t notice the long face.”

The welcoming party for Noelani and her baby was just amazing. It was colourful, with an incredibly happy atmosphere, lots of balloons, ribbons, food and drinks and everybody was cheerful. Well, almost everybody. It wasn’t hard to notice that Thomas and Juliet weren’t exactly all that for partying. Tani knew only partially why, and it was because of the miscarriages Juliet had. She was even pregnant at the same time as Tani, when she was pregnant with Leilani, but things didn’t play out all that well for the other couple. 

Tani intended to at least try and talk to Juliet, since Thomas did mingle with the guys while she seemingly kept to herself.

With Leilani in the arms of her uncle Danny, whose ears she really wanted to babble off, Tani went to look for her friend, and sure enough, it was Juliet who walked into her and made things all the easier for her. Tani grinned and hugged her close. “Hey, you. I was actually looking for you!”

Juliet felt rotten. She didn’t want to be here, but she had to. Noelani had just given birth to a baby girl, the day she had gotten horrible news that not only darkened her mood, but also Thomas’s. They learned they couldn’t have a baby together. They tried so long, so often, suffered multiple misscarriages, which prompted them to go all the way.

Neither had even remotely recovered from the news when they found out the baby was born and then invited to welcoming them home. Juliet mainly avoided contact with anyone while Thomas mainly mingled with the guys. Both tried to avoid the baby, the wound being still too fresh. Juliet actually also tried to avoid Thomas at all costs.

In her hurry to avoid Thomas, she accidentally bumped into Tani. “Oh…sorry. I didn’t… look, obviously.”

It’s really been ages since Tani last saw Thomas. With Juliet it was different, they easily became good friends and spent time together every once in a while. But Thomas... it was like he was swallowed by the Earth never to be seen again, which was why she was really happy when she finally managed to get a hold of him to catch up with him. She gave him a bright smile as he brought over the shrimp baskets.

“Thanks! Honestly, if you really want to know what good shrimp is, you have to try shrimp tacos Kamekona makes. Don’t give me a weird look, it’s much better than it sounds.” She chuckled. “But what you can do to help me is sit down and talk! It’s been ages since we last saw each other and I think there’s some proper catching up we need to do.”

“Mahalo.” He grins as he takes the two shrimp baskets over to their table. “Gotta admit, this is the best shrimp I’ve ever had. And I’m not just saying it cause Kamekona can hear me.” It’s nice to let loose once in a while and enjoy his time not on a case. While he finds it a little hard he knows if he works himself to the bone he won’t be able to help someone with all of his abilities. “So, what can I do to help? You know I got your back, Tani.”

By all Tani could tell, things couldn’t get worse. The guy they were trying to get out was nowhere to be seen, Steve, as per usual, went inside on his own first, and things escalated from there on. The commotion inside was a telltale sign enough for the rest of the team to storm the place and help in every way possible and be the backup Steve needed. Lou, Junior and Quinn were one group and they circled around the back, while Tani was with Danny and Adam, and they went in from the front.

It didn’t take them too long to track down Steve, moving through bad guy after bad guy, and once there, the look on Danny’s face and Steve’s condition alone were enough for her to know that shit hit the fan. Tani never saw Steve like this. From how Danny looked, she assumed he did. She knew what it was, at least assumed she knew what it was, because her dad went through the same, though never this badly. And Steve seemed zoned out completely, on top of being injured, which meant that any sudden movement could cause aggression.

“Steve? Steve, it’s Tani. Danny’s here with me, Adam too.” She started gently. “We’ll help you get out of here and patch you up, okay?”

Steve gasped as the knife landed in his stomach. The pain errupted in him, familiar in a sense. And something else: Fear. Panic. Steve stumbled to the side. He fumbled for the knife still inside him as he stumbled onto the next room. The smell of smoke hit his nose, smoke and water. He saw sparks reflect in water, saw a chair in the middle of the room where they had held their captive before, electrocuted him, too, maybe. 

Steve groaned . Behind him gunfire echoed, but he didn’t even flinch anymore. He couldn’t. His heart beat so fast, it was painful. His mind supplied him only with memories, one more painful and scary than the other. He fell to his knees with another gasp, stared at the water in front of him, that slowly turned red…
