Researchers at The Scripps Research Institute have found that the strains spreading so quickly in Europe and the U.S. have a mutated S “spike” protein that makes it about 10 times more infectious than the strain that originally was identified in Asia. The research was published online on bioRxiv and has yet to be peer-reviewed. The mutation does not appear to make the virus any more deadly than it already is, but it does appear to make it significantly more contagious. We are in a World War. The COVID-19 crisis drags on and it’s hard not to draw the parallels of being in a World War. America’s death toll is over 130,000 dead and growing. This is more than the combined American death toll of the first Gulf War, the Second Gulf War, Afghanistan, Vietnam, and The Korean War combined. Like virtually all wars at the outset it was thought to be over in a few months yet it drags on. Like many wars it has blown up normal economics and will result in vast debt. Medical personnel are the front line soldiers and they are in combat every day and at risk of death. This is the first major war we have fought on American soil since The Civil War. Like many wars it is changing the way the country operates. Some old industries are dying, existing ones are evolving and new ones are being created. Much of this change is permanent . Internal lifestyles are affected. Millennials, once ingrained in city life are starting to migrate to the suburbs in search of bigger safer homes. Baby boomers are also looking for larger homes as the time spent in them increases. Our levels of fear and isolation have increased, many have lost contact with our fellow humans, alone in our homes and unable to smile at strangers from behind our masks on the rare occasions in which we leave them. Our economy has CANCER As is readily apparent we are in a two pronged crisis, The COVID-19 crisis and the resulting economic crisis. If you set the medical crisis aside for a moment and focus only on the economic events there are some worrisome trends. Think of the economy as a person, necessary mitigation measures have given the economy cancer. Stage one cancer can be treated but we are now progressing to stage two. This also can be treated but is more difficult. The longer the crisis continues the more difficult it is to successfully treat the patient. We still have time and there is a great deal of hope. The good news is the economy has shown a desire to rebound. Damage has definitely been done but at this point it is still treatable using existing and evolving fiscal and monetary measures. However the longer the economy is suppressed, the farther the cancer grows, the more difficult the task and waiting too long results in stage four.
