An inconvenient truth (long read) The other day I reached out on my socials asking if anyone is in the business of artist management. More to the point, if anyone would be interested in managing me as an artist. Well here is the inconvenient truth. No one wants to manage a bipolar diagnosed and sectioned or institutionalised musician unless that very condition happens to sell records and their brand. Very few people on this planet can stomach the wrath and maniacal behaviour that most often comes with an unmedicated bipolar 1 person. (I am and have been medicated for 10 years) Really, only your closest family and friends would endure that and still love you. Sometimes and most times a long the way, even those closest to you distance themselves or completely eject from your life. Sometimes, I’ll do the ghosting to save them the trouble or burden of my unpredictable existence. I found a Heat Magazine article where they interview someone from “Jozi Fest” one of the last shows I played before being hospitalized where the event organiser said: “Miss Baxter had no right to behave in such a “Disgusting” manner.” This led to the organisers not paying my band for our performance. So two things I wanted to highlight here. 1. I had no control over my behaviour, I was in the thick of a full blown undiagnosed manic psychosis. This was not just a “meltdown” this was a full manic episode which most people including me could not recognise at the time. But no one cares about being “on the mend” stories or forgiveness, and consideration. Only sensationalised bullshit journalism. 2. The very action they took to “punish” me for my unsolicited shitstorm by not paying me and my band, is the very thing that triggered my condition. Stress, trauma, survival. At that time, when signed to EMI, who too dropped me supposedly because of a “lack of sales” despite having numerous No. 1 charting singles, winning 2 South African Music Awards and People magazine’s choice Award, had in fact dropped me and co-writer because I was too much to deal with.
