Summary: Fabiola finally gets in touch with her mother through a spiritual source. She finds out she’s doing alright back in Haiti but her life just as she thought isn’t progressing. It hurts Fabiola to see her own mother put in that position. Which brings her a sort of guilt that maybe it should’ve just been her to be the one left behind. But she knows she just has to keep on fighting and continuing on her route to get her back to where she truly belongs, with the rest of her family and in Fabiola’s arms. Fabiola’s relationship with her boyfriend also gets steamy when she finds out he got in trouble with the law for carrying illegal weapons in his car for his infamous friend, Premadonnas boyfriend, Dre. Fabiola is brought to many emotions, one being hate for Dre and his horrible influences on her lover and sadness knowing he’s going to be gone for a while. This also brings immense tension between Fabiola and
Premadonna because not only will she now have to fight to wait on her mother but now her boyfriend as well.
Critical Analysis: In chapter 18 it says, “His heart is like a moon that’s a never ending glow, which is what I need in a time like this.” (pg. 196). This quote is an example of a simile which gives a great significance to the text, because here Fabiola is reminiscing on her love for Kaseem, her boyfriend. It shows that he’s really made a positive mark in her life and now that he’s gone and locked up, it gives Fabiola an even bigger push to get her mother out of her country and to where she truly belongs, with her.
Still going into the chapter there’s another quote that says “Wow, because i’ll look so pretty in it..huh Donna? (pg. 235). Here Fabiola can be seen using a form of sarcasm, which adds a good spice to the context being shown. Since not only is she mad at Premadonna for still having relations with Dre, but him also being the main reason why Kaseem is locked up right now and her not getting it at all.
Personal Response: I think this part of the book is actually where everything is getting pretty interesting, considering the fact that you can actually feel the tension between Fabiola and Premadonna. So as the reader I know Fabiola is going to take the bad situation she’s in right now and turn it into the true motivation she needed to go out and find her mother.

Summary: After getting used to her new surroundings and everybody in it, somebody new comes along. A boy who she meets at a club, they instantly click besides their differences. Even though her sisters don’t really approve of him Fabiola sees past that and enjoys his company no matter what. Fabiola also runs into a new way of finding out where her mother is, which is through a detective. But she also has to give something in return in order to get that information...her current “lovers” drug information. It’s a tough choice she has to make. Get her boyfriend's drug situation caught up or leave her mother behind? Fabiola has a tough time deciding on this, so she does many prayers and rituals to help her throughout this tough time in her life. Hoping that her spirit ancestors can give guide her to the right path.
Critical Analysis:  In Chapter 14 Fabiola says “Q” is all I say. Then I want to take it back.”
(pg. 153) this quote is an example of conversational element because it features short sentences in one sentence. This is also very important in this part of the novel because Fabiola is caught up in a situation with her sisters, that’s almost a make it or break it situation. Then also in chapter 14, Donna says “Come on Fab! Step up your hair game. You gotta actually look fabulous,” Donna says, standing in front of me with one of her wigs.” (pg. 134”). This is an example of humor because Premodanna is so caught up in beauty and fashion while Fabiola is a more laid back natural chill girl, it gives the novel a better interest to it and shows the fun side to Fabiola when it comes to her jumping out of her comfort zone.
Personal Response: This portion of the book was pretty interesting and fun to read because not only does it get into Fabiola’s boyfriend and her spending time with him, but it also goes into the details of her mother and the struggle she has trying to find her. Hopefully, she gets closer in the path and mystery of finding her.
