ohhh they're so fucked up. ohhh they're so fucked uppp and you can do so many things with them. the dynamic changes a lot depending on if there's sdvn or if theres like... shadowsapphire in the picture. their dynamic also changes a lot depending on what/where you think candy apple actually came from too. i think really the only thing that encompasses all the different flavors of them is just... found family. there's no one succinct way to define them.
black sapphire antagonizes the hell out of her for his own amusement, but he'd also kill for her or stand in front of her to take a hit meant for her. he thinks she's a brat and (canonically, iirc) only ever drops his professional, formal tone around her, which speaks to me as him being very comfortable around her and possibly only around her. if asked, he'll say serving shadow milk is what's most important to him, but if he was forced to make a choice, he'd ultimately pick candy apple over shadow milk (not that it would be an easy decision for him).
meanwhile, candy apple says she hates him, but she also knows he's probably the only person in the world she can reliably go to if she's having a real problem with anything that she can't deal with on her own. he's who she turns to if she actually needs help - as much as she idolizes shadow milk, i think she inherently trusts black sapphire more to take her seriously when she needs it most. (not that smilk wouldn't take her seriously, but he definitely wouldn't be honest with his own feelings about it right away, where black sapphire has already shown he'll drop his professional act around her and be open around her, even if it is just to get on her nerves).
do not separate, basically. strange fucked up found family. they're a package deal. i love them.
