About the Pench National Park

Pench National Park is one of the most popular national parks in India. Located in the Seoni and Chhindwara districts of Madhya Pradesh, this park derives its name from the Pench River flowing through the park. As a result of the river, the pench nagpur park is divided into two equal halves; each falling into the Seoni and Chhindwara districts respectively.

In the year 1977, Pench National Park was declared as a sanctuary. However, in 1983, it was given the status of being a national park. Again, in the year 1992, the Pench National Park was established as a pench tiger reserve. Famous for rafting, this park also won the “Best Management Award” in the year 2011. Accessible from Pauni on National Highway 7, the park has two popular entry gates, Turiya gate pench and Karmajhiri. 

Wildlife

The Pench National Park is covered with small hills and teak forest in the southern side of the Satpura Ranges. The temperature varies from 4 °C or 39 °F in the month of December to 42 °C or 108 °F in the month of May. The forest cover in the park area includes teak mixed with other species like saja, lendia, dhaora, salai, haldu and amaltas. The flowers of the mahua tree are eaten by mammals and birds. The same flowers are also harvested by the tribal people as food and to brew beer.

In terms of fauna, the Bengal tiger is the main cat species of the park. The most commonly seen wildlife is chital, sambar, nilgai and jackal. Along with these, fox, striped hyena, gaur, four-horned antelope and barking deer can be seen as well.

The park consists of more than 210 species of birds. Some of them are peafowl, junglefowl, crow pheasant, crimson-breasted barbet, red-vented bulbul, racket-tailed drongo, Indian roller, magpie robin, lesser whistling teal, pintail, shoveller, egret and herons, minivet, oriole, wagtail, munia, myna, waterfowl and blue kingfisher.

 Point of Interest

The Pench National Park has quite a popular association with the famous writer Rudyard Kipling. His world famous “The Jungle Book” is all based on the jungles of this same park. Moreover, there was a local lore about a bog named “Mowgli”, brought up by wolves and later found near the Sant Bawadi village. That’s not all. You can also find the Ben Ganga River valley where the protagonist of the novel, Sher Khan, met his demise.
