Art Final
Here is my work in progress.

And the final piece.
Tumblr media
I have had so much fun in this class this semester, and although I am not a spectacular artist, I have a much better understanding of the work and methods of art that go into making something beautiful.
I decided to paint the mountains because I have a longing to explore more than just the places I call home.

Virtual Sketchbook 4
Jackson Pollock’s art is very well summed up by his quote from 1950, “Today painters do not have to go to a subject matter outside of themselves. They work from a different source. They work from within.” Pollock made the transition from studying with Thomas Hart Benton and using abstract imagery, to using no imagery in his drip paintings, because he wanted to look deeper than that genre, and more into his own thought process. I believe during WWII, along with the country, Pollock wanted to define his own terms and his own meaning of art and how it is portrayed; freedom was a huge part of this. Pollock's abstract/non-representational art is an example of a transition in the world and a growth of expression. Pollock wanted to go his own way and find his own method of expression, and by doing that he broke free from Thomas Hart Benton’s studying and learned to enjoy art with no imagery. Pollock experienced some who enjoyed and disliked his work, but so did Benton, there is no right and wrong way to express and make art, Pollock just had his own way of doing so and his expression of freedom led him to break away from studying with Benton

Jan Frans van den Hecke, The Triumph of Faith (1660-1695)
DESCRIBE PHYSICAL QUALITIES (THE FACTS)
This piece of art is an extremely large woven tapestry (unable to find dimensions), currently on display in the Ringling Museum of art. This tapestry contains earthy tones of their outfits and angelic-like whites and golds. The woman in the center of the tapestry represents faith, this tapestry is meant to show the triumph of faith over science, philosophy, and nature. Tapestries are made by weaving threads over and under each other, and then squishing them tight together. This tapestry holds some balance to it, but it is not perfectly symmetrical. The symbol of faith in the center, and each side containing people adds the effects of balance. The woman in the center of the tapestry is emphasized to draw attention to faith triumphing among science, philosophy, and nature. The contrast in this piece would be the representation of faith, she is dressed very light and holds the appearance of an angel, while everyone else wears darker colors.
PERSONAL FEELINGS
I have mixed emotions about this piece of art. I think it is beautiful and I respect the work that was put into it, but I’d like to see more of an equal type of approach to religion, science, philosophy, and nature. I know though that for this time period that ideal is a bit far fetched. I personally believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion and one belief should not be put down because the other belief is “better.”
RESEARCH
This piece of art shows movement and religious values. This piece is from the Baroque movement which was from about 1600-1750. The tapestry says to be that Jan Frans van den Hecke was a religious man and believed in faith over science. The tapestry itself is saying that faith rules over science, philosophy, and nature. This is clearly depicted in this piece because of the angel leading the way in the center of the tapestry.
I chose this piece because it is a tapestry and I know how much work goes into making tapestries, especially of the size of this piece in particular. This piece is important to society and the world because it shows the importance and the way religion is held in some people’s eyes. For this time period without technology, making a tapestry this large that conveys a message this strong is a huge aspect of the importance of religion for this time period.

Virtual Sketchbook 2
JOURNALING  – Make a visual outline of all the Principles of Design (Chapter 4) and define each one, interpreting the text’s definition of each one in your own words, so you fully understand it. Identify where you see examples of these principles in your everyday life or identify how an artist uses each element and principle by posting an example of an art form or drawing an example that uses that Principle next to the definition. (7 examples TOTAL)
unity and variety
Tumblr media
Allan McCollum
This piece of art describes unity and variety to me because of its consistency and it's also diverse pieces. This is one whole piece of art, but its collective pieces and different shapes add to the variety.
balance
Tumblr media
Jan Van Eyck
Balance in this art piece is depicted by equality and symmetry on both sides of the scene. The people on both sides are gathered with the people in the front bowing. There are an equal amount of people praying around the table with a centerpiece of a lamb to truly create a sense of balance.
emphasis and subordination
Tumblr media
Winslow Homer
Emphasis is drawn towards the woman because of the stark difference between her blue gown and the muted colors in the background. Subordination would be the lack of attention meant for the background of the painting.
directional forces
Tumblr media
Vincent van Gogh
I consider this piece of art to have a directional force because of the texture and flow of the sky. The night sky offers a winding path for your eyes to follow and wander on.
repetition and rhythm
Tumblr media
Rene Magritte
Repetition and rhythm in the floating men is a noticeable aspect in this piece of art. The men are not irregularly placed, they have a rhythm but a noticeable variation to their placement. The repetition would be the cloning of the floating men all around the piece.
scale and proportion
Tumblr media
Clemens Wirth
The size and proportion of the hand to the people is made to look as though the real person is a giant in this photo. Thanks to the miniatures of real people and the camera angle of the person's hand, the photographer is able to capture something that makes the viewer view the relationship differently.
WRITING AND LOOKING – Just as a good cook assembles the perfect ingredients for a delicious recipe, an artist assembles the right elements for a successful artwork. Choose any artwork from your textbook and make a recipe of the composition. For example, Velásquez’s artwork, Las Meninas (figure 17.21, page 295) contains implied lines, linear perspective, a distinct vanishing point, neutral colors, highlights, focal points described by geometric shapes (triangles and rectangles) and achieves balance through placement of figures and rhythm between foreground and background etc. Make sure to include the title of your choice with the figure and page number. Don’t use my example.
Tumblr media
Sassetta, The Meeting of Saint Anthony and Saint Paul
Fig. 3.27
3.5 Time and Motion
Sassetta’s painting contains directional forces, movement in time, muted colors, and emphasis and subordination.
CONNECTING ART TO YOUR WORLD – Share a personal experience of how color has affected you (one paragraph). Make sure to use some of your new vocabulary (hue, value, intensity, saturation). If you had to pick a “color scheme” for your life, what would it be?
A color scheme for my life would be muted hues of orange, burgundy, green, grey, black, and other colors in that spectrum. I do not like the saturation and of bright and intense colors. Muted tones make me feel calm and natural, and wearing them makes me feel more confident. Having a pop of color can make me feel strange if it isn't in a muted tone, it seems to be too much for my eyes to handle at times.
ART PROJECT – ARTIST’S CHOICE - Draw a cartoon or make a painting. The form: If you choose the cartoon (comic) it must be at least 3 panels. The size is not important. The painting can be executed with any of the materials (media) outlined in your textbook (see Chapters 6 and 7) and note that painting involves the use of WET media, drawing usually refers to dry media – I want to see PAINTING if you choose to make a painting, DRAWING is NOT the same thing). The content: The subject matter should be something that you are passionate about – something that has a deep personal meaning for you. The comic or the painting should be able to tell some type of story that relates your feelings about your chosen subject matter. Post pics of the finished product (in-process photos are also interesting!).
Tumblr media
I created this painting with the idea in mind of who I have become vs. who I was. My style and colors I associate myself with have changed so much in the past few years and I have never been happier with the person I am becoming.
PHOTO/DESIGN - Using magazines or the internet, each person needs to find two solid examples of photojournalism. Paste your examples in your Tumblr sketchbook and clearly label them – Photojournalism. Also in your sketchbook, please answer the following questions about your favorite of the two examples: What is the event being depicted? How does the photograph visually represent the story to the reader/viewer? (4 sentences total)
Franz Krieger
Group 5
Tumblr media
This photo depicts two soldiers on the Eastern Front. These images are used to show people WWII from a german photographers perspective. This image shows an inside look at soldiers to the public. The event being depicted shows how soldiers would present themselves, and their serious but almost afraid facial expressions.
Tumblr media
This image shows prisoners in WWII, it shows their neglected appearance and the effects of WWII on these people. Franz helped to release photos of the effects and reality of WWII. Without these images, we would have fewer sources of the depth to WWII.

Virtual Sketchbook: 1
1. WRITING AND RESEARCH –
THIS part of the assignment is a class discussion – deadline August 23 11:59pm.
Discussion: Introductions/First Artworks
Related materials: First Clues-art work list .doc, introduction art works.ppt
2. ART AND WRITING - Select a work of art from your life. It must be something that hangs in your house or your room, something that is important to you or that you look at everyday. Include a picture. In paragraph form (4 sentences), tell me about the art – what media were used to create it? What use does it serve? Do you think it is beautiful? Why?
Tumblr media
Sophia Baughan is a tattoo artist from Australia. I have been following her and her work for years. Her tattoos always feature beautiful muted colors and nature-related artwork. Her tattoos allow people to express themselves without saying a single word, they provide more beauty to people through her art and expression. I love to see her artwork pop up on my Instagram feed every day, each piece is beautiful and has its own story.
3. WRITING A SELF-PORTRAIT - Create a perceptual profile. What “baggage” are you bringing along when you look at art? Answer the following questions – How old are you? What is the gender you primarily align with? Where are you from? What is your ethnicity? What do you do for fun? Are you a member of any organized group? Where do you work? What makes you uniquely you? This helps us see from what exact point in the world we view and receive visual information.
I am a nineteen-year-old white female from Florida. For fun, I like to listen to live music, play my own music, and go for drives. I am part of a community car club in Bradenton that my partner runs. I currently am not an employee anywhere but I am a student in college. My personality and style is a huge factor in what makes me uniquely me.
4. ART PROJECT (SELF-PORTRAIT) – Look at the work of Romare Bearden in your textbook (pg. 5-6, figs. 1.3-1.5). He created collages that combine media (gouache, pencil, colored pencil) and photographs to express things from his life that he thought people could universally relate to. He was representing himself powerfully long before the advent of selfies.
What are you fascinated by in your daily life? Create a self-portrait that somehow represents YOU. This could be a selfie (remember this is ART - your representation should encompass the definition as introduced in our text, and this is a graded assignment), a virtual collage, anything you assemble that communicates something to the viewer. But don’t let me (or anyone else) limit you – be as creative as you desire!
In my daily life, I am fascinated by the community and older values that bring people together. I believe this photograph represents me not only because of the colors and tone of the photograph but also because it holds fun and edge within it as well. This photo represents my music taste, my style, and my own personal aesthetic.

5 learned facts:
1. Pablo Picasso's painting, Guernica was a bit of a mystery. Picasso refused to talk about the symbolism behind the artwork. Picasso only said that he "paints objects for what they are."
2. Guernica was painted after the 1937 German bombing of Guernica, Spain.
3. Guernica is a large painting, at 11 feet tall and 25.6 feet wide.
4.  Picasso made his first painting at nine years old, in the year 1890.
5. Nazis would not allow Picasso's paintings to be displayed in Germany.
After doing some light research on the artwork, it has become less abstract. Knowing the painting was done after a bombing makes me believe it contains some depiction of the bombing. Picasso refused to identify the meaning of the painting, probably because it might've sparked some controversy since it was made after Guernica was bombed. At first glance, Guernica looks like a strange piece of artwork, but it could hold more meaning than I originally thought.
