Okay y’all KNOW I’m a horror fiend and very desensitized to it because I watch so much, but I’m about to share with you the three that fucked me up the most
Incantation (2022) scared the everliving shit out of me. I had to pause it. Never seen anything like it and the final reveal of the alter was just. I can’t describe it. The slow burn sense of dread and terror changed me and I’m different now
When Evil Lurks (2023) I watched with my friend and I thought I would be okay since I don’t usually feel scared if I have someone with me. After this one, it didn’t even help. I was scared to move from the couch
Hereditary (2018) everyone has seen but I’m including it anyway. I love horror as a metaphor for trauma (that is LITERALLY the premise of my novel) and this manages to be excellent in both horror and tragedy. It gets so scary at the end my ex and I had to pause it

#i feel this is particularly common in horror#so many movies are campy on purpose so it doesn't feel genuine#that or desperately afraid of being campy and comes off as pretentious#everybody's too scared of having a final girl these days

horror book rec: The Garden by Clare Beams
i listened to this audiobook in one sitting at work and oh my god, was it good. if you like The School for Good Mothers, you'll like this. i wouldn't call it scary per se, but definitely disturbing. it's a great statement on how the medical field treats women like baby factories, too. and that cover!! it's one of the best covers i've seen in a long time. i highly recommend this book, but trigger warning for pregnancy and miscarriage.
