Anyways, I talk enough about Scott's problems- his trauma, compulsions, and self destructive behavior- but it's also worth talking about the other side of things.

Scott is someone who crafts his own joy out of the worst situations, who sews a silver lining into the threads of fate, who pictures fields of flowers every time he closes his eyes, and who has only ever wanted safety and happiness for himself and his friends.

This isn't always 'good' for him. I've talked at great lengths about how Scott's 'selflessness' takes the form of repression and his his 'optimism' shows skewed priorities and often covers up harmful compulsive behavior.

But none of this erases the underlying beauty and warmth of Scott's worldview and personality either. The world needs people who care, people who don't give up on others, people who care about being good even in the bleakest circumstances.

And Scott is a good person who makes other people's lives better. He's fun, and generous, and bold, he makes people feel special because they are special to him, and he always finds some reason things will work out, some excuse to laugh about something, some path to drag himself through the brambles surrounding him and drag his friends with him (he won't let them go), even when things seem hopeless or pointless.

(with very few exceptions- though even when he gives in to hopelessness to some extent in his series', it's never really permanent, there's always a light at the end of the tunnel, even if a warped one. in both third life and- if we're looking at other series besides the life series- empires season one he got his 'happy endings' in death, because nothing's ever lost forever within scott's narratives, and in witchcraft smp he didn't even have to die to find that light, he, even at his worst, most bleak and hopeless, clawed his way into reigniting that light and love and hope in his life, and it worked)

Scott's designation of embodying the stars isn't unearned- a bright hopeful guiding light that even millions of miles of distance and the inky black of the universe can't choke out, reminding you that there's a way back to shore.

I wish Scott would be kinder to himself. I wish Scott would let himself have 'selfish' desires. I wish Scott didn't dehumanize himself. But I don't want my discussion of these aspects of him to dull or confuse the parts of him that are genuinely admirable and indispensably good.
