Zine Interest Check: Week 1 of 3

It's been a week since our Thunderbolt Fantasy 10th anniversary fanzine's interest check went live!

As of now, excluding doubles, we've gotten 79 responses worldwide, with 58 interested in contributing!

We got some questions in Japanese and Mandarin about the Thunderbolt Fantasy 10th anniversary fanzine we're planning!

Earlier, we answered the questions on Plurk, Bluesky, and Twitter. We are truly grateful for the fact that there is interest in our zine (and even some potential contributors!) beyond the Anglophone corner of this fandom.

The questions are not as relevant to Anglophone fans, but here's part of the answer that might be of interest:

In addition to taking pre-orders online, we are planning to sell copies in person as well: at a budaixi-only doujinshi event in Tokyo called Raimei ni Tsuzuke! (This is mentioned in our interest check and Carrd FAQ, but just in case you missed it...)

Next year's iteration of this event will be on May 17, 2026. As we have a Japanese-speaking mod on our team, we will apply for a table as soon as applications open.

It's a really fun event with lots of cool fanmade creations for budaixi shows/troupes (not just for Thunderbolt Fantasy, but also Pili, KimKong a.k.a. Jin Guang, Samadhi Tang, and more), plus other activities/features like a cosplay runway, a display corner for those who own replica puppets, and puppeteering demonstrations by fans.

If any of you Thunderbolt Fantasy fans will be in Tokyo during that time, or if you've been planning a trip to Japan, we hope to see you there! Just be respectful and keep in mind that the culture/ rules/ practices may differ from artists' alleys and conventions in your own country.

Why "Across the Sea"?

Our fanzine's title, "Across the Sea", is a meaningful one for us, as it references multiple things: 👉 Thunderbolt Fantasy & this zine both being cross-border projects 👉 A line from "Voyage", The Finale's theme song 👉 A reference to The Finale's ending 👉 The hope for a reunion/new journey for the TBF project as conveyed in "Voyage" & The Finale

The Japanese translation of our zine's title is 彼方の海へと (Kanata no Umi e to)—the lyric from "Voyage" we referenced, meaning "toward the sea on the other side."

Meanwhile, the Mandarin title is 四海遨遊 (Sì Hǎi Áo Yóu), meaning "journey across the four seas."

It's also part of a longer proverb that means that people from all corners of the world are friends, referencing this zine's (& TBF's) collaborative nature!
