From the script notes: “I didn’t do this to be cruel to Damien or to say anything about people’s capacity to change. Things end up this way because that’s what happens when someone only budges when they have literally no other choice. It wouldn’t occur to Damien to give Mark all the power, to ask Mark to tell him what to do, until the threat of Mark leaving forever felt real. Ultimately, I think Mark is the one person who could have helped Damien change — the one person Damien might actually have changed for — but that isn’t Mark’s responsibility. It is not Mark’s job to redeem his own abuser.”
