The Principle Characteristics of Serial Murder:
1. As the FBI definition indicates, the killings are repetitive; and they will usually continue until the perpetrator is identified and apprehended, dies or is killed.
2. In many cases, the period between attacks decreases over time. The accepted explanation for this is that the killer derives great excitement (almost certainly sexual) from the first incident - and the thrill can lie as much in the hunt for a victim, as in the final acts. He (almost always a male) may take a ‘trophy’ - a purse, jewellery, clothing, or even a body part - from his victim, with which he subsequently relives that excitement in privacy. In due course, this activity palls, and another victim must be found. Each time, the post-killing excitement recedes ever more rapidly.
3. Serial killing, like other forms of homicide, is usually one-on-one. Occasionally, two killers may collaborate. When these are man and woman, the French coined the expression folie à deux. The cases of the ‘Hillside Stranglers’, Kenneth Bianchi and Angelo Buono, and that of Leonard Lake and Charles Ng, are unusual in that they involved two killers of the same sex. Group killings, such as those carried out by Charles Manson’s ‘family’, usually claim some kind of 'political’ motive, however bizarre.
4. During the course of the murder, or in its aftermath, there is a high degree of disproportionate violence - brutal rape of the most obscene kind, extensive mutilation and even necrophilia.
5. The first evidence that seemingly unrelated murders are serial is the distinguishable pattern of behaviour exhibited by the perpetrator and the absence of any apparent motive, other than the desire to kill.
6. During the course of the twentieth century, the increased mobility afforded by the ownership or use of a car has made serial killing much easier - and more difficult to identify and investigate.

Types of Motives for serial Killers
Visionary- These serial killers suffer breaks from reality sometimes thinking a god or devil is compelling them to kill .David Berkowitz, “The Son of Sam” Killer is an example of this.
Mission Oriented- These killers believe their acts are helping to rid the world of something evil or unwanted. Some see themselves as curing society. A killer example of this would be Ted Kacynski, the unabomber.
Hedonistic- This killer seeks a thrill or a rush from killing. Killing for them is like a drug it sends them on a high they never want to come down from. There are three sub types of hedonistic killers; “comfort”, “thrill” , and “lust”
Lust- These are the most common type of serial killers. Killers that are motivated by sex and fulfilling their fantasy. It doesn’t matter if they body is living or not all that matter is that they get to relive their fantasy over and over again. Serial Killer Ted Bundy would be an example of this type of killer.
Power/ control- These killers kill in order to feel a sense of power or control they don;t have in their everyday lives. The act of taking someone’s life gives them that control they crave. Ted Bundy is also an example of this as he traveled the United States looking for women to control.
Media- Media killers are driven by publicity. They thrive on other knowing what they have done and seeing everyone’s reactions to their heinous deeds. They seek attention for their deeds and will continue to kill until that need for attention is fulfilled. The BTK killer is a killer who sought media attention for his crimes.

“Hell awaits you […] your day will come”
These threats were written down in an anonymous letter sent to 19-year-old Loanne Rodrigues da Silva Costa. Days before, she had been severely beaten in the head and had to be hospitalized – the person who wrote the letter would only be recognized about ten months later. He was found to be her stepfather, 47-year-old Joaquim Lourenço da Luz, a person whom she was very close with. However, at that point, they were both already dead. Joaquim Lourenço married Sandra Rodrigues, mother of two, and soon became close to her 9-year-old daughter, Loanne. He also had two children, but his love for that little girl developed in a way that he felt neither for her brother or for his biological children. He had been on her side in every moment, from her childhood to her adulthood. However, eventually Joaquim began acting extremely jealous over her and his obsession would ruin her relationship with others - and that was exactly his intention. He wanted Loanne just for him.
At the age of 18, she got into Nursing school in order to achieve her dream to save lives. She would often go to parties with her friends, although Joaquim would stay up all night phoning her. Sandra thought he was just overprotective, but it was more than that. His morbid jealousy would lead him to plan his stepdaughter’s death.
In April 2013, Loanne was brutally beaten in the head as she was coming home from a party. She was taken by surprise and didn’t see her aggressor, but the fact her dogs didn’t bark made her realize that he was someone familiar. A few minutes later, Joaquim reached Loanne and provided help. In the letter she received while she was in recovery, Joaquim was mentioned. “This time, your damn stepdad won’t be around”.
On December 16, 2013, Loanne and Joaquim agreed to go to Frota Hill, a tourist attraction with a privileged view of the city Pirenópolis, in Goiás, where they lived. Sandra gave them a ride and the two walked together to the top. Loanne didn’t know, but she was walking towards her death. There, she was allegedly drugged with Clonazepam and was tied to a tree; Joaquim also tied himself to Loanne with a chain. Around 1 hour after they had arrived at the hill, both died in a dynamite explosion. The body of Loanne was found under Joaquim’s corpse the next day. He had planned the murder-suicide for at least two months and invited Loanne to go with him to the hill only to put his fatal plan into action. In February 2014, an analysis revealed that Joaquim was the writer of the threatening letter.

The Dissapearance of Asha Degree
On February 14, 2000, 9-year-old Asha Degree packed her backpack, left home and began walking along North Carolina Highway 18 in Shelby, NC.
On the night of the 14th, Asha's father, Harold, arrived home around 12:30 AM where he found Asha and her brother asleep in their beds. Later, around 3 AM, Asha's brother (who shared her room) heard her get up and, later, heard her bed squeak assuming this was her getting back into bed. He then went back to sleep.
The next morning, Asha's mother, Iquilla, went to wake the kids around 6:30 AM and found Asha's bed empty. After searching the house, they called Asha's relatives who lived in the area, then the police.
Within minutes, police and search dogs arrived but Asha's scent couldn't be tracked. By noon, a search party had formed, complete with helicopters and infrared heat-detectors, but nothing was found. When Asha's bedroom was examined, they noticed her backpack was missing along with her house key, a Tweety Bird purse and some clothing.
According to witnesses, Asha was seen walking along the highway around 4 AM, only one block from her home. When one driver stopped to help her, she retreated into the woods and wasn't seen again.
On August 3, 2001, 26 miles away from where Asha was seen walking, a contractor dug up what was confirmed to be Asha's backpack wrapped in two black trash bags. The police examined the construction site and the only other item of note found was a pair of men's pants.
In February 2015, police announced that there may have been sightings of Asha entering a dark green 1970s Lincoln Continental Mark IV or Ford Thunderbird with rust along the wheel wells.
In 2018, two new clues surfaced, though police have refused to give context or information as to why they're relevant. The first clue is the Dr. Seuss book "McElligot's Pool" and the other, a New Kids on the Block t-shirt with a red collar. Police are asking anyone who may have had these items, or known anyone in the Shelby area who did, to contact them.
Asha's family still hosts an annual walk from their home to the location she was last seen, where a billboard now stands with Asha's photo.

Ted Bundy is probably the most well-recognised american serial killer. His killing spread throughout the united states for five years. Bundy confessed to 30 murders, but estimates of his actual murder count place it between 30 and 100.
Bundy eventually received a death penalty for later murders committed in Florida, namely the murders of co-eds at the Chi-Omega sorority house, and the killing of 12 year old Kimberly Ann Leach. In both his trials Bundy refused court appointed defence counsel and presented his own defence. During the Kimberly Leach trial he managed to get married to his partner at the time, Carol Ann Boone, while she was on the witness stand.
Bundy filed appeal after appeal from 1980 to 1989, and all were dismissed by appellate jurisdictions. Prior to his execution, Bundy attempted to gain time, or perhaps a commutation of the death sentence to life imprisonment, by offering to provide additional information regarding the murders. He provided vivid descriptions of the murders, the dump sites and his post-mortem behaviour with the corpses. Bundy admitted to decapitating many of his victims and keeping their heads. He would discard the heads after they became putrefied from decomposition. Bundy also discussed his sexual activity with the corpses.
After three stays of execution, Ted bundy was executed in the electric chair on the 24th of January, 1989

THE HAUNTING OF ROUGE’S HOLLOW

ALSO KNOWN AS OHIO’S SLEEPY HOLLOW…
Rouge’s Hollow is a supposed ghost town located in Doylestown, Wayne county. Like helltown, it hosts a number of ghost stories and legends.
THE HEADLESS HORSE
In the 1800s, there was an accident near rouge’s hollow resulting in the decapitation of a horse. The horse can still be seen in the streets, wandering around without it’s head.
THE DEVIL’S TREE
Long ago a man saw a demon like creature standing on top of a tree by the road. The creature had glowing red eyes and crawled in and out of the tree. People report to have their cars break down here.
THE MILL
Now a museum, the ghost of a worker who died at this mill can still be seen here in the evening.
THE TWINS
A pair of identical ghosts have been seen traveling through rouge’s hollow, not much is known about them.
THE WORKERS
several mines operated near rouge’s hollow. The ghost of the miners can still be seen wandering the area sometimes.
CRYBABY BRIDGE (pictured above)
Here a woman murdered her child after a falling out with it’s father. Unlike other stories, you don’t have to honk your horn 3 times or call out the woman’s name to summon the ghosts, they will come to you. The woman will sometimes appear on the bridge at night, the child’s wails can be heard if you are near or on the bridge.

On a cold December night in 1976, seventeen-year-old Gregory Godzik vanished without a trace. He was last seen dropping off a girl after their much-anticipated date. Days went by without a single word from Greg. Soon, Christmas passed as well, and his parents, heartbroken and worried, moved his unwrapped gifts to a closet. There, they remained for three years while the Godzik family waited to answers.
Two years later, while searching the home of serial killer John Wayne Gacy, investigators uncovered Greg’s wallet. They believed the teenager’s body was one of the twenty-six bodies hidden in the crawl space. In total, Gacy killed thirty-three boys and young men, their ages ranging between fourteen and twenty-seven. Greg’s remains were matched with dental charts in January 1979, and once again identified by DNA provided by family years later in 2011.
Normal life never resumed for the Godzik family. John and Eugenia Godzik braved the murder trial together. The horrendous details of the young boys’ sufferings shook them to their core. Their oldest child, Eugenia, named after her mother, said her parents never recovered and attributed the stress and horror of her brother’s murder to their deaths. John Godzik passed away in 1984, and his wife died five years later in 1989 after succumbing to breast and liver cancer.
Now the sole living member of the family, Eugenia Godzik faced Gacy’s demise alone. She gathered with other victims’ relatives in the prison’s basement during Gacy’s execution on May 10th, 1994. Together, they sat huddled in the basement, where they anxiously watched updates on a television set.
″I’m glad he’s gone, but it’s never really over,“ Eugenia said when asked about Gacy’s death. "I don’t have anybody left. My brother is gone, and the whole incident really is what killed my parents.″
Although her little brother is gone, Greg is never far from her mind. Eugenia remembers as a typical teenage boy, one with a heart of gold and many dreams for his future. Greg greatly adored animals. Throughout his childhood, he had multiple pets, some of which were strays he took in from the streets. He enjoyed manual labor and the satisfaction of completing a difficult job. His most prized possession was a beat-up 1966 Pontiac. He spent hours working on it and much of the money he earned went to buying parts for it. Above all, Eugenia remembers him as an incredibly caring and sentimental boy, one who never left the house without kissing his mother goodbye. In her heart and in her mind, that is forever who Greg will be.

A BRIEF LOOK INTO THE CONSTRUCTS OF PSYCHOPATHY:
[Disclaimer: I am not a licensed mental health figure. All of this information was gathered from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual and other research material regarding the constructs of psychopathy. Please do not attempt to diagnose yourself after reading this.]
Psychopathy is akin to “antisocial personality disorder,” which is in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM). It is also allied to the catalog of Cluster B personality disorders: antisocial, narcissistic, and to a subsidiary level it is linked with borderline and histrionic personality disorders. Antisocial personality disorder is often determined by behaviors, and psychopathy is partially determined by behaviors but it also has an interpersonal factor. Most people who have psychopathy would qualify for ASPD, but only some with ASPD would qualify for having psychopathy.
The term “primary psychopathy” can often times be synonymous with the term psychopathy or the “classical/true” psychopath. When other researchers use the term psychopathy, they’re truly stating it as primary psychopathy. The other side of this spectrum is “secondary psychopathy.” Secondary psychopathy is occasionally referred to as “sociopathy,” which is a term that’s not commonly applied in research literature nowadays, however it’s strongly in line with the construct of secondary psychopathy.
When looking at primary psychopathy you can see a certain set of characteristics associated with the condition:
- superficial charm
- unemotional
- callous
- grandiose
- pathological lying
- manipulating
- calculating
- lack of fear, remorse, guilt, empathy, and anxiety
With primary psychopathy, it has an etiology that is a genetic development more so than it is an environmental development. Psychopathy also has a strong association with antisocial personality disorder and narcissistic personality disorder. Primary psychopaths amount up to about 1% of the population, and although not every single psychopath display violence they are more susceptible to commit violence. Traumatic brain injuries can also root a psychopathic behavior structure, but this is not an official cause. When it comes to secondary psychopathy, there is a different set of characteristics. At times secondary psychopathy is referred to by the term “antisocial deviance.” It is more in line with criminal behavior more so than primary psychopathy is.
Secondary psychopathy personality traits are far different than primary psychopathy traits. With secondary psychopaths they display:
- rash behavior
- impulsivity
- anxiousness
- hostility
- aggressiveness
- volatility
- self-destructive behavior
- risky decision-making
Unlike primary psychopaths, secondary psychopaths tend to be more disorganized. Secondary psychopaths also have the capability to experience fear and remorse, but experiencing those emotions is ultimately related to emotional dysregulation (difficulty managing emotions). In terms with the etiology of secondary psychopaths, it’s based more in environmental experiences. To put it simply, primary psychopaths were born the way they are and individuals with secondary psychopathy developed their characteristics from environmental stressors. Secondary psychopathy has a strong tie with antisocial personality disorder and narcissistic personality disorder, however the key that divides it from primary psychopathy is that secondary psychopaths are more at risk to fit into the criteria of borderline personality disorder.
When discussing the area of empathy between these two types of characteristics, there are two sections where they both fall in line with and differ from each other. These two sections are called cognitive empathy and affective empathy (emotional empathy).
COGNITIVE EMPATHY: The ability to understand emotions
Primary psychopaths and secondary psychopaths both fall in line with be able to understand another individual’s emotions.
AFFECTIVE EMPATHY: The ability to feel another’s emotions
For primary psychopaths, there are two theories regarding their range of this type of empathy.
[First theory: They generally have a lack of ability to feel emotions to begin with, therefore their affective empathy is compromised.]
[Second theory: The ability can exist, however they have zero concern regarding how a person feels.]
For secondary psychopaths, they are able to feel empathy for other people yet emotional dysregulation interferes with their usage of that ability, and they demonstrate emotions of their own by hostility and aggression.
It’s important to discuss the constructs of psychopathy in order to gain a true understanding of the condition. Many people often look to Shane Dawson’s video on the subject of antisocial personality disorder, which is unfortunately only stigmatizing the condition further. But despite the many years of research invested into dissecting the science behind what creates a psychopath, the issue is that it is still a highly mysterious condition deeply rooted into the psychology, social conditions, and biochemistry of those who have it.

The Witch of Yazoo
In Yazoo, Mississippi there's a strange legend which may have more truth to it than skeptics would like to believe.
According to legend, an old witch lived on the banks of the Yazoo River where she lured fishermen into her hut, tortured and killed them. When word finally got around to law enforcement, the sheriff came looking for the men and the witch fled.
By the time the witch was tracked down, she was found stuck in a pit of quicksand. As she slowly sank, she put a curse on the town of Yazoo stating that she would be back in 20 years to burn to the town to the ground. This happened on May 25, 1884.
The witch was later buried, with a chain placed around her gravestone to keep her from escaping. However, on May 25, 1904, the town of Yazoo caught fire. A news article states that the fire started around 8:30 AM and burned until 5 PM, destroying a total of 200 houses and 36 city blocks estimated at $2,000,000 (about $56,000,000 in today's money) worth of damage. One man was killed in the fire and another, Mayor Holmes, was badly injured.
While stories vary about how the fire actually started, with some saying it was a young boy playing with matches and others saying it was an electrical mishap, the true source of the fire remains unknown.
After the fire was extinguished, the witch's grave was visited and the chain around the grave had been broken. Today, the Glenwood Cemetery can be toured where the witch's headstone still lies, encircled in chains.
