❛ i can't . ❜ niamh sighed , hands fidgeting with a small piece of rope she'd torn from the hem of one of the capitol provided outfits . johanna was always so mad that seven was dressed as trees , and niamh had always wanted to say that district four always had some kind of rope . maybe that's all they were here , rope and the smell of fish . her fingers knotted and unknotted the rope , weaving it between her fingers before knotting it again while her eyes looked to the capitol below .

glittering lights , fireworks , muffled cheers . this would be a happy hunger games indeed , she thought bitterly . she turned her attention briefly towards annie , and after a breath shifted on her bed and patted a spot next to her . she wasn't much older than annie , but she saw a lot of her shea in the quiet woman . it was hard to put away those motherly feelings , hard to hear annie's voice without thinking of her little girl back home . she'd been a little more blunt with annie because of this , cold . . . but it was all to protect her .

that was finnick's part of the deal shea and jonah would be safe , annie would be safe . niamh didn't really believe in the whole keeping annie out of it thing , the girl didn't need to be coddled after all , but she wasn't going to argue with her district partner when the stakes were so high . she looked down to the gold bracelet around her wrist , provided by haymitch who insisted katniss wouldn't immediately put an arrow through niamh's chest if she saw it . she hoped katniss found finnick first , he was better at convincing than niamh was .
